SO.. let me get this right.. If the truck does its own brake applications then its fine.. but if the driver has to brake then it counts against the total?? Why? the truck is probably using more braking then a human would. so its GOOD for it to wear my brakes faster and potentially overheat and warp them??
@dodgeman2324
@dodgeman2324 4 года назад
Napster6 The Exhaust brake is way stronger in Ram then the Ford and GMC , the point is the truck is safer and won’t let ya have a run away, have you ever hauled over 30,000 lbs with a 3500 pickup?

@@dodgeman2324 You have no way of proving that the engine brake is stronger whatsoever.. The computer in the RAM uses the normal brakes more than the computer in the Ford or the Chevy.. That much is blatantly obvious. "Zero break applications" does not mean the brakes weren't used.. That's part of the problem that hundreds of commenters are currently having with this video. And considering that 30,000 lbs of towing capacity takes a CDL I highly doubt you have towed that much so what's your point?

The fact that the Ram held you on the down hill with 0 brake applications is impressive. Downhill with a load that size is FAR more important than how fast you go up the hill. The cummins will never be the fastest when compared to a V8 but the overall towing experience and control can not be beat.

Ford can do the same thing, they just didn't get one with adaptive cruise this year. GM however doesn't offer adaptive cruise yet. They have a following distance alert tho. They did the f450 years ago with adaptive cruise and it held them.

Yep. The Ford will hold it too. They set the slight increase in speed to low. Leave foot off break with cruise on and it will downshift and bring it right back to preset speed. PS. Ford crushed them. Also, he always complains about dodge mirrors and how they can’t telescope in/out. Till now. But they still don’t telescope. Terrible design.

You may be right... But only .0001% of trailers pulled on a givin day travel downhill on the Gauntlet and need 5 brakes but you need to have passin get up and go sometimes daily on the highway.... And the Ram does not have the Ford "JAM"!!! Cummins blow their "Exhaust" gaskets on "Ike type" even shorter hills if on a daily basis!!!! "Perfect run" 10 minutes but none of the trucks can do it????

Just pointing out, if you look at the RPM that the Powerstroke makes peak torque and peak power there is nothing high revving about it. This idea that V8's are racers, and I6's are luggers is a fallacy. Each architecture is very flexible in its design. In this case both the Cummins and Powerstroke are luggers, but the Powerstroke lugs even more considering the torque and RPM!

I wouldn’t want my truck redlining down a grade, im ok with using my brakes a few times im mean thats why you got em. Plus brakes are cheaper to replace rather than an engine or transmission, just my 2 cents
@DelTalkoh
@DelTalkoh 4 года назад
That engine is designed to run like that. It's how an exhaust brake works on a diesel engine. The red line might be at 3200 rpm but those engines can easily handle that, they just stop making power at that high of rpm. Also using exhaust brake is much safer than using your actual brakes. Using physical brakes shifts weight around or can create brake fade. The brake pedal while towing, especially with diesel is an in case of emergency device, you need them to be 100% when you need it.

The engine has an actual cooling system unlike the brakes man. All it does is turn the engine into a big compressor and create some more parasitic drag in order to slow everything down. This doesn't harm the engine or reduce it's lifespan at all. A good driver in a vehicle with exhaust brakes should be using them at the correct speed and getting 90% of his braking from the engine itself. Yes, pads are cheap to replace. But you flat out shouldnt need to use them.

Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of the test. In the beginning you said in cruise control it automatically brakes the truck and trailer. Then said that chevy and ford had more break applications. For all we know the ram braked 20 times. I thought the down hill part was more about making sure you don’t overheat the brakes.

Does the new towing systems actually apply the brakes? My Ram is a 2011 so old school now but all it does in Tow/Haul is change gears and it does have an automatic exhaust brake, which is awesome. But it does not apply the brakes. I don't tow anything near 30,000 lbs, maybe about 15,000, but damn that exhaust brake can practically stop the vehicle even on a steep slope. It sort of cuts out once there isn't enough engine revs but by then it is in first and not going very fast. That is one feature of the exhaust brake is that it is rpm dependent and works much better if the engine is reving high, so it is not consistent. But it sure does work. Almost too well. In my 2011, once you tap the brake it is on and it doesn't turn off until you tap the gas. I don't know what it would do in cruise control as I never hardly use it especially when towing. I just don't find cruise useful because everyone else isn't using it, or if they are they are going slow. Oh and I had an experience once where I hit some ice on a bridge in cruise and that was not pleasant. Thankfully I was able to steer out of it but I was probably 30 degrees to straight when I hit dry pavement again, which caused quite a jolt. So I never use cruise if there is water, snow or ice on the road anymore. All those vehicles you see in the ditch when it's snowing are usually all-wheel drives with traction control. Traction control sure gets you going, but it don't help a lot when you have to turn a corner.

Cummins is the most reliable commercially available engine you can buy simply because of quality control and the inline 6 setup is less prone to failure and is easier to work on then a v8. And Aisin is on par with Allison transmissions. Also lower gear ratios allow for bigger more durable gears with less chance of failure.

