Does natural ruby glow under UV light? Fluorescence in rubies in ultraviolet light

Natural Rubies in short-wave ultraviolet light. Real natural rubies as examples in SW UV light and how much they glow can be seen in the video.
The stronger the glow, the more glowing red it will show in natural sunlight (as the sunlight also has UV light along with visible light). This is why, Burmese rubies are the most expensive rubies as they always (mostly) have a strong glow and it enhances the red color.
Warning: This is not a test to see if the ruby is natural or synthetic or an imitation! - as synthetic rubies also glow under UV light. Please do not do the UV check to see if the ruby is natural or not.

How do you know where they are from. I have several I bought in a foreign country and they glow like this but are uncut and almost solid like a beautiful stone not a gem stone. Just beautiful.

Yes normally burmese rubies will have fluorescence and thai rubies will not (but this is not the 100% test for origin determination).

Is there a way to tell by using UV light if I have a glass filled ruby or composite. I have a ring that glows bright in the dark using UV light but I suspect it’s glass filled . Is there another easy way to tell its glass filled ?

I would suggest to please send to a reputable lab for testing the gemstone. We need many instruments to determine if the gemstone in genuine and with what treatment.

I bought some synthetic lab grown rubies (at least I'm hoping). I did a hardness test on them: they can scratch quartz (amethyst), but can't be scratched in return by the quartz. They glow under the UV as well so I'm thinking they're genuine lab grown rubies and not glass, but is there any additional testing I can do from home? The main thing that makes me skeptical that theyre actual synthetics and not imitations is the price I got them at.

I think you pretty much need a spectroscope, I don't know much on the topic though. I know gem people use handheld spectroscopes pretty often

I have a (supposedly) Burmese ruby that does not fluoresce under my UV nail lamp. Would I need to buy a special torch to test this properly, please? If not, would a Burmese Ruby be expected to fluoresce naturally?
@vikasgandhi11
@vikasgandhi11 2 года назад
Please get it certified from a authentic gemological laboratory. Fluorescence is an indication that they ruby mostly was from a marble deposit (Burma but can be from the origins too).

I am a bit confused because according to one of GIA's training videos, it stated that if a ruby glows too much it is not real. I have a pair of earrings that have the same glows as in your video. are there other tests I can do at to make sure mine are real. thank you
@vikasgandhi11
@vikasgandhi11 3 года назад
I am not sure which GIA training video you saw that says rubies which glow under UV are not natural. This is false. For checking authenticity it is best to get the stones to a reputable gemlab which can test the gemstones for you for their authenticity and the treatments.

I've been told the same, that a ruby with a really bright glow under short wave UV light would be a synthetic and not a natural ruby. Looking further into these claims some say true some say false, very confusing and misleading information on someones behalf!!! Find the best certified gemologist and have it tested, it's the ONLY way you can be 100% positive if your ruby is a real natural gemstone! Furthermore, DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING YOU WATCH FROM SOME RU-vid VIDEO BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE AMATEUR SPREADING INFORMATION THAT CAN BE COMPLETELY WRONG, YOU DON'T KNOW THEIR CREDENTIALS OR MOTIVES BEHIND THEIR FALSE INFORMATION. MANY RU-vidRS ARE UNEDUCATED IN THE SUBJECTS THEY COVER AND HAVE NO CREDENTIALS TO PROVE THE INFORMATION THEY RELEASE AS FACT IS ACTUALLY CORRECT!!! THAT'S THE TRUTH!!!!??? 😇

@@vikasgandhi11 if that's what I'm thinking. I am new to this, I have been fascinated by gems and diamonds since Niño but I had no resources to buy. so little by little I bought some gems and today I have few. but I want to do business around here to start the stone trade, look for my best suppliers but I have come across some jewelers that do not accept other laboratories if they are not from GIA and they do not buy the gems from you even for 1 Dollar

@@sergioortega5869 It is very important to create your niche and your reputation in the business trade and its not easy. First thing is that you do get your gemstones certified if you want to sell (as you are new to the trade and to create your place in there and so the people can trust you). Either GIA or any other reputable lab is good (your prospective clients will tell you which labs they prefer).

@@vikasgandhi11 will ruby fluoresce using a Green excitation light source?
@vikasgandhi11
@vikasgandhi11 3 года назад
@@dl3697 The video shows that rubies glow under UV light - this is because the natural sunlight also has UV light spectrum which causes them to glow or show more color under natural sunlight. I am not sure why green light source will do because I don't see any reason on why someone would want to see if they glow under green light and the kind of light source you are using (unless you are going to be wearing these rubies in jewellery under green light)

It won't. The wavelength needs to be UV.
@dirkvenezuela7387

@@vikasgandhi11 I think he might be considering using a frequency doubled Neodymium laser (532nm) to pump an optical cavity made of corundum and it's very possible that the xenon flashtubes that pump standard ruby lasers have the greatest efficiency in the green wavelengths. I know the blue-ray diodes at 445nm and 450nm offer high strength and great efficiency and will certainly make a ruby glow like no other thing and might be a viable source for pumping a ruby laser. I don't know how well that will work with the uneven heat distribution effects within a ruby stone but if the blu-ray laser light can be diffused or distributed evenly enough, that might make for good efficient pump energy. There are green laser diodes which put out wavelengths of 505, 510, 515, and 520nanometers, respectively and those don't rely on dpss neodymium "middle man" lasers, so an array of those might make for an efficient optical pump, if the rubies respond to those wavelengths.

@Zombie Eric Harris Just look up "365nm uv" and you will see plenty. Just make sure the lens is a opaque black filter and not just clear glass. I think mine is LUMINTOP, but I'm not suggesting it is the best option.
