There is so much to remember and learn when you get an RV. One of those things has to do with the water pump. I completely forgot if I had to have the water pump running when I'm connected to city water. In this video, I'll show you what I figured out about that as well as how we have our water set up with the water pressure regulator and the water filter.

We just figured this out on our 8th weekend of camping in our Travato. Once you realize you don't need the water pump on city or park water it is so obvious! RV = constant learning (and constant fixing).

This was Great. The only thing I would suggest is when you connect to any water source turn on the water and flush the hose before connecting to the RV. I usually turn on the water at the source before connecting anything. You would not believe the stuff that comes out first at a camp ground before the water runs clear.

We hooked up the filter at the source not thinking about what he said but we did flush the hose out and the black charcoal from the filter came out which I was glad we didn't put that in our tank. So yes whether you hook up at the source or the output to the camper it's good to flush the hose and the filter I think. Just my opinion.
@nortonnewmann3711

Also... Turn off the water at the connection when away from your rig! RV plumbing is not as robust as house plumbing. You may "come home" to a flooded RV! Also, turn off your water pump and hot water heater if gone for awhile. P.S. Our tank water or public hook-up water, although filtered, is only used for showers, dishwashing & toilet flushing. We drink bottled water only. Those blue filters do not filter bacteria or viruses.

@nortonnewmann3711
@nortonnewmann3711 4 года назад
@@Tania-vi7in It all depends on how much you trust your RV plumbing and how good your insurance is. RV plumbing fixtures are not as robust as a "stix & brix". On my Thor built RV, they did not use the wider crimp bands on the pex pipe or brass elbows. So, you may get lucky... but then there's peace of mind...

Does RV water pump need to be on when connected to city water? No, you should not run the RV's fresh water pump when hooked up to city water. The city water system should provide sufficient water pressure for your RV's fresh water system. The pump is designed only to pump water out of your RV's fresh water holding tank when you are not hooked up to city water.
@gkeith4120
@gkeith4120 3 года назад
I want to tell you I have a low pressure pump which is perfect that way I can conserve water when I’m hooked up to the city I get greater pressure when I shower ….now only when I shower I turn on my water pump, therefore the water pressure (and volume) increases even more! Nice for great showers …. something to consider.

If you put the water filter at the source end instead of the rv end, there should be no bacteria growth, or “gunk” in the hose as the filet is blocking all of that. It also helps to keep the hose clean if you ever need to connect from a source to the rv without a filter (perhaps it’s damaged or worn or simply forgotten)

I will add that while watching the rest of your video, you are correct in your thinking about water filtration location. I agree with you there and I was a licensed water distribution operator. We refer to what you described as water quality degradation. I changed you to a thumbs up because of that. Smart guy.
@Deputy2148
@Deputy2148 3 года назад
But if you have the water filter at the point of entry to the hose from the Spicket then you shouldn’t get any bacteria buildup in the hose itself which keeps your hose clean for the long run. Whereas if you do it the way you show in the video you’re getting all the bacteria and everything in the hose and all the bad water in the hose which overtime will mess up your hose. That’s my thinking on it.

Thanks for all the great info! We're full timers (for a little over a year now). We've been at a campground for the last few months riding out the winter. We have full hookups with 50 amp service. Our fresh water tank stays empty & we use a water pressure regulator (ours is dialed down to 45 psi). A few weeks ago our water pump switch on the inside panel was accidentally turned on at some point (I suspect it got bumped in the dark when searching for the kitchen light). When I discovered it was on later, I immediately turned it off. I have no idea how long it had been on, but I suspect at least several hours. With no water in the fresh tank, is it possible I burned the pump out? Or is there a mechanism to prevent the pump from coming on if we're hooked into city water? The reason I ask is there was never any noise from the pump (like there usually is when you turn it on). Any help is greatly appreciated!

5:35 you mentioned bacteria inside your water hose. I think a filter only filters water. That means particles in the water. Purification kills bacteria. You want a filter and a purification system. You can filter water going in your main tank then purify your drinking water.

wondering if anyone has any advice or information. I am hooked up to city water, have never used the water pump nor filled the fresh water tank. flipped on the water heater switch and found that the water pump is leaking after finding a puddle of water coming under the wall in the bathroom. found the pump under the bunkbed as well as the fresh water tank. the fresh water tank is 3/4 full of water and when i turn on the water heater, the water pump leaks at the pump head pressure switch. not sure why there is water in the tank nor why the pump is leaking when I havent utilized either. do i need to drain the water out from the tank? do i do that with the low hot/cold drains? been googling and not finding much and my manual just give vague descriptions of things with no trouble shooting info. please help! thank you!! full time rv resident

I would think that putting the regulator right at the start of the flow would result in much lower pressure at the RV end because the water would lose pressure as it travels the distance through the hose, and then passing through a filter?

Definitely a logical thought, though I would imagine that some filters and hoses do have a max PSI rating and depending on the city water's PSI, it could also cause problems.

if you want perfect pressure as designed by your rv pump, just use the city water to fill your fresh water tank then detach from city water and turn on/use the rv pump. When your tank becomes empty, fill it again from city water. You will never have to worry about water pressure if you use the rv pump.
@JayDee-xj9lu

I have been doing that, but it's becoming a pain to run out after several showers. I have fitted a level gauge to avoid surprises in the night of running out. Therefore using a pressure reducing regulator is probably the safest way to avoid to much pressure.

So is the water pump just to use with the fresh water tank? Will the water pump flush out the water lines with air when no water is hooked up to the RV? ( I really don't want to flush antifreeze throughout the trailer so I was wondering if the water pump would just flush out the water lines if your disconnected from city water and fresh water tank is empty)

The short answer is no, running the water pump with no water in the tank will introduce a little air into the lines but not nearly enough pressure to clear the lines. Regardless, doing so will also overheat your pump causing it to burn out.

I hooked up to city water and I noticed I was leaking water from the lines. I'm on a job site, so I'm here for a long time and not going anywhere. What should I do? Do I need a pressure regulator or do I need to change the fittings?

Yes you should have a pressure regulator and it should be between 30-60 psi and tightening the connections where it is leaking is important as well