So on the down hill test i think it needs to be redone. The cruise was applying brake the whole time and when driving down hill you never want the brakes to be on due to glazing on the rotors which would cause brake failure. As a lot of other people have said on here, I'd be skeptical about the truck sticking in redline for that period of time, regardless of whether you're fueling or not. Diesels aren't designed to turn RPM like that. Their parts like the crank, connecting rods and pistons are all much heavier than a typical gas engine and therefore generate a lot more inertia when they are turning. It's not unheard of for diesel trucks to snap a connecting rod when they start spinning that fast.

Great videos, great content and nice that it is unbiased. One bit of criticism though... for the mirror stick out it would seem to be more accurate to open both windows and get an overall width, cab widths vary from truck to truck. Next up is the max tow rating of the RAM truck, yes it was higher than the other two but the Ford tested had a 3.55 gear set and GM had the only option of 3.42 from what I can see on their web site. If you buy a Ford with 4.10 gears you get an additional 3,400lb of towing capacity for a total of 34,700lb when properly equipped. Lastly, while the RAM sat really well in the rear it looked like it had the front end way up in the air seemingly due to the lever action of the air ride rear end. Perhaps it was in illusion. I wonder what the axle weights are (front and rear) when loaded. I'm a Ford guy but apart form brand loyalty, I like all three brands and can appreciate how you guys set up your videos. All the talk about torque numbers but Horsepower is king when climbing hills. The Ford and Ram were running about the same rpm. Which almost negates the trans.

I love TFL truck. I had a 2013 Duramax and now a 2020 Cummins. Yes, there are things I love about the DMax especially the Allison. The Ram is different, but there are things I like about it better. Apples for Apples, either are amazing trucks and good grief, both have power to spare. Cummins has a little better MPG, Ram has much better appointments for a Tradesman with a couple of options. Dmax is a little smoother and quieter. I originally wanted a BowTie, but the $8,000 difference in price for what I wanted wasn't worth it. In the end, I wanted a diesel because the 2015 Sierra 5.3 depressed me every day I drove it. There is a long story to that. It was lame.

It would be sweet for TFL Truck to do similar tests back when these trucks were "simple" diesel trucks. Like 1999-2003 era. Kind of a tribute to these monsters and how far they've come!

All that truck needs is about 1500-2000$ in suspension upgrades and it’s the perfect rig. Which isn’t much if the truck is making you money. In my opinion ram is changing the game right now. No duramax owner will buy a power stroke and no power stoke owner will buy a duramax... but let me tell you.. both will consider buying a Cummins.

Some people here will certainly disagree, but I would venture to say the people who REALLY tow (talking big stuff, not your two snowmobiles) would rather have control over the brakes themselves.....not allowing the computer to do so. Many reasons, but most importantly heat and ice, the truck doesn’t know these things. As for the exhaust brake....awesome, but I want control over everything with my input, not the computers.

So the one thing you didn’t score. The cooling system of this truck actually handled the demands of the test keeping the truck at standard operating temps. Neither the ford or the gm did that. When the transmission is 170 degrees and the ford and gm were pushing 240 degrees. The engines on the ford and gm were cooking as well. I don’t think rather of them are going to handle that kinda strain as well as the ram over the long haul. Where the ford and gm beat ram was speed and that comes down to hp and since the ram was low in this area compared to the other two it’s not a surprise it wasn’t a drag racer up the mountain

Tyrrell Roach - you have a point here!! I’m saying that, with Ram not being my favourite, but longevity is often a point. In my area you see a lot of these older luxury trucks with some huge mileage! I should pay more attention as to how much maintenance they required to get there. Thanks!

That new Ford 10 speed produces some traditionally unhealthy temps from various videos while towing that I've seen. Time will tell, but all that shifting produces heat, and again, that historically has not be a good thing over time. I'd still hedge my bet at this point with the Aisin/Cummins combo.

Fords mirrors are a little wider but Ram actually has about 10 square inches more surface area. Getting there faster is nice but it's a lot more enjoyable to actually be able to stop/slow down.

@R AJ Robot? Come on, really? Anyway, the brake application on the downhill is not misleading. They are testing if the truck can hold speed without driver intervention (and it did). How is it misleading?
@TheDeezelsmoke
@TheDeezelsmoke 4 года назад
@@brent4adv I'm thinking maybe they should just change the scoring of the downhill test and not say "zero brake applications" since some of these trucks are applying the brakes on their own. They could just subtract a point each time the truck goes 5 mph over their target speed.

One thing that was mentioned and probly was not worded right in this video. Dapt of cruise control will automatically apply the brakes on the truck. So even though the driver never actually put a brake application in it's very possible the truck itself applied the brakes.

@Kwhopperfan
@Kwhopperfan 4 года назад
Jim Twigg that is incorrect, downhill the engine is under load, even in an automatic where a lower gear has been selected and the load being hauled is pushing it down the hill and the engine brake/exhaust brake is applied, the engine is applying its “engine brake horsepower” to slow the vehicle down. In addition, an engine is rated for a maximum RPM because engineers have spent countless hours of testing to determine the rpm in which the valve train can no longer rotate and valves open and close without getting ahead of themselves causing catastrophic engine failure, and that is with or without said load.
