Hi Rebekah! You are correct that some women gain weight on the birth control pill. However, most women on birth control do not gain weight.

Pandia Health a lot of Indian women are used in these studies because they have extremely fast metabolisms. The studies only approve genetically thin women and if they see you have the propensity to gain weight, they say you’re “not qualified” for the study. That’s how they manipulate to keep their billion dollar industry going. Women with weight issues should not go on Hormonal birth control they should get the non hormone IUD. They think we are fools as women. We know when we’re gaining weight and not contributing to it. WE ARE NOT IDIOTS!!

This is why I have trust issues 😂 because I as well have gained weight on the birth control I’ve been going gym and eating healthy still same but before I was on in the birth control my body was a lot slimmer. I gained 30 pounds beeing on this birth control.

What if you tried exercising and eating healthy while taking birth control . I’ve heard many bad stories about birth control , but I decided to be childfree and since I’m fearful to tie my tubes I’ll give the pills a try first.

Each woman is different and responds to different hormones differently. Maybe if you tried a different birth control pill, you wouldn’t have gained weight. Few women gain weight on norgestimate, desogestrel, drosperinone based birth control pills. And some women gain weight from the estrogen which is in all combined birth control pills.

@@PandiaHealth I have been on birth control (different combinations) several times in my life. Each and every time I have gained a significant amount of weight, despite eating very healthy, tracking food and calories and exercising. 2 years ago I gave it another try and, after a couple years pill break, have been consistently on the Rigevidon. My starting weight was 67kg. I now weight 98kg, am constantly fatigued and, again, I put everything I eat into a diary so I can assure you that I have not been having cravings or munchies. I will probably get off it for good soon as this is ruining my life.

Sorry to hear about that. Different women respond differently to different pills. There might be a pill that works for you or the Nuvaring or the IUD with the hormone. You should KNOW what pill affected you, that way and if you want to try again, tell the doctor NOT that pill with that progesterone…

If you have weight issues, try norgestimate, desogestrel, drosperinone (but you need to be able to drink 8 glasses of water at least each day for the last one).

Dani, actually the research was a Cochrane review “Cochrane is a non-profit, non-governmental organization formed to organize medical research findings so as to facilitate evidence-based choices about health interventions faced by health professionals, patients, and policy makers.” However, we do agree that lots more research needs to be done as to how different women respond differently to hormones.

I did not get "the munchies" on birth control, I am on a keto diet due to allergies and am a healthy 145 pounds 5'7". Doctors are always trying to get me to take the pill for irregular periods. Every-time I try it, I end up gaining 40 pounds. I have tried 12 different types for over 15 years and have now been pill free and healthy for 5 years. I do not eat poorly as it makes me sick. Look at any online review board for the pill and most have a review of 2 out of 10. WEIGHT GAIN being the number one complaint. If anything, I just wish doctors would acknowledge that it is the pill that made me gain the weight and not just assume I have had the munchies or shoved food in my face. I have been told this line by doctors every time!: "Here take this pill its amazing, its the new prescription with super low estrogen, so much better than, (Put another form of birth control here.) oh you gained 40 pounds in 2 months, well that is because you are hungrier and eating more, the pill causes hunger." YEAH OK! I even saw a nutritionist thinking I was crazy who confirmed my diet did not change AT ALL!! And that I eat extremely healthy. Its hormonal and not even close to enough research has been done to help. 10 years from now I truly believe the pill will be compared to smoking in relation to the health problems it causes that we do not even know about. Your video makes me feel dismissed and angry.

We’re sorry that our video makes you feel disempowered. The pill can definitely cause some women to gain weight via hormones or munchies. Each woman is different and responds to hormones differently. For your irregular menses, you only need to have a period every 3-4 months. So you could just do a progesterone withdrawal every 3-4 months. But if you are having at least 3-4 periods a year, then you don’t need to do that.

It might be the progesterone in the pill you are taking. levonorgestrel, norgestrel, norethindrone may cause more weight gain than norgestimate, desogestrel, drosperinone.

