I had a very literate friend, exactly ten years my senior, who passed away about 5 years ago around the age of 65. He was a science fiction fan, but he did not like Tolkien. I once read to him the exciting passage of how the Rohirrim broke upon the outskirts of the Fields of Pelennor and entered the war at Gondor. He dismissed it as "Derivative." I don't know why. I'm ashamed I never asked him, "Derivative of what?" I'd love to know who inspired Tolkien, and read him too!

Holly Ordway has a book out about the contemporary (at the time) fantasy literature Tolkien read. It's on my list to read but it might give you some insight. Though it also might be derivative of the ancient stuff he loved like the Kalevalla. I'm missy definitely but well read on that front.

@aureentuluva514 i don't get what you mean by "I'm missy definitely..." I will definitely check out Holly Ordway, if I can afford to.

Typing too quickly on the phone. Was supposed to say "I'm most definitely not well read".

@@aureentuluva514 I enjoyed hearing your Tolkien origin story. My dad gave me a copy of the hobbit before I turned 10, and that was in the early 80s. I used to read it under a tree in the yard. The PJ movies were an amazing thing to see come to pass after such a long time. It interests me to see how many people came to the stories first through the movies, and yet the books remains respected and relevant. I think the prime series may do the same for another generation… I hope

@@user-ss8ie1vq2e I sure hope it does! My hope is no matter how good or bad the series is, it will point people to the source text and they'll find the joy we find in reading it.

@@aureentuluva514 One thought springing from the series that I loved, the idea that hobbit doors are round because they were once the harfoots’ wagon wheels! I don’t remember where in fandom I saw that theory, but I thought it was brilliant.

Right! I don't remember where that came from either but it's a fun idea.

Welcome back! Like you, I've been reading LOTR annually or semi-annually ... but I've been doing since the 1970s. But even with that many times through the book, I've looked forward to every video you've posted! And of course, I'm eager for the continuation of the -- I suppose we could call it a "book club" -- and can't wait for you to begin sharing Book 3 with all of us. Thank you!

Thank you so much! I've got a few videos ready to come out. The upload schedule will have to be a bit slower out of necessity for the first couple months but I should be able to pick it back up around March. Thanks for watching!
