This is so spot on. I'm 77 and I was getting kind of fearful of leaving my house. Well, prices skyrocketed and I couldn't do enough work to keep up rent. I saw it coming so I started transforming a shuttle bus and here I am today in Quartzsite. It was painful giving away or selling everything I worked for in the last 30 years after building up again after divorce. When it was finished I was free. Scared, but free. Now, after a couple months, I'm still a little scared but feeling great. Don't have to worry about the lawn, gas and electric going up all the time, on and on. I no longer am living to societies expectations, and it has freed my mind and relieved most all my stress. No old age home for me, than you.
Good for you brother, Way to go. We did 21 months in our 1995 class B in beautiful La Jolla, California. Getting through a few organizational things before eagerly getting back to that life pretty soon, but with lots of longer distances for seeing the many great places in the west we have yet to go to. More true adventure awaits, God willing.
Old mechanic. Little has changed from the very old "Living in a van down by the river" Lot of these "New" campers + Glampers think they pioneered this stuff lol Just don't get caught up in the whole "Solar power" nonsense. Solar,is small scale like vans+ RVs is very extremely weak actual steady working amperage. Comparing solar to a gasoline generator,is like comparing a mouse to a elephant,it's basically a failure,which many of these newbies are waking up to every day.... Don't fall for solar, but it's a great way to charge your cell phone, IF the suns out 😃
@@Bubba24-ne4zpMy experience of solar is very different from yours. When we left to go sailing full-time in 1995 solar was $5.30 a watt. For 10 years on the boat we only had 220 watts of solar but it kept our batteries topped off and ran our water maker. Back then generators were a waste because you couldn't get a high amp battery charger. You had to run a generator all day to put back what you used up in lights the night before charging at 3 to 5 amps. From 05 to 2015 I traveled 80k mi All over the US Canada and Baja in my Toyota class C and solar ran my dorm refrigerator through an inverter 24/7. I'm an old mechanic also 77yo and solar rocks. 😊
As a retired truck driver I miss seeing the country. I hated driving a semi, but loved driving around the country. We thought we would travel the country in our pickup camper, but brain cancer had different ideas. For those of you doing van life, enjoy. Wish we could be there with you. God bless.

Very inspiring. Im currently planning out a van build to live a nomadic lifestyle. It’s quite daunting, but I really want it. I’m sick & tired of feeling bogged down by the pressures and expectations of living “the American dream” of which I’ve realized in the past couple years that I want no part in. I myself am 25 years old, that quote speaks volumes to me because I’ve been trying to get that point across to people I talk to about my desire to live in a van/rv and live on the road. Most of em either don’t understand it, or they do get it, but are so brainwashed by the system and their comforts that they think I’ll be choosing homelessness. End of the day… all I want is freedom. As much as I can get. I can’t stand the 9-5 grind, going to the same places day in and day out. It’s too meaningless for me. I don’t want to end up like countless others who in old age wish they did more in their youth.
For me, the process of getting rid of the “stuff” was satisfying and liberating. It was satisfying to see the objects that had served me well go on to serve someone else. Along with the physical house cleaning came a personal house cleaning. I decided what and who I wanted in my life and jettisoned all the rest. I found peace! I found a new comfort zone in my own heart that doesn’t rely on my physical space. I can be anywhere and my comfort zone is there with me.
@Gail-gf7km- I always looked at Nomads as hippies on wheels. The hippies from the 60s got rid of the consumer mentality . These material items keep us locked down and staying at home to protect it all. The government wants us to be on the grid and paying taxes. Watching T.V and being on social media looking at other people live their lives is such a waste. People want Van life and 100% non failure rate.
@@LisaLightning Everyone's situation is different, you have to do what works for YOU. Maybe you can put some things in storage for now and figure that part of it out later. Just factor in the storage cost and don't make things stressful or complicated for yourself. Also there are all types of vehicles. There are vans made for wheelchairs etc. Figure out what you need and do the research to find what vehicle has it or who can build it for you. There are disabled people out there. Listen to their stories. Maybe get in contact with Bob or another seasoned van lifer like Gloria on Wheels and get a personal consultation. There is a plan for everyone. Like Bob said we can't let things hold us back from truly living.

