Sad, yet also a hope filled scene. The boy carries his father's love poems. The communists have not extinguished this hope. He carries these poems, with joy, into the present. Much like someone carrying the Gospel.
lovely version of this story, I always disliked the American Hollywood version, it was too glitzy and contrived to do justice to the story, and in this version the music was perfect
omg i love thsi movie it's the best movie ever. u got great taste in movies guy Can u post more plz...mani i wish i could watch this movie again but i live in america and it's never on t.v or in stores
Maravillosa esta versión, con un final muy doloroso, desgarrador cuando el padre ve a su hijo por la ventana es desolador y luego la madre también , no he llorado tanto en una película , por qué estos finales en las mejores películas?
It is a much more emotive ending than the David Lean's version, in spite of understand what is hapenning the child smiles and runs away with the poems, as Hope escapes the NKVD and the absurd of the soviet world. It is sad but also enormously positive, although it is not the version of the book. Simply marvellous.
That's my favorite movie too !!! ...and I know what u mean, that movie is nowhere to be found in North America :( One of my friend bought it in France though so I keep stealing it from her ahah
I realise this comment is ancient in internet terms and my memory of the book is hazy but but Lara didnt kill him, just wounded him (and that was in around 1905, this ending is around 1920-24). Yuri dies of heart failure. Lara is arrested(by the Cheka political police, not just normal police as it says here) due to her association with Yuri (a red army deserter) and her marriage to Strelnikov/Pasha who the Soviet regime turned against and had executed. Lara sends her daughter away to live with relatives because she knows the regime is after them all but its also hinted that the daughter vanished, as happens in the 60s film version. In reality millions of these children of disappeared 'enemies of the people' ended up in orphanages in the USSR, which is where we presume child Yuri will end up after this end scene.
