Allergy and immunology specialists Wei Wei Li and Payel Gupta debunk eight common myths about environmental and seasonal allergies. They talk about how pollen from flowers is not the real trigger for your seasonal allergies and how there's no such thing as a hypoallergenic pet. They also discuss whether eating local honey can cure seasonal allergies.

I have a hyper-allergenic cat. He causes reactions even in some people who generally don't have problems with cats (like my younger sister). He's also a major cuddle-bug, so it's a struggle to balance giving him the affection he needs and not having my symptoms become unbearable even with meds.

I know it’s the Fel-D 1 protein in cats’ saliva that people are usually allergic to. the supposedly “hypo-allergenic” cats apparently produce less of said protein, so it wouldn’t surprise me if there are cats that produce more than normal amounts

Whoever said allergy shots don't work are silly. Not only do I feel more comfortable around shots, but now I can eat things that I've never been able to before! My allergy isn't severe, but is pretty broad (most fruit, some nuts, some veggies). I haven't been able to eat apples for 9 years because my reaction was so not worth it, but now I kinda can! I have allergies and I have a cat. What helped me is an industrial active carbon filter. They are in the mid-range cheep. 600m³/h ACF = 100€ and a silent Fan is around 150€-250€. (Loud ones are around 60€) You need to wash the prefilter every 3 Month and buy a new Active-Carbon-Filter every year. It improves the air quality massively. Industrial ones are not so pretty, but way cheaper and more powerful than any fancy consumer model.

All grasses and all weeds are flowering plants, as are most trees. Maybe they mean ornamental flowers or something, but most of the common pollen allergens are definitely angiosperms (flowering plants). Also some of the largest pollen, from conifers, actually spreads the farthest, due to the winged shaped of their pollen.

I have been told by some doctors that I'm allergic to pollen but it's far from clear to me what it gets triggered by and when. I've moved around a lot, and it's hard to tell when it's a cold or an allergy.
@caterscarrots3407

My first ever tree pollen allergy, was my worst. I felt completely normal while outside, and then as soon as I came back inside, I felt very congested. And then the next day, I almost felt sick, I was coughing, had constant ear pressure, cycling between wet and dry sneezing, postnasal drip, only thing I didn't have was a sore throat. That lasted for a week. And then right after, I had a cold, which meant for me, no more postnasal drip, no more constant sneezing, no more ear pressure, and my throat became sore. That was in my teenage years. Over the years, these allergies have been steadily lasting longer and longer, but they've also been getting milder and milder, to the point where all I felt this year was a constant eye itch from Late February-Mid June. Several years after I started getting tree pollen allergies, I started getting ragweed pollen allergies. They are usually at their worst from Late August - Early September, although I will get on and off symptoms sometimes into November. July is generally an allergy free month for me, as are December and January. February, October, and November, sometimes I have allergies, sometimes I don't. March-June, always have allergies, same for August and September.

@andij605
@andij605 2 года назад
My allergist started to talk in a low tone and gave me tips in a way that her colleagues would not hear it, cause apparently some of the scientific evidence there is lacking. Do look up estrogen vs histamine, though! One reason allergists can't always help with excess histamine, cause it can be simply excess estrogen. And an allergist has no authority to say, hey, just stop your birth control, and you'll feel better. You'd need an immunologist and an endocrinologist to work hand in hand, but they don't normally do that...

Four questions: So what is wrong with the immune system? The medication does not treat the decease, it lessens the symptoms? Is it not true that people have an underlying autoimmune decease that irritates the patient and is noticeable in symptoms such as Asthma, rash on their skin or a runny nose? Is it true that even if you identify the triggers that make the immune system change, the way the system change is unknown?
@stevehockey1143
@stevehockey1143 2 года назад
Not a doctor, but I have allergies myself and part of a research group that pioneered allergy immunotherapy in Canada. The reason why humans have allergies is due to an over-response from the IgE white cells. Although the production of IgE's is normal to combat parasites, etc. its reaction to allergens is not. The issue about allergies is that it is an autoimmune disease (not decease, decease means dead lol). This drastically makes it harder for medication to treat the issue at the source as it can't rewrite your cells to tell it to stop attacking allergens. Allergy medications can only mediate symptoms by blocking receptor cells or reducing the production of IgEs. Severe allergies usually comes in a bundle of 3: allergies, asthma and eczema. All of them are basically an overreaction to irritants/allergens. Allergies is body-wide. Asthma is specifically for your lungs and eczema is for the skin. Yes, there isn't enough reliable data to exactly tell why the system reacts this way nor how to change it. It is easy to identify allergens and triggered cells but the reason behind these actions is why allergies are so hard to understand.
@SevCaswell
@SevCaswell 2 года назад
@@stevehockey1143 There is some emerging evidence that over use of cleaning products like anti-bacterial cleaners in homes with young children can contribute to severity of allergies. For the immune system to develop normally it needs to be exposed to bacteria and viruses on an every day basis, but removing the normal background levels of bacteria in the home environment can cause abnormal immune responses.

