Regarding the Doctor saying both mavity and gravity, Timelords have been established as having a greater ability to remember events that no longer happened. The most obvious example is probably how Eleven never forgot Rory even though he was removed from the timeline, while Amy forgot him quickly. The Doctor's aware history has been changed because of Donna saying mavity and adjusted to it, but he still remembers the original word.

Yes, I'm hoping they change it back to gravity at some point. Give the Doctor a chance to visit Isaac Newton again.

Absolutely loved this episode. CGI was a bit unconvincing but idc about that. Tennant and Tate were brilliant. Every time Not-Doctor smiles or smirks, it's just so menacing. I love it. It was so simple and so awesome. It made me care about Jodie's stories more than her entire era did. Because the Flux arc ended without ever clarifying whether the universe still existed or not. To hear him say that half the universe is just gone and he feels responsible... idk how they're going to deal with this in one episode. Or is Ncuti's doctor going to follow this arc? The star beast wasn't all that impressive for me. It worked, but I didn't love it. This episode got me excited for Doctor Who again.

outside of the visual effects that i guess could be a bit divisive, i actually found this episode really really spooky, in kind of a similar way to Midnight where they never truly know much about the enemy, that it's formless (to our knowledge) except when it assumes another's identity, etc. also in addition to this gimmick being budget friendly as you mentioned, i'd say it was very smart getting your best actors to play the episode's villains, cus you can be confident they'll do a great job being scary (not to say that there aren't other villains in the show played by great actors), on top of the concept itself being surreal and scary. i found Tennant's demeanor as his copy especially to be like, so intensely creepy and discomforting i couldn't help but love this episode based on that alone. and i personally found the effects to help the creepiness of it, though it seems like maybe they stylistically took you out of it a bit, which is fair too

When the ship says “coliss”, it sounds like a Québec french swear word (“câlisse”), which made me laugh out loud when I heard it. It’s like out of nowhere in a dr who episode a disembodied voice just said “fuck” with no context 😂

I think this episode definitely benefits from a second viewing, in my opinion it's more enjoyable once you've got a handle on what's going on. That said I still enjoyed it the first time I saw it, the sudden realization that the Doctor that Donna was talking to wasn't the real one gave me chills! And i think the whole idea of the creatures not understanding 'slow' and the captains slow plan to beat them was absolutely brilliant, classic Doctor Who that's up there with Midnight for me.

I like how Russell is slowly setting up major villains in these episodes (possibly for future episodes or season finales) like how the Meep mentions The Boss and now Doctor wishing he hadn’t invoked a superstition on the edge of the universe. Very interested in where these plot threads will lead!!!
@pigcowdogthing9388
@pigcowdogthing9388 9 месяцев назад
I kinda think it would be cool for The Boss to be something revealed in future doctor who seasons, but i don't think it would be too far of a stretch to say the boss is the toymaker. It's an easier direction for the show to go and it would make sense. I still hope the boss it actually something in future seasons rather than the toymaker tho. Also the superstition thing, that sets up a really good premise on why its bad every time the doctor ends up at the edge of the universe.
@pigcowdogthing9388
@pigcowdogthing9388 9 месяцев назад
I also have a theory that invoking a superstition may have somehow created a gate gor the toymaker to enter into the universe from the celestial toyroom.

Mainly because the toymaker kinda exists on the fact that impossible things can happen cos he's so powerful

I did enjoy the episode, it just didn’t feel much like an anniversary special to me - apart from the Doctor Donna and of course Wilf’s return, there really wasn’t much in the way of celebrating the history of the show?? I wish the Doctor’s duplicate had said something like “ooh, I’ve never copied someone who’s had so many faces before” and then for maybe just one line of dialogue we could another Doctor, or even the duplicate saying “oh, this isn’t the first time you’ve seen a copy of yourself, is it? what happened to the other copy? oh…oh, I see, and how is Rose?” - the amount of missed opportunities for references based on an alien COPYING THE DOCTOR’S MIND really breaks my heart

