In a way yes. When you are on set as an extra you learn specific phrases that are used. You also learn that even though the show might only last an hour when you watch it at home, it actually takes at least 5 long days of filming. And most importantly, you learn how hard the actors really have to work. I remember one particular movie I was working on. We started at 6am and did not wrap until 3am the next morning.

Great advice. I have done a bit of extra work and can say that the key is to set the expectations for yourself that you will gain practical experience and exposure to the processes of making films. This is even more useful if you have a goal in mind so that you can focus on a few aspects of film making. Some days will give you more insights than others but it will at the very least, help you gain confidence in basic direction and structure so that when you are a crew member you will hit the ground running rather than sit there like a bewildered amateur.

Exactly, its what you take from it, two people can have the same day on set, however, the person constantly learning and observing can come away with a lot more!

So, do extra work if you want to and it will help you, but not necessarily your career?

That’s a short version but kind of, of course there are always instances where you can get upgraded to a speaking role which is great but you can’t rely on that as it is pretty rare!