I’ve had a few things starting out that sucked in my van life but I knew going in that there would be a learning curve. But that was part of the draw for me is figuring those problems and dealing with it. At 67 I’m doing really well in my van life! Cheers!😊thanks Bob😊
65 and over 5 years into it. It has some good points and more than a few bad. A good place to park at night and dealing with the weather can be a real problem. Getting pretty tired of it myself. Of course owning or renting real estate has it's problems too.
yay, Wisconsin! I'm 72, been at this 3 yrs & I love it! Going into my 3rd yr as horse camp host for OR state parks, which is BEST way to spend retirement, esp on limited SSB. Can't afford space rent on $1100/monthly, but I've got the best looking front yard that changes every 4-6 months & unlimited electricity, water, sewer, laundry facilities, along with the greatest group of dedicated co-hosts living RV or van life!
I've had to settle back down in one spot due to health but I LOVED being a van dweller! edit: Lived in my van for 5 years on purpose ...I knew my health was waning and I wanted this experience and adventure of traveling the entire USA! Very rewarding!

In 2 weeks I’ll start my 4th year in my travel trailer & I haven’t been happier or more comfortable. I’ve always had a deep craving for adventure. I love it. I will admit it’s not always great doing it alone. It would make things easier & sometimes more enjoyable with a partner, but I don’t ever want to give this up. I’m seeking a new purpose now that I’m a widow & the kids are grown & gone. I think when people are considering this nomadic lifestyle it would be easier if they were able to just ease into it over a period of time with multiple trips. To work out their kinks & figure out what works best for them. I tent camped from the time I was 7 months old & have a craving for nature that won’t quit. I think always having had that camping life made the transition easy for me.
I agree. I plan on easing into it when I start. I want to go out a few months at a time and be able to learn. I won't have a partner, but I haven't for a good while now anyway.

I'm planning a four month trip in 2025 and plan to practice in 2024 with shorter outings. I am nervous/excited as I'll be going alone... solo female... across Canada. I have traveled alone for years but refer to myself as a ten day girl because the thing that always calls me back is my studio. Knowing that, I'm fitting one into my 13' Boler. Determined to make it work. This trip is on my bucket list. I'm 61.

I spent my FIRST night in my van last night. Still navigating. So glad I decided to do this. I’ve got plenty to work out but I’m in it to win it!!! It takes a special person to be able to do this bob and you are that special person. Hoping to meet you one day.
Am not a van lifer now..but listening to a hospice nurse list the most common regrets when people reach the end..were ..working all the time, not spending time with family and friends and not doing what they loved. Took my first, solo car camping trip this year at 72. 6000 miles and 45 days later with lots of uncertainties and learning experiences along the way, I am filled with excitement and fulfillment months later. I only have to look at photos I took to bring the feeling back. I can't express how unfortunate it is to let your fears of "suckiness" keep you from experiencing mind blowing scenery and just plain quiet time in nature. My biggest regret is that I didn't figure it out sooner..did that work, work, work thing. Thank you, Bob..you started me on this path years ago watching your videos.
Great message!! When people have a purpose in life, it really makes for a happy life. Its so easy to stay home, sit in front of the TV and slowly die, mentally. 'Purpose' is EVERYTHING!
I agree. Everything sucks if a person believes that, but living on the road can be amazing and the freedom is worth it. Everything in life needs to be practiced with gratitude and confidence. If a person has that base, all things can be conquered.

