I remember back in the seventies all the older guys would trick out their cars, this is the sound you'd hear all day long especially on weekends, Chargers, Roadrunners, GTOs, Chevelle, TransAms, it was great to be a kid back then.
When I was in high school, graduated 1971, all the guys had the cool cars you named, including a Corvette split window and a Dodge SuperBee with the big spoiler. Myself drove a 1965 Buick Riviera with 401, after high school bought new a 1972 Javelin AMX 401 which I still have. It sounds like the '68 Charger in this video.
@Marko Stojcevic glasspacks yes but not really too much on Mopar machines that I remember. That most people I know that had mopars they like to run those thrush turbo mufflers with the duels. Guys that had like Ford's mustangs and cougars and those with like Chevy's used to run the glass packs quite a bit
SHIT, to buy a car like that today you better win the lottery. When they came out you could get one for under or around ten thousand. Now it would be a minimum of a hundred thousand.
Nope, my dad just bought a new Challenger R/T Hemi for about $31000 from the dealer, after trading in his old FJ Cruiser, Chargers and Challengers are cheaper than most other sports cars and muscle cars
For the performance Steve you’re still paying a fairly cheap price .30k is cheap to me.but hey I’m talking pre owned.i don’t have a reason to buy a new car out of the gate .id rather drive a older 2014 v8 mustang and mod it then buy a 2020 mustang ecoboost .which I see a lot of on the road .settlers.damn shame.
My Vietnam veteran Pops treated himself (and me too) to a brand new 1971 Dodge Charger. (Sadly the brakes were faulty). To my young ears that beast growled just like the one in this video. Thanks for the memories!
Not so! I've owned similar cars ('65 Chevy II SS, Toyota Supra) and a Prius. Each has it's purpose. What's your knock on 55 MPG? Some folks can like both types of cars.
They didn’t sound like this back then. You’d get a ticket for for this. This has a hot cam and an aftermarket exhaust. Even with a 426, they didn’t sound anything like this out of the box.
@@paulscanter5562 it depends on where you were at. If you went hot fogging thru town then there’s a chance you’d get a ticket but if you just cruised thru to the other side with a stop at the gas station for a minute and drive like you had common sense then you had nothing to worry about!! I made it thru high school in my road runner without a single ticket but had a hell of a lot of fun also!! It wasn’t as bad as you make it sound
@@wildestcowboy2668 Several. I worked for Chrysler Parts as a Service Rep for seven years of the muscle car era from '66-'73 when I went to work for GM Performance Parts. Both were great jobs. Lots of fun.
@@wildestcowboy2668 That's why I left for GM Performance Parts. Speed's always been my thing since I was a teenager at the drag strips with a hot '57 Chevy.
The old Hemi engines were hard to keep running good. That's why we swapped out a Hemi for a 440 in a 70 GTX. Got top dollar for the Hemi. And wound up with a car that cruised for many troublefree miles.
@@100Aces the classic Fiberglass OEM lift-off 6pak hood was used extensively back in the day. My 69 Superbee came with one. What a pain in the a**, but it was functional, original and cool.
If we could just get every HEMI car all across America fired up simultaneously maybe...just maybe all the environmentalists would die of a heart attack. LOL. Let freedom ring!
Alright whoever had to give this a thumbs down you may want to run a hose from the exhaust on your Prius & go for a long long drive with the windows up tight
How do you explain fart cans making over 500hp ? Lol not fighting with you just asking. Gotta stop the constant hate on tuners. A car guy will always appreciate any built car
The year I got my drivers license we would cruise Lujans drive in on warm summer nights and witness 40 or 50 of these fuel swilling monsters of different brands go to the near by unopened interstate and drag race. The local P.D. would shake their fingers at the participants and usually sit back and enjoy the races till they got a call about a real crime. It was a GREAT.time to be young.
Beautiful 68! I love it. She sounds perfect. Good to see some Mopars on youtube. I am working on a 70 Cuda on my channel, check it out if you can. I just subscribed!
In the 1960's and early 1970's we had a local hangout in my town known as Eat n Park. Just like happy days except the girls did not have roller skates. But they did come out to your car, take your order and bring your food to you. Every evening my brother and I would go to this place because he owned a 1969 Chevelle 396. Muscle cars would cruise through, some would stop and back into their parking space and wait for someone to challenge them to a race. When that happened, most people would follow to a long straight piece of road to race. But after a few years the police started to stake out this road and it was on to a new location for the next race. Wonderful times.
I remember the Eat n Parks. We did the same thing. I had a '70 Charger ,then later I had a '74 and '71. Started at Eat N Park, through the McDonalds then through a pizza place. Put 30 - 40 miles in a night going around in a big circle. Loved every minute of it. Those were some of the best times ever.
As a child that sound to me was a familiar as my Dad's voice ! He owned several classic muscle cars including "The Judge". I was born in the early 70's. I always knew when my Dad was leaving or coming back home.. you could hear that Hemi roaring up the street echoing through the neighborhood, once he had some space he would really "Open up!!" Always knew when he started or was patking those cars... Good memories!!!
I'm so grateful my dad for the last 17 years has raised me on knowledge of cars and motorcycles, and has taken me to the dragstrip, has helped me work on his mustang, and etc. Really cool to truly appreciate and know the beauty of vehicles.
There is No God also you’re looking at it with nostalgia, either way this thing will probably be trailered to events and sit in the back of a guys garage for 40+ years
Dammit yes! My exact memory.. ground shaking!! Fred Castronova of "Custom Body Enterprises" Funny Car fame had a 66 Coronet( black on black with dog dish hubcaps) with a full house Keith Black hemi under the hood. His shop was by my house and you never got tired of hearing that car coming.
