Right on! I can't say I'll never want to get into them, but I just don't feel the need at this point. I had enough years before the became a fad that it would be an adjustment, and I think they're mostly for people that build from fancy plywood.
Pocket hole jigs work for all kinds of stuff and are way cleaner. I have done what you did before. I have a nice one now. I didn't starting out. The little single one he listed it the bomb for fixing furniture. Mostly legs. Especially heavy things that have little wooden feet poorly attached that someone has just "slid" on the carpet ripping it off. A well places block and a few pocket screws with some glue is a good thing. Been there and done that.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! I'm a big @731woodworks fan, but I don't think I'm ever going to be able to watch Matt in the same way! Haha thanks for the laughs!
I don't mean any harm, but I appreciate what you're saying. In the end, I come to RU-vid to learn, but more to be entertained. And I'm consistently entertained by his videos.
You should get some cardboard boxes and paint them Festool green and white while you're at it. You're not a real woodworker unless you have a stack of systainers.
You had me smiling the whole video. That was fun I love 731 WoodWorks and I love your channel also. I’m an officer like Mr 731 was and we don’t necessarily get to smile that much in our line of work. It’s great to sit down and watch the girls and yours lite hearted videos. Keep up the great work.
4:47 Hell no! I may not be one for fishing, but if I catch a fish, I ain't letting that thing go! (Unless it's undersized. A fish is not worth the jail time!)
Hahahha this was a great video, I watch those videos too. And I dont think hes generally wrong about tools, but I watch one of the videos, add the things I would like to the cart, look at the $300 cart. Go you know I get that down, I will take out the things I dont really need. Next thing I know the cart is empty ready for me to watch the next video. But in fairness some of the stuff in the those kind of videos could be handy and I would like/use. Just alot of times I go Id rather go buy some cool wood and make something instead lol
Thank you for saying the things a lot of us think. Recently I saw a video by Cam at Blacktail Studios where he shows how much money he made from just 5 RU-vid videos. It was an embarrassingly huge amount of money. If you're making that kind of money, of course you can buy ALL the fun to have gadgets. Me, not so much. About every three months I allow myself to buy a new tool as long as it is not too expensive. So once again, thanks for speaking for a lot of us.
I saw that video. I've always appreciated how open Cam is about that stuff. And you have a strong point, but I think there's fun to be had on any budget.
@@worstworkshop I agree. Cam is very forthright and honest, and that very honesty is one of the most engaging aspects of his videos. Well, that and his amazing skill set. And as many, many woodworkers before me have said, "A bad day in the shop beats a good day anywhere else." 🙂
Well uh… ummmmm…. I’m not sure what to say… 😂. Love my Mighty Matt! Dude that was funny!!! Thanks for some light hearted laugh’s. The Swiss Army knife thing was funny! I do love my pocket hole jig though.
Love the channel, down to Earth and totally relatable. Yet another awesome video. I fully agree with you on each of those tools 731 listed. I could disagree on the the pocket hole jig, especially if you have joinery skills in your pocket. It is better to save the money and spend it on the kids, they're expensive and get more expensive as they get older. Full disclosure: I really enjoy my Kreg pocket hole system. I think my first, single-holed, Kreg pocket hole jig was $15, but that was many years ago. I used it till I could save up for a bigger kit.
Here's my real thoughts. If you're a hobbyist, you should do what's fun. If that's pocket holes, awesome. If not, cool. I've never had a good jig, so I'm kind of ambivalent, but I do enjoy traditional joinery.
LMAO! When folks start out building things they generally can't afford the expensive tools shown on so many channels here. Thing is, unless you are a professional you probably don't need the expensive tools. There are plenty of good quality tools at lower price points, used/antique tools etc. It can be similar to an occasional mechanic buying Snap-On stuff.
@@worstworkshop LOL - yeah, I've been caught like that too! My rule is that if I have to buy a new tool I buy a cheap one first. If I find I use said tool at least 3 times in a year (or just like it), I upgrade to a better quality version.
