Doctor Who The End of Time: Part One Reaction

The Ood have given a warning to The Doctor. The Master is returning yet that is not the biggest threat. A darkness is coming which brings with it The End of Time.

The Master is just crazy. He may do evil things, but as his previous appearance showed, the Doctor holds him accountable, but he doesn't blame him because he understands he's deeply sick and needs help, whilst the Master just wants to torment his childhood bestie. That's probably the best way I can describe their relationship based on what you've already seen. I cheered and jumped around the room when I saw the Time Lord reveal, when it broadcast! Love your reactions btw Jules! 🙂

When Bernard Cribbins was cast as Wilfred Mott he was accidentally given the impression that he was going to travel in the Tardis during the series. When the writer realized he was going to bring back Wilfred for this episode he went out of his way to write a short Tardis hop into this story just so Bernard could finally have his moment. The Master's capacity to frantically find new ways to cling to life after dying and not regenerating has been around since the classic series and at this point is somewhere between hilarious and terrifying. This isn't the fist time he's revived as a starved skeletal horror, or the first time he's come back from not having a body at all, and the previous times were completely unrelated incidents to boot. He's just plain like that.

And I genuinely can't take him seriously in any other role since then. 😅🤭 He was so FANTASTIC as Simon Skinner. I only ever see that character. I even had to hold back a laugh (no joke) when I saw that scene at the end of this episode for the very first time. If you like Timothy Dalton and you have never seen Hot Fuzz, go check it out IMMEDIATELY. You owe that to yourself then. Certainly, the writing can also play a big part for it, in terms of how a role is perceived and such. But I think what he did and how he did it is the kind of work that deserves an Oscar. It was unique. Memorable. And VERY funny.... 😅🤭

And here we go Jules, this is a big one! You know, I still remember the hype surrounding the trailer for this (I think I saw a leaked version from Comic-Con), this two-parter was such an event. Even the title made it feel special. For Doctor Who's first few years, every episode had an individual title, but from the early Second Doctor era onwards, serials were given an overarching title with 'Part 1, 2, etc', which is my preference. However, this was the first time in New Who that they'd used the 'Part 1/Part 2' format. It was even more special for me because I got to watch it on the big screen. I finished high school in 2009 so my equivalent of Schoolies was to stay with a family friend in the Southern Highlands of NSW for a few weeks after Christmas. Now, back then we had to wait for months after the UK broadcast to get new Doctor Who episodes (it was ridiculous, it wasn't until Series 6 in 2011 that we started getting them at the same time as the UK), so that family friend... sailed the high seas to get this episode and part two. Then, since he volunteered at the local cinema, he organised a discreet little screening of both episodes for my family, himself and some of his friends down there (including the cinema manager, who was a massive Whovian). You can't imagine how much more epic it was seeing it on the big screen! What can be said about this episode, it's massive in scale, while still packing such a powerful emotional punch. It's true indeed that Wilf has always been beloved by the fandom, so we were thrilled to see him back. And that final reveal, that the Time Lords were returning... Maaaaannnnn, that is such an epic moment! Now for some titbits: The joke about the Doctor marrying Queen Elizabeth I was Russell T. Davies' way of explaining her hatred for the Doctor back in 'The Shakespeare Code'. As I mentioned in the previous episode, the space between this and 'Waters of Mars' would later be filled in by the massive 'Time Lord Victorious' event in 2020. I'm sure plenty of people have told you that that Time Lord at the end was played by Timothy Dalton, who, among many other roles, was a James Bond. Another prominent casting point however, is David Harewood, who played Joshua Nesmith. He's a British actor who would go on to prominence playing Hank Henshaw/J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter in the Supergirl TV show, and in other parts of the Arrowverse. He also appeared in a short-lived sitcom called 'Selfie' alongside an actress named Karen Gillan. Hmm... I've also had the pleasure of meeting him and he's a wonderful man. This was a brilliant reaction Jules, it's just a shame that nothing of note happens in part two. I'll still check it out, but I don't expect there to be any big moments for you to react to. 😉

I know that you've already watched _The Eleventh Doctor_ , so this might be just a bit late, but...... Now that you've reached the end of the David Tennant/RTD Era, there are some wonderful videos you could watch (or even better: react to!), to process the Regeneration a bit maybe. One is simply called "David Tennant's Wrap Party" (or "David Tennant's Wrap Party - 500 Miles"). The other is "The Ballad of Russell and Julie". The Wrap Party was made to honour all the cast, crew and monsters of Series 1 - 4, whereas the Ballad was made to specifically honour Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner, the showrunner and Executive Producer, respectively. And if that's still not enough for you, there is also the Doctor Who Parody by the RU-vid channel the Hillywood Show. Which again, is absolutely brilliant in every way.

