It’s unfair of the medical staff to ask a patient questions while under anesthesia. It should require a patient’s consent. It’s an invasion of privacy, and if it is done, it should be recorded for the patient to see and hear. In fact, I think all surgeries should have to mandatorily be recorded for the patient’s safety. Too much goes on while the patient is unconscious, especially when doctors are covering up their mistakes.
@@cathyholcombe4674 thank you for agreeing with me. A retired nurse who is a friend of mine told me all kinds of things about when patients have passed away or have been damaged in surgery, how they all cover up for each other when it was due to negligence. She said they would get fired and blacklisted if they told the truth. I have also seen videos of doctors and nurses making fun of the patient while they are under anesthesia. Recording them would probably keep them acting a little more professional
@@JenJen0582 If you are referring to audio recordings maybe, that is still eh… but video recordings? No, absolutely not. That is an even greater violation of privacy than what is indicated in the posted video. All of my surgeries, but one, I had to be nude for and I don’t want a video of me strapped naked to a table to exist. If I had to guess, even audio recordings would be considered a violation of privacy. The staff will openly discuss your case and maybe even discuss any incidental concerns they may find during the procedure. There is an issue of storing the recordings securely due to this and storing high quality audio files safely/reliably could become an issue monetarily. Once there is that documentation they can’t destroy it either, they have to keep it for anywhere from 7-15 years depending on where they live. Video files would make this 100x worse and could result in hospitals having to dedicate large amounts of space just for data servers (as they would need more than one as having only one copy would absolutely not be safe). Plus there could be added cyber security issues and complications as well. The other thing that might be a potential problem is patients hearing the healthcare workers discussing their case and using medical terminology and thinking they are making fun of them when they are not. For example, I was on the ER once when this women went off on a doctor for saying her son needed to see a physiatrist… she thought the doctor was saying her son was crazy and making it up and was sending him to a psychiatrist. It took them over 20 minutes to clear up the confusion and calm down. So this is one where I get the impetus, but I think there are a lot of things that could go wrong. Also, I don’t care if the doctors or nurses make fun of me or my body. Go nuts guys lol, you can say my junk is weird or small or whatever, you can make fun of my scars, say I have weird nipples, am weirdly proportional or whatever they want. If they’re going to do that in the OR they are going to do it later anyway. Edit: however, different places have different laws surrounding medical documents/records and how they are to be stored and if they even need to be stored (so, can be destroyed after the patient reviews it) and this would change the ethics surrounding the topic.
@@gamingwhilebroken2355 all of your medical records are stored, so why couldn’t the videos? I see your point, but then maybe it should be recorded with the patient’s consent. I would give my consent to have my surgery videotaped. After all, I have seen myself naked before lol. Nobody’s body is perfect. I have earned all of my stretch marks, scars etc and I am happy to say I am alive to talk about every one of my flaws and battle scars. Also, I am extremely interested in the medical field so I would love to watch it.
If someone under anesthesia starts muttering “I didn’t mean to stab them” . . . “Did I buy enough bleach?” . . . “Nobody will ever find the shovel” . . . “Don’t tell the District Attorney “. . . are you obligated to contact law enforcement?
@@maggiekelley259 What if it’s a specific confession that can’t be from a movie. Like “God I hope nobody ever finds Timmy and Sally. Under the shed foundation. 1234 Main Street. They will never sell Lemonade again!”
I thought I was the only one who experienced that! His way of presenting information is pleasantly hypnotic, no wonder some of his patients feel disinhibited. Such a gift of connecting to an audience is something you have to be born with and can’t be taught, not even at Harvard.
