James 2:24 says that “a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.” Does this verse refute the doctrine of justification by faith alone? From one of our live events, Stephen Nichols, Steven Lawson, and Burk Parsons examine this text in its context.

Right. James (although he quotes Genesis 15:6) isn't talking about the same quality of faith. James is talking about faith in the mere existence of God. "Ye believe in one God, ye do well. The devils also believe and tremble." This is not the kind of faith that Paul is talking about but James uses it to debunk Paul's message, mission and ministry. Genesis 15:6 (in the Septuagint) says it like Paul quotes it in Romans 4. "Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness." The later Masoretic Text says, "Abraham believed in YHWH and it was counted to him for righteousness". It's not belief IN God that counts and everybody acknowledges that. Abraham believed what God had promised him and that's why he was justified. It had nothing to do with what Abraham was doing for God now or in the future. This is why James' argument is so bogus. Abraham was justified because he believed God's promise - NOT BECAUSE HE BELIEVED GOD EXISTED. That's ludicrous. Nobody has EVER taught that but that's the strawman that James is debunking. Look, the contradiction looks like a contradiction because it IS A CONTRADICTION! James designed it to be a polemic against the doctrine of justification by faith only.

Some Protestant Reformers believe that "BEFORE and AFTER" they received their FAITH in Christ thru GOD'S GRACE, that they DO NOT need ANY GOOD WORKS/DEEDS (Charity of Love)... But the vast majority of Christian Churches including Greek and Roman Catholics worldwide, believe only in "BEFORE" they receive "FAITH in Christ thru God's GRACE," which does not need any amount of Good Works/deeds (Charity of Love) or sacrifices (animal) or to follow any commandments of the Law of Moses for it is all useless to God, after Christ's sacrifice His own BLOOD and died on the Cross for the Sins of Mankind... for it is a FREE GIFT of God, just like our FREEWILL... But "AFTER" we (Christians) received our FAITH thru God's Grace, we need to follow and practice the Commandments of Christ about doing Good Works/Deeds (Charity of Love) for thy neighbors and foes alike... to MANIFEST/JUSTIFY our FAITH with our CHARITY OF LOVE... Christ said, (John 15/paraphrased)..."I AM (Christ) the True VINE, you are the BRANCHES (Believers/Christians), my Father is the GARDENER (God), anyone who is "ATTACHED" to the VINE (Christ) that does not BEAR FRUITS, even after the Gardener (God) had PRUNED the Branches BUT still does not BEAR FRUITS, will be CUT-OFF/TAKEN AWAY the Branch/es (believer/s) and THROW them in the FIRE (punishment of Hell/not saved)... Take note: BEAR FRUITS means to "DO" (verb=action) the CHARITY OF LOVE based upon Christ's Teachings and Commandments... For "FAITH ALONE without GOOD WORKS/DEEDS (Charity of Love) is a DEAD FAITH" (not saved)... James 2:14-26/paraphrased... St. Paul himself attested and wrote before he was executed (beheaded), that "St. Paul had RAN (done good work/deeds) to the FULLNESS (Fullest) to FINISH the RACE"... St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans was taken out of context and meaning by some Pastors... During the time of St. Paul preaching the Gospel, most of his audience are Gentiles and Jews, most of them knew the Law of Moses, that one must need to do GOOD Works and Animal Sacrifices in order to have favor or be accepted by God... but the New Gospel that St. Paul is teaching is the Law of Christ, that after Christ sacrifice His own Blood at the Cross, died, resurrected and ascended back to Heaven again... All good works/deeds and any Sacrifices are NO longer pleasing (useless) in God's Eyes... God wants us now, to believe, accept, repent, and baptize in the Holy Trinity, to Christ Jesus as our Savior/Messiah and the Son of God and Man, thru God's Grace "FIRST" without (NO) any Good Works, and Sacrifices (Law of Moses) required/necessary/needed for us to "BOAST OF"... that is the true context and meaning of St. Paul's Epistles (letters) to the Romans and Corinthians... But "AFTER" we received our FAITH in Christ thru the Grace of God, this is the time we are "ATTACHED" to the True/Real VINE (Christ) and we must/need to BEAR FRUITS (to do Good works/ pleasing to the Eyes of God, even if or after God had PRUNED the branches), we (Christians) must/should PICK UP (verb=Action) our own CROSS (LIFE's journey on Earth w/ Christ) and follow/ obey Christ... St. Paul set (made) an example for ALL OF US believers... "RUN (Verb=Works/Deeds) TO THE FULLEST TO FINISH THE RACE"... Facts and Truth, Biblically speaking... Amen.

