I generally carry a G19 with a standard capacity magazine in the weapon. I usually carry a G17 magazine on my person as a backup. However, in both of my vehicles I have 33 round magazines in the console. Two things I learned in Vietnam. 1 you can’t carry too much water. 2 you can’t carry too much ammo. C/2/16 1st Inf Div ‘69. Great video as usual. Always look forward to the next one.

That's one question I had. An extended magazine is harder to conceal, quite a bit heavier and harder to draw. So it would make more sense to carry the standard capacity as a back-up. But stashing them in your vehicles is very smart.

While I went into the service right after Vietnam (1977) the people who trained me in those trades were veterans of that war of multiple combat tours between them, and to a man, they all pounded that rational into my head above all other logistics.... Also my friend who served in 3rd army under Patton's leadership told me the same thing was tought to him 2 wars prior..... I never really had opportunities to talk tactics with anyone who served in WW1 on that personal of a level.....😉 I carry a PT111G2 for personal protection and found that an 18 shot standard mag of the P226 works quite well as a mag that brings the capability of this subcompact up to that of a full sized pistol if needed..... And as I've lived the "Better to have it and not need it, over Need it and not have it" club.... Since it doesn't pose a problem, I like it.....

This is my OPINION. Barring malfunctions, if you have to reload to continue firing in a self defense situation, you have transitioned from a self-defense situation into an actual firefight situation. Two entirely different things and requiring two entirely different courses of action and mindsets. If there is even a possibility of a situation turning into a firefight as a - *single individual civilian* - you need to do everything you can to immediately disengage, escape and evade. Prolonging the encounter will not only increase the odds of death or injury but, again, IMO, possibly lead to severe legal complications for you after the fact. At the end of the day, ALL you are trying to do is save your life.
@xxxYYZxxx

I love your response. If someone needs a 32rd 9mm mag, it means they're using the wrong weapon in the first place. My idea is using a snubnose hammerless, plus a combat 9mm (or full size revolver + compact 9mm), with the idea of NOT carrying extra mags. If ~20 rounds isn't enough I'd be more concerned with finding cover, escaping, and/or calling the cops than an extra mag. As for why I like wheel-guns, I in a true emergency, I simply can't believe that any other handgun gets the FIRST round on target faster than a revolver.

Seriously, this is a question? I used to carry a subcompact with a 10 round magazine, but had 15 round magazines if I needed to reload. No difference in accuracy, but it was 50% more ammo after a reload. That's a more realistic scenario. The big advantage of the 10 round magazine was specifically that it was easier and more comfortable for concealed carry. If I needed to reload, well I wasn't worried about concealed carry anymore.
@laurenbish3116
@laurenbish3116 3 года назад
Yes, with my SIGs, there are the flush fit mags 12-18 rd depending on the gun, and then there are the plus 2 mags that extend maybe an inch or less. The flush fit mags are usually at least a bit better for concealed carry depending on the holster, its orientation and your clothing/etc., but the extended +2 mags usually don't really make a difference your mag holder, if any, and give you four extra rounds. For my SIGs I can't get a reliable double capacity mag, the only ones available are ProMag junk, so that isn't an option. For some pistols, like Glocks, you can often get a reliable mag with near double capacity, and those might be the Hail Mary last resort mag when all else fails (like one person mentioned, when you transition from a lower intensity self-defense situation where less than 6 shots are required to a full on firefight where you need as much ammo as you can possibly carry).
@jaredwright1655
@jaredwright1655 2 года назад
Definitely agree. The shield plus 9mm comes with a flush fit 10 and a slightly extended 13 with a bulge that would actually help you grip it while reloading. For private security, thats alot of firepower out of sight.

For a while went back and fourth on whether I should go single stack or not... until I found similar research... and some that even claim conflicts are often resolved with around 3 rounds. So I determined the lower profile was worth the limit in rounds. As far as extra mags... I chose slightly extended mags, adding 2 more rounds primarily because they also added an extended grip that goes from 2 finger to the more comfortable 3 finger grip, but I carry two mags for the cases of malfunction, which are the more likely reason for any magazine change, and if that is the case... more mags gives you more options... rather than one extra high capacity mag that could be a waste, if it malfunctions just a few rounds in.

The only time i think having an extended backup mag is really useful is for micro pistols where the normal grip length doesn't allow for four fingers. You might not want to carry it with the extended mag normally because it's more difficult to conceal but the extended (in reality normal sized) mag actually helps you shoot better because you get a full grip. Also, for some guns like an xds 45, going from 5 rounds to 7 might actually help since you start with so few.

This is almost certainly true. Sure some extended magazines are reliable, but a quality magazine with lower capacity will almost always be more reliable than a quality extended magazine. The question becomes at what capacity does the magazine become too unreliable to be worth the tradeoff.

There is a reason why PCCs in 9x19 with proprietary mags, have curved mags (and are double feed, but that's another issue). 9x19 has tapered case. As is the case with any tapered case, once you go above certain capacity, you have to curve the mag or you loose reliability. How much you can get away with depends on how much the case tapers.

