I think there's a study that concluded that people with autism have immunity to marketing BS. Personally i have adblock and sponsorblock on every device. I don't even know what the internet looks like without them. Last time i've seen and add was maybe 6 months ago when someone tried to show me a video on their device and i got immediately annoyed

Ads work but only for certain people. It’s like how gatcha games make most of their money from the big spenders while a plurality of players will pay nothing. Ads get some people some of the time so they’re worth it.
@DaggerSkullery
@DaggerSkullery 9 месяцев назад
I think it also works for people like me who say ads don't work on me. What I mean when I say ads don't work on me is that most ads don't work. I don't use social medias much so if some streaming servive has a new show/movie I want to watch, I will most likely know about it from ads since I don't go to streaming services to browse really. Sure, I might be paying for that particular service already, but if I feel like I haven't used it in a while, I might put it on pause. So the ads work in the sense that it reminds me to use the service and that might make me not cancel it.
@Tabako-san

Yeah I will say as someone whose gotten a little older and has mostly older work colleagues outside the odd RU-vid video advertisements are generally the only way I know if something is out or coming out. I didn't even know about Spider-Man 2 being a thing until I saw an ad on Twitter.
@DemonLordSparda
@DemonLordSparda 9 месяцев назад
Ads work on most people, just not in ways they actually think about or recognize which is the whole point. Very few ads cause people to see them and actively think "I should seek out this product". What they do is start planting the seed of recognition. That way if you are thinking of buying something your brain goes "Oh yeah I heard of this brand". If you recognize a brand you are more likely to buy it without scrutinizing it too heavily. If the brand is unfamiliar people tend to examine their purchase more. Ads are generally meant to build up your brand and product recognition.

That's not an ad, that's going to the store whose purpose is buying a product and seeing that product on display and learning about it and then making a decision An ad is if you were walking down the street and the company that published that game hired a guy to come up and shove a series of pictures in your face and demand money from you in the moment
@ShaCaro
@ShaCaro 9 месяцев назад
You, by your own volition going to the store section of Steam is not 'ads working'. That's you actively going out of your way to seek a product and selecting one.
@godlyvex5543
@godlyvex5543 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, I agree with the other guys, that isn't an ad. I think I agree with some of the other people who have said "the purpose of ads isn't to get you to buy something, it's to inform you of it so you know it exists, as people are less likely to trust brands they have never seen before". That makes a lot of sense to me. I'm more likely to buy something I view as "popular", and ads make me think something is more commonly known than it might actually be. So ads seem to be less about influencing you into buying a product you wouldn't buy otherwise, and more about informing you that the product exists so it feels more familiar.

modern advertising as a concept is really messed up, if you think about it. It usually doesn't tell you much about the product, you don't THINK it works, but the corporate overlords have actually cracked the human psyche's inner machinations to where that seemingly ineffective key jingling is a strong enough influence of the subconscious that it has a significant impact on their sales

Yeah nah imma be honest. They didn't crack anything. They trialed and errored their way into making SOME people buy SOME of their products. I have legitimately never bought anything that was ever advertised to me except sponsored segments for games. Even those need me to first be actively seeking new products and sponsoring the right person and that only gets me to check out their steam page. The companies don't subconsciously control your every move so that you buy their lawnmower even though you have no garden. They just hope and pray that some idiot is going to fall for the ad
@jonathanfrakes9505
@jonathanfrakes9505 9 месяцев назад
@@sisyphus1326 brother. You sound like a fucking conspiracy theorist lmao. The argumentation is too convenient. "It works even though you don't feel it and it has never actually had an impact in your life at all, but it works!!" What i said was that ads will not and have never CREATED an interest in their product for me. The only thing ads have ever done is making me aware of a product that i ALREADY wanted. Advertising works on SOME people SOME of the time. I saw one guy drawing parallels to gatcha games where the 0.1% of players fund the entire profit of the game. I imagine that that is how advertising works; some people got tricked by it and it was enough to be worth it. I agree it is powerful and that fascist use techniques that are similar or directly taken from marketing research, but fascism, like advertising, works on some idiots some of the time. Advertising is not magical and if you don't want it to work, then it won't.

A step further into this line of thought. If ads are a marketing expense and can be written off in taxes doesn't that just mean that all of this shit is just nonsense. Like someone is getting paid to do the ads, but how much are corps truly paying out of their own margins and at what point does the tax liability literally pay for the cost of the ads through write offs. So wouldn't the idea be ads automatically make money by existing because otherwise that money (from the company's perspective anyway) basically gets evaporated by taxes.

Advertising hasn't worked on me since I was a young kid. (unless you wanna count subconscious brainwashing, because obviously you don't know when you've been subconsciously brainwashed, thats the whole point) I've never seen an ad and bought the product. I tend to actually avoid any brands that i see an ad for. I've never clicked on an ad. Entertaining ads don't make me want to buy the product any more. I've seen a lot of the "classic" ads that are meant to be examples of highly effective advertisements and they do nothing to make me want the product. The only way an ad might get me is if they are simply informing me about a feature/service that I actually wanted, but did not know existed before hand. Even then, I'm not buying it based on how good the ad was, it's just that I am now aware of a thing I wanted beforehand. I've still never bought anything through that though, thats just theoretical.
