Have you ever tried tracking down the original use of the Wilhelm scream? We did that shit in one of my film studies classes back in like 2013 or '14, and holy shit some of the earliest uses are unintentionally hilarious now. Like, an old man cowboy catching an arrow to the thigh, and screaming like dying storm trooper is one of the funniest goddamn things I've ever seen.
Honestly in Belgium Sonic was as popular if not more popular then Mario. I was so happy when I got a Game Gear and was able to play Sonic 1 and 2. My parents could never track down Sonic 3.. propably because it's called Tripple Double 😆

Man I remember the jump in price from the ps2 era to the ps3, ps2 were normal to have even in "humbler" homes, so the tectell's megadrive turned a lot more common in the poorer houses, like mine. Even then, sonic is beloved asf here, my sisters played the og megadrive and so did my nieces, the tectell sonic games weren't half bad tbh. The whole game scene in Brasil is a whole thing, people still play neo gen arcade machines with cadilac dinossaurs metal slug and KoF, to a point, that if you ask to a person in the Fluminense part of Rio their KoF Trio the WILL ANSWER WITHOUT THINKING because thats how formative it is, these bootleg are still one of the main form we get access to gaming outside of the wealthier families that can buy computers and consoles until mobile cellphones really poped up. the way "third world countries" engage with gaming is really under-looked compared to the rest of the world.
Hey~ As a reference for any future Japanese dubs you'd be interested in. Cartoons of that era being dubbed and released for Japan a decent amount of years after the series initially aired or finished isn't that unusual. TMNT 2003 for example had it's first 3-4 seasons dubbed and aired in 2007 in japan. Which was when the series was ending in North America.

I used to be part of basically all of these in my teenage years. I sure NEVER thought that I would see Power Sonic be featured in a video, at least not outside the brazilian youtubesphere. and talk about the dedication, I got internet access for the first time in the early 2000s and Power Sonic was one of the first Sonic sites I've ever visited back in 2001/2002... the fact that they are still going strong to this day is very commendable
Quite peculiar timing for this; I managed to find out how to access a few Korean online shops and had a bit of a crisis over the prospect that MAYBE a Korean dub of the Sonic OVA exists because of a very weird "Sonic Vs. Robot Sonic" listing. (If you're wondering how this came up, I was searching for any VHS tapes of the Korean version of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, for their exclusive locally produced live-action segments)
Thats because a Korean dub of the Sonic OVA does exist, there are clips of it online but the full dub still hasn't surfaced. There are a few people that own the VHS or VCD release' of it but haven't released the full thing either. There's also a Korean DVD release, but its just the English and Japanese dubs with Korean subtitles. So the only way to find it is to find one of these VHS' or VCDs, similarly to AOSTH and SatAM who's Korean DVD release was also just the English dub with Korean subtitles.

I recently had to binge all 40 episodes of Sonic Underground for my own channel, and...I actually thought it was promising the first few episodes, but other than the Knuckles episodes, almost everything else follows a basic formula of setup -> forced drama -> Sleet and Dingo shenanigans -> resolution -> never see the boring once-an-episode characters again. (Sonic and Manic crossdressing optional)
If we have a supposed air date wouldn't it be logical to find a japanese tv guide from the era? There are archived scans for American tv guides going back to the 70s on the internet. I don't know if tv programs were even published in print in Japan, but if they were it would be it one of them. But it would be difficult to read a TV guide in Japanese unless you could read the language.
They did have TV guides, and it would be probably be very easy find in the case this actually existed, although online archives of them might be another matter. Most of the results for Japanese TV guides are selling physical magazines second hand. You wouldn't exactly need much knowledge of Japanese to read a TV guide.

This awakened a deep memory for me. When I was little I saw a few episodes of Sonic Underground at a friend's house, making it basically my first anime. For years, it was the only reference I had when people mentioned Sonic (I'm not a gamer) but I was never sure that it was a real thing. Now I know!