Agree. 7 or 8 rounds is most likely more then enough for civilians. Carry an extra mag in case of a mag malfunction. The extra ammo is a plus the average civilian will not need. Imagine a mass shooting in a mall where the good guy thinks he will spend so much time in a shoot out that requires him to shoot 30 rounds. Most likely the good guy will die before he can shoot 30 rounds at the bad guy. Personally, I carry a 5 shot snub nose revolver. You crank off an avg 15-17 rnd mag much less a 25-30 round mag shooting at someone, no matter the situation/justifiable or not , you're probably going to be in deep do-do, and it only goes downhill from there, If someone gets hit , Criminal, or worse, a bystander. Firing too many bullets and/or wildly, is a callous disregard for human life -so to speak and can be made out legally as well. And it is going to look bad anyway even if you fired just one round, if you have say a 15-17 rnd mag and a 25-30 rnd mag on you, 40-47 rounds total. IMO- that looks worse in your defense than even having 3 15-17 rounds mags would look. If you think you need 45-51-75 rounds on you. I suggest you stay at home, or find a better place to live LOL Also, you need to think about that "judged by 12" issue if something happens, only about half the people in this country might be 2A and give you the benefit of the doubt sometimes, the other half might well throw you in jail automatically for having a 25-30 rnd mag during a shooting . I've been CCW in harm's way for 33 years. 90% of that time was with a 1911 with one 8 round magazine in the pistol and another in reserve. Never once have I felt I needed more rounds. Carried a P7M13 for a few years as well. Again, one mag in the tool and another *just in case*. I always thought "Who the hell is going to need, let alone shoot, 27 rounds?!" I frequently carry a Kahr K9 or T9 now. Again, one single stack mag with another in reserve. Never felt the need for anything extended or belt-fed. @jakedonaldson2956 3 года назад
One of the most common points of malfunction on a gun is the magazine. Carrying a spare is a great idea, and in my opinion, carrying your gun means carrying an extra magazine, all the time. That being said, I would have liked to see Paul test the extended magazine in a more realistic setting for a self defense shooting regarding magazine changes. If your firefight has gone sideways enough to need a reload, you'll probably be behind cover and/or in an irregular position, as opposed to standing squarely on the target at seven or ten yards, wherever he was I don't recall. I think that the combination of high stress, irregular position, and shooting from behind cover could very well change the results. Part two maybe? Great video, as always. Favorite internet gun guy right here. 👍

I like it because it eliminates the chance of pinching on a compact pistol. For example, the APX compact has a grip which I can only get 2 of my 3 lower fingers on. Excellent video. I think it also depends on the type of extended magazine. While a 30+rd mag is unwieldy to carry concealed, there are Beretta 92 magazines that hold 18-20rds yet only extend 1-2" below the grip frame. There are also 1911 mags that hold 9-10rds of .45ACP that also extend 1-2" below the grip frame. These mags make more sense to carry, especially if you routinely carry a round in the chamber (+1) and a full mag in the pistol. As for accuracy shifting.....that only becomes an issue if you're getting into high-precision shots....not something you'll see much in combat shooting scenarios. Thanks for all you do!

My 2 cents would add that in a cww situation it doesn’t make enough of a difference and isn’t worth the cumbersome nature of a long extended mag. But, in home defense situations or with the mentioned suitcase back ups, it does make sense in my opinion. I agree and I often carry a compact double stacked 9mm with a 10 round magazine with my pinkie dangling underneath. Better concealment with the flush mag. My second mag holds 14 rounds and I get a full grip. In that case my accuracy might improve with the extended mag. Still the 38 Super demonstration has me wondering whether the difference matters much. Seems like it can’t really hurt. Great demonstration of the principles in question. As usual Paul has given me something more to think about.

I think you have to be realistic with that logic because there is a diminishing returns effect here. Bear with my pretend "numbers" here: Imagine if just carrying ANY firearm will probably save you in 99% of situations where you are actually able to use the firearm to defend yourself. Carrying a firearm with a reasonable caliber and magazine/cylinder capacity covers for the 9% of those 99% of situations where you're able to defend yourself but you actually need more than a 2 shot .22LR derringer to stop/deter the threat. Now carrying an extra mag covers for the further .9% of scenarios where you'd actually need to reload or circumvent a magazine failure. Now with two spares you're covering that .09% of scenarios where you have some combination of running through 1-2 magazines and/or 1-2 magazine failures. At what point are you already on the ground bleeding out or hightailing it out of there because you're obviously outgunned? My point: How impossibly low does the perceived risk have to get to where the extra precautions stop making sense? Of course you do you, it's your pocket/belt space, but I don't see the point. I get carrying one spare just in case and do so myself, but the "better to have it and never need it..." logic gets weak when you have to stack so many unlikelihoods on top of each other to justify the extremes. If you get caught in that rabbit hole you might as well be wearing body armor and carrying a backup piece (with a spare mag for the backup) just to go on a beer run. ...I just don't see the point, but obviously that changes based on your situation: living in a gangland, walking home through a bad neighborhood every night, being a police officer, soldiering (I carried two weapons and ten total mags in Iraq), etc. Again, you do you, just my two cents.

I carry a glock 43 with tlr-7 light appendix (all Kydex) with a pierce +1 mag in the gun. I took that mag plate to my belt sander and sanded it down as much as possible while still allowing a good pinky purchase with my small hands. Basically it’s now just about the same size (maybe a 1/16” inch longer) as the factory mag but with the additional round capacity. In addition, and the reason I’m commenting here, I carry a +2 mag as backup in a matching Kydex holster: the mag goes left (11 o’clock) and the gun rests about 1 o’clock. I find this to be a very balanced system in so much as how it feels and prints, as well as a pretty adequate amount of firepower with my 16 rounds of +p defense ammo. Oh and I’ve trained pretty extensively with this system and I’m fast…damn fast. Also, I have one more +2 mag and iwb holster for my support hand side at 8 o’clock if I’m headed to the “wrong side of the tracks.” 😉 I’m no math magician but I think that comes out to 24 rounds. If I need more than that I’m running away! (To go get my Springfield AR pistol!)😁
