The culture secretary has vowed to bring an end to divisive politics.
The 'era of culture wars is over', Lisa Nandy promised in her first speech as culture secretary. She said her department will be at the centre of efforts to reflect a more positive and less divisive vision of the UK.
'For too long, for too many people, the story we tell ourselves, about ourselves as a nation, has not reflected them, their communities or their lives,' Ms Nandy told staff at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
She went on to say, 'This is how polarisation, division and isolation thrives. In recent years we’ve found multiple ways to divide ourselves from one another.'
Natasha Devon analyses how culture wars have played a part in the UK's politics in recent years.

This was the argument Angela Davis employed in the 1960s, although she took it a step further. Her argument was that the black population of Boston, for instance, and the slightly less poor Irish population were encouraged to war in order to divert them from their real enemies.

Fingers crossed, I can't see it heading in the same direction. The Tories have really tried to stoke these pointless wars these last few years. But unlike the yanks, most people are just far more focused on the important issues, like being able to pay the bills, the state of the healthcare system and public services. I honestly think the majority of people just don't care either, and have the attitude of leave people alone to live their own lives and mind your own business.

No. Labour are not interested in Culture wars, but the Tories, Reform UK, and their mouthpieces certainly are, as it is an important component of populism, the Ticket they operate on. If they decided to shut up, you probably would not hear much if anything about it. So yes, we are going to see more culture wars, but as it appeals to such a small minority it will be an irritant no more.

I think it comes down to a series of issues which are polarising for many in this country and in which reaching a broad consensus is difficult. Those primarily are trans-related ideology, euroscepticism v EU, the pace of change in which we move "green", how to deal with immigration and the revisionism of british history. If there's anything ive missed, would appreicate it if anyone says but i think those are the most identifiable topics i have come across that appear very divisive. Funnily enough i think the culture war is very much an online phenomenon in my opinion, i think its easy to find more common ground on these issues when i have spoken to people with a range of political backgrounds in person but would be interested in hearing otjer peoples experiences.

Culture wars currently don't work in society because we are more liberal in social values than we are in economic. Also the side most likely to weaponise culture are those who ultimately want to cause instability and division (Tories and Reform). It's broadcasters like LBC who allow a both sideism approach and think impartiality is allowing both sides a voice but letting one side make hateful, ignorant language and blatant lies to get their point across where the left have inclusivity but on the surface level. The most reasonable belief is as long as it's not immoral and illegal then it's perfectly acceptable to be whoever you are and do whatever suits you. Which as a society we need to be. We can't agree on everything but demonising a group that does no actual harm to society isn't the way forward.

Both the left and right have contributed to cultural and political conflicts over time. It's that simple. No adults in the room whatsoever. You have cancel culture from the left and over the last decade in the west most 'Hate speech' laws and the rot on free speech has been firmly from the left. The right then had a reactionary movement, with elements that go to far also. Political, ideological and societal bubbles don't progress a society whatsoever. We need more open conversations, embrace free speech, opinions and thoughts without consequences (cut off point promoting violence) and hopefully like adults meet in the middle. It's not rocket science. LBC, TalkTV, GB News etc etc all engage in it, claiming the other side is the issue. You're all the same. No adults.

The far left examples are.... What, stop discrimination against trans folk, we don't want to fund civilian death in the middle east, stop saying slurs? Cancel culture barely exists once you come offline for a day The enlightented centrist stance just allows the worst elements of regression in the country to drag us down while centrists pretend to be above it all, until it affects them personally. Puberty blockers are not hormone treatment. Different medications doing different things. Neither is going to be prescribed without long wait lists to see many medical health practitioners who all have standards of care. The whole Cass report and ‘trans debate’ is a red herring to deflect away from the desire to take away human rights. Also see the rhetoric on asylum and ECHR.
@ianbooth3164
@ianbooth3164 Месяц назад
@@hayleymason8123 Are you sure about the time taken in the decision to treat children, for the CASS Review noted that children were often only seen for a one-hour assessment before being referred for puberty blockers. It also noted the unknown long-term impacts of puberty blockers, such as their effects on cognitive and psychosexual development. The Guardian - generally a paper very supportive of trans rights - said in their editorial that, 'children were catastrophically failed by the medical profession'. You'e not 'taking away' human rights by putting vulnerable children into the hands of ideologues who broke near every rule of medicine and were simply experimenting on kids. The clinics were closed for a reason and blockers banned.
@hayleymason8123
@hayleymason8123 Месяц назад
@@ianbooth3164 The final appointment or assessment may only be an hour long, my own consult with an endocrinologist was likely only about an hour before we agreed on a starting dosage and continued program. However before that appointment there were 3 years of assessments with medical professionals. So I feel the narrative of parents can just get these medications for their child after an hour talking to a GP is a little simplified. The rights I am referering to are not those of the trans-kids, unfortunately they are the low hanging fruit to fuel the conversation that then says what about the trans adults, male and female, notice how the loudest anti-trans voices hardly ever mention trans men. Then once they separate the T from LGB, well there’s a little more room to go after the rest of the community, because despite years of greater equality “we were right about the T, so everyone else under the rainbow flag must be just as bad”. Lose gender equality and then cis-female rights are on the chopping block, look at project 2025. Once they chip into paternity rights, then workers rights and protections are a short step away, Why after years of trans medical care did this suddenly become a thing after around 2016, and globally not just in the UK, but the USA and Canada. Teen suicides have gradually been on the rise, since 2016. Also if puberty blockers are so risky and dangerous why is only a ban on the use to treat gender issues, cis-patients can still be prescribed the same medications in likely the same dosages for other medical reasons. Like I said the Cass report, which was compiled without the inclusion of any trans voices, is just a convenient red-herring.