"All you have to do is take your cheap square and compare it to enough other cheap things." There are some really dark days where I find myself doing something like this, often without the "cheap" parts.
I think it's The Wood Whisperer that's always saying we're not making rocket ships, and furniture only needs to be so square. With the cheap squares, the problem is usually going to be bad materials (which you can spot at a glance) or inconsistency. And that can be checked pretty easily. But once you know it's square, it doesn't matter if it cost $3 or a hundred.
@@worstworkshop Well, I will say there is one thing to remember, and it comes from an expensive square that was a problem: It may be square today but it may not be square tomorrow. This particular square twice (before I gave up on it) moved enough to be off-square despite the screws attaching it being seemingly still tight, and I had to throw away pieces on two projects because of this. Screws loosen, skinny things bend, wood gets bumped up and metal gets dinged and can bulge. Just because I trust something is square today doesn't mean it is true tomorrow.
I am new to watching woodworking shows so I am fresh to the channel you are talking about. I started my day watching him and the first couple videos were positive and he seems to be a very nice guy so I was feeling good about the channel and gave it a subscribe. After a couple more videos started to hear him talking about tool brands I never heard of and thought nothing of it. I have been in the trades for over 10 years mostly plumbing so I understand quality tools make a difference but you don’t always need the most expensive tool if you’re not going to use them all the time and what I got is plenty good and probably won’t need to invest in anything else. Then his Tumu video came out. I have never really noticed how much of a tool snob this guy was until his video bashing that site. This tape is to sticky he said that is when I unsubscribed he went from being a nice guy to a salesman of high end tools. This tool is just as good as the original design they clearly stole but don’t buy it because its not that brand. Never heard of wood pecker before his videos so I guess it is doing a good job it did put a couple new tools on my radar. Problem is now i affiliate it to a snobby RU-vid channel. I enjoyed your video poking fun at 731 I am going to try some of your other videos and possibly you will get the slot that is empty because he thinks everyone needs a 120$ square. I don’t plan on building a grand piano and sure the square I already have is good enough. Just because its not red doesn’t mean it won’t work the same. Oh the power tools he uses are ugly I don’t care how much they cost they are over priced because the dust collection and I think the flying saw dust is part of the experience. Maybe thats just me but I don’t collect the dust I enjoy the dust. Loved the kids in your video. There’s a nail in this board, oh just don’t carry it at that part. Classic #1 DAD coffee mug moment.
Thanks so much for letting me in on your thought process. I've been a fan of 731 Woodworks for a long time, and I think he's legitimately a good guy. Certainly a bit of a tool snob, but I think he's gotten used to a very high standard. Woodpecker is a top-tier premium brand for woodworking. As a plumber, you understand that paying a lot of money for a simple tool you use over and over every day for twenty years or more is a good investment, if you have the money. I don't. Temu is a hot ball of controversy. Some of their stuff is great, and some is awful. Bad labor practices? Sure, but probably no worse than Harbor Freight, or Apple, for that matter. I try not to buy new tools if I have another option. Usually a jig or a homemade tool works if you have the time. And my kids are just amazing. I love them a ton.
I, like so many other commentators on here, also unsubscribed to 731 many months ago. Before he grew the beard it was great. I think the last video I watched was about cnc projects or something. Lost all interest then. Oh well, I get the point of your video tho, pretty funny. Let it go, 😆.
I think most people understand that if you change what you're doing, you're going to lose some of your audience, and gain others. It's always a tough choice. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@worstworkshopYeah, you make some valid points. Only thing on this list worth having is the right angle attachment and pocket hole jig. Dowels are better but pocket holes come in handy sometimes
Sorry Matt, tired of your marketing channel. There are plenty of channels showing how to make cool beginner projects using very basic hand tools. When I’m trying to make a bird house I don’t need a review of 10 of your favorite routers or jig saws. Had to un sub.
oh.. there's way more problems with him than that. I noticed it immediately the first time I ever saw his channel that he uh.. lets just say he's not from wester tennessee.