Luke, I’ve been watching Dr Who since the classic series and I remember watching some of William Hartnell’s Doctor’s adventures when I was a very little child - so I’m 60 basically! - and Wild Blue Yonder gave me the same spooky chills as I’ve had with classic Who and some of new Who - a bit like a modern take on the first episodes of classic Who like The Wheel In Space, The Mind Robber and The Ark In Space. Loved it - and I’m sure ‘newer’ Who will bring more, too. I can forgive any effects that don’t seem perfect as I was brought up with imperfect effects but imperfections hidden better on a little 405-line mono tv set. Great seeing your reaction. I watch yours and Deepa’s reactions, too; they are a great cheerer-upper on a cruddy day. 🙂

I actually prefer this special to the Star Beast one and enjoyed it a lot once it got going yet despite that I don’t think it’s an amazing episode. The main thing it had going for it is the horror/unnerving vibe of it which is rare in Doctor Who, but it felt random. I didn’t like the skit at the beginning, which felt like filler, and while I enjoyed the Not-Things they have no connection, as far as I’m aware, to any past episodes of Doctor Who so it doesn’t feel like it belongs in a “60th anniversary special”. While I didn’t like the 1st special quite as much at least Beep the Meep, who I did love, was from an old Doctor Who comic so it paid some homage to Doctor Who history unlike this one.

Well it is PG and the point of the story is about the disconnect. The funny looking creatures and the true horror of the situation, just as the 'wild blue yonder' is a war song for kids. Jolly War song = Funny Horror aliens.

Hi Lukeyread! Love your DW reactions. If you're confused as to whether you enjoyed this episode or not, that means you did not enjoy it. We are all glad Russell T. wants to push the sci-fi boundaries of Doctor Who but I feel this episode was specifically for the DW fans who continuously claim that 'Doctor Who needs to be scary again.' It seems the only thing all the fans enjoyed in this episode was the appearance of Wilfred (Bernard Cribbins RIP).

I didn’t enjoy the episode. My expectations/hopes though were for something more anniversary themed. At the moment it feels like a celebration of season 4 not of 60 years. But I have high hopes for The Giggle. On rewatching I think this is Russell doing his equivalent of one of the Toymaker’s games and I see parallels between this and the Hartnell episode, so perhaps a weird prelude to next week.

Race swapped a historical figure and it was just a whole hour of wasted content that could have been spent CELEBRATING THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY. This celebration is so dire, we may as well just be watching some Disney plus mini series where they bring ten and Donna back for a prequel. Because this 60th anniversary so far hasn’t spent a single second celebrating the show

Minus bringing back a previous popular Doctor and companion back, adapting a Tom Baker comic, return of the Toymaker, etc. An anniversary doesn't need to be cameo galore we had in Power just recently - first and foremost they should be good episodes. Touch Grass.

When this episode wants to be great, it’s absolutely great. David’s monologue in the cockpit, David and Catherine acting their chops off as both characters they’re playing and the general tone of a kind of supernatural horror we’ve never seen before is just bone chilling. The no things are one of the best concepts the show has come up with. That stuff is up there with Midnight, The Impossible Planet, Forest of the Dead and Waters of Mars for me. And Wilf’s cameo… what more needs to be said? 🥹 But unfortunately this episode also has a lot of stuff weighing it down, chief among them for me is the tonal whiplash from the “mavity” subplot. It’s dumb, it’s stupid and it doesn’t fit this episode at all. (And the less said about the unnecessary race swap the better.) But more importantly, I also found the CGI to be incredibly distracting. Even when it was good, it wasn’t fitting. I can appreciate the talent involved in some places but at the same time, I didn’t find the plasticky nature of the no things to be off putting. And not in a good way, in a “I’m watching a TV show with bad effects” kind of way. I just don’t think that angle could work, maybe if the no things had been gaseous beings like the Gelth it would have worked better and the shifting walls was the old captain’s attempt to cut them off from each other as they can’t pass through the walls, and emphasised that they literally do not understand physical matter as they are not physical beings. But as it stands, those scenes took me out of an episode I was otherwise very much invested in. Realising that Doctor and Donna weren’t speaking to each other was one of the most terrifying feelings I’ve had watching something in a long time. Overall, a huge improvement in writing, tone and story from Star Beast but for one of the last times we’re going to see David as the Doctor? In spite of this episode’s strengths, it’s still hugely disappointing as a special of the show.