When I decided to do this, after reading Bob’s blog years ago, I was nervous, because I knew I would be uncomfortable. There would be heat and humidity, mosquitoes, and other bugs, and that had me worried. Until I realized that I was actually afraid of simply being uncomfortable! We have gotten so spoiled in this society that the thought of discomfort is actually frightening. When I realized what an overreaction that was, I decided I wanted this life enough to figure it out. I went to my first RTR, rented a car and borrowed a tent, to make sure I really wanted to do it. After four days of some considerable discomfort, I still wanted this. And that’s when I knew I was willing to put up with a little discomfort in order to have the freedom and pleasure of life on the road. I did it for eight years full-time, with many big and small problems, but never regretted it. I have settled down, but I miss it and I’m planning to get back on the road, at least part time, as soon as I can get another rig
I did truck camper living for two years by choice and really had enough. Being bothered by law enforcement was starting to be a pain in the butt and short showers to conserve water my two main gripes. It was definitely different and Im glad I tried it. I know now that I can surely live with a lot less.
Change is always painful but the results are well worth the trials and tribulations. A new life can be had and enjoyed for those willing to make the change. Thank you Bob for all of the information and knowledge you so lovingly share.❤
Yes Van life isn't always easy. Van life isn't always a choice. Van life comes with a stigma. Van life also give freedom from being stagnant. Some people are envious of Van lifers. ❤😊
Several months ago, me & my daughter decided to give vanlife a try. I started video documenting my journey from hermit in a stationary tin can to vanlifer in a mobile tin can. I have been stagnating for nearly ten years. Kinda of just waiting to die. When mini-me suggested vanlife, it scared me but then grew on me. We have always been a camping & adventuring family, so I decided to that I *would* leave my comfort zone, travel with my daughter & see my friends & my country before I’m truly infirm. I decided that, yes, I’m 70 yo, but I may as well give this a go, even if it’s my last hurrah! Lol. My daughter embarked on her journey last week! But alas! I am still ‘grounded’ due to circumstances. However, I expect to join her early in 2024! Once my home sells, the mobile part of my journey begins. Then I will release my journey journal for public viewing. Your video hit home, Bob. You are describing me, except I don’t know yet if ‘van life sucks!’ Lol. Thank you!
I needed to hear this today. I'm almost 65, and I'll be retiring in 2024. My man (a city boy who has never camped), and I are preparing to become full-time nomads---a dream I've had for over a decade. This past week, I've been worried about all the creature comforts I'll give up, like plenty of hot running water, and my washer & drier. I know I want a more adventurous life, but I also know it will be harder in many ways. It's daunting to imagine getting so far out of my comfort zone, and I'm scared. I have been living in Costa Rica for the last 20yrs worked hard bought and sold 3 houses all paid in full helped family with car's and motorcycles and much more having good times and bad times But I'm starting to collect a small SSI check monthly starting in Feb 2024 and I am going to get an old cheap Van and make it realiable to get around and me and my old pug are going to travel around living a Free Van Nomad Life seeing all the Nature Beauty Thanks for you Videos
Great message as always. The only point I would like to share is that I think people can still get out of their comfort zone without doing vanlife. This can be done through traveling, changing career, starting a new activity, etc. How we do it it’s personal and circunstancial. What Bob shares it’s one of many great ways that are available.
I agree, can life is one way not THE way. I read that couples who get out of their comfort zone together, like playing a new game or trying a zip line, bond stronger. Need both safety and novelty to thrive.
Well said! I did not watch/listen to much of the video as I get annoyed by a "blaming of societal norms" on a personal acceptance of those "norms" or whatever. I made several conscious lifestyle choices for myself 38 plus years ago.: 1 person self employed "shop" vs "corporate", small home (not tiny, but small), RV for work/travel. Overall, I chose relatively simple ... I also chose to remain primarily single and to not have children which I am aware allowed me the freedom to make some of the choices that I made. As you (@ydsamples) notes ... nomadic life/van life is one option of a simpler life style but not the only option. AND, all options whether simple or more complex have their own challenges as well as consequences. FWIW I am 68 and will fulfill my last self employment development contract in January 2024. And then on to ???? I have some ideas :)
You give a realistic picture. Your wonderful commenters have given me hints, tips & ideas. Anyone who thinks it’s going to be "fantastic" isn’t paying attention to people’s showering & toilet issues. The woods are my friend. Gas prices aren’t 😁. I LOVE my Subaru Crosstrek that I LIVE in. I LOVE my life. I’m old enough to not care what people think. I advise everyone to practice first. If you think it’s a possibility, live in your home but pretend it’s your vehicle. Measure your water. Pee in yogurt container. Shower however you expect to in vehicle.Turn off tv. Stay outside. I exclusively used my camp stove, Goal Zero & fridge for vehicle. Did this for 2 months. Slept in vehicle for a couple weeks in driveway. Watched what I wore. How much I spent. I’m not ever going to be a "sell it all" & hit the road person. I’m wary & cautious. If you think it’s cheap-it’s not. Gas is expensive. Finding water. Finding toilets to dump waste. Finding safe spots to park. BUT you WILL find yourself & be surprised at how strong you are. Thanks Bob & the Whole Community of Nomads!☮️ *I don’t miss gutter cleaning, mowing the lawn or fixing/updating appliances. I drive by Home Depot & wave these days*