I was so worried about how this would affect me, but apparently I was mostly quiet and smiling. When I wasn’t, they said I just kept thanking everyone and telling them I was having “wonderful time”. I also wanted to know if one of my horses was there to pick me up and take me home. 😂🐴
My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed. She came out of surgery and was "talking incoherently'. The surgeon and nurses were very concerned. They approached us and tried to explain her having a " bad reaction". They said that she doesn't understand that she had oral surgery. She thinks she had a hysterectomy. She keeps saying that she wants her uterus and bring her uterus to her. We started laughing and explained that our daughter's (odd) pet name for me, her mother, is her "Uterus". Not an overdose or bad reaction at all. Just a family joke/ pet name. :)
When i awoke up in recovery my male nurse was so nice and kind to mean I woke up nice and polite and talking nice and saying please and thank you and may I have a pillow under my leg please and thank you! And the nurse said I wish we had all our patients like you? That made my day?
I have to tell you my opinion about the "asking you out" thing ... From what I've seen (I've had many surgeries), anesthesiologists are usually SUPER good looking and usually very kind. Most of the time, they answer more questions and give the patients more time than the surgeons. I've probably asked a few out in my day too 😂
I am a former ICU nurse, then a internal medicine physician, then a psychiatrist, currently. I will attest to the fact that I will curse you out like a boatswains mate, as my father used to say, unless you give me Toradol or another anti-inflammatory, and wake me up as quickly as possible from anesthesia. My cervical spine surgery went so awesome and I didn’t punch a single person or custom out. My first surgery at the age of 21 they had to tie me down and threaten to call my mother. It all depends on the anesthesiologist. I respect you doc. I got banned from a regional Hospital center for cursing the entire staff out before I was out of anesthesia Latest surgery, cervical spine for severe injury, milk of amnesia, woke up immediately after surgery with no pain whatsoever and somebody standing right there, holding my hand. Huge difference, different medication, different outcome, different nurses, different outcome.
Are you kidding about propafol being a non-amnesiac? It is the only worst drug I have ever used on a patient because worst drug for memory loss. Have you ever actually had “milk of amnesia, personally? If not, no comment.
Dr. Henry K. Beecher & Bjørn Aage Ibsen founded some of the ethical principals in Anesthesiology…we hold certain important ethical beliefs following the Nuremberg trials.
I have learned so much from your content. My 15 th surgery is on the 11th with 3 more to follow. I've never had a problem after going under. Was so much more relaxed when i had my last surgery thanks to you. Thank you
It is fun to learn from you! I found it calming to read the PDR contents for any drug I may have been prescribed before choosing to take it or not and having a greater discussion with my physician. I guess I am predisposed to making informed choices over trusting others to decide. It also makes me a better Commercial Pilot.
Happy New Year Dr. Kaveh!! Oh my gosh! This was so great, as usual, but what perfect timing as I will be undergoing surgery on Jan 24th which will require anaesthesia. My surgeon is very handsome and I really don’t want to say anything inappropriate while ‘under’ 😁
I had a Cryoablation. When I was under anesthesia, I remember them asking me "What's your other name?" I answered with the name of a great aunt that I never met. At my follow up appointment, my EP greeted me with that name!
As many times as I've had surgery (10) waking up has not been routine. Most time I wake up violently Shaking from feeling cold. I don't mean that I shiver I am shaking uncontrollably. The few times I've opted for a Spinal Anesthia recovery has fairly calm.
I’ve had patients ask for the scissors in my pocket to cut them loose….they weren’t tied down. And marriage proposals. Comments about their spouse or family, usually good. What’s said in surgery and recovery stays there. But the majority of the patients just wake up and don’t share unless prompted. At least in recovery. I’ve had several surgeries and dozens of procedures myself under anesthesia. I always ask them to play music so I focus on that.
I had a surgery when I was 5. I swear I remember being wheeled into the hallway , to wait my turn and someone came out of the OR and I saw in , it was a man on the table , I saw his upper half and my little mind thought that he was chopped in half. I remember a nice orderly who came and held my hand. I am 56 and have this vivid memory. I'm now thinking that I must have been under ??? Can not imagine that they would have left me , awake in the OR. I do not have memory of being put under. Maybe lol
I remember when I had a surgery I had severe depression and was very hopeful that I would stay asleep and that might explain why I had a visit from the psychiatrist lol.
