Never thought I’d live to see the day where Billy had so much positive to say about an episode from this era. Truly brings joy to one’s heart. Was fully expecting to be bombarded with Moffat slander but was more than pleasantly surprised! It truly is a Christmas miracle!!
I had dropped off actively watching during the Chibnall era but you guys kept my interest in the show as a whole by your sheer personality and chemistry. I'm so glad all the classic series is accessible on iPlayer now and we have a new series to look forward to! Happy Christmas Matt, Billy (& Jonathan) I can't wait for more in the new year 🎄
This is a lovely story best enjoyed with a red wine and deep memories of your greatest unrequited love. ❤ It’s shocking Capaldi and Kingston didn’t get a full series together. They would have smashed it.
Wasn't Matt Lucas a late Addition to Series 10? Because I remember reading news articles online that some scripts were written for just the Doctor and Bill in mind and when Matt Lucas joined the cast, the writers had to find some way to have him in the story even in a small appearance. Like the Empress of Mars for example and the episode Smile as well I think. 🤔
Merry Christmas 🎄 you two 🎊 nothing especially positive to say about The husband’s of River Song I do like Nardoles character he grew on me over peter’s last season but I didn’t actually finish watching the episode in 2015 for me it was a switch it off quick I’m missing Indiana Jones on the other side lol 😂 there was just better things to watch on telly that year .Not seen it since with no plans on refreshing my memory. As always guys love the conversation & banter have a grrr8 Christmas 🎄 and I’ll be looking out for the Christmas episode ROD .Have to say I’m not too pushed about watching on Christmas day ….. Ya’s know I will though but the buzz 🐝 isn’t there for me fingers crossed 🤞 I’ll be surprised ….. but I doubt it 🤥
Nice to see Billy give some love to this much maligned and admittedly flawed Xmas Special . I really liked the resolution ( of sorts)to River Song's story. Capaldi was great. Have a Great Christmas Guys. I look forward to what you have in store for 2024.
The Husbands Of River Song was meant Moffat’s swan song finishing off his tenure, he was thinking of bowing out after Time Of The Doctor but after casting Capaldi he stayed on and continued with 8 and 9. Harmony Shoal are interesting enemies but we’re never followed on after Doctor Mysterio after one of them escaped in the body of a UNIT soldier towards the end (also they’re returning in a big finish story next year with the Fourth Doctor). River Song how I see her is basically our televised version of Bernice Summerfield and RU-vidr Poparena made this comparison when he reviewed Love And War.
I vaguely remember my interest in the show wasn’t high. Honestly after series 9 I wished I stopped watching the show because I wasn’t feeling invested in Who. I was more invested in Star Wars and Bionicle round that time. But looking back I did of course watch this Christmas special when it aired and honestly i really don’t have a strong opinion. I think I remember feeling it was better than that awful finale but like I said I don’t have a strong opinion on this story.

Before I hit play on this video I'd like to say that The Husbands of River Song is one of my favourite episodes. It perfectly encapsulates what Doctor Who should be. I'm sure Matt and Billy will definitely agree and share all my correct opinions.
I personally can't get into this one. I was never a big fan of River as much as I wanted to be but this episode felt like it was written by someone who wanted to point out all of her worst traits - the constant taking the wind out of The Doctor's sails, the jokes about men being stupid and useless and the "Mrs Robinson" style sexualisation. The last part is especially a bugbear for me. It might just be because of my own personal hangups, but the fact that The Doctor spends the first 40 minutes of this story watching himself get cheated on by his wife with multiple men is just hard to watch. It's one of the few stories I've had to switch off when I last saw it because I felt so uncomfortable - and the ending, no matter how beautifully written, acted or scored it is can't make it up for me. It's a shame because I was actually looking forward to this one - I needed a laugh at the time when this came out and it looked like it would deliver but it wasn't as funny as I hoped, so even then I couldn't get into it.
In fairness to Capaldi saying he wants kids to be able to dress like him, I don't think kids really care about having an exact replica of the costume. I think for kids as long as an outfit looks vaguely Doctor Who-y, that's all that matters. In the same way that if little Barry wants to play at being Peter Capaldi, we all take it as a given that his performance won't really be comparable to Capaldi's. However for a child it's more about the play aspect than 100% accuracy.
I was really struggling with the show at the time and don’t get on with the Capaldi era however I really enjoyed this episode it might be my favourite 12th Doctor story, possibly.

50:54 They did that same trick in Series 8 with Into the Dalek. The scene where the Doctor and Clara are in the school cupboard before walking into the TARDIS, that was shot outside the console room set. Also in regards about the Rumour regard this episode being the last, someone recently told me Mental Health Wise, Steven was exhausted at that point running Doctor Who and Sherlock. And many of the series 10 writers helped pitch in to help carry the load on Peter's final series. I don't know if it's true or not but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Would also explain why Doctor Who was off the air in 2016. To give Steven a bit of breathing room.
I've always wondered how they did the shot when the TARDIS lands in Under The Lake. You see the deep interior of the console room (no black drapes this time) then the Doctor and Clara exit and move around the exterior. It's very hard to spot a join or a masked off portion of the screen, but there must be one.
@@MarcusSheppard There would be. It takes a lot of work but with some clever camera shots and intersplicing shots. It's comes out well. One of the highlight effects of that season. The shots where Clara walks out of the interior and closes the door, she stands within the door frame. Easy to superimpose that onto to the exterior shots. And as soon as the camera changes, it's simply Jenna standing outside the police box prop.
It’s honestly kind of disappointing to see how dissuaded you both are from calling out blatant sexism due to your immutable characteristics. I’m not blaming you guys, I’m criticizing society for how it’s become socially taboo to do so. There is genuinely no excuse for some of the vile misandrist or misogynist dialogue that recurs throughout the show. You shouldn’t feel alienated from calling it out because you’re a ‘cis straight white male’. It’s wrong, no matter who the target is.
I think this episode was particularly disliked because he'll bent was meant to be deep and loved by the viewers and they would need a breather which was a miss step
I really enjoy these guys content but to be honest series 9 pulled me back into the show. To the point that I can't understand Billy's love for the Jodie era as I stopped watching after series 11. But I am very happy that someone can love something
