My mom was on Metformin, had heart problems and other health issues but she still lived to be 87. Considering all her issues I think it was a long time. She didn’t think she’d live to be 60! Docs, I love your videos, keep them coming!

My grandma recently passed away at 87 as well. Been diabetic and on metformin for, Id say most of her life. Other relatives who were also diabetic didn’t love as long though , they were quite stubborn in taking medication consistently. I think consistency with the medication is the key as well.

Wow! That amazing . Most ppl don’t live that long with less issues . Imy dr just stared me on metformin for weightloss and also has said , It helps with longevity, altho I’m 47 it can’t hurt . I’ll take it ! Lol

There are big drawbacks to longer lifespan without healthspan. My stepmother was careful to eat well and went for a walk every day. As a result, when she got Alzheimer's, she was in good physical health and lived for 15 more years, confused, fearful, unhappy. I'm in my seventies and I fear dementia more than death. I'd rather die suddenly from a heart attack or stroke than spend years demented or physically helpless. Not that we get to choose...

Absolutely agree, same happened to my Mother who was always very physically fit. She started getting confused in her 60s but lived until nearly 91 after 30 years of needing round the clock supervision. She was fearful, tearful and distressed most of that time living with almost constant hallucinations. All her physical exams came back perfect, her heart was always sound as a drum.

I had the same experience with my mom. She gardened, solved puzzles, exercised, etc. When her Alzheimer's got worse she was completely ambulatory. I spent a lot of time chasing her and hunting for her. It just got worse and worse. Like your mom, she was confused and frightened. She had hallucinations. On the rare times when she was cognizant, she would beg me to kill her. Like you, Alzheimer's scares me more than fire. Don't keep me alive to live like that.

My surgurrent took me off Metformin in the hospital because he said I didn't have diabetes. I"m now 85+ and still am off Metformin. I'm going to roll the dice and hope I die quick and easy when it's time

I've been on metformin for diabetes over 20 years ! I recently told my doc I want to try to go off the meds and instead severely change my diet - she told me about the health and aging benefits beyond diabetes ,as u just posted, so I decided to stay on metformin PLUS change my diet ! I have taken Metformin for 30 years. Dosr 850 mg once per day. AiC stays below 6.9, diet has not been a concern. I'm 87 years old, active, sight and no sign of ability to function and thinking ability is far better than most my are. Is the reason Metformin, that is unknown. and no plan to stop taking Metformin.

Keep taking the metformin. I have been taking 2X1000mgs daily for over 30 years for type 2 diabetes. It works great and I have no side effects, except I just turned 79 years old. If that's a side effect I can handle it....😊

I think I would rather have a pill that would make me hurt less! But honestly, I don't like pills. I am 72 on only tale Vit. B12 an D3. I feel if you use food as medicine, you can reduce or eliminate most medications. But to each his own. What ever floats your boat.

Sounds like you’re lucky, but some people aren’t so lucky. It’s unfair to categorize them as “wanting to take pills”, when they in fact need them to survive. High blood pressure medication keeps people from having a heart attack or stroke (brain attack). Some people have chemical imbalances that require meds to help with depression or anxiety to help them live happier or with less fear. I have pre-cancerous cells in my esophagus, and my doctor prescribed meds to keep them from mutating further into cancer. They also calm the acid in my stomach that causes me terrible pain and damages the esophagus. If I want to live a less painful life and protect myself from getting cancer, I have to take those pills. I already lost my dad and my grandmother to intestinal cancers, I would prefer not to be a third-generation victim who dies of cancer. So, don’t think you’re somehow better than those of us who have genetic factors that make us more susceptible to cancer. Just be grateful you have your health, and be gracious instead of judgmental about it.

