My 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport, was an auto till I swapped in a NV3500 out of a wrecked dodge, whole thing took a few days with little problems.

the crackle is just the engine slowing itself down from the gear its in, ive got a 96 5.2l with a messed up automatic trans that sticks in 2nd and it sounds amazing when i tach it up and let off the gas! but the head gasket blew yesterday. 5.9l 5spd here i come.

you will need to take it to an exhaust shop, unless you can do the welding...get a set of shorty headers then you cut off the stock restrictive cat and put on a dual in single out "2 1/2 magnaflow cat (i got one off ebay for $65 and it was magnaflow) and then mine is "2 1/2 single pipe that ends after the cab

i figured out what was wrong i needed a clutch for a dakota because i have a dakota trans but i need it for a 5.2.... wasnet enough travel for the ram clutcha nd the dakota with 3.9 wont bolt up right, thanks for all the help bro

Hey about to do this swap and have a question about the pilot bearing. Was the crankshaft on your truck already machined to accept it, or did you have to make some kind of modification to run it with the manual transmission? If you could answer this i'm about to do the swap and don't wanna run into issues half way through lol.

Did you have to change your pcm? What all did it require to do it other than the obvious trans,clutch assembly? Did you have to change the t-case and driveshaft?

I believe it's the 4.0:1 first gear and the trans is out of a '96 if I remember correctly. This vid was taken with the 3.55 rear gears, I've since swapped in a whole rear from an '01 with 4.10 gears.

I am highly considering this swap. If you could fill me in on the basics that would be great. Did you have to pull the dash ? How did you do the hydro clutch? Did your auto T-case & driveshafts match up or did you use the donor truck parts. Thanks man.

This is before the 360 swap, the exhaust is headers to a magnaflow y pipe and high flow cat then dumps after the cab

I love the 360! yeah it's very bad on gas but it's so much more fun to drive, watch the new vid? I blew this NV3500 up two weeks after I put the 360 in and had to get another on asap or I would have upgraded to the NV4500

as for the wiring there are two electrical connections going into your auto trans, you'll need to splice into the reverse light wires and connect them to the reverse switch on the 5 speed for you lights. As for the park/neutral switch, I just grounded mine to the frame ( I don't need to push in the clutch to start my truck) The correct way is to run the wire to you clutch pedal though. another electrical thing is make sure you change you Crank Position Sensor

Yeah my buddy has one in his chevy and I'll be getting one when I have the funds lol for now I custom built a pistol grip style shifter with of course, the Hurst Pistol grip handle...this is the stock shifter in this vid tho

@eltragonwithestilo I don't know exactly why, but after the high flow cat was put on it really opened up :) I don't know what you have but I would also assume that it wouldn't crackle as well with an automatic

I done the swap and my tcase bolted right up had to change the driveshaft in the front the rear fit mine dies everytime I go to stop its annoying

I love the way the V8 sounds with a stickshift, I thought Dodge had a factory option of the 5.2L V8 with a 5-speed, instead of converting it out.

yes but there is a Ram specific and Dakota specific trans, they are the same trans but the shifter comes out further back on a Dakota

I have two different rams. One is a 99 ext cab 4x4 360, and the other is a 95' 4x4 318. Both are auto's and i would love to change one of them over to a manual tranny. I just dont know how hard this process is and how expensive it would be. What all did you have to buy or change? I thought about calling some junk yards and looking for a manual tranny and parts from a wrecked Ram. What all would i need? and would i need to buy the computer to match the tranny and truck aswell?

they Crank sensors look the same but they have a different offset to read the flywheel

i have a 96 reg cab short bed 2wd with a 360 and i am highly interested in this swap. Would the NV3500 be the better tranny? or could i go up to the NV4500? and im really interested on how you got your RPM needle blue? any help or advice would be great, thanks. - Manny

The blue needles are done by rubbing off the orange with alcohol and sprayed with a translucent blue from the back side of the needles, all my dash lights are blue also

by the way mine is a 1998 5.9 360 and 4x4 already so i would just really appreciate all the info that i will need mainly WIRING!!! will a 4x4 manual tranny hook to my transfercase it isnt a electronic transfercase it locks in with a regular transfercase shifter...

if you reprogram the ecm to manual it will stop popping nearly as much, it still has the automatic ecm and is not progammed to slow down on the gear.

I’m currently in the process of this swap. Did some research and you can’t “reprogram” this ECM as it’s powertrain is permanent code. Different harness too. Only proper solution is to change the wire harness and ecm to that of a manual. From what I’ve found, it’s a million times better to just source your parts from a manual truck then buy it individually from websites. No one is selling the wire harness or ecm for a manual right now

I wouldn't put it in a sports car, they put them in heavy truck for a reason, but that's up to you...I have 4.10's with 33's and I'm at 2000rpm at 60mph, and I can just start in second gear...first gear in 4low I can get out and walk faster, but it will pull anything!

As for the cost, I found a truck around here and got everything for $300, and I pulled it all myself. You can do it, you just need a 5.9 flywheel. I've explain everything else in older posts, unless you have a specific question.

Has your transmission held up to the 360? I have a 318 w/ the Nv3500 in mine and was concerned about building the motor at all because of what I've read about the transmission not being able to handle the additional torque.

Dalton Reid Look up reviews online of people who have put the nv3500 to the test. They are quite stout and underrated. If you don't do any "money shifts" and just have a good idea how to drive in general a healthy nv3500 will do just fine behind a built 318. I've had several nv3500's over the years in different applications. Had a cammed lifted 5.7 s10 on propane with the nv3500, never any problems even in 4x4 spinning the 33's.

