Last year, Invercargill won the title of ‘NZ’s Shittest Town’ for the first time.
Despite Re: News journalist Baz Macdonald saying Invercargill “looks a bit fucked” in 2019, he’s seen the city make big improvements in the years since and wondered if it deserved to win the title this year of all years.
So he took to the streets over Invercargill to ask people if they thought it deserved to hold the title.

I left Invercargill and spent 7 years in London and surrounding areas...I came home to having a mortgage free, warm, well insulated house, ten minute drive to work with free parking close by...ten minute drive to a beautiful beach, 2 hours to Queenstown, less time to Te Anau...I recall being on a UK motorway and traving 8 miles in 5 hours through sheer volume of traffic, something I experienced during a recent road trip to Auckland...almost 3 hours from Papakura to the North Shore...if there's a gang problem here, its not overly visible...and certainly not as bad as other areas...As for the weather, my first British winter nearly sent me home...bitterly cold... Southland weather can be challenging, but July is the worst month. Take a look at recent events up north, flooding in Auckland on Anniversary day...total disaster, lives lost, property destroyed...then came Cyclone Gabrielle, huge damage everywhere...Southland gets wet, cold and occasionally really unpleasant, but there are upsides... People up north may criticise the South, but Im wondering if those affected by flooding etc in the Esk Valley were critical of the large group of Southland farmers who loaded a convoy of trucks with fencing gear and headed up there and got stuck in repairing farm fences...??

Seriously, they didn't pick a good range of people to talk to. Virtually no one over 35. I moved from the Bay of Islands to Invercargill in 2010 and don't feel the weather is a down grade at all. A bit colder but we don't suffer from the humidity here and it's definitely warmer than the 12 winters I lived in the Waikato where the frosts and damp were horrid. Invercargill has heaps of events on here. There are always shortages of accommodation for visitors as there is a lot going on here with such as annual events like the Tour of Southland, Oyster Festival and Burt Munro to name a few. I agree that there is not a lot of night life here for young people though. One of the best things is hardly any traffic. You can drive anywhere in the city most times in no more than 15mins

Invercargill has some competition for being one of the crappiest cities and towns. If you ever visited the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the City of Corner Brook is also the same way. Like Invercargill, Corner Brook is also a natural resource intense town as its home to the only Pulp and Paper Mill left in that Canadian province. The city also doesn't have much shopping and employment opportunities due to its poor business climate, limited shopping and recreation opportunities, poor public transit service, and lack of jobs for young people. Corner Brook is also dealing with a "grey tsunami" of its own as nearly 1/2 the city's population are seniors and low income earners, which makes it difficult for aspiring entrepreneurs to set up shop. Winters are also bad as they get snow almost everyday, mostly "sea effect snow" from the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
@grgmetube
@grgmetube 6 месяцев назад
I just looked around Corner Brook with google Earth. Not totally depressing, it has quite a few hilly views and looks like not a bad bay. The imagery of the central area was from late 2019, so might have been a few changes since.
@HalifaxHercules
@HalifaxHercules 6 месяцев назад
@@grgmetube I agree that Corner Brook has some nice highland views, much like most of Western Newfoundland. At the same time, Corner Brook faces an uncertain future as their main employer, Kruger owned Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, is struggling as newsprint demand dwindles, leading to worries that the mill will shut down for good. Saltwire Network and "The Chronicle Herald", Halifax based privately newspaper media companies owned by the Dennis and Lever families, recently filed for bankruptcy, which will further hurt demand for newsprint. The good news is that Kruger are planning to diversify Corner Brook Pulp and Paper's product line away from newsprint, and focusing on cellulose fibre for biofuels, textiles, concrete, and wood pellets. They also plan to sell their logs to other mills, and also excess electricity to NL Hydro to meet the province's power demands. Corner Brook is now facing numerous challenges, including a large senior and low income resident population, which makes it difficult for growing local businesses as they will typically go to big box chain stores for their groceries and essentials In addition, the city's services are not very good as their public transit system operates on weekdays only, and persons with disabilities have no day programs.
@grgmetube
@grgmetube 6 месяцев назад
@@HalifaxHerculesSounds to a certain extent like Invercargill. There is a growing senior population here and the paper mill at Mataura closed a long time ago. A lot of government service industries moved out of provincial areas during the 1990's. The island harbor at Bluff brcame largely redundant with its meat loader machines. That was built in late 1950's early 60's era. I think it was most paid for by Southland but I'm not certain if it was superceded with the port Chalmers container port before there was money payback for the investment. There is now talk of hydrogen production as the Tiwai smelter was going to close but it may not close now because the government reduced its electricity cost. I don't know if hydrogen as a fuel will ever be considered economic. There is talk of a computer server data centre at Makarewa. I have not seen any sign of construction yet. Something like a data centre could attract a lot of technical people that would spawn other computer related jobs. It would use quite a bit of the electricity that was going to be surplus, from Manapouri if the smelter was closing. The smelter closing might have been a good thing if it caused many more technical industries to spawn. The government may not see any need now. I do think towns/cities need to attract people that are in the future industries and jobs otherwise they may die.

I've been living in Invercargill for the last 15 years. It's an okay town but the weather is shit. Job options down here are career limiting with little to no opportunities. It would be a metropolis with hardly anything to provide enough food or money for everyone. It would not just be Invercargill that would force attract people. It would be south of South America.