@@cherylmcnutt9905 Yes you are right. There are a lot of diseases that you may need medication, however there are also a lot of diseases that a change in diet could correct them. I am just saying that I choose the latter. I don't know why you think I`m lucky, because I have been diagnosed with multiple diseases including severe GERD. It felt like I was having a heart attack. When I went to a whole food plant based diet without any oil, the pain stopped and has never returned. I have also reversed my heart disease. I am just saying I choose food over pills. Some diseases can be controlled by diet. I only wish I knew this when I was younger.

I used to take Metformin for Type 2 diabetes bit I voluntarily stopped taking it. Tired and listless all the time,couldn't retain any new knowledge without a fight and ageing prematurely were my reasons for withdrawing from this med.Ten years later I'm feeling stronger than when I was on that drug my only pill a multivitamin / multi-mineral and trying to eat right

I've been on slow-release Metformin for two years and feel zero side effects. Very effective at reducing my blood sugar. I started on the standard Metformin but it gave me severe stomach pains, so I then went on the slow-release version and had no problems since - it's a great drug.

Hey if you have a good body weight and eat properly you can consider getting off the med like I did. and for me I couldnt take the regular Met either, I tried Glumetza and it didnt work for me, so I got to work instead.

Oh great, I was just taken off of Metformin! I was prescribed Metformin a few years ago when my doctor said I was borderline diabetic. For the past year my A1c has been good as well as all my labs. I saw my doctor in April and I was complaining about nausea. She looked at my records and said I had been complaining about nausea for a year. She reviewed all my meds and Metformin was the only thing I was taking that could cause nausea. She took me off the Metformin and I haven't had one bit of nausea since. Did I miss my chance for the fountain of youth? I don't want to live longer if I'm always nauseated. 😘 Thanks for this very interesting information!

This comment is exactly the reason that I no longer take Metformin. As a T2 diabetic, I was done with feeling half-sick all the time. I decided I'd rather live a shorter life feeling good than a long life feeling half-sick all the time! So, I fired my endocrinologist (he didn't agree with my decision to quit) and went on a mission to find an M.D. who would follow my diabetes with no meds. Found one and six years later, I am still a "lifestyle-controlled" T2, with normal range lab panels. It can be done!

@@gayshook2793 You're right Gay, it can be done! It's a shame your first doctor wouldn't try to help you manage this medicine free. I was so glad my doctor had no problem taking me off Metformin without replacing it with another drug. It's been about 4 months now and I'm still nausea free! And I'm back to seeing this doctor every 6 months instead of 3. Talking with Docs have been doing their best to teach us things that we need to be aware of for our own health. If more doctors took this initiative, then people wouldn't be so oblivious to what's really good for them. Doctors need to communicate with their patients and it needs to be a two-way conversation! And it's great when you find a doctor who works with you without just automatically issuing prescriptions. Plus it's a great feeling when you can start eliminating prescriptions! It's great that you made this decision Gay and you have a doctor who is working with you! You stood up for yourself and took charge of your life and health!

@@triciabyrne7761 Yes I do, she works with me on everything! She's very intuitive about my prescriptions, even those prescribed by other other doctors! She has no problem taking me off medication that seems to cause a side affect. If anything ever arises that's beyond her expertise, she will send me to a specialist who can control the situation. Living in a small town, you don't always have a lot of choices. My doctor joined her father's practice and she treats almost everyone in my family. Small town doctors seem to be more personable and you can feel the difference! You don't feel like a number, they actually know your name!

I was put on Metformin for "pre diabetes". I forget the milligrams but my blood sugar was 128, which is high for me but nothing to panic over. Diabetes runs in my family so I'm kind of expecting it but this wasn't it. I was in my early 50s. It made me die of thirst to the point I drank so much water I threw it up, Had hot and cold sweats and felt disorientation. I took it for almost a week until I threw it out and never called that doctor again. I will definetly need to see substantial results before I even try it again. I am now in my early 60s so it will probably be too late for me but I will try to follow these developements. Thanks for bringing this up because I had heard something about it but it sounds more "official" coming from you guys. Thanks again.

