Bv 202 is a Swedish articulated amphibious tracked vehicle designed for operation in particular in snowy conditions or soft ground. This one also is at the Ontario Regiment Museum. But you don't care about that. What you care about is if I fit in it or not.

Chieftain is like the human equivilent of a cat and an open box when it comes to armoured vehicles. If he sits he fits regardless of physics.
@justforever96
@justforever96 4 месяца назад
That doesn't make any sense. Mr. Moran gets paid to do so. And it's "if he fits he sits". Cats like open boxes they fit into. The fact that they got into the box means it fits.

@foamer443
@foamer443 4 месяца назад
As much as they are advantages they are also disadvantages, in that requiring clearing snow off the roof/hatch. The "ladder/step" guaranteed will get packed with snow and ice making usage near impossible. And then just to make life miserable a bit more one accesses by climbing onto the place you are going to sit by standing on it, nicely covering it with snow, ice and mud. Lovely. Just to top it off, going by appearances, one is basically sitting in an uninsulated tin can at 0 - -40 degrees C or F doesn't matter it's just F'ing cold. One can tell this a fine piece of engineering on paper and the crew of twits that designed it never tried using it. Or at least not more than a few hours as opposed to living in it and with it for an extended period.

@@foamer443 Have you driven one? Even been in one? Didn't think so. It has heating and furthermore, the Swedish soldier is dressed for these occasions. This is a fine vehicle with remarkable terrain crossing capability. It's also, like most Swedish platforms, it's modular so it can be turned into different things depending on what you need. Need an ambulance? No problem. Need a troop transport? No problem. Need a forward artillery spotter? No problem.

Bah, I'm 6'3"; almost, 187 cm, and have driven both the 202N and 202NF1 (Norwegian Models) without any problems at all. Well, the 202N was prone to carb fires due to the RPM limiter, and the servo on the 202NF1 was a tad too strong so it was easier to throw a belt without sensing it, as you would on a 202N. We wouldn't wear webbing inside, the centre console was well situated for that. Winter camo was routinely worn. BTW, I was the Transport Officer with a unit in Finnmark about 1980 and on several exercises later. I remember well, when we did a "swimming" exercise with the 202N and F1s, the elderly Lt standing in the hatch of the first BV, with stentorian voice declaring, " Jeg er Redd!" (I'm afraid) as they got close to the water.

The US Army SUSV version of the 206 is much roomier, and the doors aren't nearly as Scandinavian weird. Plus, if you put down two MRE cases on the engine deck, you can sleep quite comfortably in the front cab. The bad part is, the turn indicator lever is on the right side of the steering column, so if you're out for weeks and get too used to it, you'll end up slamming the 70s-80s era automatic transmission of your POV into reverse when you try to drive the day after you get back in garrison.
@christofferwillenfort4035

the reason for the doors can be seen here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandvagn_202#/media/File:MILIF.002281.jpg BV 202 is amphibious and as sweden has conscritps eliminating the need for sealing around doors is good design.

Used to drive those in Norway, during the early eighties. We rolled one down a mountain once. It ended up on its side, and I was stuck inside as the packed snow had jammed my hatch. Had to go through the driver's hatch, but was knocked a bit silly as he kicked me in the head in his rush to get out. Those damn things burned quickly in a crash, as the full tanks behind the driver's cab always leaked badly at the filler cap. And the rear cab had an external petrol heater on the roof which, if in use, was in just the right place to ignite any escaping fuel if the thing rolled over.

The 202 was developed and built by Bolinder-Munktell, which was later absorbed into Volvo, and is today Volvo Construction Equipment. The 206 and its successors was developed by Hägglunds, in competition with Bolinder Munktell over the contract for the Bv 202 replacement. Hägglunds, who also developed the Pbv 302 family of vehicles, and the still current CV90 family is a part of BAE today). One of the two drivers on my squad back in basic service was a tall guy, more than two meters and he managed ok. But considering how cramped I (176 cm) felt just riding in the front passenger seat, I still don't think it was a very comfortable experience. (Never rode the 202. We had two in my platoon that were used as radio relays because they were actually slightly better at climbing than the 206, but the rest of the vehicles were the 206. I wonder why door situation is what it is? Does it miss chassis and side panel is structural?

Easier to make amphibious so it could plow through melted snow, if what I've seen of the 206 is any indication.

Probably because it is amphibious. That door means that the water can go up to its bottom without needing any seals and you can also enter and exit the vehicle in water.

@@daaa3932 correct. the 202 is amphibious without any changes made and was designed to drive on TOP of the snow. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandvagn_202#/media/File:MILIF.002281.jpg

Now that you've got experience from BV, I'd like to hear your oppinnions on "Sisu NA-140". It is a very similar troop carrier.
