In this video I have a look at a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins that came in with a short list of things that stopped working. They include but are not limited to the radio, intermittent wipers, the power seat, dash lights, marker lights, and dome lights. Customer told me it had been a long time sense they last worked. -Enjoy!

It is a tricky thing.... When you get a sanario like this that the solution is simple enough. When I am in this position I usually charge the straight time usually 15-20min and material which can or not include lunch for the day. End of the day it is what it is... Great video.

This made me smile. Several years ago my son bought a used '99 3500 with "previous owner extra wiring". That very same fuse was the issue and the behavior of the foglamp-indicator was my clue. His truck's fuse was not missing however; it was "partially blown". What I mean by that is low-current functions worked but nothing high current. The fuse had become an intermittent high resistance short. I am really enjoying your content.

I am one of those guys who likes the mysteries of 12vdc circuitry. I have a friend who knows household wiring, but has a very hard time with automotive electric. The one that came to mind when watching this video is way back in the early eighties. A lady brought her little Ford to the station with headlight trouble. Before me, some genius had run a 12ga wire from the back of the left headlight, through the engine compartment, out the corner of the hood, in through the door opening and into the fusebox. Holy crap! Anyway, I took Dr, Frankenstein's pigtail out and began the diagnosis. It was a bit odd. Turn on the headlights and they were on high beam and wouldn't switch to low, despite the switch physically operating normally. The switches in those cars are extremely durable and it wasn't a very old car. I decided to unplug the headlights and see what happened with the switch. Voilà. The switch still did the same, but now, the high beam indicator on the dash would go off and on with the switch actuations. I plugged in the passenger side bulb and it functioned normally. I plugged in the driver's side bulb and the malfunction came back. I checked the circuits at the plug and they were also normal. That put the problem inside the sealed beam bulb. I put in a new bulb and the system was fixed. We charged an hour of labor and the price of the bulb. The lady was ecstatic that first, I was able to find out what was actually wrong and second, that the dire predictions from the previous actors were totally out in left field. Mostly, she was happy that our cost was so low. Labor rate was much lower then and the bulb was about $7 as I recall. It was the larger sized rectangular sealed beam that functioned as both high and low beam with two filaments. What had happened is that one filament broke at the stem and the end fell onto the other filament, crossing the circuits inside the bulb. I showed her the bulb and what to look for. She took it with her to go get her money back from the other guy. I had another job there in which the main mechanic screwed a customer who ended up stuck about twenty miles from the station. I took the tow truck and retrieved the stalled dually pickup truck and brought to back to the station. I spent three hours in the night, diagnosing and fixing the problem that slapped the mechanic in the face, yet he chose to ignore it. Bad rocker switch on the dash that switched fuel tanks and gauges. Dipshit put a new fuel pump on the engine and when it didn't pump fuel, he added fuel to the empty tank. Two and a half gallons, enough to get into the downtown area of Phoenix. I found the defective switch and since I told the customer I would do everything I could to fix his truck, I pulled the switch apart and corrected the problem with the internal contacts, fixing it, rather than waiting to get a new one from the dealer. I also covered for the idiot which led to me being able to humiliate him when discussing the situation with the boss.

Eric truly like the way you have been explaining very clearly the use of the electrical schematics. Have been teaching myself how to read and understand them but its nice to see you use them and know that how I'm interpreting them is correct. Worked with mechanical prints my whole life but am now very interested in electrical schematics because of today's automotive complexities. I have the tools just need to improve my understanding and you are a big help. thanks much.❤️️

It helps that Chrysler listened to the techs quite a few years ago and made the wiring diagrams a lot simpler and easier to read and understand. Basically, the power source is at the top, and the grounds are at the bottom. The diagrams also have clickable links, clicking on a connector will give you options like connector view, pinout view, etc. So much easier and quicker than having to search thru everything to find what you're looking for.

For DIY repair info & wiring diagrams, also check you local library. Many of them already have paid subscriptions to the professional repair information that Eric mentions in this video. Some library's allow people to log in from home to get this information, while other libraries require you come to their location to use those repair databases (really depends on who they have their subscriptions thru and what their terms-of-use are for library users). If your local library does not have any access to current repair information, then put in a request that they add it.