I lost all side affects after 2 weeks. Been on metformin 6 years, lost about 75 lbs. My waist was 44 at worst 😂, now i am at high school waist at 32. My doc prescribed me cuz family history and i has 130 blood sugar like u.

Shows some data for your case please! Stopped taking metformin and at the same time Stopped eating sugar or food with added sugar. Stopped or reduced my carbohydrate and reduced eating snack between meal. Lost 10 lbs in a month. My sugar any from 90 to 150. I went on intermittent or skipping two to one meal a day. Eat healthy and Stopped eating processed food. You healthy and young forever.

Thanks docs. I was taking Metformin for several years, then I went in for a hysterectomy and the surgeon stopped them, she said they had damaged my liver! Now I just take Gliclazide! However, you probably won’t believe this, but the Bible promises EVERLASTING LIFE on a paradise earth, forever ….. no sickness, no tablets, and, sorry, NO DOCTORS necessary! Won,t be long now! In most cases I feel life style ( not drinking, smoking, etc.) determines our longevity. So try to eat Whole Foods lots of good water lower your stress if you can will play a good part in living longer. You brought up a great point tho if your living where bombs are being dropped on your Country then that’s another immediate matter. Your both very smart Doctors so I must mention genetics can also play a role. I believe the Japanese people live the longest but like you both mentioned is it going to be a quality life in your senior years? You both are rock stars in my book….

Thank you for the video! 7:25 Here's an idea: Instead of metformin, eat in such a way as to avoid high post-meal glucose spikes. You can determine this for yourself using a glucometer. Just measure glucose 45-60 minutes after your meal. That value you read will be somewhere near the peak of the blood sugar spike. Try to keep that number under 140 -at all times- after every meal. Aiming for 120 is probably even better. Once you learn your response to various foods you can put the glucometer in the drawer and forget about it. BONUS: If you go for a 30 minute walk immediately after your meal you will also blunt the spike. This is handy if you happen to over indulge in sugar/refined carbs. You can also prove this for yourself using the meter. Eat the same meal at the same time on two consecutive days. On day one remain sedentary after the meal, then measure glucose at 60 mins. On day two go for 30 minute walk after the meal, then measure glucose at 60 mins. Compare the results from day 1 and day 2. PS: If you want to be more rigorous measure your glucose immediately before the meal too. This way you can compute the rise in glucose from the meal rather than just the absolute value after the meal. There's another YT channel called "Beat Diabetes" that's devoted to this meter-based approach. The channel is for diabetics and prediabetics but the same applies for people with healthy blood sugar seeking to optimize health by avoiding glucose spikes.

Thank you for your presentation. I'm a 73 year old male with a relatively manageable version of Diabetes 2 (that is what my wife who is a Nephrologist tells me). I'm just a goofy professor with little knowledge of medicine. After using Metformin for 6 years, I can report the following: 1) Prior to taking Metformin, I used to get several serious cold symptoms each year, which often required taking Anti-biotics. But since taking Metformin, I have not had any cold in the last six years! 2) From my non-scientific experience, it is directly related to Metformin. I have reasoned that since Metformin lowers blood sugar level, and since viruses may use sugar to multiply, there must be a connection. But I'm still confused how that may work. If Metformin takes the sugar out of blood stream and pushes it into the cells, then it may be suggested that the viruses take the sugar from the blood stream, and not from the cells. Please let knew what you think. 3) I also experienced less issues with dental care, without much change in diet or dental hygiene. I wonder if that has something to do with Metformin removing sugar from the blood stream. Finally, I never experienced the common side-effect of Metformin, which by most accounts is frequent diarrhea.

