" Asthall and the Mitford Bells "
Filmed, directed, edited by Dominic J Holland
In the tiny village of ASTHALL, which has been a settlement since before the Romans and came into prominence during their occupancy, there is an ancient church that has served the community faithfully for over a thousand years.
When Jeremy Holand was awarded the job of Churchwarden in 2000 he discovered the Bell Tower was silent and the ring of three bells had not been sounded for over 40 years due to the collapse of the old oak bell frame erected in 1870 after a fire destroyed the 15th Century frame. Encouraged by the PCC (Parochial Church Council) Jeremy then embarked on a fund raising and planning exercise to lower the three original bells (two of which were listed as medieval), obtain there necessary Faculty (permission) from the Diocese, design the new " ringing floor" above the existing vestry and raise the required £ 65,000 to enable the Bell hanger, Nicholson's of Bridport to start the project.
This took a few years to get going but by the autumn of 2005 we were able to witness the casting of the three new bells in London at the old Whitechapel Foundry (continuously casting bells since the 16th Century!) having lowered the bells with local volunteer labour during the summer. The bells were then transported to the bell hangers works in Bridport where they were re-assembled in their new frame and dissembled again and transported back to Asthall and raised back into the tower with block and tackle over a few cold an wintry days to be made ready for the first peal on Christmas Day.
Loyally supported by the villagers of Asthall, the funds came in via various charity functions, Raft Races down the River Windrush, Village Fetes, Charity evenings and much support from the various Bell Charities, and private individuals. It was good to see the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, Deborah, present a bell in memory of her brother and famous Mitford Sisters who were all brought up in the Manor at Asthall, close by the Church of St Nicholas. She was able to remember her childhood at the Manor and gave us some great footage in an interview at her home in Derbyshire, Chatsworth House.
The bells were fully operational for the Dedication Service in March 2006 presided over by Bishop Colin of Dorchester, together with the Burford Benefice Vicar, Richard Coombs; over 100 parishioners and supporters attended an inspiring service.
Now that the bells have been re-installed. We hope they will now be happily ensconced in the tower for another 1000 years, so our job for posterity was well appreciated.
Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, Deborah

She was a real Lady! RIP! Noblesse oblige is a French phrase literally meaning "nobility obliges". The Dictionnaire de l’Académie française defines it thus: ⁕Whoever claims to be noble must conduct himself nobly. ⁕ One must act in a fashion that conforms to one's position, and with the reputation that one has earned. The Oxford English Dictionary says that the term "suggests noble ancestry constrains to honorable behavior; privilege entails to responsibility." Being a noble meant that one had responsibilities to lead, manage and so on. One was not to simply spend one's time in idle pursuits.

Wonderful lady. Too bad the interviewer was more interested in his own voice than hers. Fortunately she did manage to get some dialogue in spite of him.

If you only had known who the interviewer was... it was my film. I self funded it a 21 year of age before graduation from film school.. first year.. and had taken over a year to produce. My first go at it anyway. Excuse my father and his moment to be apart of the film. My current work ATM at 41 :) dpdomholland.com hope I’ve improved but ..Probably still shit ;)

Now trying to set the record straight here is a short outline of the Mitfords:. - Nancy, the eldest, was a noted writer, both as a novelist and biographes. Commander of the Order of the British Empire, she was also made an Officer in the French Legion of Honour in 1972. - Jessica, a socialist, also became a well-known writer. -Thomas, the only son, was killed in action in Burna during WWII, in 1945. -Deborah married the Duke of Devonshire and became politically active when she and her hus

Nancy was a socialist 1950s Labor Party voter. Jessica was a full in Communist and so far as I know she never really rejected Stalin. Diana was the great beauty of the sisters. She married a Guinness and was the brightest of the Bright Young People until she threw over that life to marry Mosley, a once promising young progressive Conservative who founded the British Union of Fascists and was not surprisingly treated as beyond the pale in UK. Deborah's husband unexpectedly inherited the dukedom. He was a fairly standard Tory who eventually moved to the center left SDP.

- Diana for her part, married Sir Oswald Ernald Mosley. Mosley though a WWI decorated veteran is mostly renembered as the founder of the British Union of Fascists (later merged with the British Union of Fascists (Blackshirts) in 1932). Thru Unity, both Mosley and Diana had ties with the Nazis and were in fact married in 1933 at Goebbels' home. - He and Diana were interned during WWII from 1940-43 (like a good number of active fascist in England) held under house arrest for the remainer o

In fact, of the seven Mitford children, only Unity can be labelled a nazi and an outspoken antisemite. She was actually quite close to Hitler and was in Germany for many years in the 30's, up until the outbreak of the war, when she shot herself in the head, survived her wound, and was repatriated to England under Hitler's care and personal orders. She finally succombed a few years later (1948) when the bullet still lodged in her brain caused a massive infection. - Diana for her part, married
