Somehow I missed this comment, I think RU-vid may have blocked it temporarily for containing "9/11". And it certainly was one of Sonic's lower points, but I'd argue Sonic '06 probably fits that description way better.
@@Alex-ABPerson Sonic 06 dev team tried really hard like the live stream team too. It's a shame that the sonic the hedgehog franchise always gets to deep water.
Funny enough, if you beat the Studiopolis Zone Act 2 boss (the Weather Mobile) in Sonic Mania, during the "Act Clear" bonuses you can hear the buzz from the stream as a little reference to this stream.
Yep, I said it somewhere, and I guess I didn't say it in the video if this comment is here (I thought I did), but given Hunter, the guy in charge of the stream, was one of the programmers working on Sonic Mania, it was basically him making fun of his own work, which is amusing
@@Alex-ABPerson Oh interesting! I had no clue he worked on sonic mania!

What an excellent account of what happened! For all its worth, the event difficulties where definetly overblowned for "haha Sonic bad" sake. The worst thing that happened here was Hyper Potions deciding to play a lullaby for everyone at the start of the show lol.

Also, Johnny Gioeli stalling for life gives me life.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, I do think Hyper Potions really wasn't a good way to open the show at all :P Also yes Johnny stalling is quite funny, you can see the full thing over on my other video containing the full stream completely untouched, at 1:56:30: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mzV6RVR2D8g.html
12:30 All these years, I had no idea it was THAT bad! I'm dying this video is incredible. A breakdown like this is exactly what I wanted for so long thank you. Why was the costume contest cut though? Also I wish you had pointed out how the Totino's girl is clearly heard saying something like "Can you just pretend that they are actually different flavors" and he agrees, having no idea that she was live when she tried to slip that past. I hope Internet Historian makes a video on this and uses you as a source
Hey, thanks for checking out the video - I'm glad to hear you like it so much. I was surprised no one had done it so I did it myself! "Also I wish you had pointed out how the Totino's girl..." - Oh wow, I've seen this stream many, many times and never even noticed that's what she was saying! But yeah if I crank my volume way up, yep, she does say that (this is what I get for using speakers instead of headphones). That explains why many people in the chat were saying that! And yeah if I had known she said that I could have mentioned it, but I think the focus of the video was more on the stream itself and not the content, if it was I would've also included that amazing moment from Sonic Heroes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mzV6RVR2D8g.html As for why the costume contest was cut, as I said, it was for legal reasons - likely because they didn't have enough permission from the fans coming on stage to show them on stream. There's also a few details I missed out that I had _really_ wished I'd mentioned, but oh well!
23:50 The backing tracks for Jun's S25A/SoS16 performances were the audio track on the DVDs used for the video in the background. Any dead air was there intentionally - notably, SoS12's backing DVD had quite a few silent periods between songs, which Johnny timed to perfection at the time. The 2016 DVD was unusual in having such a long gap between LAL and WIMO, likely because they didn't know how long it would take to set up the encore and intended FOH to skip to the next DVD chapter (set to a few seconds before the start of WIMO) at the appropriate time. Which didn't happen, either because FOH didn't know about the arrangement, or didn't have/hadn't prepared a way to skip forward.
Whoa hey, wait a second - you worked on Summer of Sonic 2016 didn't you? I was thinking "I swear that name is familiar, where have I heard your name before", and then I remembered this video I saw a while back: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vGFoJsxdv7A.html - can I just say it is awesome to hear from someone who worked on these things! I have a different documentary about Crush 40's entire live history (including Summer of Sonic), and, uh, for the record, I know I was being very picky in it and I know it doesn't always come across but I have always loved the Summer of Sonic shows and all the effort that went into them! Anyway, a few things to say! Firstly, yes, I'm absolutely aware that there is supposed to be a gap there, by "FOH didn't have it ready" I meant that they couldn't do what Jun wanted them to do and get that next track on the DVD playing as soon as possible. And yeah I am also aware that he typically uses DVD drives because at Sonic Boom 2013 you can see the DVD drive player loading, and yes I know the backing track would be on the DVD so it's synced to the video - wouldn't exactly make any sense any other way. The bit you said about it being specifically timed though is really interesting - I didn't know that. I always thought they just left a _little_ _bit_ of time on the DVD and told the sound engineers to *pause* at that position, or had some trickery that would make the DVD auto-pause at that position (although I've always doubted that's an actual thing DVDs can communicate to the player), and then the sound engineer just hits play when they need to. I didn't know they literally just straight-up had a whole period of blank time for pauses, I thought the pause _always_ had to be advanced by the sound engineer, that's very interesting. That explains why Johnny says "You didn't stop anything, right?", I swear I've heard that line literally hundreds of times in my life and I've never truly understood it until now, thank you for the extra insight! At some shows Jun has used ProTools instead of a DVD, but that's usually at shows where there's a drummer and bassist, because it gives him the flexibility if one of them can't make it to suddenly say "Alright, let's unmute the drums on the backing track!"
wow thanks a lot! If you know anyone else who might be interested I'd greatly appreciate you letting them know of this video. I don't really care about likes or subscribers on this side channel, just knowing someone watched and enjoyed the video is enough for me!
