For the record, the creature doesn't directly effect them. It doesn't cause the fear. The repeating does take something away from the doctors usual calming effect but there's no telepathic ability causing fear. The cause of this is plain and simple human fear due to the situation. It is a good episode in that regard, trying to show this aspect of human nature.

For me, this beats blink in terms of creepiness. And I am happy that we have never found out what the monster/entity was, which makes it even more scary.
@IG7799-c4u
@IG7799-c4u 5 лет назад
To further elaborate, I feel that the weeping angels diminished in scariness with each appearance. For me, the biggest turn off for me was them showing one of them moving on screen. Since before that scene, we didn't know how they moved or how they looked when un-observed. But them just looking the same as when they are observed makes no sense.
@jalexation4579
@jalexation4579 5 лет назад
@@IG7799-c4u Exactly! It was stated in Blink that a Weeping Angel only becomes stone when it is observed, therefore it is not actually made of stone. That scene when the angel moves (plus the whole situation with Amy "walking like she could see") was so stupid.

@LabradorIndependent
@LabradorIndependent 5 лет назад
@@IG7799-c4u Indeed, the whole point is that they're quantum locked when being observed, which should mean that even if they don't realise someone's not looking at them, the fact that they are not being observed should mean they're not quantum locked, and therefore should be able to move at full speed. The slow head tilts and uncertainty over whether Amy could see was stupid, and contradictory to something that made the angels really cool.

09:56 Anyone ever noticed that when the Doctor knocked 4 times, the thing outside only knocked back 3 times, like, as if it were aware that the "4 knocks" were already booked by someone else, somewhere, sometime, but not this day. Btw, it's funny you asked for Dona to have an emotinal break in the previous reaction, and in this episode she spends the whole time relaxing in a luxury space SPA. What a coincidence !!!

I think that this is the only time where the doctor genuinely lost, without a plan or without reliable backup. The only people who could save him were the same ones that wanted to throw him out, he survived purely by chance here
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
The only other instance I can think of is the audios. There's a story that's part of a collection of 4 half hour episodes. It's framed via narration of one of the characters in the story, so you think that means they'll have to be safe. But then when it gets to the end, it's revealed that all along the creature was tricking the doctor, and the character narrating the story is actually the creature having now fully possessed the character who you thought was narrating the story, and the doctor has already left in the tardis. The character in question will now be forced to spend eternity still alive and thinking but unable to do anything as the creature now has full control of them. It's a really cool amd creepy story, but midnight works better imo as while the twist that the doctor lost is incredible, midnight is much more personal to the doctor.

Midnight is my most favourite episode in the whole of new who - it puts the Doctor in a place of confusion and with all his intelligence he had no idea how to handle the situation, he had no idea what "it" was and we still don't know.

Being a Wannabe horror writer I love watching Blink & Midnight. Midnight is very clever because The Entity only had to cause a little bit of Fear to turn up the tension but it was enough make the group afraid so the tension escalates and the group carry the conflict that's when it starts rebounding between the two until the end.
@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures
@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures 5 лет назад
Aw, man! This is one of my all time-favourites! I'd put it easily in the top ten. Classic Twilight Zone stuff. The Doctor has always won through on persuading others to do the right thing and employing words and ideas to win the day. In Midnight he's a man who knows nothing about the threat that faces him, has terrified companions he's never met before who are ready to distrust anyone who imposes upon them and is robbed even of his power to communicate - the method he almost always uses to win the day. This is an episode where the Doctor doesn't even win the day - somebody else figures it out, and we never find out her name. Unlike with the Doctor, the poor lady is never even asked what her name is. Low budget in the traditional episode ten way of Nu-Who, this is just spell-binding through the tension generated by the fraught acting, pressure-cooker scenario and the threat being unlike anything else he's ever face before. I also admire the way it strips away as many future trappings as it can (the passengers dress like us, speak like us, live like us) so there are no barriers to our placing ourselves in their shoes. I only wish it were ten minutes longer for pacing reasons - other than that, great stuff. And the next episode is one of my favourites too! Man, what a rush Season 4 is!
@JoshuaHillmanatorHillman

