In this episode of Lambvinskis Garage, we install a junkyard carburetor we picked up in North Dakota! This particular carburetor came off of a 1960s Era International truck and was 275CFM, but we changed jets to the correct 350CFM. This is by far one of the most worthwhile upgrades you can do to a 318 Poly. It really did wake the truck up! If you are looking to upgrade your Poly without spending a ton of money, this is definitely the way to do it! Sit down, strap in, and enjoy this video!

I'm a huge fan of the 318 Poly. It had tremendous potential. The factory iron heads have been ported and shown to support over 500 horsepower. Their architecture is 90% identical to the LA small block and about 85% identical to the Magnum small block. Any bottom end parts that you can get a hold of for a 318 or 340 to make a stroker will go into the poly. The head was so good that one of the engineers for the hemi saw it as a direct competition to it in small block form. He took that information up to some higher-ups within Chrysler and they killed it. But obviously they kept a lot of the tooling and dimensions and architecture which is how the LA was born from it. The poly head was a far superior design over the LA and Magnum head. The blocks themselves have incredibly thick cylinder castings that can be bored out to extremely large bores. I've seen one article on a board and stroked poly that was 426 cubic inches. They didn't use a poly block though I believe they used a Magnum block. Regardless I've seen many poly block 400-in stroker builds. It's really too bad Chrysler killed them They could have been one amazing small block in the late '60s and '70s had they kept going and improving the design. I can't even imagine how hot a 340 poly would have been.

Agreed.Uncle Tony did a video on exactly the very same things you said.

For sure! From my understanding thr poly mainly died so they could have a smaller v8 to fit in the A body cars but keep the bigger cubes. Either way, these engines are fairly overlooked, but loved by many.

The mechanic working on Mom's 66 Dodge Coronet, thought that tiny Carter carb looked lost in the middle of that wide poly block, also the choke pull-off with the bi-metallic spring in the intake manifold made for hard starting and slow return.

O'Riley's works, need a vacuum can, she needs some things hooked up as it should be. We be watching.

I could imagine how it would have a big air intake difference for the good. Hopefully you are able to get the right one.

Is the Holley 2300 carburetor a compatible upgrade for my 86 Dodge Ram D150 with a 318 LA . It had the original Holley 2280 two barrel and it needs rebuilt or replaced . Just wondering if I can make it work . I’m sure it would be a great improvement over the existing 2 barrel . I’m not even sure what the CFM is in the Holley 2280 that’s in it now ? Maybe 275 / 280 CFM . I called Holley and the tech support guy said they didn’t even have any information on the carburetor, said it was outdated and not in their system. I called Carbs Unlimited, and they said they could rebuild it for $285 … but I’d just go the extra $250 to upgrade to the new Holley 2 barrel 350 CFM carb if it can work .

How about the vacuum advance and the PCV valve? I will have to watch it again and see how you did that. Thanks for sharing your work. I'm going to get busy with my rewatching this then passing it on. Have a great afternoon.

It's not exactly the right carburetor, but it very much works! We checked the timing with a timing light and it advances in the correct range even without the vacuum advance. We can run the PCV to the air cleaner. This isn't the perfect swap, but it's what we had and it made a fantastic upgrade for this truck.

@@LambvinskisGarage I think it is a great upgrade too I was curious to how you were going to do the rest the air cleaner even works for the breathing part, did you cap the port on the distributor? Probably huh?
@LambvinskisGarage

@@johnelliott7375 as far as I know the old man capped the vacuum advance. In reality how many old cars and trucks are running around out there with a vacuum advance that doesn't work anyways? Haha. With the newer carburetors from the late 60s early 70s, they'll have the correct advance and PVC port aswell. We honestly didn't notice this didn't have it until we got it bolted on lol.

Ya know, I've never really looked, I just put gas in it when it needs it, which is less than you'd think lol. Next time I get it out, I'll do an experiment and get back to you!

Noooooooo. The 350 has a very nice power curve, an 800 would smother the poor thing, especially a 2bbl haha.
