dude, that engine is fine, you just need to put seals in without sharp alu can cutting the seals as you insert them. It's a great engine that would have got you to morocco and back with only the final drive issue slowing you down. It was a good bike, a starter and clutch was all it needed really. The rest is you, being too ocd about the trip. Chill.... you don't need perfect, you need functional

Old Yella still has a strong heart. Now that you’ve got Old Yella back, and have no time pressure, you can take your time and sort through the issues from the Africa trip in time for the next big Safari. And, I really enjoy the workshop videos.

Glad you're back safe and got ' old Yella ' home through the misfortune and kindness of the biking fraternity. The fantastic adventure experience which will never be forgotten and is worth making her a keeper alone and fortunately she is old enough to repair indefinitely as such bikes will always be desirable as well as excellent content for your channel .Sad to say Joe looked a little underwhelmed with his bag of Sahara sand ! - but I'd already twigged it was him who was helping Freddie D out -often a common thread and I suspect he will sort the Bonnie out that others had considered not worth repairing as ' too old ' , but like Freddie's similar adventure , he just can't let it go !.

Probably a reasonable solution your proposing, if you manage to get a motor with half or less the milage of your current one you'd be in with a chance with the added bonus of having a cache of spares from the original unit !! Keep us posted 🤔😊😊

I've just had my final drive fully rebuilt with four new bearings, seals etc (like new!). You need special tools to complete the work so worth sending it off. It took less than a week including post times. Not cheap at £625, but should last another 60,000+ miles.
@SidekickSolo
@SidekickSolo 8 месяцев назад
I have seen people just put a new main bearing in and carry on using it but I would like to do a full rebuild. If possible I would like to do it my self even if I have to try and get the correct tool.

I replaced the final drive on my 1997 r850r with a used eBay final drive with 35k miles on her. Cost $250 and took a couple hours to replace. Just make sure you install it correctly. The new to me final drive is working fine. Now, get on the road. 👍👍

@dutchsailor6620

So you replaced a broken final drive with a final drive that also could be on it's way out for the price that it would cost you to rebuild the original final drive? Doesn't sound like a good deal to me.
@clayfarnet970
@clayfarnet970 8 месяцев назад
Sorry but, I disagree with your assessment. You could use that philosophy on ever bike part. The final drive on my 850r went out with over 100k miles. I have limited tools and skills. The labor cost for someone to properly rebuild my drive is over $300 here and at least a month of down time. If it last 30k miles I’ll be happy to replace it again. Avg. 5k miles riding per yr = 6 yrs of fun. I’ll enjoy riding my budget bike while you toil until yours is perfect.

Oil leaks not a problem, just need a drip tray and a regular top up! Always running on fresh oil and cheaper than a replacement engine 😆

The only issue with oil leaks and living in the uk is you end up with oil on the rear tyre and that’s not good on our wet roads 😅

@SidekickSolo 8 месяцев назад
True!
@dutchsailor6620
@dutchsailor6620 8 месяцев назад
Fully agree on this one. For BMW ease of repair standards these setbacks are only nuisances. Also replacing a perfectly good engine to fight an oil leak when you don't even know were it leaks seems a bit overkill for me.
@SidekickSolo
@SidekickSolo 8 месяцев назад
@@dutchsailor6620 I could just change the bearing in the final drive but that may not last due to the fact that the shimming should be checked when changing the bearing. I have reason to believe the bearing has been replaced already at around 80k so hasn’t lasted as it should. The engine has many leaks and the only thorough way of doing this now will be to remove the engine and do a rebuild. The crank has wear marks where the original oil seals have been so ideally would have to be replaced. Is it really worth doing a rebuild on an engine with nearly 100k on it? I may yet go down this route but we will see.
@dutchsailor6620
@dutchsailor6620 8 месяцев назад
@@SidekickSolo The dimensions on bearings are so narrow that reshimming is not necessary. I use the depth of bearings to calibrate measuring equipment, that's how accurate bearings are produced. There are only a few manufacturers of this size (85X120X18) bearings ,SKF and FAG, and these companies produce high quality products. As far as the leaking goes, first determine were the leak(s) is. That can be tricky on these engines because of their design. What helps is to clean the engine with a high pressure washer, let it dry and then sprinkle flour over it. Go for a small ride and when lucky you should be able to see the leaking spots. There is a good change that it is something as simple as a leaking valve cover gasket or the internal "donut" gasket. Also check if you can tighten the head bolts to about 60nm. If the stud thread has stripped in the carter you can't even torque to 30nm. If stripped you can fix them with M14x1.5 bushings that you can make from Audi wheelbolts. If that's all ok I would still take of the cylinders and redo the base basket (liquid gasket, I use loctite 518) and renew the head gaskets, they can start leaking for no apparent reason. Just renew the crankshaft oil seal by using the right seating tool (3d print one) it will seal perfectly on the crank face, just make sure you use a genuine seal, not some unknown after market thing. This all sounds like a lot of work but can be done in a weekend. The only reason to replace the engine for me would be if the cases are cracked or some heavy mechanical damage like broken conrods. These engines can do 300000 miles without breaking a sweat.
@SidekickSolo
@SidekickSolo 8 месяцев назад
@@dutchsailor6620 thanks for that. I will take all of that in to consideration.

How is the GS repairs coming on
@reinmansmith
@reinmansmith 8 месяцев назад
A real result getting someone to bring her home…. Not surprised the stealerships in Spain weren’t interested in doing the repairs, too old for most dealers 🤔 Were the RAC arguing about bringing her home or just wanting to pay you out ‘book’ value? Which of course wouldn’t have been much!
@SidekickSolo
@SidekickSolo 8 месяцев назад
I was disappointed with the dealership. When they told me they couldn’t get the parts I offered to buy them here and send them over. They didn’t respond. The rac didn’t even get quotes for recovery to the uk and that was 2 weeks after they said it couldn’t be fixed. I doubt very much they would actually bring it back and would want to pay me for the bike.

In Spain/Portugal you are better of going to non brand repair shops. Because they work on different brands they are usually more experienced and willing to think "outside the box"