It's God's grace through our faith that saves us. Without that grace, we cannot even be given the measure of faith with which to believe in Salvation. This used to be preached and taught so much more intently when I was first a Christian over 40 years ago. We were consistently reminded of this very important fact, and I have to wonder what happened. Martin Luther was doing the best he could during the time he had with which to reform things. He based his findings about Sola Fide on the verse in Habakkuk that says "the just shall live by faith". But we need to understand who the "just" are: Those who have been saved by the grace of God, and are continuing to "grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18 It's those who have received "justification". "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast." Eph 2:8,9 True saving faith through God's grace will produce a godly life, the continuation of the ministry of Jesus in the believer's life, and His mission in this world. That is what proves a person has been truly converted, but it is not what saves them. If it was, we could have just stayed under the old covenant because that's how it operated. We are saved by grace "through" faith, which will produce the right life and actions; it will produce good fruit which is love for one another, the sharing with and caring for one another which was being practiced in the earliest church as recorded in the Book of Acts. "You shall know them by their fruit," Matt 7:15 Whom shall you know? Those who have been saved by God's grace through the measure of faith given them by God; a measure which will continue to grow and strengthen during the person's entire life.
@doriesse824

Somewhere along the line it's been summed up as: Grace alone, through faith alone, by Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. Grace must always come first, then if there has been a true conversion, good works will follow which give evidence to God's grace and our faith.

Faith alone without acting on it is a good description of Buddhism. Faith and works are our responsibility as Christians. Abraham acted on his faith. Paul doesn’t deny the need for us to act on our faith. He tells the Jews of his time, that expecting salvation by only following the law isn’t enough. Christs’ message to us is to act on our faith, and it is found in Christs’ first parable, that of the Good Samaritan. Both Paul and James would agree on this. It is a powerful message to all of us. Christ is clear in his message, he expects each us, to act on our faith. As for Justification, that is solely up to God. So leave that to him. Embrace our faith, follow Gods commandments and follow the golden rule. It is not complicated.

No it does not contradict justification by Faith Alone 1- James, the Epistle's Author condemned the Judaizers at the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15 who were seeking to add requirements to the cross of Christ for Salvation 2- James is writing to saved people. In James 1:2, he addresses them as "My Brethren". 3- Verse 2:14 says, "Can that Faith save him". It is obvious that James is distinguishing a dead faith and a living faith. A dead faith which is cheap grace cannot save but a living faith can. A living faith is seen by it's fruits. See James 2:15-17. Both James and Paul in Romans 3-4 refer to the Patriarch Abraham as an example. James refers to Abraham's willingness to offer up Isaac in Genesis 22. Yet prior to this, even prior to his circumcision in genesis 17, Abraham had already been declared justified by God for believing the promise in genesis 15:6. So no, James 2:24 is not condemning justification by faith alone, rather James is condemning antinomianism. James is showing that a claim to regeneration is verified/vindicated by it's fruits.

In all of these faith vs works discussions there seems to be a large distinction between justification and then the work of the spirit. The bible tells us these are a part of the same program and are not that distinct. Emphatically, we cannot through any of our works make ourselves just before God. ONLY the work of Christ does that. Multitudinous scriptures tell us that. Then with a right relationship with God can we do good works if we allow Christ to live our lives for us through the Holy Spirit. It is not our works, it is our saying to God at baptism I have laid my life down to Christ to use it as he will. A watery grave as Paul says. Coming up from that watery grave, is where the confusion seems to arise. Now that we can allow Christ to live our life through His justification, we must do that. We must allow God to purify us through Christ working in us ( I John 3:3). If we don't, there are many scriptures that tell us that God will not continue to justify us (unless we repent anew of course). James 2:44 is one of them. The parable of the talents is another, Rom 2:13 is another one. They all say that if you are not in this program to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, we in essence have not repented of our sins and the Holy Spirit is not in us (Acts 2:38). We have to exhibit Christ in our lives (not perfectly, but continually demonstrating our faith) throughout our christian life. There are things we must do, but again it is not us who do them. We have laid down the old man and want Christ to live in us (Gal 2:20)

