Does my Boston Whaler sink or float? This old 17 foot Boston Whaler that I got from ‪@fvsoutherngirl‬ is in terrible shape and waterlogged but I knew that when I bought it. After sitting on blocks in my yard for several months waiting for a trailer, we finally get to see if it will float and potentially be a usable boat for me or someone else.
I bought this Boston Whaler Nausett from Luke McFadden back in February and I finally have a suitable boat trailer to finally take it to the boat ramp to see if it floats and if so, how well? Old Boston Whalers like the Montauk or this Nausett are called unsinkable because of their foam core construction but once a boat like this one has been damaged and abused as much as this one has, the foam core can become compomised and waterlogged.

I think I'd contact Boston Whaler, give them the serial number and ask their ideas about drying wet foam. If it's as solid as it seems, it's a matter of making it "pretty" again.

If I were you, I'd do what I could to dewater the foam. Then patch all the fiberglass, replace the drain plug tubes, paint the hull outside, line the inside with spray on truck bed liner, remove the bus seat and install bench seats and call it a day. It wouldn't be "restored" but fully functional and you could have many years of fun with it. I have a 13 foot Whaler in similar shape.

Boston Whaler's are my favorite that boat will not sink it will float filled with water and with 15 people in it.. Restore it

True a Whaler won't sink and as you said you can put a hole in it large enough to swim through fill it w water and 20 people and it wont sink so even if only to make a few bucks it is worth restoring..

If it was my only boat, I would run it the way it is until winter and then bring it inside and start patching it up. I would add everything I need to get it ready for early spring. Use it again next year only fixing minor things during boating season. I would rather be out on the boat then working on it. When I cant be out on the boat do to weather I'm in the garage fixing it or adding uprades.

Used a 13' w/25 hp johnson as a clamming boat in Barnegat Bay in the late 60's early 70's. My first boat, loved it.

Some people say the bunks should extend past the transom. It really seems to depend on the construction of the boat, weight of the boat and size of the boat, but I am not an expert and ask the same questions myself!

It's kinda like a tri-hull. I know they tweaked their designs over the years and this one is probably over 50 years old.

That what the whalers were known for, staying a float. But I noticed back at the ramp, You didn't use your chock block on your tire. Lucky we didn't watch the pick-up float down stream and sink. I've been using chocks ever since I watched that video. Can't wait for your next video.

Have you read Green Eggs And Ham? (It does have a part about a boat in it...) The moral of the story is you need to try something before you can know whether you enjoy it, much as you had to try out your Boston Whaler to see if there was anything about it that excited something in you. And, Surprise! It does. Now keep that in mind when you really consider the restoration possibilities. You may or may not enjoy bringing the boat all the way back, but you won't really know that until you try it.

Not surprise that it would float being a Boston Whaler. Even a water logged one will work fine, as long as there is foam inside the hull. There can't be enough water accumulated to weigh down the boat significantly. You don't have to restore the boat to new. I'd just repair all the holes, sand smooth, apply epoxy barrier coat all over, then paint (maybe Interlux Perfection).

My opinion you should keep the boat give it a good sanding on the outside and eventually a good enough paint job to make it look better for the interior the floor looks structurally sound put down a sheet of plywood amount to pedestal seats to it call it a day.

To make it right, the foam should be removed along with any old structural wood. But since it's floating so well - I might not do anything with it.

Patch up the rough spots, forget painting it, slap a used outboard on it and you are set.

I’m not sure what you should do with it, but I’d be pleased to see you do something with it. I wonder if there is anyway to dry out the insides and patch it so it stops absorbing water. Perhaps a vacuum pump could help dry it out. Hopefully the foam is closed cell, and not open cell so it is less of a sponge. It might be interesting to track weight changes to monitor drying/water log status.

I think you said it was a work boat? No telling how much stuff they had on it and then painted the bottom to match that. Max displacement hull speed will be pretty close whether its heavy or light. So if you use the electric, and no big motor, then the extra wieght will probably give a better ride at those slow speeds. Its great your doing something with this boat. I have almost the same hull and can do test's with my electric stuff. Play off your results.

I would say they use the unsinkable legend in the bahamas because of sharks i would. I have been looking for a old whaler between 18 and 20 ft hard to find at cheap price.

Your lucky day!! I have a 1982 outrage 18’…. Actually 19..hull that is ready for you to restore.. It’s dry and if u r interested.. come to Nc and get it. It’s on a trailer also