BTW Wilfred was an incredibly popular character in Who and the late Bernard Cribbins was much loved in the UK over his long career especially for his roles in children's TV. David Tennant and Bernard Cribbins must have become very close because Georgia (David's wife) in a tribute to Bernard Cribbins after his death in 2022 , on Instagram post said that they had named multiple children after him. One of their children is named Wilfred; I don't which other children are also named after him.

Timothy Dalton is a great actor and it was such a delight to see him in this role. My favourite Bond, still, after all this time. Plus, breaking news for people in the UK. The part of Scrooge in the annual production of A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic will be played in 24-25 by: (drum roll and four knocks) The Master himself, John Simm! I saw Christopher Eccleston play the part in January, and I thought there's be no reason to go again this year. But I think John is going to drag me back! Come to think of it, Timothy would have been an excellent Scrooge, but he's probably too old for it now.

Watching this as a fan of the old series, it was a really interesting viewpoint hearing the Doctor talk about "some new man goes sauntering away, and I'm dead." I had never thought of this before, and some people really hate that the Doctor would be so "selfish" about his future selves, but I think it makes total sense.

End of Time! Let's go! Btw there was a fan band that did Doctor Who songs and they were named Chameleon Circuit. Some of the songs have spoilers but Gallifreyan History 101 does not. It's just a fun little song that goes over some Time Lord lore. Really looking forward to part 2!

It wasn't just that Wilf is a fan favourite character, the actor who played him - Bernard Cribbins - is such a beloved figure in the UK, and since he has had a large role in children's entertainment over the years - his single Right Said Fred, the narrator of The Wombles which was repeated regularly into the 80s and I think 90s, his many, many, appearances on Jackanory over the decades, and after my time he apparently did Old Jack's Boat. Along with a bunch of other things. Most children, over the generations, will have seen something with him as a major role within while children. Ignoring his work on Doctor Who (...Both in the 60s where he was in one of the Peter Cushing films, and 2007-2009 where he played Wilf). Which isn't to diminish his work on projects that didn't have a large child audience, but while he did those projects, I don't think they are as relevant for why he was such a beloved actor. The fact you've mistaken Timothy Dalton (Who at this point in his career was most well known for playing James Bond in James Bond) with Peter Capaldi (Who at this point in his career was most well known for playing Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It) is incredibly amusing to me. Not meaning anything by it, that feels like the sort of mistake I might make.

When it comes to the best cliffhanger endings in media, for me, there’s absolutely nothing that beats the ending of End of Time Part 1. With the era long buildup of the Time Lords in the back of your mind and Timothy Dalton doing his strange, kind of out of place for this show narration over the course of this episode with the final shot before the line “This was the day… the Time Lords returned” showing those recognisable crowns from the Classic Era? It is just peak cinema. You have never seen any other Time Lords except for the Doctor and Master, you’ve only ever seen flashbacks and talks from the Doctor’s perspective about who they were but suddenly, you’re on Galifrey and the setup for the final special is the return of his people, the people who he was forced to destroy; a decision he regretted making that decision ever since. How will he react? How will they react to him? What are they planning and why are they being brought back into the story as an actual part of it? How does this relate to the Master? And what do they have to do with “the end of time itself?” A thousand questions and more from what this could possibly mean racing through your mind, with Murray Gold’s music killing it as always, literally had my 10 year old mouth hanging agape for a good ten minutes after watching this for the first time. I was absolutely blown away by this reveal and there’s few pieces of media that have been able to have an effect on me since. Not the greatest of episodes, for sure, but as perfect a cliffhanger as you could ever yearn for.

The Doctor: Even then, even if I change, it feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away, and I'm dead. I believe that each Doctor has their own view and opinion on regeneration. Some accept it, some don't, and some are in between with it. As for the 10th Doctor, I feel like here see his views on regeneration. He clearly doesn't accept it and doesn't want to. He still sees it as dying, and when he does change, that version of him will be over 😥 Such an amazing and emotional scene. David and Bernard did an incredible job. I always love scenes with The Doctor and Wilf.

16:13 "I thought it'd be cleaner..." is possibly a little nod to Bernard "Wilf" Cribbins' TARDIS history - he was in a Dr. Who movie in the 60s and visited that "Doctor"'s ship (which was indeed very neat and clean in comparison to 10's TARDIS). Fun movie though kind of only weirdly "Who adjacent" in that the "Doctor" is a human with the actual surname "Who" that built the TARDIS in his garden shed !? :). (and I _love_ Wilf and 10's conversation in the pub/cafe, two old men with way more time behind than in front, contemplating the end of the line. And of course 10's almost tearful "Don't you dare !" when Wilf says he's going to die too resonates even more now that Bernard Cribbins' himself has gone)