I quit watching 731 a while ago because i got tired of all the videos about SHOPPING. I want my time making stuff to be about MAKING stuff, not BUYING stuff. I put comments asking him to focus on developing skills with a few essential common tools and saw no atempt to make any difference. I figure this youtube thing is just all about the money for many people on here. There are successful people on youtube that dont discuss buying stuff AT ALL.
It's a big topic to cover, and different creators have different standards. I won't fault a man for running a business well, especially because I'm sure he'd rather be making things. But he's giving the market what it demands.
That was Awesome man, really appreciate the laughs! I don’t fault 731 “tool works” 😂 mans gotta make a living. A man would have to be deaf, dumb and blind, which I am pretty close to being at my age now. not to notice that he is kind of a sellout. Reckon it might be easier than building which is what I’ve been doing since I was a child. Anyhow you got me to click the subscribe button, good job! Keep em coming
I believe 731 woodwork's is more of a sales person than a carpenter, Most of the items he promotes are just more of the same stuff he already promoted. I am a 70 year old retired Navy vet and try to find the cheapest price on anything I buy for woodworking, it does not matter who made it and if it can be done without the tool why buy it?
I figure if you have the money, a lot of these things can make it easier and faster. If you're a pro on a schedule, the investment usually pays itself off pretty well. For guys like you and me, it's often a different story.
Just found you and I have to say, this is the daddest of woodworking channels! Instant sub! Love how you bring your girls into the work. I showed mine all sorts of things from fixing cars to fixing up the house.
I honestly think when Matt went full time, he sold his Soul to youtube, sponsorship, and affiliate marketing. I know he would say, "Haters gonna hate" I miss the days of hey im going to build something. Check out how I do it. Now his channel is fluff... buy this thing you don't need to make this thing... Don't get me wrong, I like the man. I like his morale and his Faith, I just skip over most of the"tools you don't need"
I know a lot of people feel that way, and I'm sure Matt does too. I legitimately think he's a good guy trying to run a business and take care of his family. I watch his videos for the simple reason that I enjoy them.
Thanks for another great video! Us men tend to spend a whole lot to make mostly ugly birdhouses. Your girls are great and seem to have appropriate expressions for the situations. Keep the videos coming and please continue to exploit your source of child labor.
I ended up unsubscribing to 731 because he turned into a shill machine. I get it. He's not the first person I unsubscribed to for the same reason. Full time on You Tube requires users to generate content consistently. Multiple woodworkers have talked about how project videos take longer to film/produce and get fewer clicks.
Well, he does still make stuff. He’s had 2 build videos post in the last 2 months which is on par with every other big “woodworking” YT channel, and he’s put out 2-10+ times more content than every other woodworking channel. But that’s none of my business.
He did but can't really blame him, money talk. I rarely watch his video anymore, it's not what it used to be and what got him all the subscribers. I hope he stay successful, I'm just not interested.
Thanks for nothin brother. My 4 year old couldn’t even move a single 3/4” sheet of plywood 1 stinkin inch🤨 he got pissed off and instead wasted half a bottle of titebond on his “art”. You’ve deceived me for the last time…. I await your next video. Go after John Malecki 🤘🔥🤘
My kids had already grown up and moved out before I started woodworking, so I was forced to get one of those gator lift things. When they were little I was able to have them as cheap labor so the "Dad! There are NAILS in the BOARD!" "Then don't pick it up by that part" had me on the floor rolling, especially since I've actually used the "don't pick it up by that part" reply. Just priceless.
Two pieces of scrape plywood, one piece of scrap 2x4 and two 3/8th bolts with nuts and washers to hold it all together. Well under $30. Probably under $5 for those of us with grown children. I figure in a few years the grandchildren can backfill the grown kids too!
No you have it rite, 731 tool works! I have not seen him make anything in like 2 years! As he said” those videos don’t get a whole lot of views so i don’t show them” . Iam shore he dose do wood work I just have not seen it in a long time, but like a lot of people I still watch the videos he puts out.