Metformin really is remarkable in all of its potential uses. We use it in the reproductive endocrinology side of things for PCOS and infertility. But I am 79 and healthy.... I am also 5 years older than the second longest lived person in my immediate family. About 20 years ago I gained a lot of weight and became pre-diabetic. Dr. prescribed Metformin. After a while I lost some weight and was no longer pre diabetic. Asked the Dr. If I needed to stop the Metformin, he said keep taking it it’s good for other things too. Been taking it ever since. Modern medicine.

Hi cwa. So no one is doing it as they are not allowed. Abba the rationale for statins was to reduce heart attack and stroke so it was a bit different but yes the ethics of taking something to potentially live longer is concerning. My doc put me on metformin when I was 62 but chose not to take it due to bad things said about it. I am 67 now and decided to take now only wish I had kept on it. I'm saying so having just gotten back to it 3 weeks ago so it has not given me the benefit yet but am confident of it. Thank you!

7 years ago, while on Metformin, I had an unfortunate reaction after outpatient carpal tunnel surgery. I was fine immediately after the surgery, but about 6 hours later my heart began pounding like crazy. I went to the ER and my blood sugar was 532. They put me on a fast dripping IV and gradually my heart calmed down and I began to feel normal. However the diagnosis was lactic acidosis which required a mandatory hospital stay. I felt fine the next day, although my blood sugar was still not back to normal. My primary care physician blamed the combination of Metformin and general anesthetic ( which was only given for 10 minutes) and switched me to a different med for diabetes.

We were at church this morning and my husband talked with one of our ladies that was in the hospital and rehab for 2 months and almost died. She is in a wheelchair and can't walk. She is diabetic. Her doc told her that she had metformin poisoning (there is a name for that but he couldn't remember it). It began to shut down her organs until she got treatment. We have watched your videos for a while and remember seeing one about metformin but hadn't watched it because it wasn't something we have to deal with, so we came home and watched it for the information. I don't want to scare people because it probably works well for a lot of people.

The ethicacy of an anti-aging pill should not even be an issue. Most everyone wants to live longer as long as they are still functional. Isn't that the basis of medical field? Those that do not want to live longer are free to not take the pill. It is a win-win for everybody. Especially if it is something already well known like Metformin which does not take a huge investment in time and research to study and approve.

I am a type 2 diabetic. I took metformin xr every day. It made me sick; caused severe diarrhea. I stopped using it finally had a crash and ended up on Humalog and Lantis. I am weening myself off of these with diet. I am now taking berberine and tumeric with other supplements. My blood sugar is now under control. Metformin is still a synthetic and still can cause serious side effects. Berberine and tumeric are natural and safe and I have no side effects.

Metformin is clearly not a magic pill, but if it helps why not? Obviously follow other lifestyle options and don't rely on it alone. I'm on it for Type 2 diabetes, although I have a friend whose been on it for the last few years for anti-aging. Thanks for the video. I have T2 diabetes and first med I was on was Metformin. I took it for a few years without issue then began having constant nausea so severe I was walking around drinking Emitrol because I couldn’t even keep water on my stomach without it. Because it took awhile to get in to see my Endo and I was freaking miserable, I took myself OFF the med. Doc switched me to Kombiglyze which I believe has a lower dose Metformin along with something else and I’ve done pretty well, although I have tons of other gastric issues (IBD, multiple food intolerances, EoE, etc.). I’m 65 and all my family is dead and I have no kids or nieces/nephews, so whenever God wants to take me, I’m fine with it.

A lot of health information out there for every one! I am a 79 year old diabetic, who has shaky hands, Bilateral Knees and Rt shoulder replacements, and a plate in my neck. Yesterday, I had an MRI done and there is no problem noted except small blood vessels. Everyone says that they are jealous of my health...but I do see declines in abilities and no longer agile. Alive? Yes, Healthy? I do take Metformin....but don't know if it is helping me or not. Won't stop it to see. LOL

Interesting issues to consider. With folks getting to choose if they use something like that and it is widely available and cheap, why not have it as a choice. At least it isn't like the medication used for Covid that only the most powerful and rich could get by Regeneron. It seems that as a species we like the idea of health in a pill much more than working heard at it every day. For me personally, the quality-of-life issue is a much bigger thing than quantity. If a person can get both though, I don't see it as a bad thing.