Paul explains this in Romans 4 that justified by works is not before God. James also states that 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Romans 4 4 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Let us not put God in the "BOX"!... who are we to decide for God whom He will give salvation?... The Thief on the Cross with Christ Jesus was guaranteed salvation by Christ Himself, with only his (Thief) genuine/truthful Faith ALONE thru God's Grace... The Thief was not Baptized, nor even have the Charity of Love (Works/Deeds)... When we initially received FAITH from God, it does not necessarily mean that we are already Truly in Love with God at once from that moment we accepted God... "True Love" develops thru our works/deeds as time goes by... FAITH Alone thru the Grace of God had opened the mind, heart, and soul of the dying Thief to believe/accept/repent his sins against God and Christ Jesus accepted him (Thief) without Baptism, without Good Works/Deeds of Charity of love... and Christ promised him with salvation at the judgment day of God Almighty... After FAITH Alone, thru God's Grace that comes first to a person, Faith alone will open our mind, heart, and soul to "TRUST by believing," followed by "acceptance and repentance" to our sins BEFORE "Baptism and Good Work/love/hope/charity begins/starts"... "Baptism" and "Good Works" are not necessarily needed/required for salvation in "some circumstances" (exemptions) like Jews/Atheist/Gentiles dying in bed, hospital, battlefield, places of accidents, and imminent death... We can still be forgiven for our sins and receive Salvation while we are still in our "last breath of life" (dying imminently) without Baptism and Good Works/Deeds (Charity of Love)... Biblically facts... No human beings would be able to believe or accept/repent or to love, nor to undergo Baptism and to do Good works... without the FAITH Alone thru God's Grace that comes first to every person... Only a low I.Q. person with low comprehension would say otherwise... We do not need the I.Q. of Einstein to understand logically and reasonably what I have written... There is a saying, "for a close mind, heart, and soul person, NO ANSWER POSSIBLE, but for an open mind, heart and soul person, NO POSSIBLE ANSWER NEEDED/REQUIRED." Facts and Truth, biblically and logically speaking... Praise and thanks be to God, in Christ Jesus... Amen.

The real interpretation is that Paul says that we are justified by faith, not by works of the LAW and James says that we are justified by GOOD works and not faith alone. Theres nothing in James that indicates that the justification hes talking about simply refers to only vindication amongst men. Another thing too is that Paul is talking about being born again (which is by faith alone) and James is talking about our growth in justification by good works after we are born again.
@jvlp2046

My understanding of "Justification by Faith Alone" means thru the Grace of God, "FAITH" (not work) must come FIRST "alone" before "GOOD WORKS" (Charity of Love/Deeds) that are pleasing in the sight of God, begins/starts... It can not be WORK alone first before FAITH or both Faith and Work thru Grace justifies us at "the same time"... Our Faith Alone in God must come "FIRST" to each individual, then through our Faith in God... the FRUITS of Good Works (Charity of Love/Deeds) will manifest or reflect on us thru the grace of God in Christ Jesus as "EVIDENCE" to our Faith... Yes, it is true... the Bible said, "FAITH without WORK is a dead faith"... but it did not say,... "WORK without FAITH is a dead work."... Christ said, No works/deeds of man can be justified in the sight of God unless Faith thru Grace of God must come first to man... and that Faith is thru HIs Son, Christ Jesus... after that, our Charity of Love/Deeds begins/starts throughout our life in Christ and that is where our DEEDS will be judged by God on His Judgement Day (Rev. 20:12 / Roman 2:6/14:10-12)... Therefore, FAITH "alone" must come FIRST before Good Works (Charity of Love/Deeds) begins/starts for those who truly repented and believe in God... Can not be the other way around... Amen.

I thought that folks would be interested to know that Martin Luther wrote the following in his Preface to the Epistles of Saint James and Saint Jude: "[James] does violence to Scripture, and so contradicts Paul and all Scripture. He tries to accomplish by emphasizing law what the apostles bring about by attracting men to love. I therefore refuse him a place among the writers of the true canon of my Bible; but I would not prevent anyone placing him or raising him where he likes, for the epistle contains many excellent passages. One man does not count as a man even in the eyes of the world; how then shall this single and isolated writer count against Paul and all the rest of the Bible?"

So let's say, God puts some vision and ideas in my mind about doing something. So should I just show to God that I have faith in Him by praying and waiting for that vision and idea to become a reality itself or I should work to make it happen? Let's say I wanna plant a fruit tree. Should I just pray and wait for God to plant that fruit tree for me in a miraculous way or I should go and buy the seeds and do the rest of the work to show that I have faith In God?

I think most people misunderstand this. What the Word is saying is that salvation is by faith alone by accepting what Christ did on the cross so that the plan of God to reconcile us to Him cannot be hijacked......It was His and His alone to give to us where we then accept by faith......that said.......there are then many many other scriptures that says that there must be works after that otherwise you lukewarm and you will be spit out........

