Does Braided Line Color REALLY Make A Difference?

Braided fishing line is an extremely durable type of line, which can easily outlast other material lines, however, the one weakness braid has is the fact that extended use will fade the color of braided line. As a professional angler, I’m constantly looking for ways to give me an edge, so coloring braid to blend in with a fish’s environment is a way to do that. Here are some thoughts on why I think it’s important.

If one say it don't matter is a fool. But if you use nylon clear tip, it do not matter so much. I use both, and i avoyed yellow, pink, blue. I use black, grey, white. They are harder to see, but do think, thats good

Miles, I use braid on all my reels spinning or baitcaster and just use a floral leader to the bait whether it's a jerk bait or a jig and adjust the leader length on water clarity. The one execution would be pitching or flipping into heavy cover, but I have had great success using a short floral leader there too. Thanks Steven.

I have a question for you about colors, Miles - Green pumpkin in clear water with a lot of vegetation. I usually go darker, like junebug, because I want my bait to stand out against all that green background. The army wears green for a reason, right? What are your thoughts?

Miles I use a big sharpie marker but it always seems that there is line twist and can be a pain to get it all colored fast. I was considering using black shoe polish, have you ever tried that?
@SonarFishing
@SonarFishing Год назад
No i haven’t tried that. Did you see the video I did showing me using black dip-n-dye? I think that works pretty well too and I like how it apples uniformly.

@@SonarFishing I did not. I will have to try that. Has to be a better way then the sharpie lol

I would think white would be best since it is more to be translucent. Seen a video once where they compared different colors of line . And white was the hardest to see in the water conditions.

Green was very noticeable when it was in clearer water but it worked really well in stained conditions. White and blue were almost invisible in clear water but you could easily see them in stained water.

Well, I am 70 years old and have been bass fishing for over 65 years. My father was an avid fisherman and always took me along. I remember his baitcaster with black braid back in the day before mono. Anyway, I have been using braid for well over 20 years without a leader. I dropshot, wacky rig and all my finesse fishing is with straight braid. I have never been beaten by my partners in tournaments due to the fishing line. I HAVE been beaten because of lure choice. Bass have a pea brain and most people give them to much credit. Why would a bass hit a spinner bait, or a Alabama rig if they are so line shy???? I love it when the so call ed pro says I catch more on floro when fishing Alabama rig because the bass does not see the line. I fished a tournament last Sunday and most people did not catch but one or two fish, I caught over 20 in clear water, line was almost white and I did not have my marker with me. Drop shot for every fish, go figure. I think it is more in the fishermens mind than the fish.

I think there are many things that anglers have a tendency to think are a factor to success but actually are not. However, though I agree bass aren’t always line shy, I do strongly believe there are many scenarios where highly pressured fish, given the opportunity to be skeptical of a presentation (like a slow moving bait) will avoid a presentation where the line is easily visible. Another factor is confidence. I think if you are confident in using highly visible braid in all situations you will be successful a good amount of the time, but many anglers would lose confidence with such a variable being left unchecked and would likely miss opportunities you may not. Additionally, much of what we all do as anglers is to reduce the variables that may prohibit us from missing an opportunity at a bite, so regardless of whether it matters we tend to try to dial in our lure color, size, line visibility and other factors even if it means catching 1 more fish at the end of the day. In the end, if it works for you, keep doing it.

@@SonarFishing I want to thank you for a well thought out response. I am not here to bash anyone but to post my thoughts on the subject. Your buddy Mr Lattimer seems to be very defensive if you dont agree with him.He became very rude when I posted that one of the greatest crankbait fishermen Mr David Fritts fishes cranks on braid and so does Randy Blaunkett. He had a negative comment about Fritts but clear he did not look up and watch the Fritts video. Anyway, Fritts says florocarbon line becomes brittle from being stretched during the fishing day and has broken off fish due to this problem. Also, on a 100 foot cast it is very hard to get a good hook set without using braid. Again, thank you for a nice reply

@@joelambert1676 Joe, thank you for another response. I never felt that your original comment was anything but a further discussion into the topic. I very much enjoy having discussions on fishing even if I don’t agree with everyone’s approach. The beautiful thing about this sport is how personal and customizable individual angler’s approaches can be. I post content to share what I do, and what works for me, but I would never claim that my approaches or concepts are the best for everyone or every situation. There are plenty of people who are obviously not interested in learning new perspectives and are combative with their comments, and in those situations I don’t really care to respond, but for folks like you who are open to a discussion I am more than happy to respond in depth. Thanks for being a SonarFishing viewer Joe!

In all cases you will get more bites with flouro or mono than braid if your fishing something slow where they can get a good look at it. Braid must be used in the shadows or a fast moving bait. Don’t know why I type all of this your are right on point and that is indisputable IMO. But I strictly use Braid to leader these days and like a bright braid with the leader so I can watch my line better. If you think I’m wrong try it then get back to me. I use to be one of those guys.
