Champix and Chantix are the brand names of a drug called Varenicline, a drug designed to help with quitting smoking - but does it work, and would this ex-smoker recommend it:? Here I share my experiences with using Champix on two occasions - the first unsuccessful and the second more successful (15 months smoke free and counting).

Yes!!! It absolutely worked for me. I used it once. Took the FULL THREE MONTHS. The crazy side effects (for me) only lasted the first couple weeks or so. I had some crazy vivid dreams and some thoughts about jumping off a bridge or driving my car into a ravine. But no more so then usual. Don't forget people.....you can smoke for some time. My quit date was around 3-4 weeks in. I made it and stuck to it. Sure....I was an absolute asshole for a week or so while my system was purging nicotine. But now 9 months later, I am absolutely smoke free after 27 years. I will NEVER put one of those disgusting things to my mouth again. Although I gotta admit I still dream about smoking often. I feel guilt but then I awake and I'm immediately relieved. I wish the best of luck to whoever uses this drug. IF YOU WANT IT TO WORK THEN IT WILL!!!

Hey Ponchobill, thanks so much for sharing your experience with us :) It's inspiring to know it can be done! I definitely agree, we need to want this thing to work before it does...Congratulations on your quit..here's wishing you every success with the rest of your journey!

I recommend champix too. But only after trying alien carrs easy way. My advice? Be honest with yourself and don't be hard on yourself. 7 days off then a day of smoking doesn't mean you are a failure, just part of the journey to stopping. Doesn't mean you have to give up giving up :)

Thank you so much for this video Chris. I needed to hear someone tell of their own experience so I can see what I might expect. Also, it is good to know what might happen after the course is finished. I have heard of so many people who have gone back to smoking afterward. I start my course tomorow. I am both excited and apprehensive!

G’day Chris. Your story is so familiar to me. This is my second attempt on Champix. This is week six of no smoking and feeling good. The first time round I was totally unprepared when I ran out of those blue wonders. Even now I’m still concerned about my end date. I am working on it though. Working out what I’m going in this situation or that condition..... You know what I mean. Maybe a video about coming off Champix might be good. I did learn one lesson for sure. Don’t kid yourself with “I’ve got this under control. I’ll just have one. It won’t hurt”. YES IT WILL! Great video and to all the people reading this..... Keep the faith. Cheers. Lee

Hi Lee, you're absolutely right - "just one" can still do plenty of damage! Great job on making it to week six, I wish you every success with your journey. A video about coming off Champix would be a great idea, you're right. I'll give that one some thought!

Thank you for your video. I took my last champix pill 4 days ago. I am a bit scared but I don’t want to continue smoking. And I agree with what you said about it not being a magic pill, it is not. You have to have the will and the desire to be done with smoking in order to be successful. Your words are encouraging and I thank you :)

Im glad I found you. I have been trying to quit smoking for about 4 years now. I've smoked from 16 till 26. I've tried everything from hypnotic sessions, nicotine replacement, cognitive behavioural therapy and cold Turkey. Cold Turkey is the one that usually works for me but I only manage to quit from 2 weeks- 3 months. I know I'm very strong willed and I know I can quit smoking I just need to accept outside tools, not rely so heavily on self discipline as this is great but I can only push myself so far. I've been trying to avoid the medication method as I have heard a lot of negative stories and thought to myself I am to strong minded to need medication. I'm seeing now that this medication is a tool that I can use along with CBT

Our experience is very similar! Thank you for making this video. I also tried it 8 years ago, but I messed it up. This time, I am 12 days in, and 3 days smoke free. The side effects have been horrible for me this time. Two days ago was the worst. Terrible nausea, vomiting, and even chills. (No, I am not sick with a flu or cold at all). But I am going to continue to take the pills as I know these side effects are temporary! In the long run it surely is worth it. I tried all natural Gravol for the first time last night, and wow, it really helps with the nausea! After trying every method under the sun, I know this time this is going to work for me!

Yes, it works if you can get past the insane part. I am on my fourth day. When I smoke, it feels like I am not getting any satisfaction now. Can't wait till I do not touch a smoke. :) And I feel EXHAUSTED and brain fog. That is because my brain is not getting any nicotine even though I am still smoking. Now I gotta break the physical part. Main thing is will power after.

Great job on starting your journey to smoke-free living, better things are ahead! You're right,the brain can get a little cranky when it is not getting any nicotine and that does slow people down sometimes - when I went through the exhaustion/brain fog phase, I imagined it was because my body was working overtime to clear out all the gunk from my system, it really helped me to get through by thinking of things that way. Keep up the great work so far! Keep in touch and let me know how you get on! :)

OK so I only on week 2, but I decided to stop on day 3 of the starter kit. So in the video he talks about the side effects. So I feel like throwing up all the time and the 1 at night makes me feel even worse. Now it makes me sleepy, like pass-out sleepy. Then there is the dreams. Its like I am sleeping but so awake in my head. So is it a bad thing if it seems like I am suffering from almost all the side effects mentioned and I am on day 7 or no smoking fully, would it be of if I have a drag or 2.