Christ be with you the thing is the bible never says once that we are salvation is by faith alone that is a lie that is said over and over until it is believed. there is a difference between being saved and salvation Being saved is the forgiveness of our past sin but to have salvation, to inherit Gods kingdom we must obey Christ. this false teaching produces the fruit of apathy to God making it unnecessary to love him. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Why did James try to tell Paul to submit to the Jewish laws and acts 21?
@robmarshall956
@robmarshall956 2 года назад
James is refuting the belief that a person can have faith without producing any good works (James 2:17-18). James is emphasizing the point that genuine faith in Christ will produce a changed life and good works (James 2:20-26). James is not saying that justification is by faith plus works, but rather that a person who is truly justified by faith will have good works in his/her life. If a person claims to be a believer, but has no good works in his/her life, then he/she likely does not have genuine faith in Christ (James 2:14, 17, 20, 26).

NT was written in Greek and Greek tense of the phrase "justified by faith" does not support a completed justification by faith and the person remains justified ever since. "Justified by faith" appears four times in NT (Rom. 3:28, 5:1, Gal. 2:16, 3:24) - the one in Rom. 3:28 is in Greek passive present tense, while the rest is in Greek passive aorist tense. If Scripture teaches faith-alone justification then the Holy Spirit would inspire Paul to write that phrase in Greek passive perfect tense. Genesis 15:6 says that faith is counted to him [Abraham] as righteousness, which Paul cited in Rom. 4:3. Psalms 106:31 says "And that was counted to him [Phinehas] as righteousness from generation to generation forever." (ESV). What was counted (the same verb in Hebrew as in Gen 15:6) as righteousness, is NOT faith, as it is written in Psalms 106:30.

It is our faith in action through obedience that saves us. Being saved is being born again and just as physical birth is the end result of a process so is spiritual rebirth. The first step is repentance. Repentance is an act of obedience we must choose to do after we believe. Repentance is incomplete without water baptism for the remission of sins. Remission of sins is basically the Holy Spirit, because of the shed blood of Christ, spiritually cleansing the " temple" of our body in preparation for the occupancy of the Holy Spirit. Then we must recieve the Holy Spirit. The Word "recieve in the new testaments' original Greek means " to take hold of". We do so in prayer as we rise up out of the baptismal water. The Holy Spirit baptism is how the Holy Spirit is recieved. It is to be filled to overflowing. Once the Lord answers our prayer and fills us we must then surrender the one member of our body that we alone cannot " tame" and that is our tongue We continue to yield it, I just opened my mouth and started relaxing my tongue, until the Holy Spirit enables us to speak in the spiritual language that our English translation calls " tongues". Once this happens it triggers the fillings' overflow while at the same time the Holy Spirit becomes one with our spirit. We have now been born again having recieved the Holy Spirit.

Repent means to change your mind.Greek -> Metanoeo or metanoia (re think, change mind, after thought) it does not have an automatic meaning to feel sorry for sins or to turn from them. In the case of salvation it means to change your mind from unbelief to belief in Jesus and the cross. The English Repent definition is very misleading.
@robertnieten7259
@robertnieten7259 6 месяцев назад
@theservant752 The definition of repent you gave is correct. However, being saved is also being born again, and just as physical birth is the end result of a process ,so is spiritual rebirth. Repentance is incomplete if not followed by water baptism. True repentance must be demonstrated by an act of obedience, which water baptism is. When John baptized stood in the Jordan river and the people stood on its banks repenting ,he said," Bring forth fruit meet for repentance"(Matt.3:8). The Word " meet", in the original Greek, means " that which accompanies".
@theservant752
@theservant752 6 месяцев назад
The thing that should follow repentance is to believe in Jesus Christ, that he came in the flesh, was crucified to death for our sins, rose again on the third day. If you believe this you are born again and saved. Bring forth fruit(doctrine) meet(that which accompanies) Repentance(change of mind) Fruit is for example doctrine of false teachers\prophets\pharisees. Matthew 7:15-20 (15) Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (16) Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? (17) Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. (18) A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. (19) Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. (20) Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. @@robertnieten7259

1 Corinthians 3 God’s farm, God’s building 5 So what d’you suppose Apollos actually is? What d’you think Paul is? I’ll tell you: servants, through whom you came to faith, each one as the Lord gave. 6 I planted and Apollos watered, but it was God who gave the growth. 7 It follows that the person who plants isn’t anything special, and the person who waters isn’t anything special; what matters is God who gives the growth. 8 The person who plants and the person who waters are just the same, and each will receive his own reward according to his own work. 9 We are God’s fellow workers, you see: you are God’s farm, God’s building. 10 According to God’s grace, I laid the foundation like a wise master builder, and someone else is building on it. Everyone should take care how they build on it. 11 Nobody can lay any foundation, you see, except the one which is laid, which is Jesus the Messiah! The coming day, the coming fire 12 If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass or straw- 13 well, everyone’s work will become visible, because the Day will show it up, since it will be revealed in fire. Then the fire will test what sort of work everyone has done. 14 If the building work that someone has done stands the test, they will receive a reward. 15 If someone’s work is burned up, they will be punished by bearing the loss; they themselves will be saved, however, but only as though through a fire. 16 Don’t you see? You are God’s Temple! God’s spirit lives in you! 17 If anyone destroys God’s Temple, God will destroy them. God’s Temple is holy, you see, and that is precisely what you are.

