So this video has been stressful haha. This is an edited version of my original "Day of the Doctor" reaction. I posted a two-part video on Monday and then on Thursday my (Part 1) got claimed. I filed a dispute but as of right now no answer has come back. So with the help of Sesskasays, I decided to release a new version of this reaction for everyone to see. Hopefully, this doesn't get taken down. I am going to put my (Part 2) on private just because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have two videos of the same reaction on my channel. Hopefully, you all will watch this again and comment, I'd love to reply to the comments I missed in the previous two parts.

The Moment looked up and down the Doctor's timeline to find the face that he needed to see most during his darkest time and The Moment chose Rose's.

The mini-episode The Night of the Doctor was important both in giving the Eight Doctor a regeneration but also in establishing just how long the Time War had waged. In the climax of Night of the Doctor, John Hurt is seen as a young man, here he is old. Knowing how slowly Time Lords age this gives some scale to the conflict between the Daleks and Time Lords. Of course the Daleks are accustomed to long wars; back in Classic Who they were in a centuries long conflict with the android race, the Movellans (who will fleetingly return again many years later). John Hurt gave a wonderful performance and, considering this was not the first option explored, it was probably the best outcome. If the original storyline had been pursued with Ecclestone in the central Time War role this would have introduced major continuity issues as in the opening episode of the revived series (Rose) it was obvious that the Doctor was newly regenerated. The assumption at that time was that McGann (8) had fought in the Time War and regenerated off screen. When it became clear that Ecclestone had no interest in reprising the role McGann was reportedly thought not to be a big enough name to appear in the special so, having secured Hurt, the scripts were written to include the previously unknown War Doctor. While I think it worked out for the best, McGann's performance in The Night of the Doctor suggests to me that he was well capable of carrying the story and it is a pity that we will never see him back in the role on-screen.I do know, before anyone comments, that he has appeared in many Big Finish audio adventures and, indeed, the mini-episode brought those stories into canon by acknowledging companions that appeared *only* in the audio stories. As an old-time fan who started as a young child back with Hartnell, this was a fitting tribute to the 50th anniversary. Although the Classic era was sidelined by the Time War based story, it was at least given some acknowledgement in the climax and in the mini-episode both of which served to tie together the two strands of Who.

Paul Morris - Tom Baker was my first Doctor, as well. I agree with you that John Hurt was perfectly cast for the War Doctor. While I understand the reasons why Eccleson and McGann didn't reprise their roles, I honestly feel that this was life's way of making sure the story worked perfectly. I had a similar reaction to Shayla when I heard Tom's voice.... maybe even more emotional. His cameo was absolutely perfect, and everyone involved with this special did a fantastic job! This couldn't have been done any better, no matter who was and wasn't involved.