Great work! ..Maybe it's just me, but i watched this video in the middle of the night, and the combination of the darkness during the event, the buzz, the black background used for the explanations, and the way you talked about the event gave me a "Ghost caught on video" vibe xD
Criminally low view count! It's really cool to see someone break down what the problems were. And subtitles? Based. Though it's a little confusing that none of the speech from the stream is subtitled.
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed it, even now there's some more things I wished I'd added :P By the way, I have another video very similar to this one about Crush 40 and all of the lost videos of their shows, that one's got a very similar presentation style to this one. Not saying you'd be interested and I don't really care too much about views here anyway, since this is just my side channel. And yep, all of my videos here have subtitles... Except one, I need to fix that one up. And yes, none of the stream contents are subbed, I'll add that soon since you've brought it up :P
Holy... I never watched the livestream, and all I heard was that there was an annoying buzzing. I had no idea that THIS MUCH went wrong with it. It is honestly flabbergasting how absurdly wrong this went. To think all of this happened during a time when the series needed to prove itself the most, with both a majority of people simply dismissing Sonic as a "cringe" thing being at an all time high, and fans who weren't that much more optimistic about most of the franchise either. It feels like this series has a curse placed on it. This must've been an exhausting 3 and a half hours for everyone involved. I can feel the livestream staff having a sigh of relief once it was all over.
I can see where you're coming from but I mean, most of the cameramen (for instance) did their job pretty "ok" within the context they were in. Sometimes the camera angles looks really amateurish, because you sometimes get them _adjusting_ _their_ _camera_ live, and it looks really bad. But that's the planner's fault because for some baffling reason the cameramen had zero communication or tally telling them when they were or weren't live on the stream. They all had to guess when it's safe to adjust or not, and that's not their fault, camera adjustments are necessary
Fantastic video. The visual presentation and script work is excellent. Some segments could've been shorter, like the crush40 examples, but overall a great watch.
Yeah... Even when I made it I knew the Crush 40 examples bit was a little long, but hey, at least it gives you a real feel for how some people were feeling watching the stream - the Crush 40 bit of it did go on for a long time!
@@Pokeman79797 Uh... I'm not entirely sure what to say to this. I have _no_ _idea_ what you're talking about and I'd prefer it if you... Didn't call me "babe" it's just... A little weird. Thanks!
Yep, that was certainly a good thing that came from it. Thanks a lot for checking out the video! Fun fact: The person in charge of the live stream is actually one of the programmers who worked on Sonic Mania.
@@SKOT_3 Yep, it's something I really should've mentioned in the video. There are also a few other things I wished I'd explained in the video now, like "why were they were panning the audio back and forth from the left speaker to the right speaker during Jun's solo set", something they did that I didn't even _mention_ was a problem in this video. But it's too late to add it in now. I still think it's a perfectly fine coverage of the whole stream despite one or two things I wish I'd mentioned.
9:58 sorry about the live stream. We apologize for this unsuspecting audio feedback. Will keep this live stream going in just to be clear. We’re just gonna go fix the audio system and probably bash peoples heads so hard to keep them in the high gear so please stay patient.
I think I tuned into the livestream right before Mike imitated the buzzing sound. I was really really annoyed that they cut away from the cast on stage doing a script reading and I only watched for a little while longer but saw the jokes the cast did. The Sonic Mania trailer was on RU-vid thankfully and I watched it there before tuning into the stream. The most beautiful trailer I've ever seen! I kept rewatching it after I blew my voice out from yelling "THEY DID IT! I KNEW IT! CHRISTIAN WHITEHEAD AND STEALTH DID IT!".
11:37 of course that horrible feedback drone came back as a jump, scare, and on top of that the original genesis Sega intro appeared just as it began. Sheesh talk about insult to injury.
ngl i never understood why the costume contest would be cut for legal reasons like...itd obviously be a sonic cosplay contest...and sega owns sonic...so idk what gives especially since nobody truly owns the idea of a cosplay contest
Permission to show the faces of guests so clearly up on stage and permission for some of the Nintendo characters that people _did_ cosplay as at the show.
Well, now you know that that's not how live videos of events like these work :). They don't take sound from the cameras, because it wouldn't sound very good (not to mention, _which_ camera would you take it from, there's 4), the sound is taken from the sound system, almost _always_ - it's the proper way to do things