I have a small studio apt. now, and I am slowly - almost unconsciouly, re-arranging my things in van, small rv size. i thought I might get an "easy chair" to read and relax in when I first moved in. I miss the full moon and stars in the desert, and I want it back. I'm working on it, thanks for the post.
Great advice to try living the way you would in a van, but at home first, especially regarding bathroom issues. I know that's going to be my biggest challenge in a minivan. I'm confident that I'll figure out what will work for me, though!

Five years on the road and wouldn't change a thing. Currently in van, but started in my SUV in Nov 2018. I remember that first winter, am temps were in the 20s, and as I'm warming hands with my cuppa joe, I'm thinking "I would still rather be here than working that job that was slowly killing me ". Thanks Bob for the inspiration and insight. Each year gets easier and simpler.
Wise, Bob... always so wise. I think many of the "van life sucks" videos are produced for two reasons. People bought a fantasy to escape realty and expected that they would make a video or two and have the Instagram life that they saw on RU-vid. Others utilized the title as click bate. Both sadden me. I'm a part-time van dweller since 2018, however I was great at conforming and consuming. I wasn't very happy as a child and I was determined to use whatever talents that I had to change my life (for me it was through education). I was successful in this endeavor and I worked harder and harder and then filled my physical and emotional exhaustion with stuff. I loved my career, and I felt that I did do something positive in the world. However, no one thing is enough. I can do almost everything thing in my van that I can do in sticks and bricks, I just need to do them differently. In return, there is a freedom and a simplicity. I'm not worrying about the lawn or the water heater, I'm living life. Is it an Instagram life? Nope, that is a fake life. When the pandemic hit van life became trendy. Trends come and go and trend seekers move on to the next "great thing." Your videos allow van dwellers to have pride in an alternate lifestyle that society shames. Thank you.