@@maddy7230 Yes! I’ve been on it for about a year. I haven’t gained weight, my periods are much lighter, and much more tolerable. I don’t have many problems. The only thing is you have to make sure you’re consistent with taking it every day. It doesn’t have to be at the same time every day but if you skip pills, you could experience break through bleeding. My friend had troubles with her first brand birth control (Yazmin), but her doctor switched her to another one and she doesn’t have problems anymore. Most of my friends are on birth control and all of them haven’t gained any weight, I think it’s more based on the individual.

Kristina, it definitely could be the pill. Try another pill or another method. There are at least 38 other formulations and about 6 other progestins that you can try.

Depot is the worst!! It has been shown to make women gain weight!! The key to losing weight is what you eat. It may be the hormones in the pill that you were prescribed. There are 10 different progestins out there to try. We usually go with norgestimate, desogestrel, drosperinone. Was it one of those?

i'm the same exact way. i never changed my diet, i'm pretty healthy, and i've been gaining weight despite working out harder. i just scheduled an appointment with my doctor to switch to the copper iud in hopes to improve my mood, lose the weight i've gained on BC, and to feel more in tune with my body again. it's bs how doctors claim that hormonal BC doesn't make you gain weight. it's hormones, so ofc with (most) women, it'll play a part into weight gain, mood, etc.. so i'd def recommend switching to the copper IUD. it's low maintenance, free of hormones, and can stay in for up to 10 years. i've never been so excited to switch omlll

The depo shot is famous for giving women the munchies. Because every woman is different, it's hard to predict how the side effects will manifest in each person. But compared to other methods of birth control, the depo shot is known to give women the munchies.

No. the birth control pill will NOT make you gain weight. It will improve your acne. Headaches usually only happen with those meds that cause women to pee more (drosperinone) and as long as they drink 8 glasses of water a day, they should be OK. So please do try your new medication.

If the IUD with hormone made you gain weight, you could try the IUD with copper which has no hormones and shouldn’t make you gain weight. Otherwise you could try the Nuvaring or other pill that doesn’t have levonorgestrel (the hormone in the IUD with hormone).

Well the pill gave them munchies and it's all how you deal with the munchies... It's hard to fight the munchies.

yes! any form of hormonal BC has the potential to make women gain weight. try the copper IUD instead! it's hormone free and you wouldn't deal with the dreaded side effects as hormonal BC

Aviane is levonorgestrel. Each woman responds different to different progesterones. If you notice weight gain, then you can try to increase exercise, eat healthier, or if that doesn't work, then consider changing to a different medicaiton. The birth control won't interfere with the medications listed above. But Adderall may increase the liver "eating up the hormones" of the birth control pill. So if you notice more spotting, you may need to go to a stronger pill to acommodate the revv'ed up liver eating up the birth control hormones.

Nexplanon is a great method in that you don’t have to think about it. Just get it placed and you are good for 3 yrs. Some women love it. Some women have spotting on it.

Pandia Health ok thank you! I got it implanted on Wednesday and I have had no bad side effects yet. I just haven’t had much of an appetite since Wednesday. There is some pain in my arm when I move it certain ways. Hopefully that goes alway.

Hi there and great question! Dr. Yen said that based on the research on 400 women: at 1 month - there was no difference in women who were on the implant and not on the implant. At 3 months, those on the implant were on average 0.5 kg heavier. Dr. Yen says she thinks it’s like depo provera - the shot. It gives you the munchies and it’s all how you deal with the munchies. Every woman is different so speak to your doctor to see if this is the right fit for you.

I have pills but where did u gain ? maybe it’s from quarantine for me I never felt like I gained from eating or being in my house a lot but now I’ve realized my face got bigger and my stomach a bit and I wanna go off really bad to see if anything would change ..

Same here. I used to weight 102 to 104 pound, but I now I am 136 pound after taking birth control which is implanon. My weight was 125, while i am pregnant with my first child. Pandia Health Than how come when I workout i am not losing any weight? I normally would see results with 2 workouts but ever since that iud I have not been able to loose it as fast at all. Different women are different and sounds like your body does NOT like the hormone in the hormonal IUD - Levonorgestrel. But perhaps your body would do better on a different hormone like the one in the NuvaRing or other birth control pills specifically drosperinone or norgestimate, etc. or you can consider the copper IUD which has NO hormones.