(rom 6:4) As does St Peter Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Act 2:38) and most importantly Jesus Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:5) you seem to thin you know better but since you didn't die for my sins I'm going to trust Jesus and his Apostles on this. Also are you suggest the Gospel you follow has no necessity to follow the teaching of Christ. that's not good Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. (2 John 9-11) that would be mocking God Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Gal 6:7-9) Come to Christ

What did Jesus say, "On this hangs all the Law and the Prophets"? Mt. 22:40 - On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. In other words, "Love God and love your neighbor" is the verse that determines your whole understanding of the word and nature of God. In general, you need to take into account the context of the whole canon but to say that we NEVER do this is to deny the teaching of the Savior. In fact, the Savior Himself is the single point upon which the whole canon hinges. Without Jesus none of that text is worth anything. The reason for nation of Israel itself goes away without the Messiah.

Justification of "FAITH" (alone/only) by the Grace of God, comes "First" by Belief and Acceptance of Jesus is the Son of God and Messiah/Christ, then by Repentance, and Baptism before the Justification of Good Work/Deed (Charity of Love) that is pleasing in the Eyes/Sight of God begins/starts... @@jvlp2046 Christ be with you Let's look at what the scripture you ignored says. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. (Rom 6:3-4) Notice this being born again to new life occurs in Baptism Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (1 Peter 3:21) Notice it is through repentance in baptism we are saved. Lets look at another And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. notice that we must repent and be baptised for the forgiveness of sin. faith alone means nothing. That is what St James is saying. That despite being give the promise in Gen 15:5-6 the scripture was not fulfilled until Gen 22:9-19 on the altar Do you want to be shown, you foolish fellow, that faith apart from works is barren? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works, and the scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness”; and he was called the friend of God. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. (James 2:20-24) without obedience faith alone is useless Jesus told us not simply to believe but to believe and be baptised. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16) He told us to be born again Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3) Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. This question is predicated on a misapprehension of what ‘faith’ actually means - almost universally (even - in fact, especially - amongst God’s own), ‘faith’ (in the Hebrews 11 sense), is understood as nothing more than MERE BELIEF - some kind of autonomous noetic (for whatever reason - intellective, psychological, emotional, spiritual…) commitment to the things of God, when it is absolutely nothing of the sort! Faith (in the Hebrews 11 sense), is nothing less than IMPUTED BELIEF - a gift from God, lest we can claim it as something that is of us (a work) and so, boast of which will rob God of His glory (Eph 2:8,9, 2Pet 1:1, Phil 1:29, Act 3:16…) Once we understand that faith is entirely of God, then we come to appreciate that “It is God who justifies” - Rom 8:33

No-one will come to Christ without first the conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit Justification is a work of God the Father and the Holy Spirit in us and without us. Justification and faith do not have a sequence in time but in order Faith- Justification but are simultaneously in time. Sanctification is a work of The Holy Spirit in us but not without us. Justification and SANCTIFICATION cannot be separated. There is no sanctification without justification or justification without sanctification, this even when sanctification is just a begin of regeneration through all our life. Faith is by Grace and the free gift of God. The Bible teaches us the Justification of the UNGODLY. [Made/ declared Righteous. Based only on the righteousness of Christ] Not a regenerated believer is justified. The UNGODLY chooses SIN by nature. Sanctification is called Fruits of the Holy-Spirit. James 2: 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works [read FRUITS] is dead? Faith First then Fruits of Faith There is a general working of the Holy Spirit in the hearing of the Word that convicts and precedes faith but not always leads to salvation. See the parable of the sower. The plow is needed to make the soil good to receive the seed. Conviction is a work of the Holy Spirit and without no-one will come to Christ. Never lost is never saved. Jesus came to save the lost.

Since James was Jewish (like his brother Jesus), he is simply stating what is core to the Jewish faith which places a huge emphasis on "works" to conform to God's commandments and being a righteous person as an observant Jew during one's lifetime. Plus he is saying it is obedience to God's word (Torah) AND works. In Judaism, there is not as big a focus on being judged for Heaven or Hell as in Christianity as the most important aspect of faith. Judaism is about how you live according to God's commandments (Mishnas) in the present throughout one's life. The relationship is direct with God with no Jesus "in the middle" as it were. But there is not a huge focus on Judgement Day like Christianity with the Resurrection and faith in Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit (the Trinity having been created in the 4th century AD at the Council of Nicea) and Judgement Day when you die. James was a Jewish rabbi talking to Jews more than Gentiles, whom Paul was focused on. James was the one in charge of the early followers of Jesus in Jerusalem who were all Jewish. If you are familiar with the Tenach, the Mishna and the Talmud you will see this. James is simply saying "walk the talk" based on God's word which is a distinctly Jewish perspective.