Hi there, firstly good informative video. I too went through an experience similar to yours and am now in my 3rd week taking Champix for the second time. What I was wondering is how long did you take Champix for? I have a friend who said he struggled with weaning himself off Champix and had to take reduced dosages for a period of time before he could become Champix free. I understand that Champix is not necessarily habit forming or addictive but one can become reliant yes?
@ChrisSkoyles
@ChrisSkoyles 5 лет назад
I took the standard course of Champix but I admit I did occasionally miss days or at least missed one of the two times per day you're supposed to take it. I didn't experience many withdrawals after but I understand quite a few people do. It certainly has that going against it if people are considering using it.

3 months is champix program if you are seeing your nurse or doctor ensure regular check ups on your progress. I have a stop smoking nurse I'm seeing who helped me with advice and then started my champix program. Like I said hens days not one cigarette feel really cool. As for advice it is said that due to weekly updates with the doctor or nurse it should determine whether you need further assistance. Good luck remain in the now and not concern yourself about when 3 maths is up. Positive thinking and give yourself a big pat on the back for doing this.

Congrats on making it to day 70, that's a big achievement in itself :) I'd say around the 90-day mark is when I really started to reap all the rewards of quitting like having more energy etc. Have you looked at some of the other videos on my channel? I made one specifically about having low energy called "Quitting Smoking: Why Am I So Tired?" and another one just recently about depression after quitting smoking - you might find them helpful :)

Is it normal for chantix to take longer for some people? Except for occasional stomach ache and vivid dreams, I haven’t noticed any other effects from this medicine. On day 25 and thinking maybe I should quit taking it. Have had a few people tell me if it doesn’t work in first 2 weeks it’s not going to. Opinions?

Stick with it love. I know it's months later but hopefully you did. This'll be my second day of it so I know nothing yet, but I'm gonna give it a chance to work individually and not be too concerned with what's supposed to happen, cos we're all different.

@@rexcassidy I am glad I came back and read this. First time I tried I stopped after a month as it was not working. I started taking it again and quit after two weeks. I just got a new script and started today. Not even sure if I should give it a shot again. What is the chance if it didn't work the first time after a month it will work now? But, one difference is my desire to quit smoking. I want to quit so bad right now. I am so sick of smoking. I am willing to try anything.

I took champix three years ago and it took me a week to stop. Only recently in February I started smoking and drinking due to depression, and the lockdown didn’t help. But I bought some champix online and even on the 2nd day I didn’t want to smoke anymore, I’m currently on my 6th day and I had a cigarette this morning and it was absolutely disgusting I threw it away, then I started feeling like I was gonna throw up. If anyone is contemplating buying varenicline, just do it!! It’s the best thing out there for stopping smoking I think. Tried patches and gum and it didn’t do anything. Good luck

Please someone answer this! Nicotine stimulates some receptors in the brain and that causes dopamine production, that is what makes us addicted. And champix stimulates the same receptors as the nicotine does but half of nicotine situmulation. That means we are still addicted to sth causes dopamin. So my question is, what happens after we quit champix. What is expected from our brain? Wouldnt it cause kind a withdrawal without nicotine or champix stimulu? I am an addicted for 17 years, i dont know what my brain is gonna do without these "stimulas". Is it possible i would feel good without withdrawal of stimula. Should i see a psyhciatrist? I really need a scientific answer for this question... Btw, it is my 18th day on champix and 6th day of quitting. I am so good with champix, it made me more relax, i broke up my 8months relationship and i dont even feel bad about it, this pill really relaxes me. That is why i am worried what is going to happen after quitting the pill too. I had never been that relax, less stresfull. I am so happy that i am a nonsmoker now😊
@ChrisSkoyles
@ChrisSkoyles 5 лет назад
Hi Betul, great question. I was heavily addicted to nicotine for years, plus a recovering alcoholic - you name it, if there's a substance that exists I'm capable of being addicted to it. My honest answer isn't based on science but just personal experience,. After I quit smoking and stopped using Champix I didn't suffer any immediate adverse effects. There was none of the usual signs of withdrawing from an addictive substance that I'm familiar with. Later, about a month or two after quitting, I started experiencing depression. However, I do also have a history of depression so I believe it may be more linked to that than anything else.
@betulokcan
@betulokcan 5 лет назад
@@ChrisSkoyles thank you! Personal experiencr is more important. May be first month you still had that chemical in your body and after removing it totally it caused depression...i am worried about this because i had never used antidepressants, yes i have ups and downs but never tried pills. I am normally a little melancolic person and i am worried what happens after quitting champix...

I’ll write the scientific answer as a novice med student but unfortunately I don’t have any personal experience with champix : In your brain you have different types nicotinic receptors such as alpha1, alpha2 ect. Champix is a full agonist( a substrate that completely binds to its receptor) alpha1 type. it has also has a partial agonist effect on other type of receptor and unlike nicotine it has less effect of dopamine release. Champix blocks the mechanism of this same receptor to respond to nicotine as well. Dopamine is significantly involved in reward system of the brain. As you have less dopamine released by reduced stimulation of nicotinic receptor you will enjoy the nicotine hit less. So the question is if I stop taking champix would I crave again or even feel depressed? Let’s assume you completed the full treatmen (12 weeks) during this long period of time your body adapted to the changes you made. You forced your body to feel less happy after smoking. So your body starts to produce more agonist for nicotinic receptors. Your dopaminergic system will alter significantly. You will have less dopamine released from the old pathway and it’s supplied by other pathways and sources. Sorry for the long answer. So summarise: champix treatment is long and your body needs a long time to adapt itself to the new situation. Your brain receptors and monoamines within your brain behave differently and therefore you’ll be smoke free