My thoughts about the "truth" is that the truth might be just thoughts and not how we would act on those thoughts. A person might find another person attractive or unattractive, or thoughts may go through their heads regarding race or ethnicity. We cannot control those thoughts, but we can control how we act. Random thoughts of how we were raised, what recent entertainment we viewed, or what was said to us by other people, may put those thoughts in our heads, but it is not how we would act towards others.
Part 2- so Pain Management today told me " you have to have your neck surgery now! Your neck is sad bad a simple fall could kill you! I asked him what are we going to do about the pain . He said " keep living with it!!" 😡
I need surgery to take out the rods, screws, and fusion from C-3 to C-7. I have a herniated disc to the right of where they anchored the rod at C-7. Within the last month, my right trap muscle went numb with an extreme burning sensation. I am a side sleeper and sleep is hard to find these days. However, I need 3 surgeries on my spine, Cervical, Lumbar area, and the Burst T-12 area. I have retropulsion of bone fragments on my spinal cord that need to be removed. Not a fan of the T-12 area being fixed ... I was hoping for just cement to be injected in that area. Oh, well it is what it is. Love and Light to All.
Can I complain a second? Went to pain management today and my PCP wouldn't write anything for pain but stated " I know you are in pain, I see it in the scan" but sent me to pain management
I'm 6 weeks post op and when I was going under anesthesia I started talking about getting the next 2 weeks schedules done and the break schedules done. I'm a HR manager. My Dr mentioned this to me in recovery.
I cleaned out my closet a long time ago .. No skeletons there ! 😆 Q: what if someone confessed to something that they may not have done ?? Eg quoting something which they may have seen on TV or May have read up in a book perhaps watching a movie scene that’s stayed in their mind?? I know this , whenever I read a book and sleep I tend to dream of the story and characters too which seem all too real in my dream , maybe under sedation it’s possible to confess to something which may not be real but may appear as though it is ? 🤷🏻♀️ Do the medical team who hear disturbing confessions take any action towards what’s been said ?
Some stories have my jaw dropped. I'm in Australia and had surgery about a month ago, and it was nothing like what I had read. I went under and stayed under the whole time, and they gave me a "bear hugger" to keep me warm throughout. I've read of bad surgery stories like the ones in the comments as if they're common. I was expecting it to be like that for me, so I was quite panicked going under and panicking as soon as I woke up asking if there were any complications, but there were none. I had a really professional team that took care of me and made me feel safe when I don't often feel that in hospitals after past traumatic experiences. I hate to ask, but I have to wonder, what country are people in with these bad stories I hear? Is it common everywhere like I hear, or did I just get lucky? Or I have to wonder if the stories I read in comments are based in the United States, known for neglecting its citizens.
Happy new year man, I always say something funny and hilarious under anesthesia, I always talk to my anesthesiologist and make jokes that help me to relax! I donated to the anesthesiologist Foundation again on new year! I really enjoy donating to the anesthesiologist Foundation, since it was hard for me to go to college because of my cerebral palsy, I really wanted to be an anesthesiologist! I’m still waiting on a date for my eye surgery, the surgery center is busy! I want an all electric Mercedes g wagon, I can’t drive because of my cerebral palsy, so I’m gonna let other people drive my Mercedes g wagon! You rock man
I know I comment a lot but it can’t hurt. I like to just joke around. What was used as “Truth Serum”? Videos are absolutely amazing. Thank you for taking the time to post them. ❤🎉
Thank you as always for your informative videos! I was watching the live stream but my internet was cutting in and out so I had to leave. Wow, I think you've answered my biggest questions about talking while anaesthesia! Now, feeling much more relieved in case I ever have to have another surgery. Happy new year!