I think one of the most interesting things about this episode is the characters of Jethro and DeeDee. Both of them face constant criticism from the major authority figures in their lives, and react to it in completely different ways. Jethro slowly has his independence and free thought crushed by his parents, through means of harsh criticism and fear, until at the end, even though he clearly doesn't think it is the right thing to do, and is struggling with it, he bends to his parents will, and helps to throw the doctor out. Deedee on the other hand starts of thinking very limitedly, but over the course of the episode, changes and becomes more independent from Professor Hobbes. However, even with her newfound independence, she doesn't have the strength to oppose him in throwing out the Doctor, so just stands and reacts. I feel like Jethro and Deedee were both trying to be decent people, and were placed in an awful situation, who chose to comply with the authorities rather than make a stand. “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.” - John Stewart Mill

If your reference was to the fact that _Patrick_ Troughton played Salamander, then it really is a stupidly, blatantly obvious thing to point out, given that it was a story specifically revolving around a guy who looks exactly like the Doctor. Did it really need saying? In other news, grass is green. :-)

Terrifying fun fact: when the engineer thinks he can see the shadow, you actually see it, when it pans to their heads looking out while the alarms are on look slightly to the right of the guy on the lefts head and you’ll see a shadow jump down.
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
I'm not convinced of that. I've seen multiple vids of people supposedly pointing it out and I don't see it. Maybe it's there, but it seems equally likely that people want to see it and so they convince themselves that something is there.

This is the only episode where we see the Doctor lose, being completely and utterly defeated - he was only saved by the Hostess's sacrifice. RTD said he wrote this to counterbalance Voyage of the Damned - there, people were heroes all working for the common good; here, they're human, fallible and flawed. They took an extra day for rehearsal; it must have been intense, confined to one set for all but the start and end, with lights, techs, cameras and operators all crammed in there.

This is such a fantastic episode because the Doctor utterly loses. His intellect, knowledge, and rationality - the resources he would typically use to win in a situation - are all of no use. If it wasn't for the Hostess, he would be dead and that lifeform would've escaped. That's the brilliance of this episode, sheer human paranoia defeats The Doctor, and damn near gets him killed.

also, the fact that he doesn't have his companion here is notable, bc when he gets too hubristic, his companion usually humanizes him and can connect with the other people in a way the doctor fails to. but he doesn't have that this time.

Yes, that's the beauty of the episode and also the fact that usually, in any situation, he can easily take control but because of all of his wisdom and everything he says but because in this instance it is repeated and almost mimicked/mocked by the creature, his words have no effect and he finally realises what humans are capable of when they panic. Humans make bad and rash decisions when scared and at the end of the episode when the Doctor is released, he is truly disgusted. The human race, people he has protected for centuries and holds above everyone else were about to kill him in the blink of an eye. That's why this is a great episode.

i actually i think he knew as soon it predicted the voice. I believe it was a tardis they translate and need a time lord also they are known to control time lords as well. Doctor picked up it needed to learn, copy then control but as you see the tardis blew up and time lords can die so the tardis outer layer destroyed and their inner dimensions were left.

Not sure it would really have kileld him though, I mean sure it would have killed 10 but then a timelord fresh of regeneration would likely have been able to make it back to base camp.

You know it’s bad when the doctor gets ptsd from it, he wouldn’t even let Donna repeat him 😔 it pains me to see the doctor so scared.

I always loved how this episode was always heavy on psychology, human behaviour. Their reaction to high stress, the way they turned on one another so easily; it was all so deliciously cruel. I think each of their behaviours is representative of something, but I can't exactly remember what.

Anna Foxglove Sadly, that’s probably what a lot of people would do under stress. One of the first things we skip is to remain calm, even in a dangerous scenario. Obviously, who wouldn’t be scared, that’s natural, but we all tend to confuse remaining calm with doing nothing. Remain calm, acknowledge the danger, and think very hard before taking action.

Season 4 episode 8-11 is such a great little set of episodes. Consequently episode 10 is usually the episode I tell people to watch if they wanna start their hook with Dr.Who. It’s got a great setup and plot - and more Doctor in it than ‘Blink’.

midnight is even better in context, bc you realize that the doctor's usual methods of winning people over not only don't work, but turn the people against him instead.

Midnight is absolutely one of the best episodes of Who. Incredibly scary, and definitely a moral commentary too.

this episode spooked me when it first aired; it was the fact that we never actually found out what it was, the unknown is what makes this episode so eery and iconic to me

Let's give a round of applause to Lesley Sharp, who played Sky/???. What a good job she did of creeping us all out. She got to play the ultimate villain: The Unknown.
