oneil stan agree with you bro, 40 years of I. M. F. money has been gone into the pocket of politician and not been used to build the country.member of parliament giving guns to people to intimidate people to vote for them just to keep them in power so they can pocket money and make them self rich

Remember the same people keep the government in power so why blame the government. Bob Marley said you can fool some of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time.

Well you have a point. But if your placed in a position to lead why not do it right instead of stealing all the IMF and distributing guns to guns and ammo to control political interest that only suit you not the nation your right the people are to be blamed but when the army fails don't blame the soldier no, the blame rest on its general

Pardon the incorrect sentences but all forms of crime in Jamaica leads right back to some political leader. If we want to change the situation ,crime wise in Jamaica the head of the river must first be purged. The police , army every one is trying but look not at the passengers in the vehicle but the Driver they are the ones leading the country/ Vehicle
@gamalmothersil6943
@gamalmothersil6943 8 лет назад
So why did it lead back to the political leaders. If the passengers in the vehicle had a choice they would not be in that vehicle.

How can the crime rate decrease if the government don't have the adequate jobs needed to keep people out of trouble? What can they do to keep themselves busy? Im not condoning violence but Jamaica need tourism to survive. Jamaica shouldn't have left underneath queen Elizabeth's control.

Listened to the people and a great deal of them, including the director of the documentary, have very little knowledge of economics. If you look at country's that are economically stable you will realize that the private sector makes up a great deal of the job market. The people in the film keep saying the government needs to do this and that... What the government needs to do is invest in education and training so if a multinational companies want to invest in Jamaica there are bright minded people here to fill job positions. The government doesn't own the farms and factories so they cant export shit. What they can do is enrich local business, take the duty off equipment that are use to mass-produce consumer good, regularize and enforce tax laws so each man pays his fair share and seek overseas markets for Jamaican goods. The people's mentality have to change also. In the heights of the 2008 crash people still find money to party every weekend and are not interested in saving and investing, we cry about the fact that we are importing more than we export but fail to support the local business and continue to crave imported shit. Once a mother use to buy some sweet potato and coconut at the market and bake a decent pudding for her kids but now they give them the MSG, fatty, salty shit from Trinidad and the US. For Jamaica to be any better each man needs to change is outlook and attitude. As Gandhi said "Be the change that you want to see in the world"
@camilleizrad
@camilleizrad 7 лет назад
I agree that consumption of imported goods only feeds the beast the people in the video are complaining about, also they mention repeatedly that Jamaica needs more factories so there can be more jobs. You are correct that it is not the government who created the job market par-say, but it is the government who deals with foreign investment of business in Jamaica via regulations, subsidies, tax breaks and a plethora of other mechanisms. The government is under obligation to privatize and commodify Jamaican land, assets and resources as part of contract to the IMF to restructure in a way that suites a neoliberal agenda in-order to repay loans they received with ridiculous interest rates designed to keep Jamaica in debt. One aspect of the restructuring agenda is to divert money from the public sector into the financial sector. In an International Monetary Fund executive summary titled “Caribbean Small States: Challenges of High Debt and Low Growth” the virtual non-existent growth of the Caribbean states is discussed in the “Challenges” section. The IMF recommends that based on experience “fiscal consolidation based on expenditure reductions tend to be more effective than tax-based consolidations. However, for countries with large adjustment needs, fiscal consolidation may need to be a balanced combination of spending cuts and revenue increase” . This means that the institutional restructuring of the Jamaican economy via IMF contract policies is forcing the government to "sell out" Jamaica. Though the individuals in this documentary weren't very educated about the economy, there positions are not necessarily at a fault of their own, there is a structural problem that is "keeping them down" so to speak.
@lazlieni

You are so right camille cuypers. I think Jamaica was setup to fail since its birth as a nation. When the Brits left we didn't have people who could strategically manage a country. Also, a lot of Jamaicans were still illiterate and not educated so the financial sector suffered for years. We were basically forced to take the IMF's money and once a country does that then the IMF basically owns that country. There was an attempt to kick them out in the 1980s but the capitalists would not have it. (If you need more on this watch "CIA Activities In Jamaica" on RU-vid). I'm not yet in my 30s and by the looks of it my grandchildren will be still paying back the IMF "loans" that we are getting now. Its sad..
@camilleizrad
@camilleizrad 7 лет назад
Thank you for the video, I will watch it! I am researching the Jamaican economy in school currently, and have been trying to determine what sort of economic plan would help Jamaicans take back Jamaica. I dont understand how what the IMF or World bank does to developing countries is legal, but I seriously hope that I get to see some reform in my lifetime.
@Sonturist
@Sonturist 7 лет назад
It's the IMF loans that the Jamaican government took that's the major problem. 40 cents of every dollar goes to the loan interest. Leaving only 60 cents. Once the government pays itself hardly anything is left to invest in education or to even provide small business loans. Over time it compounds and gets worse. So how do they get out of IMF loans. Reparations
@Sonturist
@Sonturist 7 лет назад
Also the trade regulations imposed for getting the loan means foreign companies USA can ship cheap food to the island and wipe out the local producers because they cannot compete at those prices.