I've watched a lot of your videos and learned a lot from you! I appreciate your work and enjoy your videos. I've been trying to figure out this 2004 Dodge Stratus with a 2.4. Got it dirt cheap. Engine light was on, but ran pretty good... until the light started flashing and it died. Checked oil, was bone dry! Leaked out all oil through spark plug tubes. Added oil of course, got it home. Changed the valve cover gasket and tube seals, changed spark plugs, cleaned everything up, put it back together.. crank but no start. Tried to check compression but it didn't show much. Hooked up code reader, no connection to PCM. Got some sea foam and soaked the pistons overnight... started, but barely ran and makes noise, knocking, etc. Checked injector ohms, showed 12 ohms across, but reference voltage reads only 4+ volts on connectors, and coil connection reads even less. I was under the impression that coil and injectors should show 12v, but I'm not sure if that's only if it's running or something? Gonna drain the oil and add fresh oil with Restore, and see if I can get it to run some more... but I was wondering if I should run a 12v jumper wire to the coil first and maybe to the injectors also? Any suggestions? I saw you had some success with Restore. Hoping my compression increases at least, but I obviously have some electrical issues. I kind of suspect the PCM is bad, but I've seen where bad sensors can pull the voltage down... so not sure yet. I did get a 5v reference from a few sensors, but I haven't tested them all yet, like the cam and crank... I did check the fuses, and one was blown inside the cab for the radio and something else (I thought for the PCM) but the radio didn't come on and the OBD connector is still dead. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :) Keep up the great work!

I had a friend bring me his 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. It had been to a local shop, his headlights weren't working. They quoted him a hefty price for the directional / high beam wand , which was visibly broken. He was low on cash and the truck had a lot of mileage. So I got a cheapo Chinese replacement from E Bay. Installed it, it was an easy 15 minute job, and the head lights still weren't working. Upon checking the fuse, which was one of those box types, I discovered it was missing. Apparently they forgot to put it back.

That same 50 amp fuse powers the seat belt module which is no longer available but will run the battery down. I have worked on a couple where they pulled it for that reason and couldn't figure out why everything quit. I have watched several videos where people have went through all kinds of crap to get the belts going. I don't remember wire colors from when I did repairs but you simply unplug the module under the seat one of the wires is a keyed hot wire and make a jumper wire from that to the seat belt solenoid on each side, unlocks when key is on and locks with key off no more short.

I remember back in 2007, my 1995 Jeep Cherokee developed a strange issue. My headlights would work but the running lights and dash lights would not unless I gradually eased the headlight switch to the "sweet" spot in between the headlights and marker lights position. I replaced the headlight switch to no avail, and warrantied it out at least twice more, continually believing that the headlight switch was to blame. It turned out that the fuse for the running lights had blown, and that the headlights run off of circuit breakers as a fail safe! For some reason, having the head light switch positioned just right in-between headlights and marker lights allowed the marker lights to grab power off of the headlight's circuit breakers as well.

With multiple loads on multiple circuits, common power and body ground from the battery would have been my first thought, fuses would be next, ignition switch and its controlled aux relay(s) third and fourth. I can't imagine a short sufficient to make a 50A fuse evaporate. My guess is when making one those badly done extra wire mods, the fuse was temporarily removed and plugged into an unused soccket. For DIYers, one vehicle-specific factory shop manual typically costs less than a month of Mitchell service.

Eric O and the case of the missing fuse. Nice. A shop that was a parts cannon would have told him he needed a new truck LOL

I usually get the full FSM (Factory Service Manual) for everything I own, and it includes wiring diagrams. Do these paid services offer anything extra that is not in the FSM. If you only service your own cars to seems a lot cheaper to buy the FSM download.

Most services also have a private "forum style" setup where technicians can post pattern failures, more efficient ways to perform a procedure, etc. Ex: I was at a JOB INTERVIEW on Friday for a position at used car dealership and the Service Manager expressed frustration that there was a vehicle that had been sitting clogging up a bay for a few weeks/2 months with a "No Crank, No Start, No Comm" issue and how he needed more techs period. I asked/offered to look at it, and he gave me permission with the caveat that he couldn't pay me. I countered with the fact that I love puzzles and wouldn't mind looking at it. Pulled codes and had comm with some of the modules but not the TCM or PCM, looked at wiring diagrams with Identifix (what that shop subscribes to) and wound up logging into Mitchell ProDemand with my school info as I had a hard time reading/understanding the Identifix diagrams. Pulled power distribution wiring diagram, data lines diagram, starting diagram, and TIPM wiring diagram and noted comments that corresponded to the symptoms on this vehicle. Based on that and after what felt like forever, I found the hidden relay box behind the driver's headlamp with corroded relays to the point where the prongs had broken off of one. Told the SM, and he expressed thanks. I asked him how long it took (I felt it had been 2 or more hours) and he said "An hour to an hour and a half." He told me to get the paper application back to him and said "We have a whole lot worth of puzzles for you, even if you can't start until May."

The customer might have been testing your honesty. A missing fuse is suspect, almost like a testing failure, just to see how honest your service center is. However, you passed with flying colors, Eric! Good show!

