Lyricism will always matter. No matter how popular “mumble” rap seems to be, the top dogs or the artist we as a culture collectively celebrates are lyricist... with the exception of Future & Travis Scott.
Nah yo. Like only the THREE rappers can really rap. The rest of the biggest dont give a fuck about lyricism and the number of rappers that do care gets lower and lower as time passes. No way "lyricism will always matter" damn near every new rapper cant rap and they get big
First you say that lyricism will always matter. Then you say mumble rap is the most popular genre of rap, then you say that the lyricists will always be on top (which really isn’t true right now). And then you say that future and Travis Scott are also some of your favorite artists. You statements are everywhere
Wunder Bread I think he's acknowledging that non-lyrical rap is big right now (and usually is) but lyrical rap will always have a place. And by "on top" I think he means in in terms of popularity, but in terms of respect. But idk, I think hip hop is entering a new era that incorporates other genres like rock and electronic. Both of those genres are not very lyrical.
97% of rappers seem to think lyricism doesn't matter. But if a rapper wants to be respected LYRICALLY it should matter.Lyricsm simply means QUALITY BARS!!

Lyricism is one of the foundations of rap. Respect it regardless of the era. But hip hop was also party shit too back in the day. For me, today's mainstream music isn't for me. People should always wanna progress mentally and spiritually. Do y'all thing, as far as people today. No hate. Just don't forget the bases of this shit. Have a good day y'all. 🙏
My Top 5: Biggie Nas G Rap Pun Rakim It's all what personally connects to you. Ain't no rights or wrongs & ain't no absolute 1 Greatest MC/Rapper. No single MC does everything better than every other MC
I like P's humbleness about Dave East reaching out even though P isn't on the radar of most. I feel like if I ever made it big as an artist I would want to collab with every artist who ever meant something to me even if they weren't big. One of my favorites of all time, Chino XL, never made it huge but I would love to get killed on my own track from a fire Chino verse.
This album is 🔥. Music needs every sound as well as rap. We need super lyrical artist like Immortal technique and DMX and KRS One and loaded Lux and Jay-z and Nas and wu-tang and OutKast. We also need artist to represent the night clubs and drugs and mental health and money. The music is an outlet.
It's exciting when one of your favorite artist of the past does a project with one of your current favorite rappers. Both underrated AF! This is perfect. They are the Epitomy of Hip-Hop culture.
Lyricism determines a good rapper. But that doesn’t matter anymore since the audience has changed now. People wanna listen to the sound rather than the lyrics. I can respect it.
I grew up listening to 90s hip hop being a 80s baby. Lyrics and beats are a beautiful thing when the artist loves their craft. Not disrespecting today’s generation but it’s more like a get your money and enjoy the fruits of your labor type of vibe how I see it in regards of the music not being deep and too lyrical. Look at The Migos, mumble rappers or Tekashi 69 they want to turn up and have fun. Nothing wrong with that...this is their time. Just don’t say as you guys get older..that y’all was very lyrical. #turnup
Styles P is so dead on point about Nas. Represent and Illmatic as a whole change what Rappers had to be, it's why the Album is so celebrated, even down to the language choices, the imagery, subject matter selection. You can tell Nas was a hip-hop head.
We’re all products of our time, everyone’s top 5 represents the time they live in, no is right or wrong. I love hear everyone’s top 5 because we can see the time they were in Mine is In no order top 6 Eminem Wayne Drake Cole Kendrick Honorable mentions: Eminem & Biggie
mush Respek to Style's p Dave East that's Respek the Culture with real bar's lyricist in rap game OGs legend Style's p is one best lyricist in rap game that's way Style's p is my Favorite rapper all time
Lyricism always matter to Hip Hop . Lyricism however, never mattered to the rap industry . Learn the difference, people . The business only caters to what can be mass produced and sold . The culture ( the real culture, not this slang that all this mainstream platforms like to use ) is all about preserving and elevation the craft, entertaining hip hop heads FIRST, not the masses . The fact is ART always gets watered down when the Business grows . Rap is now the biggest genre of music, right at the time when the Rapper has the least expectation to be talented .