I'm curious what you hear from patients with things like Pure OCD. Our brain goes some messed up places. Now I'm nervous what I've said 😅 Should I tell them beforehand what they're in for??? Because I feel like it would be quite abrupt to hear half the stuff that goes through my head
I’m hopefully going to be having my hysterectomy at the end of February. I’ve had multiple surgeries before. I don’t remember really being nervous about having surged and being put under. My concern is more about how my body will react to post op meds.
This explains why I said the embarrassing thing I said and now request at every colonoscopy that they don't wake me up until after that tube is completely out 😒
Hi Dr. Kaveh, I was wondering what is the difference between liquid anaesthesia and gas? How do they work? I was offered both options as I was told to get teeth out by orthodontist and, as I have needle fear, don’t want to be awake when they do it. Also thank you for answering my question about needle fear, helps so much. The stream was great. Your videos are good and really help as I want to be a doctor when I’m older! :) thank you!
I am like 120, I have hereditary thyroid disease and type 2 diabetes but I still have the fastest metabolism even though my illnesses want to slow it down.
I would have told some truths, when I woke while under anesthesia, and the doctors were cleaning out a partial blockage of a Stent. It felt like a stiff wire brush reaming out my arteries, the pain was way past intense, but, I was frozen, unable to move or make any noise or indicate in any way my situation. Listening to doctors and nurses calm chatter was in sharp contrast to what I was experiencing. I decided to do whatever it would take to never go through that type of thing again. I spend a significant part of my small social security check every month buying supplements in the hope they will help somehow. On one level it is irrational, but I choose supplements over food, and hope that the next heart event will be my final one. Yes that experience left a huge psychic scar and at 73 years of age will not be seeking counseling. That's a truth related to, but, not directly involving anesthesia.😂
Dr. Kaveh, I love what you’re doing! I watch on RU-vid on my TV so I can’t usually comment but I’ve watched a lot of your videos. I am supposed to have back surgery in a month or so. My 15 month old daughter just got diagnosed with MRSA! Wtf do I do? Isolate from her? Is my surgery going to be postponed? I really need this surgery, I can barely get around. Postponing surgery would be devastating! I was scared enough about surgery but add this on top and I’m a wreck. I need your calm advice. And for my baby girl, what long term effects? She’s had this ear infection for a year, it never went away and now we find out it’s mrsa. Her pediatrician is acting like it’s no big deal but we are very concerned. I hope to hear from you soon.
I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's infection. While I can't give medical advice, I will share that MRSA infections are typically treated like any other infection, but with MRSA-specific antibiotics. I hope you are comfortable asking your pediatrician your questions so that you can help you be more confident in your daughter's infection treatment plan. With regards to your surgery, certainly share your concerns with your surgery team. In my experience, it is highly unlikely that this will impact your surgery from your point of view. Again, different antibiotics may be used during the course of your surgery, because you may be colonized with the same bacteria. I am wishing you, and your daughter, the best 🙏
I have a surgery scheduled in two weeks. I know I shouldn't be, but I am kind of scared. My dad has been infected with staph multiple times from surgeries, and my mom reacts so badly to anesthesia.
The last two times I had emergency surgery (Feb and DEC 2023) I both times woke up during the surgery. The first I remember quite a bit. Now I’m scared to death to have surgery. Is it true that being fair (blonde/redish hair I may need more anesthesia??
Anesthesiologists are so, so important. Before I had major surgery, I had one who told a "questionable joke." I was very uncomfortable going under. I'll never forget him. Not a good memory! (The surgeon was remarkable, thankfully)
@Medical Secrets Hi Dr. Kaveh, I was wondering if you, or you have knowledge of cases, have experienced people admitting to serious crimes under anesthesia; and if so, what is your responsibility after that. I have had a numerous surgeries, some of which the ingredients of the anesthesia have produced Akathisia (Droperidol, anti-emetics in anesthesia, etc.) and seems many Anesthetists think I'm just talking about "restless legs". The Akathesia I have experienced from these drugs (and other psychotropic medications) produces EXTREME Akathisia. I wonder how much this situation is taught in studying to become an Anestheologist?
