Does video gaming ruin people's lives? | Antonius van Rooij | TEDxGhent

League of Legends, World of Warcraft and Counter Strike are only three video games among hundreds but they all have one thing in common: once you get hooked it is hard to stop playing. But when does gaming behaviour become a serious problem? Does gaming „eat“ the soul of our children? In his talk Antonius van Rooij will explain the science behind video game addiction.
Antonius van Rooij successfully defended his PhD on the same topic in 2011 and is currently employed as a senior researcher at the iMinds research group Media & ICT (MICT) at Ghent University. He is active in several Dutch and Flemish public health initiatives that aim to translate scientific information about the risks and benefits of gaming to the general public through websites, online self-tests, and streamed video.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

How I stopped gaming: 1) I made the decision- making the decision is the first step of every process 2) I looged off my social/gaming media (aka discord, skype, etc...)- The thing that always stopped me from quiting gaming was my friends asking my to play with them... however, from my experience I can tell you that real friend will remain your friends even when you're not playing, you'll recognize whos a real one and who isn't as you quit (talking about real life friends that know where they can reach you) 3) I found new hobbies- This one is SO important. When gaming is a big part of your life, you can't just quit gaming and leave the space that gaming was filling in your life empty. For me it was joining a youth group and learning to play the guitar, for you it can be whatever you've always wanted to do (if you can't think of other hobbies search it up on google, google knows everything) 4) I met new people- Talk to people, make new friends, go out. When I stopped gaming I wasn't in contact anymore with most of my gamer friends. You'll be surprised how many AWESOME people there are out there you can be friends with even if you're not sharing the same hobbies These steps worked for me, It was a long jorney and most of the time I felt the urge to play, but as time went by this urge has gone and I feel like I'm way more productive and happy (I still feel like playing every now and then but whenver it happens I start doing something else) I can finally say: I'M GAMING FREEE!!!

We homeschool/unschool our kids, my oldest daughter plays video games for her school work she has her own yt channel and loves everything video games. She also reads, draws, helps with her younger siblings and plays outside everyday even though I dont force her to get off. When you have restrictions on things like TV or videogames kids cling to it because they get limited time with it and they want to play as much as possible because they only get some much time with it. My 11 yr old is proof that when you have no limits on screens, they arent so fanatical about it.

I would say I had an addiction. I am not entirely sure if it was, I always looked at it as an escape from my current reality to be poor in a former soviet republic. I did not have any particular issues but I regret investing so much time being involved with this industry. Time I could have spent learning a language for an example or simply going out walking outside. If you are not making money from gaming it is a waste of time if you are 18 or older. Now, I work in a different country and my reality is different so I no longer need the desire to play.
@flyorfloat
@flyorfloat 2 года назад
Honestly, it's a waste of time for people below 18... I remember I used to play video games non stop until I was 13 and decided to pick up easy programming. Now I only spend like 30 minutes - 1 hour on video games everyday. I used to doubt "Video games cause violence" but now that sentiment might prove to be true. Video games alone might not cause violence itself, but it can make an already violent person a lot more violent, and there has been some studies theorizing it causes ADHD, depression, etc. Of course it's not 100% a fact yet, but I can see in the near future it being one.

Most of the conversations about addiction and the negative sides of video games are always about World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and similar games. It’s very annoying that people don’t do talks about great games outside of these games that cause people to curl up in a dark room for 10+ hours and take their life away. There are endless more games to talk about that aren’t these nerdy PC games.
@dewitubeX1
@dewitubeX1 5 лет назад
bottom line, is all games in general. it doesn't matter if is pacman or megaman or whatever game if is online or not is just hat if you are stuck playing for hours then you know is a problem and dealing with them. i used to play quake live for 4 hours a day before and some times i used to finish and them jump from an online game to another that was offline. it was very bad for a while i noticed i was tired during the day and wasn't peforming at my best with things. so i cut down those hours to 1 or 2 a day. it took a few days to get used to but it works. another thing is you should consider gaming as watching tv and being on the phone watching videos as the same thing because is all screen time. is good to minimized the total to at least 2 to 3 hours a day.

Well, i hope you've gotten yourself up out of your slump already, but just in case you haven't, here are a couple of ways you can help both control yourself and apply more focused effort towards getting a new job or just turning a fresh page in life all together; Set yourself a threshold task for tomorrow, something you want to get something done about, and try your best to already be putting your mind towards it as you wake up and have breakfast, don't allow yourself to start playing before you've at the very least done what you set out to do, but to make it something you can reinforce positively as quickly as possible without failing and 'falling in', make it relatively easy to achieve, something like just touching up your resumé and application letters, doing some searching and reading on how you can improve those, or putting in a timed hour of research into lines of study you might want to go to school for. Do this style for a week or so, get comfortable with putting off the start of your gaming-days and inserting more practical things as well, like some cleaning, a morning walk outside, simple workouts, things you can get done in an hour or two. This helps you establish more comfort with taking concerted and mindful control over your time, and as soon as you're comfortable enough you should start gaming on a timer - when you've done your morning business and you're set to play something, all happy that you at least got something done today before starting, just set a timer for one hour and decide before you start playing what you want to spend your break on; again try to stick with stuff that will help you get on with your life, or just gets you moving around away from your battlestation of choice, set your break activity to something you can do in 15-30 minutes, and as you return to playing more set yourself a new timer and a new activity for your next break, and try to keep varying what you aim to do. The more times you manage to succeed in replacing time you would have otherwise come to consider as 'wasted' or 'lost' on gaming 'too much' with time spent doing things you consider as paving your way to success, the better you'll get at it, and don't ever let anybody online or offline tell you that you can't have your breaks, you decide to create them, they exist solely for your benefit, and everyone else playing games be they friend or foe has to either learn to control just their own lives or just live with the frustration of being rejected from controlling yours! Again, i hope you got goin' with something on your own already since your comment is 4 months old by now, but if you didn't, I really hope you'll take the 15 minutes it takes to read and at least consider heeding my advice, and GL to ya' regardless of your choices :)

i think a lot of smart people get lost in games because its kind of a continuous puzzle and constant brain stimulation which not so many activities in the real world can offer. and for me gaming allows me to do things which are impossible in the real world or highly expensive/dangerous. i.e swordfighting, shooting, street racing, fantasy adventure, theres so much. these are things i want to experience and only games allow me that, the real world is a disappointment sometimes.