@@tl5108 Well maybe that was true, I remember it had the pre 1968 sheet metal I suppose it could have been a 67. My first Mopar was a 68 Road Runner purchased in March 1968.
I laughed when I read this.....my younger brother was always getting me into fights....trouble was the guys he got into it with belonged to the "Future Special Forces Youth Corps" and ate raw meat for breakfast. Boy, some of the gorillas just about killed me. My brother Jim is the best brother a man could ask for.....I guess it was sort of a 'bonding' thing for us. One of the pair of brothers we used to fight with turned out....one of them an Army Ranger and the other one a Green Beret. My brother sure could pick 'em.....I love that guy.
Yes Michael, in 1971 I used to buy gas at a Fina gas station for 24.9 cents a gallon in Abilene TX. I drove a 1970 Trans Am with the 455 HO gas hog engine and loved every mile I drove in it. Cars suck today, they have no personality.
@@rickdaystar477 Besides having a friend with a Charger R/T, I also had a friend that had a '57 Chevy, convertible. It had a 327, holly 4, Hurst transmission, and a glove compartment full of tickets. Ahhh....those were the days.
@@davidk4940 I'll probably get jumped on for this but cars of the day had a different vibe. Straight forward simple power in all steel body cars. Today you can buy performance with the generation of LS motors and plastic body panels,5 computers on board. For me they perform but don't have a soul. I hope you get my point.
I know I’m a little late on the comments but in 2017 I inherited my dads 1970 hemi cuda he bought brand new in 1970. Limelight green with a 426 hemi 4 speed manual tranny. I took my drivers test in this exact same car. Dad took the original carbs off in 1990 and put 2 edelbrock carbs on it. I still have the original carbs and I’m gonna completely rebuild them and put them back on for nostalgia reasons
@@soonerlegendspodcast Wow road test in a Hemi Cuda ! I imagine the DMV road test official must have wished he was riding in that under a more fun oriented occasion..lol You've got a heritage original survivor. Keeping it original is in my opinion the best way to go. Keeping it healthy and safe to drive and not " restoring " it also makes it more valuable. I've seen 6 figure Mopar barn finds at auction that did not run and we're incomplete. Good luck with the Cuda enjoy the ride.
First let me say that I am NOT a rookie, I as a teammate toured most of the southeast racing a very popular "40 Willy's with a 426 Hemi, 60 overbore and a 1/2 inch stroker it was a wonderful thing to hear when it fired up ! But for the Pontiac fans, here is a quick story of my '66 Ford G.T.A. stock 390 engine, never lost a race with the ever so popular G.T. O's or the Cutlas 442's. Both on and off the drag strips around Georgia !
I can’t say I’ve ever heard a better sounding car. Phenomenal job recording the audio too btw, got some headphones with good bass response and GOOD LORD!
@@b80-s9i nothing wrong with fords or Chevy or Dodge they all are good running Vehicles if you take care of them. I had a Ford Lightning 2002 that was built right it was putting on about 1000 horsepower never had a problem never so much as broke a valve spring all depends on how you treat them and maintain them
I remember this Era it was great to see alott of these cars this year and also different brands . 69 Yenco's; Belvedere's ; Cuda's; Satellite's; 70 Chevelle's. Just the sound would draw you to where the sound was coming from and you would go find them. Not driving out in masses like they were when i was growing up. Everyone garages them to much.
I could smell it was running a little rich, you know what I mean... just like my car used to. I could immediately imagine the smell when I heard it. Power. Not that nasty catalytic unleaded smell.
The new Chargers actually are fairly sporty looking, for a 4 door that is, I'm with you on that one though. Why didn't they do a 2 door Charger that looks like an old school Charger. I'm a Transpo guy in the film industry some times, I had some experience with a 68 Charger with a 440 and a pistol grip shifter 727. I have not actually checked it out for myself but I believe they used some footage of me driving it into a big shoot out scene on the 1st or 2nd season of Z-Nation. I also drove it to and from set and back home to it's resting place. Nice driving car for how old it was. The one I drove had an extremely lumpy cam, was satiny hot rod black and had bulls horns for a grill ornament. Fun gig!
@@FJB-522 They wanted to save the 2 door market for the Challenger I am sure..... Not a lot of people buying cars today, but Dodge is having some luck.
My late father had a gold 67 Plymouth GTX with a 426 hemi in his heyday. Showed me the highways up north where they drag raced. He got me into cars and we worked on my first car which was an old Camaro. Good memories hunting the junkyards with him for useful parts on the cheap. I don’t think I ever heard a 426 hemi idle until this video. Thanks for making that happen and reminding me of what a great dad he was.
It's the most American thing you'll hear! I also like the cold starts of Mercedes AMG, and BMW M cars, but eventhough those are way more composed, there's still nothing like the sound or the craziness of an American muscle car!
Absolutely! Can't help but laugh at the people bragging about their supercars that sound like whiney toddlers when they cold start them😂 the classics are the best!
@@themotormechanic3097 I do like the classics better, but exotics aren't ugly sounding. And when a car does 0-60 in less than 3 seconds, most wouldn't care how it sounded
This is what I remember what CARS sounded like. Not a leaf blower, blowing down the road sounding like a bunch of crazy banshees at that time of the month...
I had friend in high school that had a 1969 Dodge Super Bee with that same color combo especially the white super bee stripe across the back end, it was a beautiful car that him and his grandpa restored together it was show condition and his daily driver.👍