Hi Docs, love your channel. So, my doctor told me I am pre diabetic and wants to put me on metformin. I asked her what can I do to prevent being on metformin? She said I need to make some drastic changes with my diet, especially cutting out all sugars. She agreed to giving me six months to lower the numbers, if they are not better I need to be on metformin. My six months is up mid August. It’s much more difficult than I thought, especially with so many “hidden” sugars. To be honest I’m afraid of some side effects of metformin but if it prevents me from being diabetic I guess it’s worth it.

I had the exact same experience about a year ago. I dropped my A1c to 7.0 with dietary changes and I'm headed lower by reducing carbs and I eat two meals a day to get overnight ketosis.

I'm 69 yrs old and I am enjoying my life, I would not want to live Forever !!!! I've been taking Metformin for Years, since I was forty yrs old. My Father died at 58 yrs from his third heart attack !!! He drank and Smoked against his Doctor's Advice !!!! I don't drink alchohol or smoke, and I've never had a heart attack !!!! Metformin can damage your liver and kidneys. The best way to live longer is to eat a starvation diet. But who wants to do that ? My Mother and Sister both sunbathed all the time in the Summer. They both died of Cancer years ago !!! I always sit in the Shade and I have never had Cancer !!!! I also eat pulses, vegetables, curry, Chinese home made Food and a Small amount of Meat !!!! I cook everything from Scratch, and never have Ready Meals !!!! So I seem to be doing OK !!!!! I never thought I would live a long time because my parents died young, but that was because of Smoking, Drinking Alchohol, Eating Burnt Meat, Taking Diazepam as well as lots of Alchohol, and laying in the Sun all day. I have always been careful not to stay outside in direct Sunlight for too long! There are Cosmic Rays, Gamma Ray Bursts, and Supernova Explosions going off all the time and our Magnetic Field around the Earth does not stop Everything !!!! You cannot see a Gamma Ray burst, but the Heavy Radioactive Particles could Damage your DNA !!!!

I am so heartened by the fact that folks are investigating older drugs that have been proven safe over the long term for other uses. That said I've been taking Metformin for decades but I can only take so much in a day (doc keeps trying to raise my dosage) as anything more causes major bathroom issues. The other things to watch out for is that it can lower your blood sugars so DO NOT TAKE without doctor supervision and guidance.

One critical element of using Metformin is it’s affect on B vitamin levels and a number of physicians recommend that if you take a B Complex to counter Metformin’s effect on that vitamin make sure it is Metlyated.

I was prescribed Metformin 35 years ago when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have taken it continuously since that time mostly at 2X1000 mg daily. I am now 79, which is 5 years older than my oldest immediately family member lived to be. I have no idea if the metformin is responsible for that, but at least it hasn't killed me which is what most internet articles about metformin discuss. Of course I intend to keep taking it.....never had any of the negative side effects. if it makes me live longer, that is a side effect I can....live with.......

After years of taking Metformin, I recently (3 1/2 months ago) had knee replacement surgery on my left leg. The internist at the hospital took me off the Metformin because they said I was NOT diabetic, something I have been saying to my doctors for years. So, how in the heck did I suddenly become to not need to take it? I find bringing up subjects like this makes doctors annoyed and they blab on about how they are doctors and know what they are doing, and I know nothing. I fell 5 years ago and needed an emergency operation (total hip replacement on the same side as the knee). (I am 74 and have been taking Metformin at least 8 - 10 years.) They also took me off of Meloxicam (NSIAD) and I recently begged to be put back on it again because my feet and hands and knees are painful, inflamed, deformed and useless because of Osteoarthritis which I have suffered from since my 30s. I have been told I need the other knee and both feet operated on now (nothing can be done about my hands). How do I trust any doctor now? Any advice you can offer? I do enjoy your very informative talks and have been watching since I discovered your channel. Thank you so much.