i LOVED THE ARCHIE COMIX. they were the only comic series i ever followed. i loved Ken Penders characterization of everyone, and original characters. i watched a bit of the sonic underground show. didnt like it too much though. guess i was too old at the time for it.
Your conclusion is right on the money. This show was actually a product of the bizarre conflict between SEGA Japan and SEGA America (as was it's predecessor). It was around the time SEGA Japan took direct control over SEGA America and fired everyone in charge that this show got licenced out. Problem is the contract was set in stone and production had already begun (this was in 1996). So the production team was in a weird situation where they only had the rights to use some of the characters, not all of them, as the licence came from SEGA America, not SEGA Japan and they could only licence out what they had the right to licence only. They also got ghosted by SEGA because SEGA Japan wanted nothing to do with them and the American branch was in chaos after the gutting. So they were left pretty much on their own so they just made it up as they went along. So I'd hazard a guess as to why it never got a Japanese dub... Amercians and Japanese have polar opposite views of copyright. Americans view copyright as a form of ownership. While the Japanese view copyright as a leash to make sure they always stay in charge and retain complete control over their own creations. To them their creation is more important than money, to them having complete say over their creation is paramount if they give you any degree of permission to use it. It's about respecting the creator and following the wishes of the creator. Compare that to America where money is the only controlling factor and respect is optional. And that there lies where most of the conflicts arise from in terms of Sonic.
I"ve just started the video, but I swear to God I watched episodes of this show as a kid on RU-vid. So that would have to be around 2006-2010. I admittedly feel a little bummed that I was born a bit late for the beginnings of other stuff, but I find it funny that this is something I did sort of witness (I don't remember any of it other than being a rock based Sonic property). Though I did get into anime in the 2010's so I get to experience being shocked at how Twitter people complaining about anime staples for longer than I've been watching (over a decade). I think it's plausible for the show to have been dubbed, shelved, and aired years later to capitalise on Sonic X. Kinda like the Japanese S3 of Sonic X airing in 2020, or the 98-episode Canadian dub of Dragon Ball Kai never seeing the light of day. It's unlikely in this case, since there's nothing to corroborate the Wiki dates, but weird stuff like that does happen.
Capitalize on Sonic X? I don’t think you can capitalize on show that wasn’t popular like Sonic X. Also if they *were* trying to capitalize on it why would they chose Sonic Underground of all shows over AOSTH or SatAM?
@@Jaysterrr In this hypothetical situation of the licensor or network sitting on the unused dub, another Sonic series would be the best opportunity they'd realistically expect. Any new Sonic series will promote the rest of the franchise to some degree. I don't see why Underground would be any less appealing (to broadcasters) than the other two American Sonic cartoons.

@@Jaysterrr A channel might have acquired the rights very cheaply (on account of it never finding a Japanese home when it was new), or with other cartoons in a batch, and then realised that they had a modicum of free publicity from X and Heroes. This is a hypothetical. I'm not saying "this happened", I'm saying "it's not as outlandish as you might think".
Reminds me of the fact that the SNES game Super Widget was supposed to see a release in Japan, but never did & it's unknown if the cartoon based on it aired in Japan & if it did, whether or not it had a dub or if it was kept in English & Japanese subbed.
Sonic Underground had some really well written plots and was a really interesting premise. But... how do I put this? Apart from similarities to the Saturday Morning series, it didn't really feel like a Sonic property, and I would dare say that trying to "be" a Sonic cartoon weighed it down. If it were its own, entirely new series without ties to Sonic, it may have been something far more remarkable.
My younger brother born in 2005 found this show and watched it as a kid. I thought it was annoying and Manic was the only worthwhile character. At the time, I was more concerned with my collectable Moshling toys.
Hazel using the Sonic movies as a reason the dub must exist really stings right now, as I sit in Japan, waiting for it to be August so I can actually watch Sonic 2 legally.
Have you watched Gokudo? It's the first anime that I've watched and was also released in 1999, I recommend it especially since most of the dub is on RU-vid.

Pretty cool to see someone finally look into this topic more thoroughly, personally I have my own theory that the also rumored Japanese dub of AOSTH could've possibly existed and have been a test by DIC to see if there was interesting for their video game animated stuff in the region. I speculate that AOSTH could've been dubbed as a test and aired in a few specific regions of Japan on regional/local channels and possibly even got a limited VHS or laserdisc release that of course would be mega rare, especially that I think they probably would've chosen initially to release it as rental-only. But ultimately it would fail to get the attention and viewers necessary to continue its distribution or release any of the other Sonic and Super Mario DIC shows. Its also possible that both AOSTH and SatAM were dubbed for their first few episodes and aired to see which one would take off, which ended up being none of them and lead to the aforementioned cancellation of any further plans (sort a reverse version of what happened to the 1989 English dub of Dragon Ball). Sonic Underground could've been the final last ditch attempt by DIC to find some success in the region and released a Japanese dub of it that aired fully once on Tokyo TV, but of course also failed and fell into extreme obscurity just like the possible dubs of the other two Sonic shows. But again these are just my speculations and not much else, although a supposed air date of 2004-2005 wouldn't be too crazy considering other countries such as Poland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Iran, Turkey etc. aired Sonic Underground during the 2000s and even early-mid 2010s. Personally I'd like to see some search efforts for other dubs of Sonic media that have more of a confirmed existence to them like the Albanian and Korean dubs of AOSTH and SatAM, Korean and Cantonese (TVB version) dubs of the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA or Persian dub of Sonic Underground (which is technically fully found, but hidden behind a paywall). Yet again, great video I really enjoyed it 😎👊
I like to imagine that Hazel is a very specific kind of detective. She says "just one more thing" and leads into a 15 minute well-researched spiel about Sonic dubs and the culprit's alibi falls apart like paper.
so, sidenote on the power sonic forums: yes, that and orkut groups were the main hubs for sonic the hedgehog discussion in brazil in the '00s but, there was lot of action happening on other sources like game magazines and tv guides, and while i doubt the japanese dub is true, i think it mightve started as a tv guide rumor... as it isnt unherad of, since that was how the dungeons and dragons final episode rumor started here, as with the export of the rude removal dexter's lab episode also got brought up, and rumors of cancelled games, sequels and finally dubs... so maybe it was a tv guide mentioning the show airing in the us *and japan* so the rumor snow balled from there? isnt impossible but, its just a theory on my part at best. great video as aways tho, and im looking foward for the next one~ keep with the great work queen 💕💕💕🏳️🌈
When I was a kid, Sonic Underground was MY sonic media. I loved it to death. I still remember the Main Theme by heart. I even wanted to be Sonia for Halloween. Looking back, it was absolutely ridiculous and horrendous looking but It will always be my sonic show. Im so glad hazel uploaded this. A great surprise!

