A nice detail that you may not have noticed: little Amelia had a Scottish accent (she mentions moving from Scotland to England), then when we're introduced to Amy and she doesn't want the doctor to know who she is, she puts on an English accent. When she shouts 'WHY DID YOU SAY 5 MINUTES?', She goes back into her Scottish accent
It’s a miracle that this episode is so great. Think of everything it has to do: New Doctor New companion New TARDIS No returning actors New showrunner And following the most popular Doctor’s emotional send off And they NAILED IT. Smith is gangbusters from the start, he and Gillian have fantastic chemistry, the score is lovely, the cinematography is downright magical to behold, and nothing feels off. It’s insane how much pressure they had to be feeling, and it turned out brilliantly.
@@MegaHypeHD No, the only other seasons that went through that are season 1 and season 11. Season 5 definitely started out stronger than season 11 did.
Like, they literally hadn't had to do that combination of obstacles since "Spearhead in Space" in 1970... okay yeah technically there was a "returning showrunner," but that was Derrick Sherwin who was showrunner for ONLY two stories ("The War Games" and "Spearhead from Space") to handle the hand-off from Troughton to Pertwee, before immediately handing the reigns over to Barry Letts.
Y'know, you cut it from this video, but one of 11's most defining moments came right in the first few minutes of this episodes, and lots of people seem to miss the significance; _Amelia: I’m not scared._ _The Doctor: ‘Course you’re not! You’re not afraid of anything. Box falls out of the sky, man falls out of the box, man eats fish custard. And look at you, just sitting there. So you know what I think._ _Amelia: What?_ _The Doctor: Must be a hell of a scary crack in your wall._ That let us know right from the start that there would be a method to his madness. I was really impressed with that scene when I first saw it.
@@abnormallynormal4614 Yeah I know hmmm it’s a very interesting way to spell Eccleston but ok and there is no Caps but fine I guess still very strange! 😂😂🤔
11 can be a bit of a dork but also a totall badass, I love it! Matt Smith did a brilliant job following DT, he got the balance just right, he totally nailed it in the first episode
Becuase when you think of it everything that happened in the last episode of 10 literally JUST happened with 11, he didnt get the massive time jump and then the entire emelia growing up timeline he literally had 10s last episode regenerated crashed into amelias backyard and then this happened.
@@benwhiteley7818 It's like that gag DBZ Abridged did where Goku didn't realize his hair turned blonde when he turns Super Saiyan, because he hasn't seen himself in a mirror since he escaped Namek.
I forgot how much I loved this episode. I also forgot how soon they started hinting at ‘silence will fall’. I love how bouncy Matt Smith is, and it doesnt really go away as far as I can remember. This is making me want to do a re-watch of his era. Good to see you back fail whale, missed seeing your videos last week.
David Tenant is Scottish, but so is Stephen Moffat, new show-runner and writer of this episode. So when the Doctor says, "You're Scottish, fry something" that is Scottish humour at ourselves.
I Exist and Christmas Invasion is great, and Rose. Actually ya know what let’s say that there all great because they’re, even Woman a Who Fell to Earth was great and I’m not a fan of her era so far, yet that was admittedly great. However, personally, Eleventh Hour was the even greater out of the greats.
What it dooski everyone! The Eleventh Hour is upon us :) Love to hear what you think/ My bad i've been MIA, took sometime off videos and social media and improved the channel behind the scenes and set up. Looking forward to the rest of Who with you all!
The mystery of what the "silence" is what why it's called that goes all though the Matt Smith run and is only revealed in his last episode. That's some planning ahead!
Great reaction. I think your reaction was typical of most Whovians when there is a new doctor. There tends to be a "wait and see" attitude in the beginning, because of fondness for the previous doctor. It was fun to see you warm up to him as the episode progressed - I have watched other reactions to this episode and they were quite similar.
one of the best parts of this is the little girl playing Young Amy is actually Karen Gillian's cousin (who she hadn't met till they filmed together) and Karen actually took some character ques from how her cousin played young Amy
Back at the time where they were in seasons 1-4 I was an occasional viewer of the show just because it reminded me of my childhood. When I watched this episode's line "I'm The Doctor. Basically, run!" I was hooked! By the end of Matt Smith's run, I wouldn't miss an episode. If you enjoy this type of writing with multi-episode story arcs, you are going to love Moffat's time as show runner.