@@3sh16 Because 1-9 have ALREADY been the reigning versions of the Doctor in the past, their seasons are done and over and as you very well may know, some of the actors have literally passed away by now, so it wouldn't even make sense to try telling stories of how they got to the 50th in future episodes. But with 13 there would totally be a possibility and the way they teased him with that entrance even made it seem likely, that there would be more to tell about that in the future. Also by making Gallifrey lost by the Doctors' actions, they even set that plot thread up to be further explored with 13 then, so it would totally make sense to tell more about his involvement just for that anyway! I haven't seen anyone else fill in the behind the scenes on this - maybe nobody's interested, but I thought it was kinda cool. About a year after the 50th when some of the sizzle had died down, Steven Moffat started talking about the process of coming up with this story. Basically, the year leading up to the 50th anniversary was one of the most stressful of his life. CRAZY pressure was on him to deliver, from himself most of all. Nobody really doubted that he'd be able to do it, but he was crapping himself internally every time he would sit down to figure it out. He thought the Time War should be the fulcrum - what else would qualify as the most important event in the Doctor's life? - but that's all he had. Another thing that was going on was that he didn't actually have Matt Smith contracted to be in it - Matt had been signed for three years and that had just ended with the previous episode. Tennant was on board in theory, but he had said he didn't want to just be a punchline, there would have to be a good solid part for the Tenth Doctor in the thing, so again no pressure. Then there was Eccleston. The rough, tentative outline Moffat had for what became "Day of the Doctor" had Eccleston's Doctor basically doing what Hurt's Doctor does. Moffat gives Eccleston credit for at least taking the meeting, and he listened politely to what the story was maybe going to be, and said thank you but he didn't think it was for him. So at one point Moff had Clara (Jenna Coleman was still under contract) but no Doctors for the big 50th anniversary special. Moff spoke of one delirious, terrifying weekend where he was trying to figure out if he could swing some kind of crazy celebrity Doctor gag, where *insert amazing story idea* happens and all the Doctors would be played by people like... he didn't even know. Who could he get? Hugh Grant maybe? Billy Connolly, if he lost the accent? Rowan Atkinson's a fan, would he do it?? BBC would want someone young... Justin Bieber?!?! Moff said he was NOT an easy person to know around this time. Then he started thinking about the sixteen-ish years that the show was off the air. We had the one TV movie with Paul McGann, but imagining that the show had carried on and not been 'soft cancelled' we would have had a nice long run of episodes with Sylvester McCoy, then perhaps a nice long run with McGann, considering how well received his turn in the TV movie was. Given that, there still would have been room for one more full Doctor that the BBC's boneheaded actions cheated us out of. So what might that Doctor have been up to? Russell T. Davies had built in the mythology of the Time War, so there we go. Moffat thought, who in a perfect world would I cast as the Doctor who fought in the Time War? John Hurt. Wonder if he would do it? So they reached out to Hurt and Hurt has said he was inclined to turn it down since he didn't really know that much about it and it sounded like not the best thing to jump onto mid-stream like this but his wife happened to overhear the offer and told him under no uncertain terms that he damn' well better call them back and say, "Yes," right away. Moff said he had to give Eccleston even more credit because he's not sure his story would have worked nearly as well without the creation of the War Doctor. Not that it was easy sailing from there. I have to assume Moff did a little dance when he stumbled across that line about the Doctor possessing the Moment from "The End of Time" - and perhaps there were cartwheels when he came up with tying up the Elizabeth I dangling loose end. Although the anticipation was white hot leading up to the 50th, there was a LOT of dubious rumblings in the fandom. "John Hurt, all of a sudden? I mean, he's great and all, but whaaaaaaa.....??" Although we all knew that Tennant was gonna be in it, everyone in the cinema screening I saw pretty much flipped the feck out when the names came up in the beginning just like Shayla did and the show could do no wrong from that point. Not sure how true any of that is, but it makes a good story - Moff's good at those.

I love this story. So much work went into making it happen, like Tom Baker was driven to the studios at 4 o'clock in the morning to absolutely make sure no one would see him go in and spoil his involvement in the episode, the addition of Peter Capaldi adds a nice little hint to the future and, if you've read the novelization, Moffat does include Jodie Whittaker in the final chapter, which is a nice little addition that wasn't necessarily needed, but is nice to see nonetheless. Lastly, you may not have been aware of this, but an impressionist of William Hartnell was hired to record the line "Calling the War Council of Gallifrey, this is the Doctor" to make the Hartnell footage fit with the premise of the story.

My Favorite part that can easily be missed, is that when they're in the painting. and the Dalek attacks. THE FIRST one to react to the threat of the dalek behind them was the War Doctor. Even though the other two 'knew' or at least felt they remembered what happened, hence they turned quickly with Screwdrivers up and ready to attack. you note the War Doctor turned, but he had to SEE what it was before he started to raise his own screwdriver. so while he was the first to turn and react, he was the last to engage and attack because he had to make sure it wasn't an innocent, the other two from memory already knew. just a little good bit of timeline keeping. and then immedaitly after that as they climb out of the Painting. Clara somehow reverses her arm and wrist to climb out with two left hands. It's a bit weird lol.

This is one of the BEST moments in DW! I’m actually glad I have an excuse to watch your reaction again. This was such a perfect culmination of the decades-long history of the show. It would have been cool if Chris Eccleston had participated, but John Hurt’s performance was masterful. The way he portrayed the pain, loss and hollowness of his life, since he didn’t regard himself the Doctor anymore, was heart wrenching. Matt and David-delightful. Billie-a joy. Jenna-my impossible girl. 😍 This episode is a triumph. And I love that YOU loved it. 💙💙

If you think back to Martha's first episode "The Shakespeare Code" we now know why Queen Elizabeth in that episode hated the doctor so much why she called him her "sworn enemy" because the doctor ran out on her at their wedding and never came back. The Queen Elizabeth in this episode is the same one but older in "The Shakespeare Code"

