Dragon Quest V is a fan favorite some rank among the best RPGs ever. How does it hold up against such a SOMETHING reputation?
Chunsoft's first game for the Super Famicom, Dragon Quest V was originally released in Japan in 1992. It finally received a Western release in 2009 for the Nintendo DS. Subtitled "Hand of the Heavenly Bride", this version later saw iOS and Android ports.

The SFC cover is one of the best from Akira Toryiama! I really love this game, even more than 3.

This is one of those games that put tears in my eyes. But I do really like your point, on how this game's story is very well suited to the videogame format. Or at least, the designers did a good job using the changing gameplay convey the familial themes across the Hero's life.

Thanks for sharing this great review! I haven't played many DQ games, and I was curious about this one. Monster-catching mechanics are actually kind of a turn-off for me, and I knew this game had them, so I was planning to avoid it, but knowing that they're optional helps.

DQ V was a team effort! The story, music, gameplay each contributed greatly. I would say its one of the greatest videogame story because of [spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler] am I right guys?

Your reviews are my go to for retro games. You're always so laid back and I vibe with it. on the SFC the assets by Toriyama felt "HD" back in the day. I think they used the 3 tone shading technique from anime/manga and had it translate from his art to the sprites.

Thanks man! I love how you can instantly tell when a piece of art was done by Toriyama

WITH luck if the 2D/HD remakes of the 1st 3 sell WELL enough I could see the 4th to 6th games getting the same treatment on the Switch/PS5.

It's a shame Square Enix insists on removing the gender selection from the DQIII remake. It will also surely include more censorship. That's going to cost them sales. If only they'd stop doing crap like that, I would buy it.
@veghesther3204
@veghesther3204 Месяц назад
That too but most of the DQ games don't have a gender selection screen at all.

Interestingly, if you do not obtain the horse and wagon, the game will not progress, so it's impossible to skip the monster recruitment mechanic.

What's funny about seeing gameplay from the modern version of the game is that you have 4 party members. In the original SFC version you only had 3 out in battle so when you get your kids the monster party members are almost entirely irrelevant beyond healing from the menu or as an emergency backup lol. What took me by surprise when I played the game earlier this year was the story. What makes it work as a story for the game is how it does the chosen hero trope. I like fun twists on that sort of thing that don't deconstruct and even moreso make the trope more heartwarming. No other game has made me feel so proud over my fictional children lol. You are for sure right in that it only works in the context of a game though. Also a SNES era JRPG that took me 30 hours to beat while having minimal grinding and a post game dungeon after that is an incredible amount of content and I can see how many japanese kids spent their summer vacations on this game. I am not the biggest super fan of the series but it does have a sort of magic that is hard to describe. Regardless still one of the best games I played this year.

Nice writeup. I didn't know the SFC version only had 3 party members; that would def make things more of a challenge. I should play that version sometime. Also, I'm becoming more and more convinced that the monster capture mechanics were tacked on at the last minute 🤣

DQV was a very early SNES game, so it looks more like a NES game with a wider color palette. DQ6 is a huge step up from it, visually.

Dragon Quest 5 is One of the best jrpgs out there and it's still revolutionary due to it's story elements that are still underused today(you are not the hero and you go to a Journey with your family)Gameplay wise you can make a party of monsters only something that only smt used to do back then. Unfortunately many haters Started appearing but they can't ruin the game quality or reputation

Was always a go to FF fan growing up. A few years ago now i decided to play some of the DQ games, this was the first one i tried... It just blowed my mind in such different ways that FF couldnt do. It was nostalgic to me and id never even played them before. I cant quite put my finger on it what this series does, but this is one damn beautiful game and i feel like more general RPG lovers should get started with the series here. Maybe its the accessibility of the platforms? I think for a lot of people an RPG is a sit down with a controller on the sofa vibe, so i can see why they wouldn't like the idea of a mobile version, and the DS version just isnt viable, even to emulate and get the same experience intended. I really hope they get a console/pc port in the future...

I've been replaying DQ6 on the SNES version, and it's a treat-obviously, it's how the game was meant to be experienced. If you ever replay 5, I hope you try it on SNES (with a fan translation)

Dragon Warrior (a.k.a. Dragon Quest 1) was the very first game that got me started on RPG's. Final Fantasy was alright, but the sequels in that series got me hooked! I digress. I also loved Dragon Warrior 2 and 3 as sequel and prequel. When I tried out 4, I found it odd that it had nothing to do with Alefgard at all, but I actually did take a liking to the characters. Although, it was unusual to not play as the actual hero until the last 5th of the game! I actually did get the Nintendo DS copy of Dragon Quest 5, and found it to be a really good sequel to 4! The type of gamer that I am though... Tracking down one of each and every monster that could be recruited into the party... That wasn't easy at all. I actually took a break from the game for a few years when I got fed up with trying to recruit the Liquid Metal Slime (a.k.a. Metal Babble). But last month, I finally did it! Collected all the random recruitable monsters, beat the game, got the last two random recruitables, and then won Starkers and Rebjorn! Working on another play through of Dragon Quest 6 now, as I still have yet to actually play that one all the way through.

Dragon Quest V is amazing on the Super Famicom, three party limit aside, but the best version is definitely the PS2 remake, which received a fan translation that leaves out the terrible written accents of the DS games. It's definitely the best way to replay DQ V.

Oh cool, I'll have to try that version when I replay it. I don't mind the accents as much as some, but they make more sense in games like DQIII or VII

I played a fan translation of DQV's SNES version and absolutely adored it. There was something super comfy about it, and I loved the story. Beat the mobile version when I had down time at work. I plan to replay it again but on the PS2's remake. I'd love to hear your thoughts on DQ8!

If you did valued historical perspective. The emulation or even paying the prince of the SNES version wouldn't be an issue. But instead your yapped a good 4 minutes around it to justify playing some remake on your phone lol.

If you want to be retro or make a retro themed video, I can't believe suffering through a mobile port vs. playing the superior PS2 fan translation or the SFC fan translations. Like why do you keep mentioning Chunsoft or "the writers at Chunsoft" when you're not even playing *their* version of the game? The scenario, plot, dialogue, and design of the game is Armor Project's work (Horii). Chunsoft just implemented it on the SFC. Another developer did the PS2 version and the DS version which the mobile version was based on. Maybe at least read a WikiPedia article as the most basic step of research before making a video on a subject. "The writers" ... Horii.
@rpg_haven
@rpg_haven Месяц назад
I do lots of research, thank you very much. I also think the mobile ports of DQ 4-6 are all VERY good and are a wonderful way to play those games. Have you tried them? I usually do play the original versions of Japanese-only releases with fan translations. Check out the rest of my channel and you'll see that's the case. For Dragon Quest, I happened to play the most recent US releases at the time, so those are the versions I discussed. For Japanese games that didn't get US releases, it can be difficult to discern who exactly worked on what. Chunsoft is listed as the developer of the original version of Dragon Quest V, so that's why I mention them. I don't get too into the development details for games; if technically Armor Project wrote it, thank you for the clarification. But Chunsoft is the listed dev, which is good enough for my purposes.