Love your stuff, and especially the two young stars of your show! Mine are teens, and I miss those ages. Not to mention, wise thoughts about what "every woodworker [really] needs" (or doesn't) today.
So good to see a shop full of used equipment and repurposed furniture. As a poor excuse for a self-taught woodworker, I'm encouraged. My tablesaw is a 1970's era Craftsman with no safety features. Couldn't even put a riving knife on it if I wanted to. Was a "gift" from my father-in-law, who i can only assume is trying to kill me...I'm a girldad to two myself, and some of my happiest times are working with them on projects. Keep it up, sir.
I've had three old Craftsman table saws. None have riving knives, but at least the one I'm using now can have a splitter. My first one couldn't even have one of those.
@worstworkshop I think the microjig splitter system will work for mine. That old thing has been put through it. At one point, the power switch must have failed so someone threw a light switch on the side for power.. Ah, the joys of used tools... Stay cool. Should be better in DFW now. I'm in San Antonio and it's been tolerable these past couple of weeks. Hope you can enjoy the holidays.
Love Matt's channel, but he has become just a tool review channel and not a woodworker channel. I wish him all the best and no hard feelings but I find myself watching his videos less and less
You are my new mentor and I am looking forward to both woodworking and parenting tips in the future. The face your younger daughter makes is priceless and looks a lot like how my daughter used to look at me when I would ask her to hand me my welding stinger when the welder was on. Whatever doesn't electrocute you makes you stronger has always been a family motto ever since my uncle passed away after he told us he could fix the bad transformer on the pole in front of his trailer home. RIP Uncle Cooter, we will miss your drunken antics the most at Christmas. Subbed.
2:11 to be fair, I’m pretty sure the kids are more expensive than the gator lift, so don’t go that route if you don’t already have kids in stock in your shop 😂😂
GOL. I giggled out loud a bunch of times while watching this video. "It's probably a Bible verse." That's what I thought when I first started watching him.
I do watch 731 but when I go to look at the prices of items he recommends, I too am wondering who he is actually targeting for these videos. I'm a Dewalt fanboy and so I bought the 90 degree drill attachment based on his recommendation. Not overly impressed - I'm guessing he didn't enjoy sticking his big paw into a tight space to use this thing. To use this ANYWHERE be prepared to support it (BOTH DIRECTIONALLY AND ROTATIONALLY) at the 90 deg bend , otherwise it will not work. Yep, I bought the spring loaded punch as well. As you say, it can be done cheaper and more accurately with many things much cheaper. As regards the GATOR LIFT - damn, I don't have kids (cute kids!). Very enjoyable video - subscribed!😂
WRONG! The gator lift is MUCH cheaper than two young girls. I would know! And what if you don't have children on hand? How long do you think it's gonna take to get the process started, feed them, and wait for them to be big enough to lift a sheet of plywood?
The only pocket holes I use are in my jeans. Oops! Love the videos. I found my plywood lifter 2 years after I bought it while cleaning the shop. Little girls are great because you always know where to find them. Your two are adorable.
I'm 65 started in construction at 15 , back then there were no sliding miter saws actually there werent to our knowledge beveled miter saws , we had plain old miter saws (electric) hammers hand planes chisels tape measures angle squares framing squares speed squares hand saws and we built multi million dollar homes track housing and custom homes , I BY NO MEANS AM i SAYING THESE NEW TOOLS ARENT SWEEET cause they are , but they do nothing today we werent doing in the mid 70s and doing it as nice and much nicer actually , but I agree whole heartedly with your assessments here, i like and watch a few of the people you have shown here, they seem like good guys and I am not calling any of them sellouts but they either get alot of free tools tooling machinery etc. and they do no better than anyone I grew up with USING FAR LESS tools the key here I think is thattheir viewer base is more aligned with the newer know nothing yet carpenters and their teaching modern easier to use methods than the old style methods of using your actual skills and knowledge, By that I aint saying certain tools machines cnc etc arent sweet but they takeaway the knowledge and part of the skill, this may seem mean or cruel and is not at all meant or intended that way, but sponsorship is exactly that no way will i pay woodpecker pricing cause I dont need them doing my brainwork for me
I'm a big fan of Rex Kreuger. It seems the further he goes in woodworker, the more he gets back to the old ways. I think you have a great perspective. Thanks for sharing it.