I am 53 now and been doing the nomad thing all my adult life. The only issues I sometimes have is getting water to bathe. I must say when I do have a hot shower, it’s a luxury for me. Unfortunately I chose to stay on the east coast my whole life so I experience the four seasons. I drive a semi also so that has been a blessing to get a paycheck and free place to live. With my freedom, I’ve been able to travel all over the world.. that is the most important thing in my life experiences not monetary items.
There's nothing wrong with having a home, working and saving to support one's self and family. There are so many ways to find adventure and explore other than full-time van life. I am now retired and living part-time in my van, but it's a Winnebago Class B and I have the finances to travel however I want and wherever I want. That Social Security so many seniors depend on is dependant on younger people working, so don't knock it.
I agree.... It doesn't have to be...All or Nothing.... I suggest people try traveling.... Maybe a Train across the Country & into Canada.... A Riverboat down the Mississippi River.... & See how much you Love Coming Home....
I think that a lot of the 'van life sucks' videos are a reaction to overly romanticised portrayals of van / tiny home life in recent times. A reality check rather than a condemnation of van life as a whole. Your channel presents a much, much more realistic picture of van life than a lot of others (which is why I love it).
in the 1989 movie "Parenthood" there is a scene where Mary Steenburgen and Steve Martin play parents watching a disaster of a children's play. the camera shot of them simulates a rollercoaster. one parent is laughing and thoroughly enjoying the ride. the other is frozen in Terror with each twist and turn and sudden drop of the rollercoaster!!!! life IS a rollercoaster: can you enjoy the ride? i think about the explorers leaving Tahiti. in their dugout canoes; leaving one of the most beautiful places on earth, just to see what ELSE is out there.
Great message Bob. What holds me back is health disabilities. Need a repeat knee replacement after 22 years. Need the other knee replaced and two hip replacements. I'm almost 74 have been a widow for 17 years. Took my parents in one at a time on Hospice, was a full time caregiver for my husband until his passing. My time may be running out. My son 45 works full time and his wife ....but they camp continuesly every chance they get and will until they retire. I admire them and all the sights they have witnessed. I love van life so far. Sure, there are many challenges and always decisions to make. Been on the road now for 5 months and I thank Bob for all the videos that inspired my decision to hit the road at 65. It is exactly like life, good days, bad days, really good days, and some really bad days. To me, a bad day out here beats a good day in the city where I used to live, any time. EDIT: Here is another quote from me: "If not now...when?"
Ironically, the more I watch other vanlifers/RVlifers videos, the more I know what path I want my life to take next. Watching all these videos, yours and so many others out there (both positive and negative) has only convinced me that RVlife is going to be the next leg of my life journey. I know nothing can prepare anyone 100% for all the challenges and pitfalls along the way, but isn't that true for any way of life? Isn't that true for any change? Life is funny that way, there are always going to be new challenges, new directions, and new solutions for everything. That's how humans evolved, by meeting those challenges and either learning to live with them or overcome them. I think at my age, I'm 57, I've learned that my "comfort zone" is wherever I choose to make it. I can be comfortable in an apartment (sort of), on a farm, in a house...I've been comfortable even in a shed! (Long story there on that last one, but it was actually FUN!) I've raised my son, he still has to figure out his "comfort zone" without Mom providing it for him, but that's his journey. I've done my job, I've given him the tools, he has to choose to use them. When my RVlife path starts, it will be on my own. Honestly, I can't wait!
It has taken me a couple of years to really work out a "system" for all my daily rituals but I'm really starting to feel at ease in this life. Good luck on your journey, I think you will love it.

I’m really hopeful I will feel incredible peace and the person who has been recoiling inside of me can come back out. I’ve never ever fit into “the American dream”. It never even sounded like a good idea to me. I’m very happy to give up the few traditional comforts I currently take advantage of. I’m hopeful to maybe get a little plot of land to homestead on someday. Land I own instead of the bank. However, I believe a mobile life will be ideal as the earth is dying