I see that the conclusions of these Pastors are not consistent with the premises they laid... Example: Paul in Rom 3:28 explicitly refers to the Mosaic Law (Apart from the works of the Law particularly circumcision because this letter was addressed to the Gentile Christians) and not (to assume) from Genesis where Abraham was credited as Righteous when He believed. True Faith to say is true needs to bear Fruit and to bear fruit requires WORK or Good work w/o Good work Faith alone will not bear fruit (1 Cor 13:2b - if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.). To LOVE is Good Work... Faith Alone is not definitive for it can be True faith or Not true Faith but Faith and Good Work (LOVE) are definitive because Faith in this is definitely True Faith ... "Good Work" done in Faith manifests true Faith but "Good Work" done in Bad faith is in essence not a Good work or it was done not out of love for other but for selfish reason ...

A person is justified by GRACE alone, not faith. Faith is a fruit of the Spirit and this faith WILL be a living faith opposed to a dead faith that James mentions. The Spirit applies the faith of Christ to the elect sinner as a branch is connected to the Vine and life will flow from this union. The born from above sinner then produces good works for God is working in them both to will and do of His good pleasure. By the way Ligonier, there is no such thing as Progressive Santification - one is either Holy or Unholy. All in Christ are perfectly Holy and blameless before Him in love. The believer grows in knowledge of the Grace of God in his life after the new birth ; the old Adamic nature remains the same , totally corrupt until death.

Paul vs James is a false narrative. It assumes, incorrectly, that the Apostle Paul had been redeemed. from the Law when James wrote his epistle. Actually, the Crucifixion that would accomplish that redemption was still in the future. Both James and Paul talk abut faith but from two drastically different perspectives. James from his day to day experiences with Jesus before the Crucifixion, and Paul, decades later, from his supernaturally derived lessons from the Ressurected Savior.

the man talking about being justified once and once far all time right now doesnt make sense. If Jesus is our righteousness and we have been completely justified, then are you saying we do not have to become righteous ourselves and live however we please because Jesus is our righteousness and we cant also live a righteous life? Jesus showed us how to do it and tells us to follow him, obey him to sin no more, pick up our cross and deny the lusts and pleasures of the world and to become holy and clean. He warns the churches in Rev 2 (who are all believers) that it doesnt matter if they did good things in the beginning but since they were sliding back into sin they would be judged, thrown aside, spat out of his mouth..etc unless they repented and went back to the righteous way the started off in by obeying him. We are not "justified" or saved for all time the moment we accept Christ, that is the conversion event Paul speaks of at Eph 2:8-9. Yes we were saved from our past sins at that point, now what do we do from there? True salvation comes when we stand before the Lord and he decides if we were truly faithful or not (this puts fear of the Lord in me). As scripture says "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" If you have the attitude of "once saved always saved" you are walking a very dangerous path and prideful mentality

Justification by faith alone, is not taught anywhere in the 66 Books of the Holy Bible, and is a false teaching of some of the Reformed/Calvinst, based on their theology. Jesus Christ, Himself Almighty God, is very clear in Mark 1:15, that the sinners needs to REPENT and BELIEVE (FAITH) to be saved. Without repenting of ones sins, there can be no salvation, this is also clear from Acts 2:37-38, where Peter is asked by those who were "cut to the heart" (convicted by the Holy Spirit), "what shall we DO", to which Peter does not say, "DO nothing". but, "REPENT...for the forgiveness of sins". Provide a scriptural support of that tale. The contortions you guys are resorting to, as well as eisegesis, shoe horning the scriptures into your pet belief that all that is needed is faith. My goodness, James 2:19 says that the demons believe and shudder, they have faith in God that he will do all he sets out to do, in fact most likely more faith than any imperfect human. They have been in God's presence and witnessed the material world being created, are they saved too? With this faith and works discussion, I feel like I'm in crazy town with you guys and your ilk. What if we do not do any good work? So, does James only say that our work is only the fruit of our justification by faith? Shouldn't we have to have faith first before we are justified? And you say, faith is also the gift of God. Oh, no, we do not have to do anything. If God planted us, we will just grow and bear fruit. But we are not plants, our fruits just don't appear during spring and harvested in the summer. James is not saying that our work is just the fruit of our faith. "See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone." (James 2:24) "Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?" (James 2:21). Abraham did some work of obedience before he was justified as righteous. So are we, we need to believe and obey, obey the commandments before we become justified as righteous. "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).