I cure people who have PNES and I use new forms of exposure therapy and I think that they may benefit from ketamine. I believe in healing medications in moderation of course!
Then why when j ask the surgeon if i said anything unusual when under anaesthesia, they always say, "no. You were fine". Maybe it would be therapeutic to know what you said
Omg. I have embarrassed myself too many times. I cried for my doctor bc I woke up unexpectedly and I didnt see him. I woke up another time to tell them I had dentures in and am too VAIN to allow them to be taken out...almost every time I go under, I wake up to talk. Lol😂😂😂😂😂
I had 2 colonoscopies 6 months apart . My first the anesthesiologist asked a ton of questions alcohol, marijuana , coke, pills, dentures. The next one with a different anesthesiologist , same doc and hospital, didn’t ask a single question . Did he ask all this after I was out ?
Nope! I don’t share anything that I don’t want because I have the fastest metabolism that my doctors have ever seen. It makes my surgeries very complicated!
when I was put under for the first time, I didn't react in these ways, but I was definitely more grumpy than usual LOL (water/food fast) I did hallucinate right before I went unconscious and that was weird!
Crossing my fingers that my anaesthesiologist did what he said he would and I stayed asleep the whole time. The worst part about anaesthesia to me was the thought of accidentally swearing or cussing someone out under anaesthesia, Lmao.
I was extremely stressed when told they'd deliver anesthesia in the spine. The anesthesiologist put me out before injecting my back and I'm soooo grateful. Thanks Nurse Yu.
I remember the first time I went under as a late teen and went I came out i ended up saying in general while coming out "thats some good shit, where can I get that" and the anesthesiologist and surgen were bugging out, one yeah thats good right
I got ketamine when I had a football size tumor taken out of my chest and I never had it before & when I woke up I started freaking out, everything was gray and I got up off the bed in the icu unit right after surgery & was freaking out & trying to leave & screaming. It was so weird.
I struggle with masturbation addiction and it would be a shame for my mother to find out. I have been clean for many weeks but it is still fresh on my mind and I dread the day I get my wisdom teeth removed. 😔
I suffer from schizophrenia, and have undergone treatment with drugs like serentil, mellaril, prolifixin, navane…etc. Telling the truth is much harder in a schizophrenic state where the mind has many active faculties ? which provide for a multiplicity of motivations, and reasons not to reveal secrets that may allow others to exploit you. So - study medicine and become a doctor like Dr Kaneh ! ( thanks ), rather than be at the mercy of a potentially cruel world .
The biggest experts don’t know that PNES is a mental suppression problem and ketamine allows you to deal with problems that are conducive to what you can handle. I should know because I tried it myself!
I remember when I was very young (68 now) going to get my tonsils out. No one explained why they were putting this big thing over my mouth and nose before surgery. I thought they were trying to kill me! I fought with all my might and was told later that it took 3 nurses to hold me down. I will never forget that experience.
The doctor should have fully explained what he was going to do to put you to sleep before he started! That would have saved you from trauma and made it much easier on the medical staff. Where was the common sense? (Used 'he' because it was a time when doctors were basically all male.)
Does anesthesia as well allow shared lying or misinformed information? The last time i can say was during a biopsy. While waking they females were discussing fellas and maybes , and at the time i was in distrust toward my partner ..freely advising to not because they hide things sometimes. That was about forty minutes before due wake up...and informing them i could feel the incision, but at lesser ..
This was an interesting video, but the audio keeps fading in and out and it sounds like you're talking into a glass. I suppose the audio is a consequence of where you did the video; I doubt operating rooms are good for acoustics. But, other than that, it's a good vid.
Thank you for time. Recently l had spine surgery I have memory of my surgery or being in recovery when I asked my surgeon he I was definitely in recovery and he had a conversation with him. I have absolutely no memory of wot either if us said.ive no idea if it was appropriate or not?