Gallifrey wasn't in a pocket universe "until" the doctor did this. In End of Time he just sent gallifrey back to it's own destruction-- to the point where the doctor stood in the barn looking at the big red button.
@somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829
Gallifrey was in a pocket universe, even then. It was in the pocket Universe during 9 as well. This all happened before all of that happened......except the High Council which happened at the same time. Those were the plans that the General was talking about on the way to see if the vault had been compromised. When The Master and the Timelord High Council were sent back they came back "in time" to this moment

Watching this again I've noticed there are a few nice back-references in this episode to the "Classic Who" story "The Three Doctors".... The comment about 'redecorating' is a throw-back to Patrick Troughton's reaction to Jon Pertwee's TARDIS - which of course he didn't like! The comment about there being a precedent for multiple Doctors is also a nod to the same story as UNIT was heavily involved in that plot also. My favourite sly reference though is the code-name for UNIT's files being "Cromer" - as Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (Kate's father) was convinced that the alien terrain the TARDIS had landed on was the beach at Cromer!
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 5 лет назад
The Brigadier was in 'The Five Doctors' too, so even more precedent (there's also a call-back in that when the 2nd Doctor notes that the Brig has "redecorated" his office and says "I don't like it" so "redecorated/I don't like it" pretty much qualifies as a running gag by this point ;). And "Cromer" is a nice catch BTW, missed that.
@johna5635
@johna5635 5 лет назад
@@anonymes2884 Yes, but didn't all the companions in "The Five Doctors" (including The Brigadier) have their memories wiped of the events they'd just been through? If that was the case, UNIT presumably wouldn't have notes about THAT occasion! As for the "redecorated/I don't like it" line, I agree - it has become a far longer-running gag than even the references to The Doctor and Queen Elizabeth! Hopefully we'll have more mentions of Cromer in the future too!!!
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 5 лет назад
@@johna5635 As far as I remember there's nothing explicitly stated in 'The Five Doctors' to suggest that their memories are wiped (been a while though so I could be wrong) but it's not a crazy assumption in fairness so you may have a point. Certainly you'd have to assume the Doctors' memories at least become "fuzzy", otherwise the plot falls apart (because what 1 learns, they should all know), though this is contradicted by for instance 'Time Crash' and even parts of 'The Five Doctors' itself, then reaffirmed by 'Day of...' (thus demonstrating the utter non-sanctity of Who continuity ;). Whether it applies to the companions is debatable too I guess (they're not experiencing their own personal history out of order the way the Doctor does).
@johna5635
@johna5635 5 лет назад
@@anonymes2884 It's been a while since I watched "The Five Doctors" too so I can't remember if I'm remembering something actually stated in the episode - or just a theory I read afterwards - but I recall when Sarah Jane met the 10th Doctor this being used as an explanation of why she thought she hadn't seen him since the 4th Doctor dropped her off in Aberdeen - despite having spent a whole episode with the 3rd Doctor in between!
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 5 лет назад
@@johna5635 Think it might be more along the theory afterwards lines (although now i'm tempted to re-watch TFD to be sure ;). And yeah, you have to jump through a lot of mental hoops to avoid the idea in 'School Reunion' that Sarah apparently doesn't remember meeting him again after 4 dropped her off (I think you just about can do it if you see it as what she considers her final _formative_ experience with him but it's arguably a stretch). But then as I say, we also get evidence that he _does_ remember other times he meets himself (even when we're explicitly told he won't) so either way, some mental gymnastics are required.

13:46 I love the implication of this line. It implies that on David's end, this is happening during his farewell tour; as in, that trip to see the queen was one of his last stops before regenerating. In fact, there are people that theorize that this moment takes place just before he goes to see Rose Tyler on New Years Day 2005, as he would be inspired by the Bad Wolf mention at 11:05.
@rockysandman5489

That makes no sense because when he meets the Ood in the snowy landscape in End of Time Part 1, he already mentions that he, quote, "got married, that was a mistake. Good Queen Bess, and let me tell ya, her nick name is no longer... ahem." So logically, Day of the Doctor from Ten's perspective has to happen before End of Time Part 1, so not during the farewell tour. Also I don't think that he would've been able to hold his regeneration for that long.

I love how the story introduces its ideas; the Doctor is one person who wears many faces, then two very different people have Elizabeth’s face which creates some really fun comedy, then the Zygons have invaded the present so nobody is who they seem to be. Also the whole thing with the screwdrivers and Clara discovering the door isn’t locked is foreshadowing for the Moment not having actually been triggered yet; the door to that decision wasn’t locked, but the Doctor couldn’t see that when he only had himself to talk to.