Bob, I'm turning 60 in February, I've had a triple bypass and now I'm in congestive heart failure. I've wanted to see our beautiful country so bad, seeing you with the beautiful backdrop made me almost cry. I'm working hard on my health and I'm promising myself that soon I'm at least going to take my 2008 van that we've built and travel, even if it's only in my own state of Ohio. Bob, your channel and channels like yours is softening the learning curve for all of us. Today's video can be applied to anything you want to grow at not just van life. Reading or "hearing" between the lines, apply words of wisdom to what it is YOU want to do, not what others want you to do.
You know, I never felt Bob made it look easy. It's obvious he believes in this lifestyle, he keeps his interviews upbeat and positive, but what I've gotten for these CRVL videos is pragmatism: This is how you deal with poop. This is a way to set up your rig. This is how you get mail. I live out of a minivan and, yeah, it sucks on occasion...but vehicle life is an amazing experience, empowering in ways I couldn't have imagined. Yeah, some people drop out and allow themselves bitterness ("It sucks! This is why I left!"). Some of us take a break from time to time, return to the stick and brick for awhile, but always return to a life on the road and happily. It isn't always easy, but it is a deeply enriching experience...
WOOHOOO BOB! I just got back from a 1-day road trip (in the car) with my dog, I wanted to get away for the day after I'd prayed to God for a sign about selling my house (my comfort zone) & living and traveling in my van! I just got back home & got on YT, there you were! Hallelujah! I'm a retired ER nurse. During the last 2 years I've lost my mom, dad & sister-in-law to " you know what" and have been sitting in my comfort zone dying ever since. I have a 1999 B190 Airstream van I've paid off, she's sitting there patiently waiting for me. My old rebel-rouser self has been stifled down to a barely heard hum. Deep down I knew one day, one fine day, I was gonna walk out there, get in and GO! I've been buying things all along, and I have all I need to just go, just needed a shove! Thanks for the shove! As a lot of these " Van lifers" quickly find out,the road can+ will chew you up + spit you out,i n a trail of broken parts + shattered dreams. Ease into it....Se if you have what it takes.

I LOVE my comfort zone, but hey, I JUST bought a Toyota Sienna minivan that I will outfit into a camper. I plan to get out of my comfort zone for at least a month at a time. Let the adventures begin!

