Are you serious? Do you even know what arbitration means? The meaning of life is that arbitration can be conducted with only one party present. Mearsheimer's action is that when he talks about the state of affairs between China and the US, the English language is anarchic. These two violated almost everything, including the law and the English language. For example, two of them violated the English word "arbitration". In which language can arbitration be conducted with only one party present? In which law can arbitration be conducted with only one party present? So, John works for the CIA. He steals, he lies, he kills the English language, etc.

Is America a democracy or oligarchy moneyocracy? The fundamental systemic differences between USA and China are: 1 There's no slaughter, loot and genocide against natives and ethnic minorities in China, the 'I Can't Breathe' incident never happened in China. 2. There's no forced labouring,, no child pornography, not even a forced tipping in China. 3. The US per capita income is 6.4 times ahead of China's, why we see the homeless everywhere on street in the US but couldn't find such scene anywhere in China? 4. China does not allow 1% of the population to own more than 95% of the population's total wealth. 5. China does not allow its people to die in mass shootings, let alone let school children get massacred by guns. 6. China does not allow the drug problem to plague the country and kill more than 100,000 people every year. 7. China has never invaded other countries or engaged in colonial expansion. 8. China never interferes in the internal affairs of other countries and never seeks and fosters agents abroad. 9. China has never based its foreign policies on 'We lied, we cheated, we stole. It reminds you of the glory of the American experiment(Pompeo)'. 10. China has never sought to dominate the world, nor deprived any country (region) of its right of development. On the contrary, China shares development and prosperity with all trading partners. 11. China will never do anything to weaken or eliminate an opponent in order to win. Instead, China is focused on bettering itself. 12. China never fires missiles at wandering balloons, but heavily invests in better infrastructures so Chinese people can enjoy better life, safety and health. 13. China advocates and practices in 'Unite and Prosper', the US pursues and believes in 'Divide and Rule', one is constructive and one is destructive. 14. China always follows Confucius philosophy 'Seek common interest and reserve difference', the US prefers 'Either at the table or on the menu (Blinken)'. 15. Chinese Communist Party members never act as brokers for the military industrial complex in abroad. 16. China walks the talk with a moral compass, the US talks the walk without any moral compass. Conclusion: China's system truly reflects 'of the people, by the people, for the people', the US system betrayed Abraham Lincoln's idea, it truly manifested 'of the 1% people, by the 1% people, for the 1% people'.

He's not accusing China of anything, he's explaining that we can predict China will do what they need to do to protect their interests within their sphere of hegemony, regardless of whether not it abides "international law." If you think USA is guilty of doing the same, it merely strengthens the argument. When "international law" contravenes the interests of a hegemonic nation, adherence to international law is of secondary importance at best.

I think Bob needs to do a little research into the UNCLOS ruling against China in the South China Sea. It was a not a decision by a court but by a single adjudicator who was effectively in the pocket of the US and paid for by them (even though the US is not a signatory to UNCLOS). Moreover, the ruling was not made with any Chinese representation. The Philippines is a relatively new claimant to these islands while China has a long historical claim that was generally recognised by the US and European powers before the Second World War (conclusive evidence for this was recently produced in a book by a veteran British researcher). The Japanese had occupied the islands during the war and the US promised the Chinese to return them after the war but broke its promise as the Cold War intensified after Mao's victory on the mainland. Then the French in Vietnam illegally seized the islands the majority of which are still held by the Vietnamese and have been militarised. All this is very different from the simple story we are told by the western media.

We pay attention to International Law. You must be joking. The United Nations Charter Article 2/4 ( non violence and threats to other States ) has been infringed by the United States so many times it is difficult to count accurately. The Washington Post gives a figure of 72 times. The United States is a signatory and so is a member of the United Nations and so is bound to its Laws. Why don't they honestly try to follow these laws. China hasn't over thrown any governments, gone to war with any other country ( apart from a border dispute with India ), installed military bases in other countries ( the U S has up to 700 of them ), never had ideas of overseas occupation and colonisation in their 5000 years of history ( plenty of border wars and one disastrous only invasion of Japan ) yet Mr Mearsheimer amazingly is fearsome of Chinese aggression.

@David-Yeung
@David-Yeung 23 дня назад
What is missing in John's analysis is the key cultural and religious differences between East and West. Unipolarity is deeply rooted in the Judeo-Christian belief system where ideas like "God's chosen people", "the right to rule over other nations" are derived. Eastern cultures do not have such grandiose ideas and religious people in the East are more interested in "awakening", enlightenment" or "self-discovery". It's clear that John is opposed to the Ukraine war (Christians killing other Christians) but when it comes to war with China, the US has the "birth right" to fight against a gentile nation who dares to challenge God's chosen people.