My brother and i are constantly debating the merits of the Michael Manley era. In my opinion there were two political errors that the post independence leaders did and that they missed the opportunity to have a federated Caribbean. The second was Michael Manley's close association with Fidal Castro. This 50+ historical period has taught us one thing. Be as self reliant as possible and don't put too much trust in politicians to solve your problems.

What makes an economy a "bad" economy? What makes unemployment a bad thing? Have you ever thought about it? Even our grandmothers knew that technological progress means that we will all become unemployed and that machines will do most of the work for us. The problem isn't unemployment ... the problem is a monetary system which forces us to do pointless jobs in order to survive instead of sharing the wealth machines create among everybody ...
@Audfile

who owns the machines? everybody? No, businesses do. who designs and develops and builds the machines? Everybody? No? Then why should everybody get stuff for free?

Then tell me who developed PHP, Perl, mySQL, mongoDB, then tell me who invented computers, Mathematics, etc., etc., ... ... you see, you can't even tell who built that machine ... it's a collective endeavor and it builds on a million "older" inventions and cultural heritage.

@ruppelspoopels

+supahacka that only matters if...the money isn't backed up by anything just money(debt) I understand the debt theory. It seems that you don't understand that power only respects power. The proletariat masses can never force the elites to do anything unless they have mastery of the lands resources. Which is power, wealth and influence. All money represents something..... what does the Jamaican dollar represent?
@supahacka
@supahacka 8 лет назад
You won't change a system which creates poverty (by design) by accumulating money. ;-) You change the system by creating alternatives ... free from money and hierarchical structures ... and by communicating socioeconomic alternatives and by spreading love and brother- and sisterhood. Might want to read "Sacred Economics" by Charles Eisenstein ... it's a free book.

If Jamaica loses 70 percent of its most recent and educated population each year who do we have left to know right from wrong .My fellow Jamaicans on here what we witnessing right now in Jamaican are a people training and and arming there minds for War the rule of law is out the window in that country. The police can't be effective in carrying out there duties what we are looking at a revolution waiting to happen any day now. And if you think I am joking , just look at the country's crime output each year. Right now the country of Jamaica is almost at 1000 Murder rate can we imagine that for an island that small. In the first year of the American invasion of Sadam's country 2000 American soldiers died . In the same year Jamaica rivaled and even surpass that. so tell me are we safe in our own country

oh yes, east kington, the stomping grouds of my youth. right below dunkirk, to be exact. wild street, 1wild street. jamaica is perfect. they have god and jah, the most churches per capita in the world. god and/or jah will solve all their problems. right? jamaica has always been in crisis. I'm 51 years old the problems that jamaica faces, were present when i was a child in dire poverty on wild street. I wrote a great deal about that in my book, black passenger yellow cabs.
@chaseevis4739
@chaseevis4739 7 лет назад
blackpassenger God leaves that up to people. People cannot blame God for not doing the things written in that book. It doesn't matter what your beliefs are. You might be able to agree that the biblical definition of love is a very good one. What keeps God from operating through people's lives is the people themselves. People want to try to use God like a genie in a lamp rather than serving Him. And if people point their finger at God for what they or the devil are doing, how can they really expect God to do stuff. HE is the one that is God. It's not the other way around. Ya get mi, bruda? He is real. If you lived in Jamaica, I'm sure that you know this because the devil does make himself known on that island. Jamaicans are not stupid people; but unfortunately, intellect has nothing to do with spiritual understanding. Only those whose hearts are pure will understand the deeper mysteries of God. A person has to decide that they want God more than anything else. Nothing can come before Him. If most people in Jamaica understood this, there would be alot more good stuff happening there than bad stuff. The issue in Jamaica is alittle more complex than this, though. England is keeping them down financially with corrupt politicians. This causes all those hungry people with no jobs to resort to whatever means necessary. Sometimes, that means violence.

I have visited Jamaica since 2011 twice every year and I have friends that live there whom I consider like family. One of the problems I have noticed is that the businesses like KFC, Burger King and such only pay the lowest wage possible. While they are charging the same amount for their food as they do in Canada. Alberta Canada KFC pays minimum wage of $12 an hour and in Jamaica they only pay $2 an hour. I don't know why the business owner are allowed to get away with paying such a low wage. Poverty breeds violence and this is why there is so much crime and violence. If people could make a good living wage the country would see a huge drop in crime.
@shauncameron8390

But Alberta's living costs are much higher than Jamaica's. That $12/hr wage doesn't go very far and few people work for that much anyway.