Study the doctrine of justification by faith before use biblical text out of context as proof text for your pretext. because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin. - Romans 3:20, 4:2-4, 6:14-15, 11:6; 2 Corinthians 3:7-14; Galatians 3:17, 24, 4:2-3 [Jeremiah 31:33; Hebrews 10:16] God is the Giver of Saving Faith. @@HearGodsWord faith alone was not part of the Church Fathers’ theology. You can find some things out of context that sound like faith alone but then read the same writing in a different spot that will contradict it. Clement is a good example of this. Furthermore, the Fathers held to the sacrifice of the mass, the real physical presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and baptismal regeneration. They held monasticism in high esteem (Athanasius on St Anthony of the desert for example) as well. Where do we see them hold to TULIP? Or double predestination? Or the abolishment of free will? Maybe someone could find some little snippet here or there and I haven’t read all the Fathers but I have yet to read any of them that sound Reformed for longer than a sentence or two.

Oh dear... "By the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified" But works are an intrinsic part of justification: the works of the Spirit, of faith within the walk / journey of faith. If no libertarian self determining will exists, then the Calvinists are right and we cannot apostasise once regenerated by God's effectual deterministic (arm twisting) grace. If we do possess free will... then synergy is a reality and we can apostasise and therfore we are to work out what He works in (cooperate) until the end. I'd rather follow the exegesis of the first 1500 years of church history than that of a Protestant invention which involves constant and great Scriptural gymnastics to make all the warning passages mean something that they never did. @@HearGodsWord Peace to you who read X (I may be stating the obvious, but there is a distinction, and indeed a difference between the ancient and reformed views) Of course, all born of the Spirit Christians believe that we are justified by faith (the faithfulness of Christ), His all sufficient everything is not in question. But when comparing the fathers and the reformers and their core doctrines... Do we find... Man existing with a weakened will and dead to God (relationally)... Yes ! Agreed. Substititionary atonement - Yes ! Foreknown and predestined - Yes ! But... Totally depraved and either determined to heaven or hell... No ! (with the exception of Augustine and some of the reformers) Penal substitutionary atonement (as in the cross primarily being about the satisfaction of God's wounded honour and the exhaustion of His wrath)... No !... satisfaction bit (as the reformers interpret it) - not till Anselm of Canterbury in the 11th century... and the wrath bit - not until the 16th. In reading about the earliest views of the Atonement and how they might relate with the Reformed understanding, it's so important to read the fathers in context and by authors who belong to whatever ancient tradition that the fathers were themselves a part of (oriental, western or eastern Orthodox for example). For whatever "additions" these Communions may have accrued over the years, they still maintain and rejoice in firm Theological, Christological and Soteriological convictions of the first few centuries of their existence. Though there are a couple of quotes within the early father's about the satisfaction of God 's justice, it is always within the emphasis and balance found within the Patristic mindset regarding the atonement that existed for the first 1000 years of church history... which goes something along these lines... (this is not aimed at you, just anyone who might be reading this) The atoning work of the Son pleased and satisfied the Father, for "For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself", and He was wounded that the ancient wound of sin and its alienating effects might be healed as He reversed every cursed consequence of our disobedience... Within Himself (The God-Man - The Offering - The High Priest - The Mediator between God and man) ... by becoming a curse. He was stripped and shamed that we might be reclothed in immortality and our true dignity... for the chastisement that brought us peace was upon Him (Isaiah 53) - He took it all upon and into Himself... for us... He died our death in order to do what we could never do... Reconcile us to Himself... "For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame", for it is we who, like wayward sheep, had gone astray and walked away and hidden from His Presence; and it is God Who we ultimately hurt with every sin we commit... for He Is Love; and this Love, the Good Shepherd, has descended to find us - as one of us - to seek and to save us. He Who "remembereth that we are dust", has, in pity for us, identified fully with us. As Gregory Nazianzus said in the 4th century, "that which is not assumed, is not healed"... And glory to God ! He has assumed the entirity of our nature by His Incarnation. In love He suffered and took our fall, for else we would inevitably have to die and suffer alianation from Him if someone (the Son of God and Son of Man) had not "in our stead". He showed forth His righteous judgement of sin and reconciled and cleansed our nature by His Incarnation and death: With His arms outstretched, we put Him to death ! And He therefore defeated the enemy (who had no hold on Him) for Christ suffers an unjust comdemnation, that we also, in Him, might not be justly condemned. Through the Eternal Spirit He absorbed and experienced the collective consequences and effects of our transgression and the energies of iniquity, detroying death by His very own ! He "tasted death" - emptying it of its power ! absorbing it all into His Divine Person and disarming and dispelling all the powers of darkness by the Light of His Divinity ! What looked like the ultimate defeat, was in fact the victory of good over evil and the recreation of the entire cosmos. He did this all by is own choice, relationally, and in love. Without compromising His uncreated (Holy) Nature (as God) or the free and loving response of created nature (as man), or violating the laws of cause and effect within the spiritual and physical universe which He had formed and set in motion, the "Logos made man" laid down His Life... And took it back up again ! The Father "laid upon Him the iniquity of us all"... yet according to the predetermined foreknowledge and plan of God, it was us and the demonic powers that smote and afflicted Him... "It was our sin that held Him there" The Father was not pitted against the Son; for the Trinity is One in will and in love. And neither should we say that it was just "the human nature within Him" that God was somehow punishing, for that would amount to Nestorianism in its denial of the true orthodox understanding of the union within the One Person of the God - Man. God freely forgives... For He is Merciful. Through Christ's ministry, all Righteousness was fullfilled "finished". He came to recue us, not from God (though the judgment surely awaits those who will be found not in Christ), but from the enemy and from ourselves (the dominion and captivity of sin). He is our cleansing. His sacrifice is both propitious and expiative; it is, as Ephesians 5:2 says, "holy and pleasing to God"... but the emphasis is on the change effected within man, for whom God became man. For He is the Lamb Who takes away the sin of the world; Who is the ransom to the way things are on every level of being and existence, and Who redeemed us by His Blood (His eternal life). He united humanity and divinity within Himself and so made the Way for us - through Himself, the "Ark" which is His Body through which we were reconciled; and it is now - in Him and His Body - the Church - where we find sanctuary and shelter from the wrath that is to come... For in union with Him there is no condemnation. Jesus upheld all the requirements of Righteousness and became the perfect "offering", "sacrifice".... "the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God" He, as the creed says, "suffered and was buried"... And on the third day was raised up ! and we with Him ! and In Him ! Glory to our God the Triune King of Eternity ! Praise His Holy Name !!!

