Great video Justin!…This is perfect video, I have been re-searching this online for awhile, trying to figure out which drum sample software to buy for my money and for my TD-30. You’ve made up my mind EZdrummer 3 is it. I have a small studio I built, Interface PreSonus Studio1824c and for drums Behringer Interface.. Seriously appreciate all your hard working you put into making these videos, plus your honesty about the product and keeping us drummer’s informed. Keep up the excellent work. Thank you again 🥁✌🏻

I really appreciated this tutorial and learned a lot. I've been using EZ and Superior 3 Drums since they first came out and have been into electronic drums from the beginning. You helped me with the latency problem that I've always had. My computers were very fast and had gobs of RAM so I thought that this lag was the nature of the beast. When I first started using EZ Drums, I got such a bad latency that I worked around it by monitoring the outs of my VDrum module that was triggered by Pintech pads and cymbals. I recently I've replaced the VDrum module and most of the pads and cymbals with Alesis Strike Pro gear. When tracking my performance, I would listen via the VDrum out, while recording the EZ sounds. I did a test by recording the VDrum audio along side the EZ Drums and did find a slight latency, with the audio lagging behind the MIDI but not enough to affect my playing. The MIDI signal is always in sync. Now, I only use Superior 3, also BFD, High School Drum Corp, Studio Drummer and other percussion libraries. My DAW is Nuendo 12, running Win 10-64 on a 8-Core XEON with 128 Gb's of RAM and all SSD's. FYI, in Superior 3 the latency control looks different from in your example in EZ, at least on my PC. My buffer choice is not configured in the program but in the audio control panel for my I/O device, a MOTU 2408 PCI, which had been set at 512. I lowered it to 32 , giving me an output latency of 1.1ms and a buffer latency of .7ms. I'll move it down to 16 if there are no glitches. Another thing that you hipped me to was choosing the hardware input. Once I set it to Alesis Strike Pro, the response was perfect with negligible latency. Also, I was able to better tweak the HI Hat open/close and cymbal zone responses. Just when you think you know it all, there's more to learn! I thank you so much.

I just purchased an alesis strike pro SE and one of the decision points was so that I didn't have to buy EZD or SD for a while (possibly ever) because it has such decent built-in sounds. I see EZD probably being phased out as standard modules start to match EZDs capabilities. Fortunately for toontrack they can just up the price for SD to make up for lost EZD sales as this transition takes place, since it will always be the penultimate tool and modules will never be able to come close.

Thank you Justin for this super helpful video! I have EZ2 and was wondering about the custom midi mapping capabilities since EZ2 basically has none. Toontrack had originally said if you wanted custom midi mapping and velocity control, you would have to buy Superior Drummer and it would not be available in an EZ product. I'm super happy they changed their minds (probably due to enough negative feedback from people like me lol). I will definitely be upgrading to EZ3 in the coming months, thanks Toontrack!

I would encourage you to jump-in the pool. Seriously, I am quite surprised and indeed pleased with EZ3- and I expect the price will only increase as the software gains positive reviews and acceptance. I would say this will have value in the $300-$400 US range. The ability to simply import a mp3 track and get recognition for midi is cherry on the cake. Yup, they did a pretty good job IMHO. I still use the first ez drummer, with expansions of course, and it does a great job for what it is. I use it with my old Alesis e-drums, but because of the latency of my setup, i only use it for studio purposes. The built in sounds of the e-drums are okay for writing, and practicing anyway, the sounds should pop on the recording, and they do (if my mixing and mastering is on the spot of course)

Roland TD-20 module, a desktop PC (Core i5-4570 - quite old, 8GB RAM, SSD), Behringer UMC 404HD audio interface; I use latency 128 at 48KHZ. Software Superior Drummer 3 (currently), few years ago EZdrummer 2. I use this configuration live at my church in Romania and it works flawlessly. No built-in sounds can match the quality of these libraries. P.S. Few years ago I used Roland TD-4 module which had issues with latency. With the same audio settings in software and interface all latency issues went away by simply switching to Roland TD-20 module.

Thanks for this video, man! 🙂 I watch your channel pretty regularly. Own a Roland TD25K set that I've used for years now, and have gotten a lot of mileage from. Within the past 6 months, _"upgraded"_ (IMO) the older TD25 module to the TD17. Not that the preset sounds on either of those are bad, they're not, but... I think it's time to explore other options. Seems like this will be the ticket, for me. _-Cheers!_ 🍻

I must say that the TD17 is considered quite the downgrade. The TD17 is the successor to the TD11/15 modules, whereas the TD25 is the predecessor to the TD27. You're giving up positional sensing and you aren't gaining anything with the TD17 as far as i know? No more expansion ports, same crappy roland sounds. If you're going to use a plugin why on earth would you go from a 25 to a 17???

@@fVNzO The 17 _technically_ has better on-board sounds, as its library is based on the TD-50 engine. _(Whereas the 25 pulls from the older TD-30 line.)_ Plus, the 17 has a bit more features in terms of customization. _(Strainer adjustment, mic placement, room size, ect.)_ Little things like that, which... IMO make it better, overall.

@@davidjlosi Well, all of those are fairly unimportant to me personally. Especially because the TD17 is quite the downgrade compared to the TD50. And with the TD50 already being in the bottom half of sound quality in the industry, i feel like giving up positional sensing was a bad move. That's really nice for superior drummer.

I personally suggest td27. It’s a bit more but u get digital inputs so it’s only module to give 2 hi hat. Snares and rides. Perfect for expanding

@@Derfen81 nope, the digital inputs disable analogs you don't get two of any of them.

Hi Justin! This is a neccessary review. Many guys just reviewing from the DAW drum sampler song writing point of view. If I had the EZD3 available 3 years ago, I thing I wouldn't have purchased SD3 one year ago, I guess. Now you get an awesome remapping tool. Velocity remapping curves ... Nice! AND - did you mention that: You now can "tune" the drums. It's no longer just pitch. I think they throw their retuning algorithm into the package. I mean I really love the velocity remapping of the PER ARTICULATION in SD3 and the mixer (adjusting surgical like bleeding things), adding more kit parts. Some more articulations like hihat, cymbal bell, bow etc. And of course the stunning SDX' . The snare positional sensing feature... I mean I got it a crossgrade for 270€/300$. And I thing, it was worth it. Latency, audio buffer settings: about 3ms output latency at 64 samples buffer setting, 44.1kHz, 24bit. I got here a PC that I build in 2013 (Win10). Really. I mean, I put in 16 GB RAM, INTEL i7, and this days with several SSD for SD3 samples and other VSTs, and 2 years ago a nvidia GTX 960 graphics card for the 3 4K displays. USB interface is a jurassic M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8x8 (Released in 2007 ?). I grabbed it used in 2011 and it's still totally fine. I testet a new MOTU M4 but in terms of latency in my config it actually performs worse that the M-Audio. So I didn't replaced it. The problem will be the drivers some time .. but, we will see. So, that's fine for playing the edrums alone or playing along to songs. I get some crackles when using several VST instruments, so I have to bounce out the other VST tracks or need to rise the buffer size to 256 samples but... that seems to be fine. Thank you, for your content. Greetings from Germany! This is my setup tinyurl.com/my-edrum-setup

Good video, I’ll try EZ Drummer 3 on my set. I used asio4all for years, but the last few times I tried to use it everything went to crap. Had the right versions, checked everything, so I don’t use it.

Thanks! My TD1 control is a bit limited. I'm thinking of upgrading it. Suggestions?