Lyrics don’t matter. Whatever sounds good to your ears is what matters. If you like lyrics, then lyrics matter. If you like sound, then sound matters. Simple as that 🤷🏾♂️
The answer is yes, just not in Mainstream hip hop which to me is conpletely fine. If i wanna listen to Skyzoo and Kendrick or Pusha T. Ill go do that and if i wanna listen to some shit to just to bump to and sing along to ill listen to some drake or travis scott
mumble rappers are just this era vanilla ice and when youre talking about the culture whos a real legend? someone like vanilla ice or styles p himself? so yeah skill and lyricism will always matter
Nas, lupe fiasco, tech n9ne, Aesop rock, Mf doom, black thought. That’s my top 5 (not a Goat list) cause I grew up with hip hop in the 00’s. these are also the best lyricists
Hip Hop to me has always been about contribution . How are you , as an artist , contributing to the culture in your generation ? A lot of today's " artist " are not . And I find it interesting that their being given a pass from those before them , that worked so hard to establish it and make it what it is today . What's the point of knowing the history of the music if you disrespect the history of the music by consciously deciding to put out garbage just to make a buck ? There's no longer a balance . Real lyricist seem to be few and far between , where as the majority ain't worth a nickel and they making all the money . And the elder is now confirming that's alright . But isn't that how the art dies ? What if in 20 years there's only 3-4 real lyricist and everything else is mumble rap ? And so until that's all their is ....
Nicole Williams The art will never die. I love lyricism beyond anything else but I also like all the other lanes. As long as any artist keeps creating party music, melody, dumb shit, and etc the art cannot die. It’s a creation by the creator to express themselves and perform their take on this art. Still, some people are just garbage I’ll give you that lmfao.
They were saying the very same thing in 1998 when Puff and Mase ran the mainstream with Styles being an active participant. After all, he was signed to Puff. If it wasn't for The LOX's demand to be let go, they would have got written off as some shiny suit/jiggy clowns. It seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
@Nicole Williams Hip hop today is oppressive to the fans in my opinion. The powers that be have strategically developed mainstream music to brainwash the listener. I believe the rich powerful executives pimp out the artists. That’s why the more fame & fortune an artist obtains the more unhappy they become with themselves. Sadly enough I’m sure they didn’t realize the price that comes with success which is sacrificing their self worth whether they knew that they were being coerced or not. Do you ever notice the more success an artist obtains the more ignorant their music becomes. A artist who is woke is a threat so they aren’t welcomed to the industry. Anyone who has the capability to expose all the truths and keep us broke, addicted, dependent, & ignorant will not make it today. The music in my era was food for the soul glorifying unity with true meaning to the lyrics. The lyrics depicted the truth while uplifting & inspiring the listener to not just take it from the artist but seek knowledge for self. Media wants you to believe their truths and not question nor think for yourself. This is what lyricism is about its purpose is to seek knowledge not turn up & destroy yourself. SMH
What they are neglecting to tell is that the media controls the content that gets put out. Their is not a premium on artist who educate the Black youth. If you go back to the 80s a lot of old school rappers seen this coming. Do your own research I am old enough to have witness it. Main did not like the fact that young Black youth were gaining knowledge and growing financially as well as successfully.
Lyricist is not going anywhere ever. this discussion for entertainment value is all right but should be a mute issue. there’s no controversy spitters With metaphors, content storytelling Is not going anywhere... this is like having a LeBron and Jordan discussion, waste of language🧐
Lyricism will always matter but you don't need it to be successful or a star. Travis, Future, Thugga have all spit lyrical shit before but they're known for the best production, flow and the way they use their voice to become part of the beat.
This common damn sense... as long you know your history and respect hip hop idgaf... but at the same time they dumbing shit down... but i get it on both ends
