Does Adding Chlorine To A Pool Make the pH rise?

I took a bucket of water and tested the starting pH. I then added 8.4 ppm of Chlorine to that bucket to see if Chlorine would raise my pH level. Now 8 ppm in a bucket of water will be the same as adding 8 ppm to a pool so you will get the same results.

Hi I have a question, so where I am the Midwest and we use granulated chlorine we use cal hypo and Dichlor my question is do you think that the Ph will raise the same way? By almost 1 point?
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569
Liquid chlorine has a pH of 13 that's why the pH went up slightly. Cal Hypo has a pH of around 12 so yes that will also raise pH slightly. Dichlor has a much lower pH of 6.8 so that will lower your pH. But once all the chlorine is used up the pH should drop back down. Be careful with the Dichlor bc it does add 6 ppm of CYA per lb to a 10k pool.

Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right Ok thank you for the information I do have another question our market is primarily liner pools and some people are fearful of raising the calcium hardness up to 350, so would having the calcium up to 350 hurt the liner in the pool? I have been on a quest to learn all about the chemicals and how each one works with the other. I have been following the L.S.I. But also modifying the amount or which chemicals to use based on what the pool looks like. For example if the L.S.I. Says a pool is within range but the pool is green then I can’t just leave the pool alone. But I appreciate all your help.

@@christophersilva2617 Sorry I dont service vinyl pools. They say not over 400 CH. The biggest thing they dont want with a vinyl pool is corrosive water. But at a 250 CH and a higher TDS your Alk and pH need to be slightly higher. Then when winter comes the numbers need to be even higher. What is the Conditioner level? You can watch my video on Conditioner bc a 50 ppm Conditioner isn't enough to hold chlorine all week. If you have access to liquid chlorine I would start using that instead. Your CYA can go up fast with Dichlor and the higher that goes means you need more chlorine in the pool. You either have too much CYA or not enough. Have you tried Oxidizer? A non chlorine shock to kill Organics.

Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right well the CYA in the pools differ some are extremely high and some are low some are spot on. We have mostly sand and D.E. Filters very few cartridge filters so we can slowly lower the CYA and Hardness through backwashing. I honestly didn’t know that the TDS Alk and pH needed to be even higher over the winter. And no I have not used an oxidizer. I normally use that if we have locked up chlorine. Does the chlorine get locked up because of the Organics?
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569
Not the TDS just the Alk and pH. Cold water is corrosive so you need to offset that by letting the Alk and pH come up a little. Higher TDS is corrosive. Download a LSI app and play around with it. You will see how one affects the other.

Swimming pool regular use Chlorine and ph -?

I'm not sure if I understand your question. All pools do need Chlorine to keep them sanitized. All water sources have a pH value but in swimming pools we need to constantly make adjustments to the pH to keep it within the parameters that we want.

You can add a chlorine neutralizer to get that down to around 4 to 5 ppm depending on what your CYA level is. To lower pH you need to figure out the drop that you want then add the proper amount of acid.