I want something like that in my life. This video made me feel like you were speaking to me. I am disabled. One of conditions is agoraphobia. My anxiety disorder makes me a nervous driver. I struggle anytime things don’t go as planned. So many reasons that nomad life would be so difficult at first. But…that agoraphobia is the ever shrinking comfort zone where my life gets smaller and smaller. I definitely feel like I am sitting here waiting to die. Things will only get worse if I don’t make changes. Where if I leave here maybe it will be worse at first , but it could turn into something really great. Thank you for your motivational words. Hope is something that can be hard to come by
Happiness is a state of mind. If you don't have your mind in order then you will not be happy anywhere. So many people try to change their external world to fix their internal world only to find that their internal problems remain. Do the inner work and you will be happy anywhere.
I’m loving van life after the first 6 months at age 70. My only issues are lack of funds means I can’t explore (drive) as much as I want, and any repairs are very stressful (and with an 18 yo minivan, I need several expensive repairs); and I wish I had a bit more space.
You have to know yourself and what gives you peace and fulfillment. Some people are more at peace in nomadic life. It’s their comfort zone. Because for whatever reason the sticks and brick world is more difficult for them. My meaning and purpose more relates to trying to give back to others for the blessings I have received. Supporting my family and friends and working through my church. It makes me sing. I am very much a part of life. I respect that everyone has a path. Every path has equal value. I enjoy watching videos of those that follow a nomadic life. It expands my horizon to see how others choose to live. I respect their decisions. I am also very grateful to those who keep the basic chores of this world running.
I don’t think stick n bricks are difficult for them as you say, so much as they see the freedom of living out of their van, rv, car whatever mode they chose because they are living outside. They spend more time out of it then in it. Where when you have a house you go in and are in there safe and sound until you get up and repeat the next day. Being out of your dwelling more than inside allows one to be in tune with nature, spirituality at a whole different level. You meet so many people and hearts connect deeply. Keep in mind we are talking about those that made an intentional decision to live this way, not those that found themselves homeless. Two totally different living situations.
That’s not exactly what I meant. I don’t think choosing to live as a nomad is any more spiritually freeing than living in a house. It’s not a higher goal. You choose a path of life fulfillment. Everyone’s is different. Some people have chosen a life of service to others. Some people are happy sitting on the porch watching the kids play. And I do think that nomadic life is some people’s comfort zone. I like Bob. I’ve watched him well before the pandemic. But it sounded judgmental to me. Being on the road doesn’t make you sing. Being you makes you sing. I raised four children and have eight grandchildren. To not be a part of their daily lives- to not be connected deeply to them- my song would die. Do we now have to conform to being nomads?
So glad you did this video because it was needed. Always consider the source... everyone views our world differently based on their experiences and their eyes. Van life might not be for some because they don't have the adventure gene. But I hope if some viewers are about to change their lives but fear is stopping them, this video is exactly what they needed to hear. Thank you for this!
Thank you for this. It really resonates with me. I'm in the UK, I'm disabled and in the process of trying to get things sorted so I can spend more time in my campervan. You've said exactly what I'm feeling - how important it is to get out there and DO things, have experiences, make memories, even if the prospect is daunting. The quote by Anaïs Nin hit me because recently I wrote a revelation that occurred to me: “So much of our misery is borne out of remaining too long at a waypoint.” Hers gives a lot of perspective and makes realize everything is a waypoint if you let it be, meaning there’s so much more beyond it that can only be reached by pushing forward. Bob, I want to thank you for the learnings and also for setting the example of highlighting female thinkers. It’s so rare that a man doesn’t solely reference other men. I think many people who watch your videos probably can’t recognize the deep authenticity with which you live your life, but some of us do see you. And I applaud you for it. 👏🏼 Living in a stationary white box does feel like death. For the year and a half I car camped a while back, life felt very easy actually. I think I was in a near constant state of awe. I just reembarked and this time in a teardrop, and it’s been much harder since I didn’t have to manage plumbing and the other responsibilities of a camper before. However, it’s all been worth it. It’s the most free you’ll ever be.
I do my van living virtually, all over the world. Meanwhile, I have a very comfortable life in a nice bricks and sticks Texas home. Therefore, I have the best of all worlds. - I discovered van life 20 years ago. I tried it for a year, and have watched them on YT since 2012. I've seen thousands and van lifer's come and go on RU-vid. Very few of them make it more than a few months or a few years. - Van life is like getting into the Army. It's a whole different mindset and world. (I did the US Army for 6 years). It's easy if you go with the flow, obey the culture rules, and let the weather be your friend. It also helps to have plenty of money. Van life also can remind me of the Greek who to had to push a boulder up a mountain. The next day, he had to do it all over again. The beauty of my present life is stability, predictability, and total safety. Already today, I have been to Turkey, the UK, North Carolina and Arizona. How interesting. Nice. Fully agree. I experienced this 1st hand in my 50's: making 6 zeros but compulsively spending it to keep myself distracted from the misery of my comfort zone. Started watching u and others and designed the decade of my 60's predicated on adventure and new experiences. At 61 I have my Van, a new career, and a yr left of debt reduction. I'm attending WRTR for the 1st time after 4 yrs of wishing, and I'm so excited about my life!