@@failwhale34 If you're doing vintage Who, Genesis of the Daleks is a must-see, if you haven't got to it already. Like, if there is one old series episode you watch, it should be that one.
Smith became my 2nd favourite Doctor from the very first episode. After Tennant's regeneration, I wasn't happy to see Smith take over and his cameo didn't impress me at all. However, from the first minute of the Eleventh Hour episode to the last minute, I had a complete 180 on Smith. I recognise that nobody will ever replace Tennant as my favourite Docto, but Smith's version is unique, different and a joy to watch.
You sumed it up perfectly : it's all new but it feels familiar too. I felt it with every new Doctor, except the last one, in my opinion, i'm still waiting for the moment i'll tell to myself " now THIS is the Doctor " ...
This role was Karen Gillian’s big break and put her on the road to stardom. Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor is my favorite era of new Who. He was born to be the doctor, rich with a serialized story arc which I hope you’ll enjoy as I have on many occasions.
A piece of advice for you. Go to RU-vid search for I Am the Doctor by Murray gold. Listen to it and then remember that every time you hear it from here on you can be confident that something amazing is about to happen.
I didn't realize it was pre-edited what you were watching, so I thought you were the one who added in "failwhale" and you were laughing at Karen Gillan's name which left me confused for a moment
Funny thing is the way this season started with all the doctor and Amy dolls leading up to the wedding dress...with just that we thought "uh oh doctor, guess who made an impression?" Then Rory came out of left field and we never saw it coming! Moreso Rory the Roman!
@@MrMaster7112765 It would have been better to say that, then. But it still doesn't make sense in reference to HD when the video *is* in HD. Just because it doesn't go to 1080p doesn't stop it being HD, so the comment literally makes no sense.
@@weescotspaul I never said the video wasn't in HD. I only said that he mentioned using a new camera so the quality should be better when in fact it was lower than the original camera.
Don't know if you knew this but this is the first episode of a new show runner who called Steven Moffat that's why it feels so different. Steven Moffat is the guy that wrote the 9th doctors 2 part the doctor dances and the empty child he also wrote blink for 10th doctor the weeping angles one and I am sure he has written many other episodes I just can't think of any more from 10 AND 9 era.
Really hope you like 11. It took me until the final episode of series 5 for him to become The Doctor for me. Once that happened, I loved him and couldn't wait for the next series.
young Amelia and old Amelia are cousins in real life ( yes Karen and the young actress are cousins ) im re watching all your videos for the 3rd time now ;)
The show was in hd in the post series 4 specials aswell.. It was just uhh.. S5 increased the sharpness filter ny like 50% sl they could go "look at how crisp and detailed we are" even though it kinda fucks with the Cinimatography
People are going to give their opinions and as always they should be ignored. What I will state is please remember to enjoy the ride, you only get one chance to see this for the first time and envy will drive people to try and help steer this one way or another. Feel the way you feel, enjoy the things you enjoy and remember as always "do you". Geronimo!!!!!!!
I have a really hard time choosing between David Tennant and Matt Smith as my favorite Doctor, so I just tie them. They are both incredible, but in different ways.
At 28:52 I hate that part since he says oh look a new one "a sonic" since his fried earlier in the episode but we know that can't be a new one it has to be the same one just rebuilt since he gave it to river in the future at the singing towers episeode he copied her so that in his past in the library episode could save her n he confirmed it in the episode that that was the same Sonic so idk lol
Gmail com there’s always someone complaining about Moffat in every single comment. Can’t there be atleast 1 comment on RU-vid about Steven Moffat without someone putting some negativity like that. Appreciate Moffat.
Welcome to the Moffat era - a man whose plot construction (unlike RTD's generally full-ahead style of storytelling) can best be described as 'interesting'. You'll enjoy Matt Smith, though. One of those actors who put the 'alien' into the Doctor.
