Does recapping work? (Patreon preview)

Here's some recent workshop footage on a Yamaha Multitracker MT120 - I intended it as an exclusive patreon video, but since the topic is so relevant to folks with portastudio audio issues I've made it public as an opportunity to upsell my Patreon (link below).
While replacing audio path electrolytic capacitors is NOT a silver bullet for EVERY audio problem, in my experience 4/5 audio problems I fix on multitrack cassette recorders can be at least partly explained by replacing these parts.
This clip demonstrates several examples where replacing audio path electrolytic capacitors was helpful;- The right side of the stereo buss didn't pass signal at all; the output from mixer channels 1 and 4 was attenuated compared to the output from the tape outs; the output from mixer channel 2 was too loud and distored.
It also includes one example where recapping didn't make any difference, because I mistook the change the master buss graphic EQ was making to meter readings for a capcitor issue.
You CAN dramatically reduce the number of caps you need to replace by diagnostic techniques such as using an oscilloscope or audio probe in conjunction with the schematic to figure out where the signal audio signal stops or changes, but often I replace audio caps for an entire stage or even a whole board in one go: This is because the time to install them is trivial compared to access/dissassembly time, and the cost or the caps themselves is trivial compared to how I value - and charge for - my time.
Since these components have a relatively short shelf life anyway, and most units I work on are 20-40 years old, nay replacement of electrolytic capcitors should contribute to the longevity fo the unit. Therefore, I don't agonise over finding the proverbial needle in the haystack with an ESR meter - I'm happy to replace a few healthy caps along with the leaky ones!
Just my approach, your milage may vary.

Hey just wanna say thanks for the wealth of information on this channel. I just purchased a tascam 244 and I'm much less overwhelmed now

What sucks is that by now I'm on my 2nd recap on many of the boards I have from the 80's and 90's. Restoration is a constant run-around. Now now plastics degrade so much, that unless one has a 3D printer to substitute components with, things are often starting to crack. Forget yellowing. It's the shrinkage and various levels of dissolution of everything that is not pure metal. Retro collecting used to a joy, as I got to at least enjoy what I was fixing. Now it' s10% enjoyment and 90% repair time, till something else breaks due to aging. I have a box of something like 50 power supplies from 20+ years ago. Used to be a time when they all worked. These days none of them do. I mean, not a single one. Ones that do turn on, look like a horror show on an oscilloscope, and I wouldn't dare sticking them into any piece of electronics. Electrolytics drying up? That's fine. If they bulge or leak, you can tell visually, that stuff needs fixing. Tantalums - they're a nightmare. They sometimes outright explode, ripping traces off PCB's. Those tiny candy looking things go out with a bang. I thought early on: "these ones don't dry out and will last forever"! Oh, sure they will! Till they freaking explode!

Really good, pragmatic approach you describe in the description - the time taken to carefully dismantle often far exceeds the cap' replacement time. I'd personally much rather spend another 15-30 minutes replacing all the electrolytics if one has gone, and get another 20+ years out of it, than have to go back in again, or even lose a piece of gear if the cap's on the PSU.

Agreed... with hindsight it'd have been better if I made this point during the video, thanks for taking the trouble to read the description

You mention flipping units on ebay, could you include your store page in the description?

Hello Mr. Tetrakan ! Can you please help ? Can 2 portastudios be synched together ? How about more than 2 ? What kind of device would I need to do the synching ? I know the particular portasudio unit has SMPTE capabilities for synching with drum machines and synths , and yes i am aware that I will need to sacrifice one track on each unit. Thank you !!!

Do you buy bulk packs of capacitors, or buy what you’ll need for the project? Do you have a preferred source?

When I srated out I gradually populated a multi compartment box with 20 or so common values . Rarer values or ones I go through in large quantities (10uf, 16v is really common for 80s Tascam mixers and amps for instance) I have a folder with poly pockets holding the different values. I tend to buy at least 50 of a value at a time from Farnell because they are based in the UK - Digikey has a wider range of stuff but they charge me more for postage and end up sending it to me from accross the atlantic and it takes weeks. I avoid resellers on ebay etc because the inherited wisdon from forum knowitalls is there are terrible awful counterfeits out there, though I've never encountered faulty fakes personally.

Yes, thanks! I've repaired a few of these and you're right, there are bad caps all over. Their voltage ratings are too low in general I think. Very nice that there's a very legible silkscreen on both the top and bottom of the boards though!

Agreed, usually the Yamaha PCBs are much more legible than their fostex and tascam counterparts

Agreed, altjpugh It's not a model I have worked on very often, the few I have had here all needed replacement capacitors. Thanks for watching!