This so called "international tribunal for the law of the sea" was put together by a rightwing Japanese nationalist, Shunji Yanai, under the orders of the then Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe. The objective was to promote intentional bias and prejudicial tactics in the court proceedings in favor of the Philippine government and justify Japanese military involvement. It was not sanctioned by the UN. For Mearsheimer to accuse China of violating International Law by not recognizing the ruling of this kangaroo court is pretty flimsy.

Since >40 years China has been making so much peaceful economical and political progress. Instead of following the western consensus and their wishes, like what happened in Soviet Union, Chinese found their own way to their success in all different aspects. Now it is not the time or too late for the westerners to bargain, argue and decide whether they could accept or contain/isolate China, rather how to embrace and cooperate with China. Like or not, China would continue to grow and soon become the no.1 superpower in the world because the reality has been proved that Chinese system is better than those in the west. That would be western another increasing anxiety and frustration. Instead of accusing and embarrassing China, or lecturing Chinese how to do, now it is the time for the western countries to not only beg the Chinese for the help in their western economical decline, like their broken infrastructure, but also learn from China how to peacefully respect and live with each other, instead of “winner takes all”.

Which regime passed the "Invasion of The Hague" Act so that it can invade The Netherlands should the ICC decide to prosecute its politicians and soldiers for war crimes? The list goes on..... Which is why this regime and its chihuahua vassals are always shouting "rules-based order". This is just the regime's way of not conforming to international laws as embodied in the UN Charter and other multi-lateral institutions as it is the biggest breaker of international laws. Instead the rules base order allows it to cook up some rules (which has never been published) and order the rest of the world to obey. International law means *'Rules Based Order'.* And this is what *'Rules Based Order'* means in America : *(1) Rules Based Order is :* If you bomb women and babies in the Middle East, you'll be invited to the Olympics. But if you try to stop NATO from expanding to your border, you'll be banned from the Olympics. *(2) Rules Based Order is :* If the UN Human-rights court tries to investigate US human-rights violations, the US imposes personal sanctions against the judges and their families. *(3) Rules Based Order is :* If the WTO court rules against the US, the US effectively wipes out WTO by 'inviting' those judges to resign and then stopping the WTO from employing anyone to fill those posts. *(4) Rules Based Order is :* Instigating colour revolutions all over the world, and toppling foreign governments. *(5) Rules Based Order is :* If the colour revolution didn't work, they bomb you. For example... The US has only 17 years in its entire history since 1775 been not at war with someone. And since most of these wars were NOT a result of another country coming to the US to kill, they were clearly a case of the US going over to someone else's land to kill. *(6) ....* I'll stop here, because otherwise everyone will know why 'Rules Based Order' is so attractive to ONLY the West but no-one else.

The guest with the blue shirt is very ignorant. Yes no understanding of china. He acts as if capitalism is something new or created by the west. That is such a odd way of thinking because china has been trading for thousands of years. What makes him think that china will not trade in this modern times? Get rid of that word capitalism.

When Zheng He commanded seven treasure voyages across Asia (1400 - 1433), China was the strongest country then. However, no colony was taken, no robbery of the countries that he visited. So assuming that China will do what the US has done is not convincing at all. Tradition Chinese philosophical thinking does have some bearings on the behavior of China.

We missed JM's qualifier in his opening remark - " in East Asia..." When in competition they will ignore. The Chinese are located in East Asia and consider themselves central to it. America has nothing to do with that region other than to assume superiority over the considerations of others in the area. The USA has forgotten the second of their Munroe doctrine of 1823. First part threatens and inssued instructions to the European states to not interfere in their regional area, the second part was " and the USA will not interfere in your areas of influence.

As of today, the whole world knows that the US does not respect the international rules of law. John may be right that in a multipolarity world, China or Russia may do the same even if international rules of law got strengthen. I support Robert's proposal to strengthen the international rules of law when the US is still powerful enough. At least the US got to say something to shape the rules. However, i could not see wise leaders in Dem or GOP today that are willing to create rules that are above them. There's a saying that one will not cry until the last nail got hammered into the coffin. Therefore, the US leaders will not give up their power until the last nail got hammered.

We Hong Kongers have more rights and voting power than when the British was ruling us before 1997. It really shows how naive some westerners are. US and the British does not obey the British Court ruling to give back Diego Garica to the indigenous people. You should mention that too. Macau had their Article 23 passed 10 years after the handover to China. On the other hand, Hong Kong had to fight 26 years in order to get the Article 23 passed as stipulated in the Sino British Declaration. Now we Hongkongers can see the reason behind it. American deep interest in Macau is the factor. No one in the media talked about it.
