A Quebec man has been charged after allegedly importing thousands of counterfeit Toonies from China.
It is believed to be the largest bust of its kind in Canadian history, and if convicted, he could spend up to 14 years in prison.
Touria Izri explains how a Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer caught on to the smuggling scheme and why experts believe there could be millions more of these bogus coins in circulation.

I was able to catch one of these when I worked in retail. When I was bored I would always fidget by clapping 2 toonies together so I was very familiar with the sound of a real toonie. My coworker had accepted one these fakes from a customer at the cash and I instantly knew it was fake when I banged it against a real toonie. Familiarize yourself with the sound and you will always be able to spot these.

Of course they don't care. They want people to stop using coins and bills and just use debit and credit. It's cheaper for the government and it is easier for retailers to compile, analyze and sell your data. The retailers and service providers are also in love with tipping options on these new payment apps - who knows if these tips even make it to the employees? Already some stores won't accept cash. Right now, I just say 'thank you' and leave. I'm sure in a few short years I won't be able to buy anything with cash.

A college told me once that what these folks would do is put a real toonie at each end of a roll of coins and the other twenty three were counterfeits. Then they cash a few in at various banks around town. The 2012 toonies weren't all that secure, however toonies after 2013 - I believe - strengthened the security with a virtual image in the grill at the top of the coin on the reverse (tails side), the laser mark micro engraved maple leafs in the indents at the bottom of the coin on the reverse and the edge lettering of "Canada" and "Two Dollars" on the coin. I disagree the comment about is the mint going to "wake up". They wouldn't have added all these security features ten years ago if they didn't want to improve the security. Although the person with the coin in their hands do have to check the coin. I will admit there wasn't much of a fanfare when the new toonies or the polymer notes were released. Australia had commercials on each of their newly designed notes. Radio silence from the Mint and the Bank of Canada. They need more communications - and a trip to their website doesn't cut it.

It increases inflation because you're adding more currency into the system. Quantitative easing or legal counterfeiting is the same and creates similar results. I’ll bet most of this never gets caught, even by the banks. It probably just remains in circulation. It kind of illustrates that money isn’t really worth anything. It only has value because we all agree it does. If those twonies made it past the CBSA I’d bet that it would have been in regular circulation for years to come with no one noticing unless they tried to take it to a coin store.

@jamesphillips2285 5 месяцев назад
@@johnnyshanksalot8358 If CERB makes the prices of essential goods skyrocket: that means that a lot of people were not getting essential goods. The price of luxury goods does not matter much. The wealthy will always have enough extra income to flaunt their wealth if they choose to. There is a lot more price flexibility built into luxury goods. The reason house prices are rising so much is because people are using land as a tax shelter. This produces a market failure because there is no mechanism to lower land prices. The normal market mechanism to lower prices (increased supply) does not exist. The "Free market" solution to this problem is actually land value taxes. If such taxes are high enough to discourage land banking: they can be used to fund basic income, similar to CERB (CERB was NOT basic income; tied to employment insurance.)
