Does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Damage Your Body Over Time?
Look, we all love BJJ, but if you’re not training smart, you might just end up walking like a 90-year-old long before you hit your black belt. But don’t stress-most of the damage can be avoided with the right approach. In this video, I’m breaking down the common problem areas (you know, the ones that make you groan when you get out of bed) and showing you how to keep training without wrecking your body.
What You’ll Learn:
Why your neck, back, knees, and shoulders hate you after training (and how to make them hate you less)
How to tap early without feeling like you’ve lost your pride-it’s not worth limping for weeks!
Why mobility and flexibility aren’t just for yogis-they’re essential if you wanna roll well into your golden years.
Strength and conditioning: Yeah, you need to hit the gym too, mate. It’s not just about technique!
How BJJ compares to other activities (spoiler: you’re probably not going to destroy your knees like a marathon runner, but still, be smart)
🤔 So, does BJJ damage your body over time? It can, but only if you let it. Train smarter, not harder, and you’ll be out there rolling when you’re old enough to tell your grandkids you could totally still triangle them.
👇 Got a story about your worst BJJ injury? Drop it in the comments-let’s hear what’s been wrecked! And if you’ve got any tips for recovering faster, don’t be shy.

I'm a 60 year old purple belt, been training for 6 years and I compete (not big comps, just regional stuff). I train 3 times a week, and the off days I lift weights, when I have time, as my job is also physically demanding. What works for me is all things you mention, rest, and safe training, I don't roll with crazy people and the "listen to your body" part, also, consideration towards my training partners, which might not seem it has direct impact on your training, but when you are considerate, people respond to that and that also impacts your training, I have to say I never lack training partners, male and female so I might be doing something right

@kylieminou7775 that's awesome to hear. 60 and still going hard is inspirational. It's right what you say about being considerate to your training partners. That's definitely another really important aspect of training. If you take care of your training partners, they'll take care of you. Thanks for leaving a comment 🙏

Great advice. I will start implementing these. Been training for a year now and recently I started to get pain in one of the shoulders and of the knees. I need to start listening to my body more.

@Mannertheman shoulders a common one aye, and a lot of people just ignore it unfortunately. How are you finding jiu jitsu after training for a year though?

I have a lower back injury now that the doctor says is a stress fracture on the spine based on an xray. I'm so bummed. Like I could push through the pain but I already tried that and it got worse which is why I went to the doctor

@LastRellik that's sucks! Just coming off a big injury myself, be patient with it. Use this time to work on what you can. Get some little grip stemgth tools you can always improve your grips. Watch some bjj concepts and study them. Take notes. Go along and watch the classes take notes. There's still plenty you can work on. And take your recovery seriously let the injury have the time it needs so you can come back stronger than ever.