Agree on everything except the right angle attachment. Not essential for woodworking but a I use all the time for general construction situations. This 5% member loves your vibe.
I like 731 too, but he’s no different than most others on here. As someone else said, when they start showing cool tools and such and not building anything, I tend to lose interest. I get a kick out of the measuring devices. “ Yeah this costs more, but it’s accurate to a millionth of a hair on a nats ass. Come on, if you have to put on glasses to see the mark on the tape, it’s good enough😂. A lot of that depends on where you mark and cut after measuring. Cut on the wrong side of the line or mark it with a carpenter pencil, it’s probably going to be off a bit. Love the cut off sled and using the 5 cut method to get it to .0005 of an inch per foot of length. Really? How far would you have to extend that out to see it? Even at 20 feet that’s only .01.
I watch every 731 vid too. I also laugh whenever he says, "affordable." So I really appreciate this vid! You're the most realistic woodworker on RU-vid. :)
He is good but unfortunately (now) his channel is now only to sell tools/referral links. I still subscribe but it is getting old. Hope he gets back to building things and not just slinging woodpecker/festool stuff (sorta kidding)
I noticed that a lot of woodworking people have tools they don't use, and I watched a video where a guy made the comment that he bought tools because he thought he needed them, wrong, if you do a little research, you can see how we did it, years ago, when you think you need a special tool, stop sir down and ask yourself, do I really need it, and how often will I use it, or is it a tool that is just going to sit somewhere just to be a prop for a video, I see tools all the time I would like to have, but since I don't race anymore and I have restrictions because of health reasons I pass them up, do listen to you have to have it use common sense.
I first started watching 731 when he was making things. Now it appears he is doing nothing but commercials. I can no longer relate to his channel. Posted the observation on 731's channel. As far as why he does things even click bait.....hummmmm? He stated because it works and drives in views. Slightly hypocritical to what he claims his beliefs are. However, I am not a hater about 731. I used to enjoy his channel. I don't care to watch it anymore due to it being more like commercials than woodworking and less entertaining. I feel he is not really doing any beginner woodwork any justice. Just adding more confusion to the mix for someone just starting out. But what he does works for him and that is the main thing....Do what works. But be honest about things. There are many content creators on RU-vid I hardly watch anymore. I enjoyed their channel many years ago. However, they grew and changed. Awesome for them. Again, I can no longer relate to their channels. I do wish 731 continued success with his channel. I have and will exercise my option to change the channel or unsubscribe. I wish you the very best with your channel. This is the first one I have seen . I did click subscribe and the like button.
I've thought a lot about what you said. I think you have a good perspective. There are plenty of channels on RU-vid that will cover basic woodworking for beginners, and if 731 Woodworks isn't one of them, that's ok. As a Christian, I don't fault the man for running a business though. I'm glad for him, and I hope he's doing a lot to provide for others as well. I see no reason to believe he's not. I like to believe the best of people. The bottom line is that I enjoy watching his content, so I watch it. And if you don't enjoy it, I think he'd be the first to say that's ok. All that being said, I really appreciate the thought you've brought to this conversation, and I'm glad you got a kick out of the video.
I thank you for your response and your kind words. I am not against 731. I do find him to be humorous and entertaining and this is what brought me to be a subscriber to his channel, and it was also he was doing builds and sharing his knowledge. I too am not faulting 731 running a business. I do wish him continued growth and success. I still watch a video of his from time to time. I am still a subscriber to his channel. I have a background of being a trainer, instructor, and a mentor. I view RU-vid content creators as influencers, guides, instructors, trainers, and a mentor. I find it hard to view a mentor in the same light when you know they stepped outside of their beliefs and used excuses to justify their actions. And. this is the case with my view with 731. I am in no way stating I am perfect. I stumble frequently. I wish the best for everyone.
