My biggest problem with Adam is that nuwho seems to be obsessed with having "the best" become companions. Or at least RTD. Classic Who had someone just walk into the Tardis, be extremely confrontational, and still become a companion. Whereas Adam tries to use the Tardis for his own gain, and instead of a conversation and warning from the Doctor he's immediately booted WITHOUT even having his forehead door removed. Also there's the whole romance thing with Rose being part of the reason he was kicked.

I don't even count Adam as a companion, just a supporting character who appeared in a couple of episodes and had a trip in the TARDIS. He's little different from others in the same category, like Herbert in "Timelash" or Courtney Woods in "The Caretaker/Kill the Moon".

Late to the party but the reason Simon Pegg was The Editor is because he didn't have the time to play the original character he was offered. Rose's dad Pete.

Just watched this episode last night. The Doctor and Rose's attitude towards the end pissed me off. I get their reason, but I still feel like this Doctor is turning me off. Eccelston's Doctor is awesome, but my opinion of him has shifted a lot since I started watching this series.

Yeah, although rare, there are a few single episode guest stars that seem like they could have played a more significant/long term role in the show. As another example, I recently saw a comment from someone saying they would have wanted to see Anthony Head as a Master incarnation rather than a great one episode villain.

Here's some trivia that doesn't get enough attention. Simon Pegg Repeats his "Is a slave a slave, if he doesn't know he's enslaved?" line almost verbatim in Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Speaking of things that don't get enough attention.

This story always bothers me, mainly because they completely wasted Simon Pegg. He's capable of so much more, and in this he's incredibly under sued as a villain.

Spot on. I agree with all the points except about Rose - but that's just me being biased. I kinda wish Jagrafess could have more backstory and be more menacing than just a screamy blob with teeth, or heck, might as well remove it and make the Editor the main villain with "inexplicable" technology prowess.

Honestly I just love this episode as good campy fun. Like, I know it's written pretty sloppily, but it has so many little fun moments; the opening scene, the beef milkshake, the side character's useless pew pew scifi gun, adam puking up an ice cube, Kathica complaining about not getting a promotion even after learning that floor 500 was a death trap, the ending scene with the finger snapping opening up Adam's head, plus Simon Pegg hamming it up alongside a dumb cgi blob monster. It's just perfect dumb fun for me

I can see maybe a ‘Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire’ continuum, similar to that of the Time Lord Victorious one. The only problem is, which other Doctor Who stories actually feature that concept?

Taking Adam, the alien-tech genius, to the future of humanity had all the makings of a great little story, but I'm so surprised they just didn't go in that direction.

If there’s a point to Adam in this story - the novelisation of Dalek did help inform this interpretation as did the series pitch published in DWM - it’s a test for the Doctor/Rose relationship. With Adam, Rose has another human on board whom she can relate to better, especially after the events of Dalek where she learned just how alien the Doctor still is, so it makes sense that she’s gonna wanna spend sometime with someone more her level again. This is reinforced by Adam being compared to the Doctor and his sad admission after he’s shown he can’t hack it that there really is no getting in between the Doctor and Rose. Later on Jack will end up serving the same purpose, but just more for the Doctor to actively compete against. It’s odd you’d use that scene with Adam and Rose as a mark against her seeing as that’s clearly Rose being nice. Also, while we’ll get into things in BoomTown, for now I’ll just say that Mickey isn’t the Rory Williams levels of loyal his fans like to paint him as. He freely admits he’d have given up on Rose after a year elapsed if he wasn’t a suspect, and abandoned her, flinging himself into a dumpster the last time we saw him. He made up for it, but those are definitely bad boyfriending moments. Overall another great review. A thing I appreciate the most is how you always try to see the bright side, even when it’s an episode your not a fan of. Can’t walk for the next review. Addendum: it just hit me that you could read the Doctor and Rose’s flippancy as less careless and more reassuring. Like, the calming feeling you get from professionals in their field. Also, the Doctor, I think, does show small growth by describing time travel in terms that Adam will understand (the Paris analogy), which is an improvement over the barrage of new concepts and species that Rose got given.

I think Simon Pegg in this Episode was waisted. (Now don't get me wrong) I love his performance and he does, I admit do a brilliant job as the editor (and in other think like Ice age 3, Ice age 5, Star Wars 7 and Shaun of the Dead) but It is still a waist I mean he could have been the Master in Series 3 instead or Rose's Dad. At least that way he would have had a greater more memorable part off Doctor Who considering how brilliant he is as an actor.

This story was begging to be a two parter, while not awful it's easily one of the most undercooked stories of the series. Plus, in the original script, Adam's motivation for sending info back to the 21st century was that a family member of his had an incurable disease that was cured by the far future. But with that cut, all we have to go on is that Adam is clever?

I honestly need have a problem with this episode. I really like Adam, I like the political messaging and the reason both Rose and the doctor are so suspicious is that Adam was previously employed by Henry Van Stratten so they are right to be that way and you forget that the Doctor ends up be right about Adam.

I think with Adam, what he offers a bit different than Mickey is that we have a "companion that wasn't" that failed morally. That used his position as a companion for selfish reasons which could have radically altered history. And unlike some other companions (say Rose in the very next episode) he didn't have enough goodwill to bounce back from this. Whereas Mickey gained the Doc's favour and eventually got to travel a bit. In regards to the scenes with the different gender identities, robot and Boe's pregnancies, I do kind of wonder if this undermines part of RTD's point about how Floor 500 has stunted humanity's progressiveness. Doesn't them being quote on quote "woke" and interacting with someone most would assume is an alien kind of undercut that a little bit.

Admittedly, The Long Game is the Series 1 episode I rewatch the least. I can't give my honest thoughts because I haven't seen it recently enough, but I do think you make some strong points about Adam, his role in this episode, and how he drags down the Doctor and Rose by his association. He really should only have been a side character in Dalek.