Every time I catch a job like that, I look around for the hidden camera. Had one just yesterday. Guy’s waiting for the shop to open, it’s 15 degrees outside and the drivers window is half-open and won’t close. I bring it inside and find none of the windows work from any of the switches. I pull out the master switch to start my diag and find the connector is unplugged. I plug it back in, it locks into place securely and *BOOM* everything works! I couldn’t see how it could unplug itself, so I start looking around for the camera. My shop uses Mitchell and I absolutely HATE it! One would think, if you’re paying a monthly subscription fee, the information would be better/more complete. Mitchell is the Scotty Kilmer of automotive information.

Offtopic: Bought the official SMA coffe mug, very pleased about the size. But apparently it was a GM part, (made in China), How many miles (cups of coffee do you think it can handle? You should do more german cars, have been a Audi owner for 14 years (100 C4, A4 B6, A8 D4) Audi only left me walking ones, dead fuel pump on the A4, and please don't compare Audi to VW, they are worlds apart. Love this channel! Greetings from Norway.

some of the newer commercial vehicles have built in "ACCY" connectors where you can plug in any accessory such as plow equipment controls, spot lights, radios, etc. without having to modify or adapt.

Mitchell 1 does have the DIY’r. I use it on my vehicles. With taxes was about $45 for 4 years. Well worth it. Haynes manuals are $25-$30 and show nearly nothing these days.

He was probably testing to see if you were honest or not. A single fuse, easy to diagnose. Doesn't cost a ton to fix and now you know you weren't upsold on a whole rewire job.

I can't help myself. I always check all the fuses first. (a 80s thing, i think) now, with a power probe, which is handy, cuz u can see low volt circuits. I've been burned by a missing fuse a couple of times, but learned to keep my eye out for that.
@Cheepchipsable
@Cheepchipsable 5 лет назад
It's a simple thing you can do quickly. The real problem starts when the fuse keeps blowing, but at least it narrows down the circuit. Sometimes fuses do blow, they would have a lifespan or are simply poorly made, but they shouldn't blow on a regular basis. Can't agree with the "missing fuses are common" argument, because these fuses are clearly marked, and are dedicated, not like a panel which has no guide to follow. Sometimes people remove a fust to turn something off that won't switch off like it should. Had a car where the radio didn't work - discovered missing fuse only to discover that the radio would now not turn off. turns out it had a faulty on/off switch on the radio itself.

Criticism? I am simply amazed by your talents and logical approach towards working on vehicles. If the owner takes that truck to another mechanic, trust me the first thing would be to pull the dash out or spicing wires!! Also saw how you found an electrical error (no power to cam sensor) on a Chevy van. Thank you!

I bet this vehicle owner wired his plow to that circuit, blew the fuse, took it out to replace it sometime last year and simply forgot to do it. Once the vehicle owner starts plowing snow with all of his accessories turned on, he will be back.

now that could very well be, something in the plow light harness/etc. or they overloaded that feed with the magical "add-a-tap" fuse adapters (inside fuse box), after seeing them plugged in with 20 amp fuses stuffed in....... probably find they're all on that circuit if he checked.
@jae9843
@jae9843 5 лет назад
I think that crossed a lot of our minds, but how do you forget to replace a main fuse like that? None of the convenience functions in their cabin were working, so they'd be reminded of the missing fuse every time they got in and out of the truck. It'd be one thing if it was a small fuse for say the rear defroster or sunroof or whatever that'd be very easy to forget until you need it, but forgetting to replace a 50A that feeds a bunch of stuff (to the point where you take it to a shop) seems implausible to me. My money is still on someone or someones testing SMA's honesty and competency.

My wifes car hasn't had a working blower motor for months. Due to other wiring issues with the car i thought it needed a power distribution box. Put a fuse in it today and it started working
@uzaiyaro

I hope that’s a proper fusible link! It should very well be, and they are used on circuits that are allowed or expected to have very high loads for a short period of time, for example both the thermo fans in my car are on fusible links. Fusible links can be denoted by having a big old nugget of metal in the middle of them under a window. I’m sure you know this as a mechanic but I just thought I’d mention this for other folks. You need to put a fusible link in if that’s what came out, because if you just stick a fuse in there, it’ll constantly trip although there is nothing actually wrong with the circuit.

This is why my dad has a 1994 and 1999 ford explorer. The '94 has the type of problems you'd expect (AC, Suspension wear, brakes and brake lines(lines were replaced in October and pads in November). The fuel pump I think is starting to fail because it doesn't want to fire, just crank, but it starts more than not and it runs like a champ. It has ~127,000 miles and has never had an engine issue. It's just more worn is all.