I am taking Metformin and also needed a knee replacement. My surgeon took me off Metformin 4 days before surgery because it has bad interactions with general anesthesia. After surgery, I went back on Metformin with no problems.

@@TalkingWithDocs I had issues with a few doctors similar to yours. I keep changing doctors every so often. I live in a small town and had so many problems finding the right doctor for me. Finally I started to talk to people in my area to find out if they are happy with their doctor and what they actually like about them. Word of mouth is really the best way to find a different doctor. Just be sure to ask why they like their doctor -also listen without interrupting. You can ask questions after. I hope this helps. I know it's terrible to have a doctor you are not satisfied with especially when you have health issues going on that are not being treated. No one should have to suffer like that. Also have you tried an internal medicine doctor who sees geriatric (older) patients? They might be more understanding about the pain you are suffering from due to your progressive arthritis. I hope some of my thoughts are helpful.

You ARE in charge of your own health! Take it seriously. Do not necessarily believe what a GP tells you! Get second and third opinions, if necessary. You know your body better than anyone else. If you have a gut feeling that something is amiss, that might indeed be so. Unless, of course, you’re totally neurotic!

How about just avoiding high glycemic foods? Seems limiting spiking blood glucose level is the real problem?

250 mg Metformin daily. I can confirm that my aging is progressing quite normally! Wrinkles everywhere! 🤣🤣

I have type 2 diabetes and porphyria. It is a difficult road. BUT, I refuse to use metformin, because of the side effects. Nope! Trying to eat right. Hard though. Diabetes.. hardly any sugars and carbs. Porphyria... must eat carbs and sugars. Would love some help. Doctors in the US have not been able, to help. 71.5 years old, and still above ground! The older I get, the more I have to rely on, the kindness, of strangers!

Hi, maybe you should try the metformin again. I'm a 79 year old type 2 diabetic who is taking metformin, 2X1000 mgs daily and I have been for about 30 years...with zero problems from the metformin...

Took it for a year when my sugar level got too high. I lost weight and after a year asked my doc to take me off of it. The downside was the side effect...diarrhea. Not only that, but you'd often only have a couple minutes warning before you had to find a toilet...and there's no holding it back.

You get use to the diarrhea after a while. I’ve become a professional at catching it but it is annoying running to the bathroom in random moments.

Hi! Thank you for these very informative videos. They are so helpful! I just wanted to ask if you’ve done (or would consider doing) a video on Ozempic being prescribed for weight loss for people who aren’t diabetic. I’ve been prescribed Ozempic for weight loss (I have osteoarthritis in my knees), but from what I’ve learned about it, the side effects can be pretty brutal for some people. I’m very leery about it. Does it interact with other medications? Anyway, thanks again for the awesome videos and thank you for being so helpful to so many people.

My bud does this, recently I had to listen to how her stomach hurt, boy seeing those scrawny little old ladies sure makes it hard to want to diet, I'm good with that and believing one must feed one's bones while one can (no pun intended)!

I'm an Aussie living abroad,, thankfully l can buy nearly anything at the pharmacies here without a prescription, I've been taking Metformin for around 5 years off label, I've noticed less back pain probably due to less inflammation - that in itself is anti aging

So this is not about diabetes. The people that wrote this paper are already healthy but are questioning if taking this pill in addition to a healthy lifestyle will help them live longer. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Quite simply without Metformin I would be dead by now. The diabetes would have killed me. So it does extend life and quality of life.

As a type 2 diabetic I took Metformin for over 20 years, on the 1st few years i do have my fair share of side effects but that went away a couple more years after and until now i'm taking that, no side effects, it maintains my sugar level at below 7 a1c. I watched my diet even though just a little of exercise.