"Does James 2:24 refute the doctrine of justification by faith alone?" Indeed it DOES! No differently; than Jesus refuting Deuteronomy 24:1 when He said in...Mathew 19:3-8. And refuting Mathew 1:1 when Jesus said in...John 8:58 and Mathew 22:45. He also, refuted Hebrews 6:4-6 and 10:26 when He said in..Mark 3:28-29. There are many others too. IE: James simply was inspired by satan; to write what he did. But Jesus inspired Paul to get it right when he said...Ephesians 2:8-9 and Romans 3:28. However Paul was led by satan when he wrote 2 Timothy 3:16 was a lie; yet Jesus inspired him to write 1 Timothy 3:16 which was the truth. Oh indeed. This means ALL bibles have enumerable errors. Oh indeed. For bible scholars have known this for centuries; but foolish Christians (especially preachers) can't stand the notion that a bible is not "innerant or infallible". So satan inspires them to lie and "worship" a book; by forcing them to turn lies into "truths". How sad. THIS is why we have so many different doctrines, dogmas and churches (all over the world); debating, arguing and fighting with each others. Sad indeed. Thus... ...I believe that Jesus does NOT want us to ever make a book; the "Ultimate Gospel". Rather come to HIM; so He can guide, lead and direct us AROUND the satan-led lies; and latch onto the "Golden" truths. For "THAT" is true Wisdom from Jesus. Praise His Holy Name. Proof... John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was within God, and the Word was God. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. This means: Calling any book "The word of God" is Blasphemy; For Jesus IS the only "Word" of God ever. Praise His Holy name... ...In any case Brethren, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. @alfiegalpinmusic
@alfiegalpinmusic 2 года назад
James was not inspired by Satan, it’s surely great blasphemy to say what was inspired by the Holy Spirit is common. James was the brother of Jesus, all scripture is infallible. Just because Jesus is the word incarnate does not mean the Bible is not the word of God, indeed the 10 commandments written on tablets of stone were the words of God, they came from Gods mouth and were written by His finger. Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, dwelling among us. If the scriptures are not the word of God, then why did Jesus uphold the Holy Scripture as the final authority when He used it to refute Satan in the wilderness? the Scripture given by God was the infallible word by which Christ lived perfectly, as He is the word made flesh. God incarnate. You can’t in one breath say Paul is guided by the spirit in one area of instruction, yet say Satan has guided him in another. Did not Christ appoint him as an apostle? Why would Christ appoint an apostle to speak falsehood and not repent? It’s cherry picking at best to say that Paul was misguided but also uphold his other teachings, I don’t think there is any evidence anywhere in church history that suggests he was guided falsely.