i love good games and i love taking the time to play a game that is really well made once in a while, but i have honestly seen quite a few people losing way too much while they spent their life playing games non stop. it was not the games fault or the gamers fault, it was often a combination, of sickness, our often very cruel society, untreated traumas or the constant pressure and early on isolation by the groups of the children that could have become their lifelong friends if they would have given them a chance. if real life does not treat you well, or does not even give you any fair chance early on, then you are trying to protect yourself by turning to a world that wants needs and rewards you. tackle those roots as well as the games that specialize in targeting and brainwashing the ones that become social outcasts by the hands of the majority.

I agree with ur argument concerning with "sickness," "untreated traumas," etc. Many ppl play games bc they think it's a solution to their problems in real life They are doing the exact opposite, running away from their problems That's why they game more because they get stuck at the same spot and not grow This also can apply when you are on your phone too much, watch too much tv, play on computer, etc. That's technology for ya Instead of a tool, it's ur toy

One of the major problems people run into when playing for extended amount of time is the reward. Video games provide short term reward, whereas accomplishing a goal in the real world takes a very long time depending on the goal you set up. People whom fall to addiction don't think about their future, they want to have something right here and now, they don't have patience and willpower to pursue their goals for decades, if it takes them that much.

Yes, yes it does. My life ended on December 25th 1999, the date I unwrapped my green game boy colour with Pokémon Blue. That was the worst present I have ever received and would spark a lifelong gaming addiction. The speaker in this talk touched on a very key point in his presentation, in that parents taking games away until the weekend or until school work is finished doesn’t benefit the kid in the slightest; this tactic actually has an adverse effect and makes the kid crave games more!!!! This “tactic” was employed on me as a kid and by middle school my brain was absolutely fried. I wish more than anything that I never had a single gaming console in my adolescence...had that have happened my dream of becoming a professional football player might have came into fruition but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.

Using exception as an example shows what is the rule… most kids playing videogames all day are not being called to go to Korea. Most kids are using videogames as refuge from reality, so they dont have to deal with teenage life, which is a hard time in our lives. But we need to go through as we learn a lot in this period. They will have to go through life without social skills, wont have motivation to learn a instrument, read a book or learn a language. Meanwhile other kids might be out there riding bicycles, playing footy, building tree houses… as everything in life it need moderation. I would say they should allow video game as much time they do other things. Too much of anything is not a good sign.

24 -8 hours sleep = 16 - 6 hours for game = 10 - 4 hours for other things like traveling, waiting, eating, day dreaming etc, you are left with 6 hours for schooling. 6 hours is not enough for studying and doing home work even for middle school student. You do not have time to wake up and go to school let alone getting A’s. So you are lying. Period.
@charley6799
@charley6799 6 лет назад
to the above guy, 24-6 hours for sleep because I can't get more than that without using drugs no matter what I do=18-6 hours for gaming=12-8 hours for travel, waiting, day dreaming, exploring=4 hours for school because at least in the US the standards for education can easily be met in this time in middle school, or high school if you find that sort of thing easy, this worked for me for years in late ms/most of hs.

7:55 and even if you become a professional gamer (which takes more factors than just gift),that success is short-lived, You are forced to retire at an earlier age or the game just dies and suddenly you are facing a crisis. Some pro gamers made it somehow after retirement with streaming, smart investment or had a job related to esports/video games..but this is not usually the case .

My Opinions: It depends. If you can control your gaming habits or set a time table. You should be good. Some can just do well in life despite gaming a lot. I dunno how they do it though. Most of the time, it’s the persons own fault for discovering the game they later become addicted to. I’m not afraid to admit it. For me. Learning when to quit in general has enabled me to control my gaming habits

not the games are the ones that ruin people's lives, but people themselves. It is your choice if you play a game for 1 or 2 hours, or if you do it for 8+ h a day. People like to blame others for their problems, but you are the one who is choosing in the end. It is just like the knife métaphore where you can use a knife to prepare a good meal or to murder someone. Is about your choice and how you use that tool, not about the tool.

I think they are partly responsible for ruining a real life. I like to play video games because as in most games they are relatively easy to pick up, the learning curve is intense and within 30 hours you can be very good at something you initially sucked at in the beginning. Life, is not like that. Many skills in life require many months at the very least to master and some skills can take years. Case in point, if I wish to become a helicopter pilot I need to train for years and spend a lot of money. Whereas if i invest 100 hours into a helicopter simulator game, I’m now pretty good. For me, video games offer an instant reward and I can feel validated. Life, offers slow rewards and seeking validation requires far too much time and effort. It’s the reason I fail in life more. Video games have moulded gamers to seek immediate reward which unfortunately does not transfer to real life. Not to mention as well that video games often offer a unique view into our deepest imaginations. Where as life, real life, is boring in comparison. That said I’m still going to play video games even if I believe them to have a negative skew on my real life.

Bias and trivial! If a kid plays for 4+ hours daily and you do not see a problem with that at all, then you might have a problem yourself. How do you expect the video game industry to act ‘responsibly’ by designing their video games to be less addictive when their only goal is to profit. And what is best way to profit from video games other than designing them to be addictive?!