It's also important to know allergies can come in the future due to hormonal change. My mom is a clear example. She had no allergies up until she had my brother. She later developped a pollen allergy. Some might say it's because she moved from Ukraine to Italy but she claims there are blooming trees that live in both places that all of the sudden gave her allergies. She recalls very much not being pregnant and not having allergies to having a child and having allergic attacks. Luckily she has mild symptoms that are easily manageable. Sometimes her eyes feel shut but in most cases she has burning sneezing fits that are easily treatable with nasal sprays.

To get back my hair I started applying Cocoonion anti hair fall kit by littleeextra and it proved effective in enhancing hair density and hair growth. I would advise if you apply it then always cleanse your hair by mixing shampoo with a little water before using as it performs better in that way. Also when you apply hair oil then warm it a little and then massage on scalp. Apply it a minimum of once or twice a week. Use neem wood comb while combing your hair and use scalp massager while washing your hair to get remove dirt, sebum etc and it gives even better results.

I doubt I'll get an answer to this but here goes anyway. I had "bad" year-round allergies growing up. At times I was so miserable that I didn't think I'd even survive as I lived off my allergy medicines. Anyway, my allergies showed up at the start of my freshman year in high school ('82) and lasted until 2010 when I was in an accident that messed up my neck and back. Anyway, I had to watch a video when I started going through PT. In this one video, it said that 70% of allergy cases were the result of your neck alignment. This made me laugh as my thoughts then were simply "Yeah, Right!" Well, the interesting thing is that my allergies basically disappeared after I got my neck realigned. Now I have maybe 8 to 10 days a year where I have very mild allergy conditions. So my question is, did my allergies just suddenly go away or was there something to this chiropractor video saying that allergies are caused by your neck alignment?

HYPO means less than normal not absent of or 0. Hypoallergenic pets sound accurate still because it's possible that mild allergies they create less of a reaction.

Yes. I understand that. Still, I believe that what they say is correct, because a pet that provokes fewer reactions for you may not do so for me, so it is not a hypo pet, it's only hypo for you.

The really weird thing is that climate change has actually made seasonal allergies worse.
@b.calvinsaul1909
@b.calvinsaul1909 2 года назад
It has nothing to do with the the temperature increasing 0.6 degrees Celsius. New plant hybrids are being developed at a stunning rate. New grasses, trees, flowers, mosses, etc. Increased self-pollination, growth periods, active days per year - these are just a few of the developments. You are exposed to pollen varieties that didn't exist ten years ago, and in more days of the year.

@@poopsmagoo because it's been going on since the day this planet started existing. It's not man made its a natural phenomenon. saying that bees only get their nektar/pollen from flowers is not right. lots and lots of trees get pollinated by bees (such as apple trees). however using honey still wont work, since either the honey is filtered and cooked, thus removing the pollen that is supposed to expose you and prepare your body for allergies, however even in raw honey the concentration of pollen is waaaaaayyy too low to be registered by your body. plus its not that safe to eat

One way to get rid of allergies is to strengthen the immune system. I was able to get rid of my environmental allergies through breathing exercises and cold exposure.
@sc-qp4eg
@sc-qp4eg 2 года назад
cool anecdote, not scientifically backed though. allergies are actually an immune response so not sure how 'strengthening' the immune system would be helpful in this case. for example, many people with severe allergies and/or allergic asthma actually take immunosuppresants which ARE effective in reducing immune response ... aka reducing allergy related symptoms
@cewuifgerv
@cewuifgerv 2 года назад
@@sc-qp4eg Yes it is anecdotal, but I am not the only one. To test this scientifically, which I think we should do a lot more of, is very expensive, and there is not much profit to be had, so it does not happen.

Strengthening the immune system isn't possible. However, strengthening your affected organs to reduce the symptoms is scientifically proven to work. Regular exercise and physical activities improves the health of your lungs as well as manages your stress level. This in consequence reduces the severity of breathing symptoms and since eczema can be stress related, it can also improve on skin-based symptoms. It's impossible to get rid of allergies but it is possible to reduce the symptoms to the point that it doesn't inconveniences your daily life anymore.

How can it be that the same doctor says "there are no hypoallergenic pets" and the second after say "I tolerate some cats better than others, but there are no pets that are 100 % nog allergenic". The word hypoallergenic does not mean "100 risk free" it means "lower risk". If a dog has a big like aura of allergens around them, any allergic can tell that that is worse than a shortcut washed dog that do not shed (shedding spreads allergens with the small skinparts thar comes loose att the same time, as may also occur with naked dogs but not so much with non shedding dogs like poodles and other breeds with coat that grows like human hair). How is it possible to call this "there are not such thing as low allergenic pets". And pets may be fish, tortoise and other. Does these doctors mean that it does not matter what you buy as pet, since there "are no hypoallergenic pets"? Hyper and hypo dos NOT mean "100 % and 0 %". Those words mean more like "much and little". I know several allergic people that has reptiles, but they can not meet a dog or a cat. Reptiles are lowallergenic pets. I my language, the professors at allergies talks about "low allergenic apples", "low allergenic dogs" and so on. Meaning: "this allergens gives reaction, but less" or "this apple/dog breed is tolerated totally by som people with allergy against apples/dogs". Black and white thinking amongst doctors makes people not listen, and open the ways for people to pseudo crap medicine.
