You posted this April of 2020. Since then we’ve seen a global pandemic, lockdowns, supply chain shortages….. I hope you consider yourself a prepper now. Ours has doulton candles. It’s been working well for us forever. I understand that the British Berkefeld and Doulton candle filters are both made in the same factory in the UK. I’m quite pleased with ours.

Firstly... yes you are a prepper ! You prepared for what could happen so you're a prepper simple as that !, nothing wrong with that, after all it's your job to prepare and protect your family. Secondly the difference between the US black Berkey carbon filters and the UK ceramic filters is that the black Berkey filter claims to filter out viruses too. The micron size is smaller and therefore can filter out smaller unwanted rubbish. They are also a lot more expensive too and you have to prime them which is a pain whereas with ceramic filters you don't. Stick with the ceramic, they are perfect for what you're using them for. And remember.... each 7" super sterasyl candle is good for about 2000L of water so if you use x2 candles then you won't need to change your filters until you filter 4000L and so on. if you use x4 candles then 8000L. That looks like an 8.5L Doulton filter so if you use 8.5L of water per day and have x2 candles then you shouldn't need to replace them for 470 days and to be honest if you are only using it for tap water then I would use it for even longer than that. 7" Super Sterasyl candles cost £15 each BTW. I've been using this system for years to filter my tap water and have also used it with rain water too. I have x2 150L rain water collection tanks in my shed which I also added 30ml of bleach into to chlorinate the water and kill off anything that may have grown. My ceramic filter done a great job cleaning the rain water and we couldn't tell the difference in taste between filtered rain water and filtered tap water. We also use filtered water for our dogs, cooking and kettle. And the easy way to check your water level is when the water start to slow down coming out of the spigot. No need to lift it up, just refill the top section when the water flow start to slowdown. Anyway, now get yourself some 500ml reusable water bottles and never buy bottled water again. @@Ambleford one other thing to bear in mind - the berkey purifier cartridges are compatible with the berkefeld system. They are more expensive (about £110 for a pair) but a pair will last in this system up to 6,000 fills -- roughly 16 years at one fill a day -- if you clean them regularly (about every 6 months). BTW - the berkey cartridges are called purifiers rather than filters because they are so much more effective. They do not remove fluoride but you can buy attachments that fit on the underside of the top cannister that remove fluoride and all heavy metals (about £40 a pair). And yes... you are a prepper. I have just bought one for myself from doulton. Unfortunately they didn't have the 8.5 litre only the 6 litre one as its only me and my hubby. I bought it. I've got the atc candles and it's nice to know I can use the berkey black filters as they last longer.
"I'm not a prepper" ... cool story bro. That used to be my catch phrase too, at the point where I had started to prep, but didn't want to accept I was prepping. Good for you fella. For what its worth, Sweden has made prepping a national responsibility and has sent out pamphlets telling people what they need to do. I think the world has started to wake up to the fact that real life isnt like a TV commercial. Just because you have consumer rights, doesnt mean that your supply of food, water and power will continue after an EMP strike or a storm force gale.
@@ramshackle7130 In the end I went to Doulton (who make British Berkfeld under license. I got a 6l litre Berkey clone, with 2x Super Sterasyl filters. I also got their Doulton® TASTE water filter bottle. Its basically a fill&go water bottle for my desk with filters at least as good. Im actually very happy with both. The Berkey does need to be "maintained", ie, the filtration is very slow, but once you get it rolling and you are topping up, you can pretty much keep it with 3+litres in it easy. The water bottle is also great instant water. Its basically an inverted gravity filter, so you fill it with water, then hold it up and suck the water straight through the filter. My lessons learned: It was definitely worth shopping around, because I ended up paying 50% of the first listings thrown at me by Amazon. As long as the filters are legit, it doesnt really matter if the actual unit is a clone or not. (Ive seen someone install sterasyl filters in a homemade plastic tub system) I thought the water in my area was pretty good, but I DID notice the water tasted better after filtration. Its worth doing further research on filter types and filtration, because some areas have specific issues (like nitrates) that may require special filters. Absolutely no regrets. I think all in, its cost me about £140 and all my water tastes better, and if there is some accident at the water works, Im going to be poisoned 99% less. Good luck Ramshackle

I think for the price it should come with a stainless steel tap as standard. having said that I love mine. I got mine from Andrew’s water treatment and got a great deal with a spare set of filters. I agree about having a way to see how much water is in the base, but my friend who lives in Kansas knocked hers and broke the view tube off, ruin)no the unit. As I’m clumsy I’m probably as well without that risk,especially with three cats constantly jumping on the counters as well! Also each filter is filtering- so actually with two filters they last a year at average use. I definitely taste a difference in the taste and I no longer have to descale my kettle or cat fountain! I drink far more water since having this and have noticed the difference in my skin and general well-being.

Well, you sure sound like a prepper to me. And that's not a bad thing, especially if you've read Deep Adaptation or How Everything Can Collapse, both of which make it really clear that we're heading in a desperately difficult direction. I always used to laugh at those crazy American preppers with their rocket launchers and semi-automatics, but it sppears they were onto something. I prefer the gentle and optimistic view of preparedness highlighted in Deep Adaptation myself, but if one if well informed ecologically, politically and economically then it isn't unreasonable to perceive the storm clouds to be gathering and therefore have the protection of your family and loved ones in the forefront of your mind. The Berkefield filters are fantastic, by the way. Incredible build quality and worth every penny in my book.