I just started van life back in October. Yeah, there are things that suck, but there are things that suck about living in a home. I was living with my parents and I didn't get along with my dad. It was a toxic relationship for the most part. The worst things I've experience in living in a van so far are still better than living with my dad. Plus, slowly, Im figuring things out and I'm making progress to fixing some of the things that suck. For example, besides using public toilets (which is fine for me) I don't like using my toilet when I'm not near a public one. It's difficult to do in my van since it's a minivan and there's not much space (Im a pretty big guy) and it's cold outside at night right now and people nearby my area. So, I'm going to be soon buying one of those privacy tents that are like a portable outhouse. It'll also give me a place to shower. My van is also cluttered, so I'm going to set up my tent and reorganize and try to sell what I haven't been using. In general, I have been liking living in a van. It's got it's issues, but Im making it work so far. Other issues will probably come up, but I'll deal with them when they come. Living in a van has let me get out of the boring and frustrating cycle I was in living in a house.
I recently passed my one-year/10,000 miles, 17 states mark. It def doesn't suck. I love it. I've had some very miserable days and nights, yes. I don't have a build, heater, A/C, nor most of the other accoutrements of vanlife. I have my reasons, which I won't bore you with here. I manage quite well without all those things. I've been wanting to do this for a very long time, but the timing had to be right. So here I am, out in the wilds of America, seeing and experiencing things I otherwise would not ever have been able to. Finding a job with ease on the road has been my #1 challenge and stressor. I did not start out with a bunch of money, and am living on a shoestring. I need work but few places offer temporary housing, which is a must for me. Otherwise, I'm in heaven out here on the road. Hi Bob, some questions if you can help please, if you have time 😊. 1. Can you show us an easy inexpensive way to connect fridge/maxi fan to Solar in a van. It would cost a lot to get an auto electrician to install wiring, can you just run wire from solar panel through window to your power station ? I wonder how safe or dangerous that would be 🤔 It would be awesome to be able to have power connected to car battery as a back up (with cut off so doesn't drain all your car battery) but that would cost a lot to have done. I'll just gave to make do with charging a power station from Solar ( plug in 12v cigarette lighter to charge from car battery when driving). 2. What kind of business would you go to, to get Solar panels attached to your roof ? One lady has just taped flat Solar panels to her roof but I'm guessing that's a bit risky. 3. You spend a lot of time in Quartzsite , that's desert area right ? Is your Van 4WD, do you need 4WD for a lot off desert, Forest and mountain areas? Beautiful, well said, every person who dares to live true to themselves, understands exactly what you said and read, this doesn’t just apply to van life, the Nomadic way of life, I’m a homesteader, I live rural and I love it! I have friends I made from school who live in the city and they asked me how can I stand to live as they say “ in the middle of Nowhere?!” But I wouldn’t trade my Nowhere with its New challenges everyday for their office jobs, I would take my thrift store shopping- looking through the junk stores for a undiscovered treasure, over there big fancy malls any day, it’s not easy homesteading we have bears that try’s to get to the honey bees, bobcats, coyotes, that’s always after my hens and bunnies, and in the beginning they seemed to win more than I did but Not now, I didn’t give up I learned from my mistakes I love my mountain hikes and beautiful sunsets and I enjoy not being with crowds of people, it’s challenging but I’m always learning, it feels like I’m really living, and there’s pure joy in that for me, it’s peaceful here and my soul is happy. 😊❤
I love this video! It depends on the circumstances, I think, on how or why you began living van life. If you had to do it out of hardship I would guess it takes a bit of time to reconcile your feelings about it. If you are excited to do it out of a spirit of adventure then your able to jump over the hurdles until you become comfortable with it. Yes, you are absolutely right about finding your purpose.

It's a blessing for me to know that I'm far from being alone. I've much thanks to you all for sharing your "escape" stories. This July is my 63rd, and this September will the beginning of my liberation. Recently, I purchased a 2014 29" Prowler travel trailer with two slides (plenty of room and amenities). Headed to the south west, where I will continue providing chiropractic physician services while staying and "living" whenever and wherever I wish and wherever I'm needed. My four children will fly out so that we're together for a week of adventure and peace. A huge thank you and love to Bob and you all. Peace.

It is true that if you don't take the risk to follow your dreams, you are not living, but only existing!!!! I'm also subscribed to Tory Delury who is a beautiful young lady who lives in her van!!! She's an inspiration and so are you Bob and all the Nomads in your videos!!! I've lived the RV life style for most of my life and miss it so much!!! Even though Im not now the love of the RV life style will always be there!!! That's why I think it's time to start RVing again!!!!
I imagine van life can really suck if one doesn’t have the resources to live comfortably in their vehicle; to have the money to take care of keeping the vehicle running safely.
