This album means a lot to me. I'm 22 so I wasn't around for their prime. However, this album carried me through High School. Listening back to Street of Dreams after 7/8 years thinking back to the middle of school. The relationships that have since moved forward, or died.
This album definitely doesn't suck. However, I tend to think of it as Axl Rose's solo album. I think once you change your thinking to that metric your opinion of the album changes.
I liked the fact that you are not a Huge Axl Rose fan but you gave the album a chance and gave it a pretty decent score. took a few times for me to like it, but its not a horrible album at all.. just different. Great video Larry!
I have to admit I don't know any of Guns N" Roses's songs Larry even though I know that I've played a few of them, that's sounds weird I know but in the last band I was in it was basically a band just playing for fun,not trying to go anywhere and some of the guy's in the band liked them so we would occasionally do a song,I still don't know how their songs properly go and it was the same for a few other songs by a few other bands as well,is that dedication to the craft or what! Bob
For years I wouldn’t even give it a chance without the original band. Then two years ago I did and I think your idea of just making it a solo Axl album would have been a better idea. It’s not horrible there’s some good stuff but overall it’s ok.
It's exactly everything you said about this album. I 100% agree! B- is right, which makes it a 7.5/10. I was going to say 7/10, but it does have a couple of good songs. Yeah, I say, if they would have taken out the 4 worst songs from the album and saved them as bonus tracks or something, it would have been a far better album. It's too long and bloated! A rule of thumb any band should try follow is: to always try to leave them wanting more! Don't bore your fans.
Problems of this album: 1) is an axl's album labelled as gnr. This is HIS idea of music (u can hear a total meltin pot of NIN, Queen, chemical brothers, elton etc. mixed with his well known love for prosopopoeic lyrics and never ending outros) 2) the bloated overproduction, the mix and the mastering of the album. You know, every time u listen to a CD song u notice another sound, another sub melody etc...but at the end of the day what it really stucks in your head is Axl's voice...it's everywhere every freaking second, it's just annoying. We know you can sing trough 5 octaves, but you don't have to remind us every damn second. U have 10 guitarists and u can't even enjoy 1 riff. And what about the album itself ? It sounds like a demo, too much studio work, too much claustrophobic. Even relaxing songs like catcher in the rye become heavy and hard to listen to without having an headache 3) How the songs were build: too many ideas from too many people trough a too much long period of time. They send to each others pieces of songs trough emails, they cut/copy everything in order to build something, even many solos were cut/copy from different takes (thats the reason why brian May politely abandoned the recording sessions when he was playing on catcher and atlas shrugged,) It was more of a studio effort than a true band effort. I mean there are some good songs in this album thats sound better live, even when axl sings bad, because when a solid group of people work on them they finally square the circle. In a nuthsell, it's an album full of good/great ideas with good/great songs badly developed or not completely developed even after 13 years of work. I enjoy to listen to a couple of songs here and there, but if i had to go trough the entire album...gosh it just kills me.
Your problem is that you automatically judge it based on what you think "Axl's album labelled as GNR" should sound like instead of judging it based on what it actually is.
It´s not that bad actually. But after so many years of waiting the expectations were too high. I was disappointed when it came out, but can listen to it now
You want me to prostitute myself to say what you want to hear? Sorry, I won't say "this i love", cause when i listen to this album i fall into a Coma. So don't damn me, it is what it is. Pheraps i'm wrong but there was a time when gnr played better songs.
In all fairness, GNR had a brief spark in the late 80s and early 90s, but they have become an oldies touring act. Nothing wrong with that - I'm a huge fan of the Beach Boys. I give them credit for monetizing two or three albums to appease their fanbase.
I remember buying this cd at best buy a little after it came out because it was so cheap. I don't think I've listened to it since 😂 now I can't get rid of it because no one wants it
Axl had to know not everyone would be on board with this. Industrial is a far cry from the bluesy hard rock they'd done before. And the Illusions were different from Appetite, but still mostly accepted in the GNR fandom.
Like a lot of bands, Guns 'N Roses kinda peaked with their debut. Appetite for Destruction was great. Do they deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I don't think so.
Good review…I got bored fairly quickly but listened to the whole thing. They are a band I’m not a fan of, particularly Axl as a person and his lyrics…but I thought it was nothing horrible. Just overlong and that made me totally bored. Buckethead is interesting, and I’m not a huge Slash fan either, so the trade off wasn’t a deal breaker to me. But yes, no reason to call this Guns N Roses, this is an Axl solo album. There are probably a couple songs I could warm up to, but boy not worth the wait.
The issue I always see people make is they have huge expectations of what they think it should sound like instead of listening to what it is and accepting the fact that their expectations are exactly that, expectations and they should judge it for what it is. People would be pleasantly surprised of they listened to it for what it is and didn't place their own unrealistic expectations on what it "should be".
I only enioyed Shacklers Revenge and Better. But the album is not to my taste. It is to far from what I liked about GNRs AFD, UI 1 and UI 2. Even some of the reworked stuff that didn't make the album like Hard Skool was more to my taste than the whole album. But that song wouldn't have made it on Appetite. Hope any new album they do returns back to older style GNRs but I doubt it. They are so far from that life it wont resonate the same. Hopefully we can be pleasantly surprised, despite my pesimism.
My observations and opinions over the years is that diehard GNR fans only ever hated this album because it wasn't the original band members. Mostly had to do with the fact that the absence of Slash was definitely felt many fans never really bothered to give it a chance and actually listen to it at the time this album was released.
I respectfully disagree, you have to listen to it as it is and refrain from comparing it to anything else. I am 100% sure that people compare it to Appetite for Destruction. AFD was magic in a bottle and you can't compare anything to it. If you do then you will be disappointed. Judge it based on its own merits and you will understand that it is great for what it it is.
I agree. The only songs I can even suffer to listen to are Chinese democracy and “if the world” or whatever the name is. The rest are absolute trash in my opinion