Jamaica is failing for a combination of things, you hear people mention our "brand" a few times I think that idea is very bad for us, because the value of the brand or a persons time and effort is not determined by them but others. The lady at 20:00 talks bout the cheap work Chinese people offer, because she and many Jamaicans want big pay for little work. Then when workers get mad they strike block roads and so on, international firms pack up and leave, thats why we don't have factories, back in the 90s early 2000 best dressed almost shut down because workers would strike at the drop of a hat, its not sustainable and not worth it for any company to invest with an environment like that. Be happy someone was willing to buy the cement factory, only 2 out 5 of our bauxite factories are running. We also just need to learn to live within our means, I know someone who does short term loans in JA and its crazy to see these people borrowing 30-50k to go party and then talk about how they struggling to send their kids to school. We love floss too much. The list can go on and on, but the Gov needs to do a better job at collecting taxes and pay off this debt and invest in people.

Why cant Jamaicans begin to formulate their thoughts more cohesively and articulately ????? The types of responses show that we cannot hold a decent critical conversation to address the deep seated ways in which we are being governed!!! No mention of socialism, marxism and the fact that capitalism by its very nature is non democratic!!! Workers can no longer consider themselves participants in the decisions of the Workplace, The CEOS of the major companies that still remain make all the decisions and circulate the profits in their small circles. A revolution of thought is needed but it begins with knowing the mnerits of the governing systems of the world. Viz - a - vis true communism, Marxism, Capitalism, true Anachism, Nationalism Socialism etc: Then and only then the people can launch a forceful revolution bringing the change they need.

My husband made it clear that it is not safe for us to visit Jamaica, given its population's pathological hatred of gays, so we haven't gone and most likely won't. Homophobic Jamaica is annually missing out on many billions of dollars that gay tourists as well as their families and friends spend in more tolerant countries. Oh well, Jamaica, enjoy your poverty. the thing that crippled jamaica is the mismanagement by the pnp over the last several decades. when looking at mismanagement, FINSAC comes to mind. that whole debacle crippled small businesses and the middle class with insane interest rates that were more than the value of the loan. this occurred in the late 90s and the country has not recovered since.

One sided video, interview not people in Kingston but the rest of the country also. Also what did the government have to say about all this. If you want to do good reporting you have to talk to all sides. All this video shows is the bad side of Jamaica. What about the good like tourism and bauxite industry just to name a fiew? What about world class athletes, and the masses of foreigners returning to the country to retire? This video makes Jamaicans look like a bunch of poor people complaining and begging for handouts. Jamaicans may be many things but we are not a bunch of poor people begging for handouts. Our mentality is to work hard and stride to be on top just like everyone else no matter what the cost is; example how Jamaican stereotypes work four jobs in America. I think that one of Jamaica main problem is a lack of national purpose by the government and the people. Instead of just trying to survive and get by day to day. We need to pick a money making industry and stay with it at all cost like the Japanese did with the Auto and tech. industry. Our government and people need to look beyond the bodes of the island and say how can we secure our place amongst the world most powerful.

Jamaica is not alone regarding poor countries being looted due to unfair foreign debt arrangements. Exactly how much does JA owe IMF etc? Look at Ecuador as an example..It is said that in1978 they borrowed $16 million, but their debts rose to $4.2 billion by 2006 despite having paid a whopping $7.1 billion in interest! Bankers logic is 0.0016 - 7.1 = 4.1 so over $11 billion interest. You are only ever paying off the interest. Have such arithmetic tricks helped Ecuador or Jamaica to improve their condition? Quite the opposite! Getting hooked on US fast food products etc does not help either. Maybe Jamaica's leaders need to find a way to cancel or re structure their unfair foreign debt and so gain independence and a fresh start.

I agree about bad minded people but at the end of the day leadership is lacking in every way ,I don't find a lot of the moves that Andrew holness is making too intelligent ,this is a big mess and he need to do more than just chat like all the others before him have done,he needs people with a track record of success to study the problems and then after identifying the problems then real solutions can come up ,I genuinely feel he wants to help but is time for action now , out with the corruption n start first with the dirty police dem

can some of these people even spell the word, "economy" ?
@chaseevis4739
@chaseevis4739 7 лет назад
shevmc could you spell that word if your parents were too poor to put you through school? people have to pay for school in Jamaica. If There was no work for their parents, is it their fault that they can't spell economy? If your countries economy collapses next month, how much good will it really do you to know how to spell this word? Do you have kids to feed? Lots of these people do. If you were in their shoes, would you want someone to feel bad for your kid not having food instead of sitting being their computer poking fun at you? It may very well be you or your family in their shoes someday.

You need to bring the country up to date open up museum for history places of interest. Have a dance school where foreigners can be taught how to dance the carribbean way. Tourists should be able to travel round ever part of the island and see it's beauty clean up the beaches build up to date beach bars.Where you cook your traditional foods in the open. It should be a place where other nationalities want to come and spend money in turn this would create job's. It's an idea😕😕😕

The people in power never say what you said, they take responsibility for the economy so I want to hear from them if that is true. Election is coming up so I want to hear from the real problem.