I haven't seen many at all, and Yes just make sure you get a transfer case from a 5 speed truck..If the transfer case come from an auto you'll need to change the input shaft

@HurstRam There's a couple 1500 5 speeds running around my area. ( 2 extended cab 4x4's) & one reg. cab 4x4. I've been looking for a parts truck since I first contacted you. No luck. Very hard to find.

Yeah I grounded mine also, I had it wired to a push button but that got old fast....If you're beating daytona chargers I assume you have a reg cab short bed 2wd?

Wanna make sure I have this right. I need: tcase 5 speed, master, slave, manual pedals, clutch, flywheel. And it runs and drives fine? With an auto ecu?

Also need a 5spd Crank Sensor, after a while of driving it it kept wanting to stall out at stops, I found a 5spd PCM and it fixed the problem, the pcm I got is still for a 5.2 and I have a 5.9 it runs fine. When you change the PCM you must also change out the gauge cluster from the same truck, the cluster and pcm go together if you don't it wont run right. or get the PCM flashed at the dealer

Funny that you ask because I was just looking at the Hurst short throw shifter, I'll be getting that soon. I can shift well, this is a 4x4 truck not a race car, I'll have a new vid soon.

No need to pull the dash... There are two different hydros, '94-'97 and '98-'01 you need whatever one your truck is because one twists into the firewall and one bolts in... I used the donor t-case but I believe you can use the auto one if you change the input shaft... as far as driveshafts, I used my old auto one for the rear and haven't gotten the front one in yet due to two different gear ratios my rear is 4.10 and front still 3.55 but I think you may need the manual front shaft...

i just swaped a nv3500 into my 5.2 auto 46re i finished everthing its just down to the wires how do you ground the nuetrel safety wire and what wire is it?

There should be wires coming off the clutch pedal and NS wire goes to it, I just grounded mine so I don't have to press the clutch in to start it. I believe the NS wire is the center wire on the connector that went into the auto trans. and one of those three wires is for your reverse lights

It was very simple, I did it in a weekend by myself and some jacks, not safe but effective :) and I found a donor truck that I picked up for $400 and bought a new clutch...more info in older comments/posts, all the info is there

check older posts I might be missing something but you'll need 1. NV3500 transmission 2. brake and clutch pedal assembly 3. flywheel, 318 and 360 use different flywheels 4. pilot bearing 5. clutch hydraulics, '94-'97 and '98-'01 6. front drive shaft if it's 4x4, the auto rear ds will work 7. manual transfer case, auto uses a different input shaft 8. need to ground the park neutral wire if using a auto computer 9. manual crank position sensor, auto one will not work 10. interior trim

@GarageCrazy No, but you need to ground the park/neutral wire so you can start the truck, or put it to a switch..I like not having to put the clutch in to start my truck. But, maybe the truck would run better with a 5 speed computer just because now my CEL is on since its not reading the auto anymore..just took the bulb out :x

ok i finished everything started up the truck and it runs as it should, when the truck iis off i can change gears and all but when i start it up i cannt get it into any gear at all and when i try to put it in reverse it will make grinding noise and wont go in, im thinking its not bled enough but why would it not be bled enough if it worked with the dakota clutch and flywheel? thanks any help will help alot i need my truck havent been able to drive for coupl e mounths now thanks man

Best thing to do is find a donor truck, I spent 300 on everything and thats pretty cheap I think...You will need Transmission, transfer case, pedals, clutch, pressure plate, a 5.9 flywheel which I believe are like $300 alone I guess cuz they're rare, and a hydro setup from a '98 - '01 truck, and a hole in the floor. as for the ecm you need to ground the neutral park wire or put it to a switch so you can start the truck.

I''ve exlpianed what will be needed, just read older posts...and I didn't change my computer, but It might have more power if I did? As for the 360 you will need a 360 flywheel, and I believe factory 360/5 speed combos came with the NV4500. The 3500 should hold up as long as you don't beat on it :) wich will be hard to do

No, an auto t-case wont bolt up to the 5 speed, you'd have to change the input shaft on the t-case, I was lucky and got mine together. Another thing about the electronics is that without having a 5.9 5spd computer you CEL will come on and stay on because of the missing auto trans, other than that my truck runs great and I'm even still using the 5.2 auto computer

Take the colum cover off and hammer the pin out that holds the shifter...just need to keep it in park so you can turn the key and take it out, 318..I want to do a 4BT swap with a NV5600 but thats not anywhere in the near future lol

trucks all done but when it runs it runs bad, it will shake, and backfire a little when i bought the trans it was from a 97 dakota 3.9 i have a 5.2 and he told me it was swapable and i dont think it really is and i think this is why my truck is running bad, do you think its the flywheel?

5.2 and 5.9 flywheels are different you need to have the one for whatever engine you have or it will vibrate, one is externally balanced the other in internally balanced. What's wrong with the speedo?

yea im guessing its the flywheel making the speedo read weird the spedo will work but it will vibrate and go up and down

Shorty headers, magnaflow high flow cat, "2 1/2 single pipe that ends at the back of the cab...no muffler :) I'm going to go dual soon with a magnaflow dual in dual out cat and bring the pipes out the back.

If you want to beat on it put in a NV4500, dodge never made a 360/NV3500 combo because the 360 exceeds the NV3500s torque specs,

haha yeah check out my other video, "vinces burnout with the 360", the trans lasted 2 for two weeks but I really beat on it as you'll see...couldn't afford the NV4500 so I put another 3500 in it and just take it easy, it's also running Hankook Dynapro MT's 35's now
