@@radicalxedward8047 that's very true. But at the same time I'm pretty sure the heat pipes aren't quite as efficient (not to mention tim) so even though it's that good at transfering heat it'll be limited by the wicks,heatpipes and the phase changing. Noctua had mentioned that they were having trouble finding a color compound that would give them the performance they were looking for and that they could use to "color" their heatsinks, because of the results jay gave and I think they know what they were doing. 3 degrees does not seem like much, but if we multiply it by the time of use it becomes something VERY SERIOUS to consider.

A dark / black surfaces makes for a better radiator, so that's probably why. But it's a tradeoff - paint also adds thickness and the paint is less thermally conductive, so there's just a lot of variables. But there are better ways to make really thin coatings using other means (other than paint), that will help improve the emissivity of the surface. The lower the heat load, the less the extra thickness of the coating matters - because the heat has more time to diffuse through the material.

I'd still recommend against painting your cooler for at least four reasons. 1. Paint takes space, and less space gets clogged with dust easier and it's a pain to clean. 2. The performance of your heatsink will deteriorate as it accumulates dust, so you will have to clean it more often. 3. Why not just get a black one with proper coating? 4. Black is good for radiating heat, but other colors might decrease the efficiency of the cooler even more.

I agree. Pre commercial (1:32) that there will be a minimal temp difference. There will be some blockage from the layer of paint therefore hindering air flow so there will be a slight difference. I predict that painting it black, assuming the coat of paint is thin, would improve temperature exchange due to physics (black body radiation) and was looking to see if it'd be worth painting the Noctua NH-D15 black.

A very little bit! The heat can still travel up the pipes, and radiate out the joints to the fins. The paint will insulate it a small amount but as long as airflow is not blocked, it should be quite minimal.

Black colours are meant to disapate heat up to 10x faster than white or shiny. Obviously that is negated by the insulation of the paint, but I wonder if it was anodized black it may see an improvement. Would love to see a video on it @JayzTwoCents

@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 4 года назад
Anodised aluminium is surface is aluminium oxide. Which is in turn technically a ceramic, even though people don't usually call it that way. So they're misleading, but not wrong. @@SianaGearz Erhm no.... Ceramic coating is a real thing and it's used for all metals. @VikingRul3s
@VikingRul3s 4 года назад
@@SianaGearz Here, this was literally the "i'm feeling lucky" google result after typing in ceramic coated metal. I've been a pro-metal worker for decades now. Please use google next time before you claim someone els is lying: • Plasma Spraying: In plasma spraying, ceramic powder is passed through an ionized gas at extremely high temperatures, sometimes approaching 30,000 degrees (F). The pressurized gas speeds molten ceramic particles toward the substrate where they bond onto its surface. The result is a strongly-adhering and high-density coating, but the process can be very expensive. • Detonation Gun: The detonation gun process is most effective for particular ceramic materials, such a tungsten carbide, that are required for producing highly dense coatings on a metal surface. It creates an explosion of oxygen and acetylene gas at around 6,000 degrees (F), melting the ceramic and firing it at high speed toward the target substrate. • Oxygen Acetylene Powder: This method involves heating ceramic powder under a 5000 degree (F) flame, and using compressed gas to spray the coating onto the substrate. It creates porous coating layers with relatively low adhesion strength. • Oxygen Acetylene Rod: In this method, a fused ceramic rod is passed under an oxyacetylene torch burning at 500 degrees (F). Pressurized gas is then used to spray molten ceramic material onto a surface, producing a coating with a high level of cohesive bonding.

I use radiator spray for radiators to heat the house. Inside of them runs really hot water, sometimes so hot the radiator can burn your fingers if you touch it. So it needs the special heat resistant spray. I have a Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH (Mugen 5 rev.B Dual fan edition) and the radiator is silver and it stick out a lot in my PC case which is all black components and glass side. I wanted it to spray with matte black color, but only the very first fin you see, not the other 30 fins. Purely for aesthetics. I used a random matte black spray for 5$ (400ml) like a no name unknown brand and it worked nicely. 0 changes to temps as only the 1st fin nearest to the glass side panel was sprayed. ALL YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO IS HOW YOU SPRAY!!!!! You need to spray in parts, slowly, from a distance of at least 25/30cm, or you will get running drops of paint. Ofc you spray it disassembled from the case with no component even near that shit!!! I covered the rest of the fins with paper and tape. Only the front fin was visible. You want to spray from top to bottom - your hand is above the cooler, not next to it - you avoid the drops better. But really you need the 25cm and spray like pst pst pst pst from side to side, left right, right left etc... and not pssssssssssssssssst in one place or YOU ARE FUCKED!!!!

So, Ive done this test myself with a hyper 212 evo... or several... And what I found in my testing is that if you paint any tower cooler on a 45 degree downward angle where youre effectively NOT PAINTING the bottom of the plates, or even all the way thru the fins (because you only ever see if from the top DURR) what you are left with is a slick looking cooler and temp differences which are so low it can only be considered margin of error.

You could have only painted it from above (and a bit form the sides, I guess, to get coverage on the heat pipes and base) leaving the undersides of all the fins bare. It's not like anyone's going to be looking up from the mobo, or if they are there's much more important things to worry about than whether the painted radiator has complete coverage, and the shiny bottom side might even be useful to your Explorer Smurf as well.

It really depends on the emissivity ratio of the heat sink being used. Thermodynamically speaking, in some cases painting the heat sink will have none to a very small effect upon its ability to dissipate the heat. In others, it can be devastating. It also depends on the type of paint being used. I would recommend anodizing a heat sink if you want to change the color of it.