In all my research of Sonic Underground, I never found a dub of it in Japan. I met Yuji Naka at SoS 2016 and had him sign my SU DVDs, he didn't recognise them, but then recognised "Manic" from my cosplay of him. That along with a friend over that way who said she liked it but had to watch the Spanish/Portuguese dub because she couldn't find a Japanese version of it.
I'd say 95% of PS2s sold in Brazil were modchipped. Most of the ones I've seen were NTSC-J models (supposedly sold exclusively on Asia). I can't prove it, but I suspect the PS2 became accessible (marginaly cheaper) here for being contraband from China coming from Paraguay. Someone was installing these modchips and I don't think it was here, the PS2 modchip is notoriously hard to install and if you went to a fucking mall the PS2s sold there were already modded. There was an entire grey market around PS2s and burned discs on Brazil back in the 00s, and to some extend there still is. I knew only one guy who ever had an original XBOX and only saw like 2 used Gamecubes in my whole life. Both of these systems were moddable and could run pirated stuff, but for some reason were WAY more expensive than a PS2. Nowadays gaming is more accessible and "legit" but not by too much. It got better for a while than politics happened and the price of everything skyrocketed again. I think the PS2 is STILL the most played console here.
In some communities I remember visiting my cousins and they had a type of internet cafe but with modded ps2s all in one room and then you would pay to stay for an hour or more and could play any game they had in their collection. It was an awesome way to just find new games and hang out with friends as a Brazilian kid in the 2000s
I'm Uruguayan and can say this is also exactly how it was (well, I haven't checked my old ps2 to see if it's NTSC-J... I think its NTSC-U though). I only knew of xbox and gamecube because of the stickers on some of the pirated game CDs I bought lol. I remember having a ps1 game that showed these different console logos and wondering "woah what the hell are those??" There were a ton of N64s though, but only in like, restaurants and places where kids' birthdays were held, for some reason
I find it funny because in Algeria too, the most common console of that gen was the PS2 with a modchip. As for installing one, I've never heard that it was hard because you could take a genuine console to any console reparation shop and install one for like 50€. It was definitely well worth it (the price of one single original game being a bit less than the minimum monthly wage). We also had a grey market of burned disks with real mortar and bricks shops that only sold that (and cracked PC games).

It actually makes sense that Brazil has been secretly hoarding all the Sonic games tbh since there are more Japanese people living in Brazil than any other country in the world (other than Japan of course). I’m from Argentina and I grew up with Los Caballeros del Zodiaco aka Saint Seiya AND Spanish dubs of the Ranma 1/2 anime my other anime-inclined friends went WILD when they found out.
I was stunned when it end out in Brazil... Like, there's a really sonic crazy here and a whole specific way we interacted with videogame (I had a Mega Drive, even though I was born on 1997) and japanese culture in general... Like, we have kinda a proximity with anime since the 70s... Things like Osamu Tezuka's adaptations aired on big public channels on TV... As a child I had literal nightmares that the show wasn't canceled and I had burned a disc with the rest of the show somewhere in my house, but could never find it. My view would pan out of a supposed location the disc was in/at, a shitty disc with garbage scribbled on it twirling in the center of my vision. 4 year old me just could not let go.
My personal ongoing Sonic Mystery: Athair the Echidna (the one allegedly voiced by Junichi... *yeah, right*) ... Anyway, Athair actually originates from the Archie Comics series as an offshoot member of the Brotherhood who chose not to spend their lives guarding that shiny big rock and became a roving guru for Tails and Knuckles. He was created for a Tails mini-series by Mike Gallagher (IIRC, I think it was Mike; he was one of the only echidnas not created by Penders and thus one of the only echidnas he didn't try to claim the rights to when he yanked Archie's football away)... And as a comics exclusive character who comes from an unrelated continuity (here's the mystery) how the h-e-l-l did Athair wind up in those episodes of Sonic Underground? I don't believe Gallagher wrote or otherwise had anything to do with the episodes in question, but the relationship to Knux is way too similar to have been a coincidence. It's also a little funny you put some Paranoia Agent footage in there, because Hirukawa (The corrupt cop who's also perving over his own teen daughter) was voiced in the dub by Deem Bristow, aka the pre Mike Pollock (so SA-era) Eggman. IIRC, it was one of his last roles before his untimely demise in 2005. Sorry for the tangent: You've become one of my favorite RU-vidrs since before that Sonic Adventure video, hazel. The SA vid just cemented you as my fave. Keep up the great detective work!
I don't get whiplash from the fact that Underground came out as the same year as Sonic Adventure anymore, but it still floors me that it somehow happened regardless.
