Speaking of falls, my grandma waited 24 hours to go get her neck pain checked out after a fall. Cue six weeks in a neck brace because her neck was broken. The bone she broke usually leaves you a quadriplegic for life. My grandma? No paralysis whatsoever. She spent two days in the hospital and was used as a case study for a group of fresh new interns. (She agreed.) A total of nine doctors had to go see her for themselves. This kind of outcome from breaking that bone is a medical miracle. Why my grandma waited 24 hours? Her friends were coming over for lunch.

I was tutoring at a Sylvan Learning Center one year, and was told I'd be working one on one with a middle aged woman, a very unusual situation, to say the least. Turns out she'd had a massive brain aneurism/stroke, the survival rate of which was less than 4-5%, and anyone who did somehow manage to pull through, was given a 0% chance of being anything other than a "vegetable", as she put it. That lovely woman, not only survived, but was able to do nearly everything she could prior to it. She just struggled with her speech, and reading fluidity/comprehension, hence why she was there. Truly a miracle, and a great reminder that as bad as things can sometimes seem, they can always be A LOT worse. Be grateful for what you have, and don't sweat the small stuff. Amazing what the mind is capable of!?!?

Patient here. I have adhd, diagnosed when I started school. My parents didn't tell me, instead got upset at me for problems I had due to my symptoms (problems with concentration and working memory, among others), always pointing out that I can do better, which is true for good days when my symptoms aren't too bad. Basically, I got punished for not making my symptoms go away. After my mom slipped up last year, I managed to get an adhd expert (psychologist who didn't specialise in adhd didn't realise what caused my problems). She confirmed the diagnosis, told me I have autism, too Now I need therapy for adhd as well as my lack of self-esteem

About the homeless man, where did you expect him to go? The hospital won't let you stay there for your healing time and he's homeless. You get kicked out of parks, bus stops, and everywhere else where you can be seen because it disturbs people. Maybe allow people to stay in the hospital for care regardless of insurance

When I was hospitalized last year, I shared the room with a 60-something year old man, with both feet amputated. It was untreated diabetes - he knew he had it, he just didn't want to do anything about it for 10-12 years, because "I really can't be arsed to spend my time on such crap!" Wasn't until his feet were black and he could no longer walk that he would seek medical help.

A former co-worker of mine (Terry) was told by his doctor due to a medical condition he could have only one beer a day. So what does he do? He doesn't drink at all for a week and the next day he has 7 beer. Umm, it doesn't work that way Terry. He ended up in the hospital with internal bleeding. Needless to say Terry wasn't too bright.
@Z38_US
@Z38_US 2 года назад
Technically his way of thinking makes sense. Only 1 beer a day = not drink for 7 days means 7 beers in one day. Makes sense if put like that but if you can only drink 1 beer a day at most because of a medical condition well yeah then that doesn't make much sense anymore

Glad my opticians was next to the bus stop. I was going to meet some friends to visit an art gallery. Had what I thought was a minor problem with one eye so thought to pop in just for a check (UK so no charge). 20 minutes later I'm off to Moorfields Eye Hospital with a referral for detached retina. Had the operation next day under local anæsthetic kept my sight in that eye. Best thing was I told several friends about it and 2 years later one comes back tells me I saved her sight because without my description she would probably have ignored the symptoms until too late

My grandmother tried smoking while on oxygen, twice...luckily not with the cannula (I think that's what it is) in her nose, so she had some idea that it was a bad idea 😑 We've since taken away all smokes and lighters so she has no access, but she's just gotten worse because of the amount of lung damage ☹️ She's always been skinny but she's literally skin and bones at this point. We've warned my little brother, who's 11, that she might not make it to Christmas so we have to love her and value every visit until she goes 😕

I get the idea of the guy eating a chili dog after abdominal surgery - he was stupid, but I do understand him. I had emergency abdominal surgery about 4 - 5 years ago, and after 8 days in the hospital "eating" what they termed a "clear liquid diet" (which was neither clear nor entirely liquid, but still not at all substantial) I was sent home with instructions to continue the diet for another five days. Which I dutifully did. But as soon as I was able to eat regular food again, the first thing I did was go out and get a friggin' cheeseburger. It was heavenly. I also discovered the fastest way to lose 20 lbs was to eat a "clear liquid diet" for 10 - 15 days. Not worth it.

Somehow I understand people who don't seek help with genitalia. My gyno would get upset at me for questions about mine, as women should know what's normal and talking about genitalia isn't appropriate. @MrJest2
@MrJest2 2 года назад
I had a friend who had breast cancer, and started doing all these "alternative medicines". I couldn't understand it. Took a while, but I finally got the story straight - she was doing them because she had no other choice; by the time anything was detected the cancer had already metastasized all over her body. See, she had no medical insurance, and hadn't seen a doctor in well over a decade. All that time she felt fine until one day she had a "sore" that erupted out of her chest and solid tissue started coming out of it over a few days... then she thought "maybe I'll just go in and pay cash, because this is weird." All her organs, bones, even brain was affected before the cancer was ever discovered. There was literally nothing the doctors could do once her condition was diagnosed other than tell her "go home and die. We'll give you drugs so it won't hurt so much." Which, ultimately, is exactly what happened... but in the meantime she tried whatever she could think of to see if it would help. She was 34.
@SaraMarie41

@@MrJest2 sorry for your loss I was pointing out how many folks, even when insurance are forced to pay, would resort to alternative medicine as the first time of defense. Before long, a Dr Phil like guy shows up before long. Where I live, insurance companies have to pay up before if for preexisting conditions. It applies to both state and private companies. If alternative medicine is a last resort, then insurance companies have to pay up. The state takes that seriously. To be fair, I've been on state-owned insurance for as long as I can remember due to disabilities that limits how long I can work in a day.
